I wonder how long it will take by car..

assuming you didn't have to stop for gas, food, sleep, bathroom breaks, you caught no lights, there was no traffic and obeyed a 65 mph...about 210,748,156 years. Assuming I did my math right.

Those things that E.T. was...so I can release something horribly carnivorious on them, boil their oceans and destroy thier planet. That little spud gives me the creeps.

I'm thinking even if you could completely erase the entire galaxy and start populating it with just your own creations it would get pretty dull. No matter how creative a person is, they're going to tend to follow a certain style in creating things. For example, perfering hexapods, liking a certain manidble, maybe the color. It would be much like how the art work from an artist can be spotted by they're style, all the wildlife will probably end up having a familiar look. It would be, well, basically like life that all developed in one world, everything looks subtlely related.

Now that's all well and good if that's what you want to do, it would be potentially interesting. It be kind of an ego trip I guess knowing that the whole universe was solely existant by your hand. However, I think there's a couple of other problems over looked.

As far as I've been able to tell, nothing evolves on it's own. A creature made stays that way unless the player changes it. If that's the case, the whole universe becomes kind of stagnant. At least with the download system, each world, each civilization, right down to each plant becomes something new to explore.

The second one was from what I understand the galaxy in Spore was going to be HUGE...tens of thousands of stars huge, if not in the million range. That's a whooooolleeee lot of work to populate by hand. Unless we're talking where are your own creations were automatically seeded across the galaxy. Then it goes back to even with 200 civilizations, the universe is awefully uniform.

I was thinking of going with a smaller take on this idea, I was just going to grab a small cluster of the galaxy and make that the little utopian fully scuplted and personally created section of the universe and leave everything 'wild'

Either way, going to be fun.
