I told a friend about it a while back... she's a bit of a PC gamer herself, but doesn't really keep up to date with the latest games news so didn't know about Spore. After a short introduction she was very enthusiastic, naturally! Even my mum thinks it's cool (wait, is that a bad thing? :P). I may have to upgrade her computer and get her a copy just to stop her playing mine...

Still, I don't know what Chris Hecker was thinking. ;D They have to *work* with these people whose console he's just garroted in public. It doesn't matter whether Will likes the Wii or not, if a team member of his is seen to be anti-Wii, then people will automatically assume the whole team is. Especially with how rabid some of that Wii fanbase can get...

I doubt there'll be any serious repercussions from this, just a few Wii fans saying they'll boycot Spore... then secretly buying it for the PC. ;)

The Spore website situation has been stagnant in general. EA have been wanting to recruit a web designer for the site for a while now... methinks once that happens and the new website/official forums are up, *then* there will be a newsletter. So don't expect anything for a while yet. The listing of qualifications and experience required are so ridiculous it could take until 2010 to find someone. ;D

I have seen clunky animations pre-release in games before that were fixed by release. Of course we've never been dealing with procedural animation before. It could go either way, I suppose. In the end there's no point speculating or predicting. It will be what it will be. Just because someone predicts it will be one way or another doesn't make it so...

As has been said... this is one guy, on one blog, in the backwaters of the internet. New information from such a source is not even remotely reliable until it is backed up by multiple more reliable sources.

So calm down. Take a deep breath. Move the rant-posting fingers away from the keyboard. ;) EA would force a bug-riddled disaster release of Spore before delaying it until some ridiculous date such as Q4 2008.

I've had a Spore fansite for a while now... I didn't know this thread ever existed. ^^ I don't think I'll bother whipping up a banner and everything as it doesn't look like Skeletor updates his post anymore. It's called Spore Source anyway, and I'm doing my best to stuff it with all the screenshots, videos (that aren't on YouTube at least) and information from across the internet that I can. As ever, if anyone wants to affiliate, I'd be more than happy to...

Looks like you've got a pretty nice site there too MrCan. Keep it up. :)

Then the game will use pre-made content from the disk. It is said the disk comes with a lot of premade stuff from the devs so you can play the game fine offline if you want to. So I should think everything will be supplemented by dev creations until players start adding stuff.

Auto-generating names wouldn't be a huge problem... at least not for those guys. :P Just have a bunch of prefixes, suffixes, and maybe one or two syllables for the middle of the word, and switch randomly between them for different combinations. I would imagine this would be one way they could do it. Though hopefully they will give you the option to rename things as you see fit.

I don't think there's anything until March, that I know of (and that's GDC 07, where one of the Spore devs is doing a keynote). There isn't going to be an E3 2007... well, there is, but it's being drastically downsized and being kept in closed room sessions... so we may not get access to any info from that for a while, I don't know if the press is still allowed in, might just be for developers. There'll probably be some tidbits of info between all that anyway.

Of course the Space Phase and Spore in general will get boring eventually. Every game does, even the best ones. The test is whether it can keep you coming back for more after breaks from it, which I think it will (as someone else said).

As for your ideas uj, 1) is far too out there from a game mechanics perspective I would think... too difficult to implement. Or rather, too time consuming... you want this second half 2007, right? ;) 2) may be possible, but something tells me they wouldn't go to such an unnecessary level of detail with the vehicles. It's always possible I suppose. They did say the City phase will be like an RTS, so methinks it will be mainly point and click.
