Edit: Hmm, good point  :-[

Holy Crap, it's a Launch Arco!

But yea, that pic definitely makes me think of an oversized launch arco.

I agree, it would be weird and improbable for a creature to evolve and not have any way of manipulating it's environment.  I was just pondering the "what if?" of the situation.

Cool idea.  You could use the Volcano tool shown in the GDC '05 video to increase the atmospheric pressure to kill the inhabitants.  My reasoning for this is because WW said you use them to add atmosphere to the planet to make it habitable, so maybe if you put more volcanos down on an already habitable planet then it would start to have an adverse effect.  Maybe?  :-\  But I guess that would take a long time.

WAIT!  I know:  Your spaceship could have a huge vacuum tool on it!  Just like in Spaceballs!   ;D Oh that would be so funny.  You steal a planet's atmosphere and deposit it on another one so you can colonize it.

Edit: Dang, Legodragon beat me to it

Good thread!  Lots of good questions and ideas presented.

Alien diversity:  I think Spore will help people realize that alien life can be extremely varied physically and culturally.  While I do love Star Trek, almost all of the aliens are humanoid and have cultures that are very similar to humans (Klingons: warlike, Dominion: imperialistic, Vulcans: logical and peaceful).  Although, this can be explained and excused because 1) they don't have the budget to show exotic and crazy aliens and 2) Roddenberry originally used alien cultures to make commentary on the contemporary issues of our world.  However, due to the size of our galaxy and universe, I think any guesses on what an alien race might look or act like are valid.

I think we're really lucky as a species to have our hands and fingers.  What if an intelligent species evolved, but had no means of creating tools to manipulate their environment?  It's possible that there are many such species out there who have been forced to live the simple life because they can't make tools.

I did a quick look on wikipedia (yes, I know it shouldn't always be trusted), and our gas giants are all comprised of mostly hydrogen and helium.  These could fuel the energy needs your colonies, or maybe your starship (unless it has some other power source).

From wikipedia: "Helium-3 is a light, non-radioactive isotope of helium...Helium-3 is rare on Earth and sought-after for use in nuclear fusion. More abundant helium-3 is thought to exist on the Moon (embedded in the upper layer of regolith by the solar wind over billions of years) and the solar system's gas giants (left over from the original solar nebula)."

Also, with an abundance of helium, your specie's party balloon industry would boom, and everyone could be speaking with high pitched voices  :D

Oh I would pay so much extra.  I'm going to have to wait so long because I have a Mac  :(
Maybe I'll just have someone bash me in the head and induce amnesia so I can forget about the game until it becomes available...
