I don't play a lot of MMORPGs, but do they have problems with pirated accounts? I'm sure I can find a copy of the boxed game on a torrent, but I can't play the game without an account, right? And you have to pay to play. So unless you use a stolen credit card or hack someone else's account, that pirated game is useless.

Private servers.

CC was the only part of Spore worth paying for.

@Protavis:"Pokemon has more strategy and gameplay than Spore.".

Explain.  Pokemon uses stats more then Spore does.

Stats and strategy aren't the same thing, I'm sorry you believe they are.

It's near impossible to lose in Spore. All the best parts, thus max stats, are accessible to all creations, the same can't be said for Pokemon were what is accessible to each pokemon varies.  If it came down to PVP the spore creature that wins is the one with the better parts or the player who mashes the keys faster, with Pokemon between two good players its more than just bashing the keys as fast as possible.

See, if you go back and watch the old videos, the Spore we got was exactly the Spore that Will advertised from the beginning.

Underwater stage where? Form determining abilities rather than part stats where? Procedural actions where? Creatures behaving like they were played in anothers game where?

Water stage was not really important anyway.  Besides, other then that first one you never saw water stage again.  Procedural actions?  Are you kidding?  Of course they are procedural.  If form determined ability then everyone would just make huge creatures.

Importance comes down to the individual, secondly brushing it aside does not make your original claim true. Procedural actions as in bite + walk = drag. Only if everyone was playing in the same style, quite a few people were plotting out tiny swarming canivores. Gameplay took a huge hit as soon as stats were added to the parts, as it stands people just stick the best parts on their creatures which is worse. Pokemon has more strategy and gameplay than Spore.

Either way, the spore we got isn't the spore advertised from the very beginning like your claim, but then I guess you can see the emporers no clothes.

Your intentions mean nothing. You saying * i would never of bought it anyway* Simply translates to i would of never bought it anyway because i DID NOT WANT TO PAY FOR IT so i pirated it. Its not you would never, Its you don't want to.

One part of that argument you've glossed over is it often only applies to poor quality games or games that aren't catered to the target audience.  Truely great products are more often met with actual purchases. If anything it's more a statement on the medicority of products and the general unwillingness of the population to see the emperors new clothes.

Cant we just start vilifying Will for developing this piece of crap that deviates so very much from the original concept he painted? It's like he intentionally made the worst possible game out of the concept and I don't believe anyone with over a quarter of a brain could do that accidentally.

I want my time and money back now please.

Spore: General / Re: One of the reasons why Spore is "cute" and dumbed down
« on: November 03, 2008, 04:34:02 pm »
Seems like we're just screaming a lot about "I liked that idea in 2005 but I can't really tell you what I want specifically... but NOT what came out in 2007."

1. Statless parts, the functions of the creature came down to the design of the creature.

2. Underwater creatures and civilisations

3. A less immature aethestic and interface

etc

I have to question "underlying gameplay" in Lucy's quote also, there isn't any, seems a whole lot of time was wasted on very superficial aspects of the "game".

It has long been assumed that brown bears (NOT grizzlies) and polar bears had a close evolutionary relationship.

Well they can interbreed which is generally an indication that they aren't that distant, I mean we can't breed with chimpanzee's (Stalin tried it in the 1920's, he wanted to create an army of human/apes) even though we're genetically similiar *shrug*

Do you really want to play a game where you have no control over your creature evolution, or where the speed of light is really respected?

It'd be far more interesting, space would seem much much larger, emphasizing the powers of ten.

Quality =  Popularity

White potentially true, it isn't true in the reverse. Popularity =\= Quality

Sales = Quality

Ermm generally it means a really huge advertising push. I mean look at MP3 players, iPods rule yet they aren't nearly the best quality MP3 players out there, they just have the most advertising and a brand name behind them.

« on: October 27, 2008, 08:49:40 pm »
Spore was meant to be more scientific but they ran that into the ground and figured to hell with it, we'll make it cartoony.

It was more the influence of someone they hired who then ended up converting most of the developers and generally undermining Will who was after a more science based product *shrug*

2. Don't have the money? Don't buy it, or steal it and risk going to jail if you don't pay the fine, criminal scum.

Has anyone gone to jail for downloading something (that wasn't pedophilia related).
