Actually, it's the "Battlefield" part of that quote that has me interested. >.>  There is a part of me that might be into leading an army of my kats against the alien hordes.  DECIDEDLY un-Maxis, but it would be interesting. ^.^;

Since we're all bitching about changes from demo to real thing here, I'd also like to mention the interface.  The radial-menu, pop-up style interface in space I remember seeing in one of the demos was very neat.  It had a sort of 'projected hologram' quality to it that fit and was just more pleasing to look at.  It'd probably be a subtle asthetic to restore a more 'open' feel to Space that wouldn't hurt it at all.  Also, I actually liked the early version main menu.  A little 'green' for some people perhaps, but it was nice.  The galaxy screen is neat as well, though.  Since 'themes' are all the rage these days, perhaps 'themes' for the interfaces of Spore might be a worthwhile addon down the line? 

Returning to my original point, the interfaces in general can be rather obnoxious.  Not always, mind you, and I don't have a solution to how to make them better.  I just seem to remember the ones in the demo versions being a bit more free-form, something this game espoused at one point.  Perhaps it was just me projecting onto the previews, which is another theme of this thread.

... Seriously, what he said. ^^: Most remotes and even on the unit itself, there should be an 'input' button.  You also have to start the computer it already plugged into the TV, otherwise the compy might just not see the display if you try to plug it in after it's powered up.

Sadly, the game is not so advanced. ^^;  Again, it is using early-90's tech at best, and it seemed to be focused more on the 'mogul' side of things.  It did have a few interesting aspects to it; for example, I remember you could pick between hydrogen and helium for your craft.  Hydrogen was far less expensive, but then you ran the risk of every journey ending like the Hindenburg.  No virtual airship rides, however. 

... also, I can't help but think of the whole 'Golden Age of Ballooning' skits from Monty Python with this discussion.  "It's not a balloon!!! It's an AIRSHIP!!"

There's an old abandonware game floating about called 'Zeppelin' or something to that effect where you did manage an airship company.  It was mid-90's at best, probably earlier than that, but it made an impressive attempt.  It could easily be redone, but I don't know how much tolerance people would have for watching blimps airships go back and forth. 

Speaking of odd Sims, I tried playing Sim Health but as I recall I couldn't get into it.  There wasn't much to look at, really, though it had a fair amount going on under the hood.  I'd probably appreciate it more now, being older and more conserned with such things. >.>  But blending Maxis with political simulation would be interesting, I think-- I had a fleeting affair with 'The Political Machine', and it was really fun those first few times.  I'm sure they could work up a decent enough 'SimCandidate' by 2012. 

But to be the most honest with myself, all I really want is SimCity 5.  CitiesXL will fill that void when it does come out, but I'd love to really return to Maxis's style.  I still play SimCity 4 rather frequently, and I gave Societies a try, but my system should *not* lag so severely for what is really a much prettier 'SimTown'.  ... And I should shut up about that now. >.>

Hm. An MMO with the freedom of Spore's editors to alter your little corner of the galaxy, and respawn yourself as various critters with the parts you've collected sounds like it has possibilities.  Opportunities for PvP, PvE (campeign against the Grox), etc. abound.  It'd be sort of like Second Life, only with structure... and generally better. >.>  Yeah, I went there.

Spore, IMHO, is a case study in compromises.

Back when I saw the more realistic amoeba evading the others in the early demos, I thought that was really neat.  Like, REALLY neat.  I thought the same thing when I saw the bloody fight on the beach. 

But upon reflection, was it really Maxis?  Those early demos were very cool, but they lacked the penache or sense of humor that Maxis always tried to put into everything.  Now, we have a game that tries-- often TOO hard-- to be whimsical, but now I and others are angry as well, perhaps irrationally, that it's also not the same thing we saw before. 

They had great visions for Spore, but they had to bring it down to Earth and keep it in line with their own traditions, and then they also had to bow to the larger machinations of EA.  Some of the compromises were forced, brought on by technology that just didn't quite pan out, and some were done for *shudder* marketing reasons. 

Would I love to see a game closer to the originals?  In a way, yes.  But I also hold out hope.  How many of us played Sims 2 and said, "Aw, this is great, but if they only had X"....?  A VAST number of EPs later, Sims 2 is as complex a game as many people could ask for, and it's still considered to be aimed at 'casual' players!

I just hope it isn't a multigenre game like spore, that's one of the reasons why it failed.
Maybe an upgraded version of Sim-Earth?

I would LOVE an update of Sim Earth. ;.;  I think with Next-Gen graphics, you could really do some keen things with it.  I'd love to see a cross-section of a planet rendered with today's mechanics, seeing it boiling away inside and life teeming above. 

I'm also a dork who loved Sim Tower-- and I know that he had nothing to do with it, so it's not often spoken of here. >.>  But if he phoned up Yoot Saito again and made an offer I'm sure they could remake another one. 

SimMars also needed to be made, and it wasn't, and that made me a sad panda. >_<  A reimagining of the space race would make a fun game, too, in the vein of his cosmonaut obsession.  Did anyone here ever play 'Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space'?  Super-fun, if super-hard.  Will could finally put the Russians back into space with a game like that.

Just to add my own two sporebucks on this issue...

Firstly, Patch 3 wouldn't work for me; I had to uninstall-reinstall to get that to work, which blessedly it did.  Then I splurged and got C&C, and went to install it, and I got the infamous 'Spore is not installed' error.  After some poking around on the official forums, there was a theory going around that it couldn't find Spore if you installed it under a different language setting on your computer.

I typically run my computer on Japanese mode so I can play.. ahem... imported games.  Now Spore installed and ran just fine under that mode, it didn't care-- but apparently it normally installs with a little (TM) in the directory name structure if you use the proper western/unicode language setting.  Mine didn't have that, and I didn't know what needed to be altered where... so I uninstalled/reinstalled AGAIN, as C&C refused to see Spore without the proper little (TM) symbol in the directory name.  Not even an option to MANUALLY locate Spore-- if it wasn't where it was supposed to be, it just said I didn't have it.

And this time, during the uninstall/reinstall, my saves got corrupted somehow. >_<  I have all of my critters, still, but all of my planets are gone.  My whole galaxy is tablula rasa.  The parts are okay,  but not really worth all of the pain it took through to install the damn thing.  I really, really, REALLY they fix this problem in future parts packs. >_<  Really.

The one line most people seem to reference as their favorite, I usually hear in my head as meaning, "You really got 'em with that, sir!"  Usually after I have successfully defeated an enemy, defended a colony, etc.
