I know what you're referring to, but I have two pretty big beefs to draw with it.

1. There's a list of maybe close to a hundred men (possibly women too, I don't know) who were supposedly sent into space prior to Gagarin's flight and who then disappeared.  But there is no true evidence beyond "leaked information" so the point is moot until some evidence shows up.  Also, Gagarin's flight was, indisputably, the first successful flight.

2. Yuri Gagarin, really, means nothing.  He did not dream up the plan, he did not make the shuttle, he did not direct the project, his training was done with the help of teams of people, during the most critical parts of the trip he was just sitting on his ass.  There are, I'm sure, hundreds or thousands of people responsible for our greatest achievement so far: dipping our toes into the cold black ocean.  But we can't really celebrate hundreds and thousands of people all as icons of how far we've come.  Yuri is a poster boy.  He's a symbol that we can use and see to represent our species going into the great unknown.  Yuri is Magellan, Cook and Columbus.

In short, yes, Yuri Gagarin was the first person to go into space.  He did it only 46 years ago yesterday.

You don't have to do it, it's your choice whether to suffer the species to live or not. How is that 'forcing goals' on us? In fact its much better than having the hostile species stick around no matter what you do, it gives you the option to mold your world by having a say in who lives and who dies.

But, what if you like fighting a certain creature? I wouldn't want them to disappear so easily...  :-\

I think you don't have to accept the 'mission'.

Aye, it almost certainly is optional whether to reject the mission and allow a species to live or accept the mission, gain points and any other rewards, get to bust some heads and then completely wipe a species off your planet (with a mere 5 deaths).

ye... I don't know...  I'd be pretty perturbed to discover there really are no moons but, considering the weight astronomy has been given in all the Wright-bites of the last couple years, it makes absolutely no logical sense that they wouldn't be in.  Several types of completely random stupidity.  And no plant editor?  That kind of exclusion would indeed stay my hand at the games store.  I will still buy Spore eventually, but I wouldn't be excited enough to spend starting price on it. 

Are plants that important to me?  No.  But what are the tools at our disposal to make worlds with?  Creature editor, building editor, vehicle editor, planet editor, plant editor.  That means that by subtracting a plant editor they're cutting out a full 20% of the customization.  And if something of which we've seen screens (plants and moons) are cut, after the wounds of having the water stage cut are finally... and barely healed, then I have to wonder what else would have been cut.

I like the idea of the myth being busted (and absolutely love that pic  ::) ), but outside of those few questions which contradict the official info the article seems to be accurate with its information.

And yes... I know the official site should reassure me...  but it's the whole water-stage incident again... I'm like a child who flinches at a hug cuz he's been beaten.

Now that we finally have a release date (huzzah!) we need info on the min. specs.  Anyone know?  I checked the official site and found nothing, and a search here netted me posts from back in the day when dinosaurs wore diapers...  I'm going to be buying a laptop in a day or two and it would be nice if I didn't have to upgrade it or buy a new one for Spore (cuz I will if I have to... I'm just that crazy...)

On another forum somebody had mentioned that they saw the same person like 4 or 5 times, same building several times, same cars many times in the screens.  It would be need if EA could get (with Maxis approval of course) the procedural generation techniques from Spore and apply them with a randomizer to aspects of SCS.

Ahh... that was never a problem for me because generally I laid my roads first.  When you do that the zones auto-connect to the road.

in SC4 .... the zoning was made terrible by limiting the road tiles to one compulsery side of a zoned section. sooooo many times iv had to zone, unzone, zone, unzone, to get the road spaces actualy conecting with the road.

I don't understand what you mean...  SC4 was the one with the Rush Hour pack, yes?  I never had any problems with roads, you could even cut right through a zone if you wish and it would auto-demolish the buildings...

Just throwing my 2c in on the original topic of "sad it's not multi".  I too wish it was multiplayer. As with the OP the fun for me isn't being "the hero that saves the world" it's being part of a team, socializing and kicking team ass.  It's meeting up with your mates, comparing *put game object-of-interest here* and going off to explore crazy new worlds together.

As one might have guessed, I'm an avid WoW player (on hiatus right now though due to a toasted graphics card) and feel that the fullness of the world is top priority, and the best way to get that fullness is by allowing real people to populate it.

HOWEVER!  I do believe that as it is Spore is going to be absolutely awesome!  But the actual playing of the game is secondary to me.  What draws me to it is the creation, the designing of creatures.  The only feature (not confirmed, denied or even truly addressed) is whether or not there will be functioning ecosystems. If this is the case I'd likely be content to design creatures, plop them down on planets and just see how they make out on their own without my intervention.

I'm plenty excited about it.  It seems (for me anyway) that they took out the tedious parts and left in the awesomeness parts.  Building design, city design, layout are all in.  Making sure all your homes have water, electricity and balancing the budget are out. 

When I play SC4 (and exp.) I just download a money-park and then build a few huge cities...  then spend the rest of my time downloading neat buildings online.  For me it's not about playing a city it's about building a city, like a model kit but it's on my computer.

I loved Alien Planet, never seen Future is Wild.  I also loved (though it's in the other direction) Walking with Dinosaurs.  It's still Speculative Documentary even though it's about prehistory rather than farfuture.

Does anyone know more specifically where this conference will be?  And how easy/hard it will be to get tickets?

I live about an hour outside of Seoul, Korea, the center of which houses the mighty COEX, home to many a games convention and the site where about one month ago Blizzard publicly announced the release of Starcraft 2 (WOOO!!!)  I thought (hoped) that Blizzcon (end of this month) would be there too, but alas...  :(  It's in Anaheim, Florida (US).  :(

If it is indeed in Seoul (seems the most likely candidate if it's in Asia) then I'll do my best to get my digicam fixed by then and see what I can do about being the man on the inside  ;)

edit:  I just found the article...  it's in Santa Monica... where did this talk of Asia come from?

I told my students about it, they seemed kind of keen but I think they were more pleased about spending an hour listening to me talking about a game.  Also my best bud and roomate sees Spore as something cool that's coming.  He's not a huge gamer but he's quite pleased with the creative possibilities of it.

This is something I greatly desire, even more than this (but closely related) I desire to see functioning ecosystems.  This is something that is NEEDED in games before they can start to become real worlds.  I want the animal populations to feed on other animal populations, creatures to hunt specific other animals (possibly yours) and for them to change over time.  I want the changes and evolutions of an animal to be decided not only on your "favorites" in the downloads menu, but moreso on whether or not a creature can survive on your planet.  I want it's population decided by how many times it gets killed TOTAL not just how many times killed by you.  And I want its success decided by how many times it can kill and eat anything rather than how many times it kills you.

We've got to get out of this sollipsist bubble if we're to make real worlds.  It has to start being more about the world than the player.
