Console Games / game rental services

What do you guys think about videogame rental services, e.g. gamefly?  Are they worth the money?  On the one hand, it seems like a good deal to pay $20 per month and play any game I want.  On the other hand, I never get to keep any of the games.  Of course, how much do I really go back and play old games?

What are your opinions?  Are game rental services better or worse than buying games?

Hi all, I have a tech question, and since microsoft tech support is WORTHLESS, I thought I'd ask if any of you have seen this.

I bought Rise of Legends a couple days ago, and I tried to play multiplayer.  (ROL is powered by Gamespy.)  The game prompts you to make an account if you don't have one.  I entered in a screen name and a password, and pressed enter.  Within a few seconds, I got an error:

Gamespy Peer Error #0: Unable to communicate with network or disconnected while attempting to communicate.

At that point, the game just stops.  It doesn't freeze, and I can alt-tab out of it and close it.  But it doesn't go anywhere.

Now I know what you may be thinking: "Is there a firewall or a router?"  The answer is yes, and yes.  But I disabled the firewall and bypassed the router, and it still didn't work.  When I bypassed the router, I actually got a different error message:

Gamespy Error #4: database error.  Please try again.

Also, I tried to play Starcraft multiplayer, which requires the same port that Gamespy claims to (6112), and that worked just fine.

Has anybody else seen this?  Does anybody know what the problem could be?  You can imagine that it's pretty frustrating, I plunk down $50 to play this game, and I can't play multiplayer, and microsoft tech support doesn't know anything about the game so they can't help me.

I've been playing the demo for "Rise of Legends," the new RTS coming out from BHG, for a while now.  I thought I'd post my general feedback, and some questions for the BHG crew, on the site.  I've also invited their community relations manager to read this post, so if any of you have any questions yourself, please feel free to add them to this post, and we might just get an answer.

1) Will the third dimension actually play into the warfare?  Will there be height advantages for attacking/defending troops?

Will this be possible in the final product?  There does not seem to be such a drastic height aspect in the two demo maps.

2) In some screenshots, we see units that don't appear to exist in the demo.  One example is here, with Vinci tanks that have some resemblance to the juggernauts:

Are these just old versions of the juggernauts, or are they another unit?  Will they be in the retail game?  Another example is in the bottom right corner here:

Is this an old version of the cargo dirigible?  Or is it another unit?

3) While the Vinci have many unique game mechanics that I've never seen in another game (e.g. prototype technologies, research buildings that can only be created once per game), the Alin seem to play pretty much like a standard RTS race.  Is this intentional, to make the Alin more comfortable for new players?  Or did the Alin have novel game mechanics that were cut out for various reasons?  Are they getting new game mechanics in the retail version of the game?

4) It seems that a lot of the Alin units stomp on each other's feet in one way or another.  For example, the Rukh looks a lot like the fire elemental, though they have very different attacks.  On the other hand, it seems like the scorpion and the glass crab are basicially the same unit with different stats.  Also. the fire elemental just seems like a stronger version of the afreet.  The units do not seem nearly as specialized as the Vinci units.  Are these units going to be changed at all for the retail version?

5) Again on the topic of Alin vs. Vinci, it seems that the Alin national spell and master unit are both underpowered against their Vinci counterpart.  Have either of these abilities changed at all?  Or are they intended to be weaker for balance issues?
(As a side note, the summon army spell seems only able to summon desert walkers that use the "whirling blades" stance. Why?)

6) In general, the interface is amazing.  I especially like the seige attack, a maneuver that everybody wants to perform but is always a pain to do manually.  But I do notice that sometimes, when I have a subgroup of units selected and I use a spell, all members of the subgroup use the spell.  Specifically, I noticed that with the afreets, and the fire damage spell.  Is this a bug, or is this intentional?  Do these spells stack damage?

7) This is something I've been wondering since RON: Say you have a squad of 9 musketeers.  Then 5 of them die.  Then you bring them back to base, and they heal fully.  Do the 5 remaining musketeers act like a full 9 guys, in terms of health and attack?  They seem to, in that the maximum health of the unit doesn't go down, but on the other hand a single musketeer should be weaker than a squad of 9.

Finally, I'd like to ask the BHG group to release very detailed notes about what units to what type of damage, and exactly how trample works.  Right now, all we know is that some units flatten other units.  Can you give us specific stat charts describing these effects, as well as armor class and tech types?

PC Games / Graphical Glitching Question

I have a question for all you experts on graphics cards. 

I recently got a new graphics card, an Apollo nVidia Geforce 6800 with 128M ram.  I've played two graphics-intensive games with it: Oblivion, and the rough demo for Rise of Legends.   In both games, I occasionally get very large graphical glitches. These glitches are manifested as big opaque polygons that jut out of objects or people.  Basically, it seems like some operation mistakenly puts a single point of an object (or person) way off in the distance, and then the engine stretches surfaces to this new point.  Often the glitch is so bad that I can't see anything, and I simply have to exit the game and restart it.

The question I have is, what's the culprit?  Is it my graphics card?  Is it these two games?  Is it my power supply?  (I have a 350W antec power supply with an amd athalon 2600+, 2 HD's, and the geforece 6800.)  Have any of you experienced this?

PC Games / Oblivion on an O.K system

I'm just wondering if any of you out there have attempted/will attempt to play Oblivion on a less-than-fantastic system.

My computer has an AMD Athalon XP 2600+, 1.5GB RAM, nVidia 6800 vid card.  Do you think it's worth it to get this game and try it, or would I be wasting my money?

I was wondering if any of the MMO's out there right now have a game mechanic where you can buy a store in a city and sell goods (potions, weapons, etc.).  I know very little about MMO's, but I think that type of thing would be awesome.

PC Games / Problem viewing Guild Wars Website?

Is anybody else having this problem?  I have firefox 1.5.0.1, and when I try to look at the guild wars official website, a lot of the pages have screwed up formatting, and a lot of the text is hidden behind flash pictures.  Here's an example of a site that's messed up: http://www.guildwars.com/gameplay/professions/warrior/

is anybody else having this problem?  Is there a simple fix, or is guild war's website just messed up?

Console Games / XBOX 360 or Mega PC?

Hey all,

I was interested in all your opinions on this.  If you had to choose between an XBOX 360 or a souped-up gaming PC, which would you choose and why?  I'm one of the people who still hasn't managed to get my hands on a 360, but at this point I'm much more excited about some PC games coming out (RoL, spore), and the most interesting 360 game is coming out on the PC anyway (Oblivion).  On the other hand, I hate having to constantly upgrade or buy new computers, and deal with compatibility issues, where a console avoids all those problems.  What do you think?
