Movies / Eagle Eye (Spoilers)
« on: September 24, 2008, 10:18:31 pm »
So I got to see an early version of Eagle Eye. Overall it was pretty cool.  There was predictable things like the voice being an AI and the use of the twin factor. And some stretches  but overall it was pretty enjoyable. Reminds you of how much you are really watched. Coming home I noticed the camera in my builds lobby and elevator and looked at them a little different  ;)

My two biggest complaints are that Jerry should have died. Too often it's a happy ending and even though there were gasps in the theatre when he was shot and I felt bad I think it would have worked better when he died. Shooting a gun in his situation I think they would shoot to kill.  The other problem was things like the car chase. It was like transformers where  the scene turned into fast moving metal and explosions and you lose track of what you are actually looking at.

I was almost cracking up at the end as they were yanking the hard drives because the computer failing reminded me of GLaDOS from portal.  Overall though not a bad movie I enjoyed it.

TV / House Season 5 (Spoilers)
« on: September 16, 2008, 09:07:36 pm »
Wilson can't leave!  This is as bad as when they split up the team.  I want the old House back, I'm not liking all these characters leaving. Yeah we still get to see them but it's not as good as Season 1-3 House. I loved Wilson as a foil to House. He better come back.

Spore: General / Things that really bug me so far.. (semi-spoilers)
« on: September 07, 2008, 11:08:52 am »
Now this is not a troll post, I shouldn't even have to say that but the kneejerk reaction around here is absurd. I manged to get the game on Thursday because a certain local office supply store doesn't care about release dates. Which is fine with me. I've played once, and had two friends come over who have also played. In each stage I've noticed areas that I feel could have been improved on.

This is actually quite fun. My biggest problem was no alternate food sources to be found.  The GDC 2005 video after adding a spike Will Wright could eat more food. The ability to do that seems to be gone. Also there is that odd "bouncing" off of creatures when something hits a spike. I am hoping that is more a bug then anything. I can understand a bit of bounce so you don't die instantly, but I've seen them bounce off the screen.

My biggest problem with this game is creature parts. I have no control over what part I get. I can be a completely aggressive creature and get a piece to increase my charm. It's basically useless, but I'm stuck with it. And I might have a level 4 foot and I'm looking for a level 5 foot but discover a new level 1 foot. Chances are I won't go for the level 1 foot because I could probably either already get what it offers or it offers abilities I don't need/want.  I personally would have preferred some sort of purchasing system. Use the DNA point to unlock different levels of the same type of body part. I first buy level 1, then level 2 etc... By that way I could do what spore should be letting me do, design my creature the way I want, not the way I find pieces.  Anyone who has played knows that you will get sentience before you find every piece. And after that you aren't really playing anymore you are just hunting for those last parts you want for your creature.

I also feel the social creatures are a bit at a disadvantage. As a carnivore you can sometimes take on creatures bigger then you. You at least have a chance. As a social creature if your stats aren't equal or higher then the other creatures you don't even have a chance. Not even by luck can you MAYBE get it to like you. Unlike an aggressive creature pulling off a kill.

I don't know what to say about Tribe, it goes by much quicker most of the other stages. I don't know if that's good or bad. It's a shame you can't design buildings in that stage. It would be nice to see more impact from creature stage. The one thing I don't understand is how you apparently become more aggressive for defending yourself.

City Really bothered me the first time. I picked an economic city, I quickly bought out another economic city. The other military civilization quickly took other the other civilization on our continent. So it was me and the military civilization on our continent. I tried to trade with him but he was already angry with me for having an empire that was too large and borders being too close.  So I saved for some boats and started trading overseas.  Well it wasn't long before the military civilization came attacking. I had some turrets, but not enough and I couldn't keep replacing them under the constant waves of attacks.  My vehicles could apparently do nothing against enemy vehicles. It wasn't long before my first city fell. I retreated to my second city and tried everything.  I tried to get one of my oversea allies to attack, but they wanted more money then I could part with. I tried offering the military civilization gifts of money which they were happy to take but still attacked me.  I did the best I could until my city fell.

I now know I need to take over a military city early on instead of the other economic city I took over. It was my first time and I assumed my vehicles had some sort of defense like religious vehicles do.  I'm not a big fan of this model. I like the variety to a degree but personally I would rather have everyone on your planet be the same type of civilization you are. Please don't throw back the "real life" argument at me, this is a game.  If I was playing against only other economic cities then it would be everyone trying to outbuy everyone else. It would be an even playing field and I think it would be more intersting then just the free for all they have now.

This i the stage that upsets me the most because this is the stage that look the most appealing.  My first problem is to really start unlocking things you always have to do the same 'space tutorial' everytime, even if you tell them you already know how to play space.  You still have to go find the ruins and colonize a planet and contact an alien race.

the second thing is missions. These missions are so shallow and repetitive. Go kill X of the little glow creatures on planet Y in Z amount of time.  They just recycle the same missions constantly.

Pirates. My god they are annoying. To no end. I'll be off somewhere else doing a timed mission and it's a pirate attack.. Constantly almost every 5 minutes. I really hope this is some sort of bug because it's currently so stupid.

Painting planets. This annoys me because it's so minor but they make it such a pain. Painting does NOTHING other then change the look of a planet, so why do we have to jump through hoops and go searching empty planet for paint. Not only that You have to find each colour three times! It's just painting a planet why would they make that such a pain to do??

Spice. I have to keep going to my colonies to collect spice?  It's this kind of repetitive chores that make people want to cheat so they can move on in the game.

Terraforming! So I played with terraforming a bit, it's great fun. But I sadly can't terraform my home planet? I wanted to make a water based civilization back when underwater was in the game.  Since that was wanked I decided to terraform my planet to increase the sea level. I realized I would probably lose some cities but it's the look I wanted for my planet. But ... apparently I can't do that.

There is probably more  but I'm tired so I can't come up with the others.

The one final one is the overall game. How your actions judge how you evolve. I like the idea I just don't like how it was implemented.  It seems too linear or constrictive? I don't know, I'm just not a fan. Especially for the Economic city route.  You would think just by hunting and gathering lots of food I could be considered economic. No, I have to befriend three tribes and kill off two others. to make sure I end up economic. To me that doesn't seem like a logical progression. I would love the ability to ally with all the other tribes but still end up economic... and not have to be an "evil" carnivore to do it.

As usual this is nothing more then my opinion. I'm not here to argue my opinion with you, just share it. Aside from the artistic style which I have already said I'm not a fan of. I think there was some relatively small things which would have made things more intersting definitely more fun in my opinion.

PC Games / Space Siege

Has anyone bought this game? I'd like some opinions. I played the demo but it didn't really sell me on the game. I would have liked to play more t get a better feel of the game. So does anyone have it? If you do what do you think.  I'm on the fence about it currently and would like to hear more.

Spore: General / Spore billboards
« on: August 27, 2008, 12:54:29 am »
Do any other cities have Spore billboards and posters up? I've noticed a few and was surprised to see them. Quite a few bus shelters have them.  I've seen a few variations.

I grabbed a picture of one today (with my friend who is highly excited by the games release)

Have any other cities seen these?

Movies / Tropic Thunder

I went to see this last night and I loved it.  I had some reservations I was a bit unsure but it was a great movie. I read an editorial recently how these groups protesting the movie should in fact be giving out tickets. And they are exactly right. Beside the face "retard" is already common in playground settings (where are these people from that they thought this would be the breaking point that unleashed that word to the children?). The point is, the characters saying it hardly have redeeming qualities. They could have said look, see those guys in the movie, they look like fools and they use that word. That's what you look like when you use  the word. Instead they tried to boycott it.  Anyway, great movie I loved it.

Movies / Young People F$%&ing

I saw a trailer for this months ago and thought it looked good. And it's in theatres now, and planned to see it but watching the trailers again I don't find it as funny. Has anyone else seen this, I'm trying to decide if I should see it or not.

Movies / Vantage Point
« on: February 22, 2008, 11:57:34 pm »
Just went to see it today, still deciding what I think. I loved the flash backs where it slowly revealed more. (felt like Lost meets Cloverfield - the fact that Matthew Fox is in it just ties it all up :P ) I think I was stuck in a immature audience they quickly started moaning and complaining about each new vantage. Even though each Vantage was extremely different from the previous.

I think near the end it starts to loose itself. I especially didn't like Dennis Quaid's character the invincible secret agent.

PC Games / Champions Online -- Visit Canada!
« on: February 22, 2008, 06:37:01 pm »
Cryptic is making another superhero MMO. Based off the role playing game Champions. (Not sure why they are doing another superhero MMO). There is a writeup at IGN

It has a line I love

You may live in futuristic Millennium City, but you'll travel to Canada, the moon, the underwater city of Lemuria, and the mystical dimension Qliphotic.

One of these is the odd one out.

PC Games / Audiosurf -- Now with names!
« on: February 15, 2008, 01:20:27 pm »
Well as most of you steam addicts know, Steam released a new game today called Audiosurf. You get to ride your music collecting coloured squares to gain points.  It's pretty addictive, despite the trouble I'm having with the controls, maybe it's because I'm using the keyboard, I should try with mouse.

Oh man, you guys are going to see what I've been playing and LAUGH. An important note about the Audiosurf friend system. It is one way. So if I add someone, they are my friend, but I am not their friend until they add me. There is no prompt that I saw saying someone added you as a friend so we are basically going to tell each other who added who.

Now, the list. It's forum username and then Audiosurf username. If you want me to add your name just send me a PM. I'll add people as I add them to the list

So Production starts on Febuary 13th, and I'm now officially worried. Channing Tatum has been cast as Duke. He's way to young for that role, I'm crying inside.

Movies / In the Name of the King <exclusive pictures>
« on: January 03, 2008, 10:32:07 pm »
What seems like an eternity ago I was on the set of "In the Name of the King". Seeing that the movie is finally coming out I thought I would share a very small collection of photos I took while on the set.

Just a picture of the throne

Filming equipment

The infamous greenscreen to which some think has become a crutch of movie making

Catapaults! They throw heavy objects.

A friendly reminder to residents not to panic at the sight of siege gear and men in armour near the baseball diamond.

Music / The Return of The Spice Girls..starting now!
« on: December 02, 2007, 12:36:57 pm »
Well it's starting..
The Spice Girls comeback tour starts tonight  about just 10 blocks away from my place.  The number of people I know who tried to get tickets, who have tickets, who bought tickets on craigs list and ebay and who are going to try and buy tickets tonight is staggering..

In response of course many city merchants have brought old spice girl stuff out.. I honestly never thought I'd see them come back.. at least after today my little part of the world will calm down on spice mania..

Movies / The Mist - !Spoilers!
« on: November 24, 2007, 01:03:28 am »
Having never read the book I went to this expecting at least an amusing horror movie. It was so much better then that. They really took advantage of human psychology, it wasn't just people endless dying (well it was).  In the theater I saw it in, when the crazy bible lady was shot it erupted into clapping and cheering. It was amusing. I also loved the music played after they get in the car. it just vibrated in your chest.  That was some crazy bass. And I have to say, that was one of the more depressing movie endings I've seen in quite a while. When they showed the tanks the entire theatre just gasped.  I enjoyed the movie far more then I thought I was going to.  My biggest complaint would be the CGI was a bit iffy.

And I kept staring at Laurie Holden the whole time thinking she was Amy Smart  :P
