Everything Else / Steve's looking for a portable multimedia player
« on: July 26, 2006, 03:44:23 pm »
Just heard on Episode 57 that Steve is looking for a portable multimedia player. I myself have a Archos AV400 Portable Video Recorder. I've had it for about 18 months and I think it is great. It has a 40 gig harddrive, it plays mp3, avi, divx and xvid so there is no converting or digital rights management. It also plays back fotos und you can make playlists for your mp3 files. You can hook it up to any TV with a Scart-Connector (cables are included) to play back your videos or fotos on a large screen if you want to. You can even record to it from your TV.It also comes with a remote control which is very handy when you have it plugged into your TV. It's own screen is much bigger (more than double) than the one of the Ipod, which I think is ridiculous. Meanwhile they are distributing their next generation models that have an even bigger screen than mine. I can only recommend this player :-)

PC Games / Video game Music
« on: February 11, 2006, 02:22:50 am »
The other day I was searching on the interet to find a way to extract the music from my Dungeon Siege games when I stumbled upon a great site that has tons and tons of video game soundtracks: Galbadia Hotel (http://gh.ffshrine.org/).
I like listening to music from games I played the same as to music from movies I have seen. But in a way music from video games is much more personal because you spend hours and hours immersed in a game as opposed to the 90 minutes it takes to watch a film - so it grows on you much more.
Another interesting music-related site is Music 4 Games (http://www.music4games.net) which features many interviews with game music composers.
Check it out!

PC Games / King Kong Gamers Edition sucks!!!
« on: November 29, 2005, 09:23:01 am »
There is a high resolution edition of Peter Jackson's King Kong available to buy and download at Ubisoft. As I recently built myself a new gaming computer that meets the specified system requirements, I wanted to try it and see what the graphics looked like. Guess what: the game is unplayable, even with minimum settings. I am in contact with Support at Ubisoft, but all they suggested so far was the standard stuff like defragmenting, installing the latest drivers and turning off all background tasks - all to no avail.
I then started to search the internet and found out that nobody is able to play this game, not even with a nVidia 7800GTX SLI setup! How can they sell something like this, a game that nobody can run???
I'm curious if the Support guys will come up with a solution or a patch. So for me it's back to CIV IV, Dungeon Siege II and Pariah.

Books / Masters of Doom
« on: November 09, 2005, 03:15:02 pm »
Hey, has anybody read "Masters of Doom" by David Kushner? It's a great history of Id Software and its founders, how they grew up, got to know each other and started programming games.
I just finished Doom 3, and in between played some of the first game. If you've read the book, you get a whole new dimension to the game. You kind of get an idea why they made things look the way they do, and its almost as if you know the guys (that were) at Id.
I know its not a new game, but about in the middle I built myself a new gaming machine and afterwards was able to run it at the highest settings - the game still just looks awesome!!!

PC Games / Dungeon Siege II Save Games
« on: September 13, 2005, 09:52:13 am »
Hi Steve. Just heard on Podcast 20 how your game got corrupted and you had to reinstall. Each time I stop playing, I zip my save game files to a different archive - hopefully that way I will be able to restore at least one of them later, if something crashes... (wasn't my idea, read about it somewhere).
I'm having a lot of fun with the game too, and I really love the backgraund music! There's just a little detail that kind of spoils the great graphics for me: during battles the character your attacking is sort of outlined with a orange glow. If you zoom in close to see whats going on, you can't see the details of that character too well. Nothing's perfect.
