Console Games / PS3: Users, Master Accounts and Sub-accounts
« on: December 28, 2009, 01:37:32 pm »
I got a PS3 for Christmas and I can't quite figure out the best way to set up the users in the house and link them to the online PS3 accounts.  I guess you can either set-up several "master accounts" on a playstaion or one master account with several people under that account.  Which is the best way to do this?  The playstation implied that subaccounts wouldn't be able to purchase things or play 16+ games.  Basically I want the best way to set up all the adults of the house.

PC Games / Eufloria (previously known as Dyson)
« on: October 22, 2009, 06:08:59 pm »
Anbody enjoying the game previously known as Dyson... aka Eufloria?  I really liked the demo and I'm about 4 hours into the game and quite enjoying it.  The levels are procedurally / randomly generated to a certain extent which might have some appeal to people (I seem to recall a thread asking this very question).  The game also considers itself to be part of the new "ambient gaming" genre such as Osmosis.

Spore: General / Expansion Bundles
« on: August 07, 2009, 09:33:18 pm »
I was kinda hoping that Galactic Adventures and Cute and Creepy might be made availible in a bundle.  Thus far I have been disappointed.  Has anybody heard anything at all about the expansions being bundled at some point?  They have done this with the Sims in the past.

Console Games / Tiger Woods 2010
« on: August 02, 2009, 06:56:31 pm »
I got Tiger Woods 2010 for the wii. Just getting in to it, but I noticed the weather in the courses is wrong. It says it's spring even though I have the real time weather set to on. Anyone else experienced this?

PC Games / Shift from Family gaming PC to single user
« on: June 04, 2009, 06:35:33 pm »
I've noticed in recent years there has been a sizeable shift from developers to move from assuming that families are sharing computers and the games on them to that of a single user computer.  The biggest impact this has had is on games that have an online component and could be seen in a one serial number one screen name approach.  My two most recent experiences have both been with EA games.

The first is spore, initially they only allowed one account per game which meant family members all uploaded their creatures to the same accounts.  This upset alot of people because the ownership over their creatures and wanted to take credit for them.  Not to mention brother might not like sister's subscription to the unicorn channel (or perhaps vice versa).  As part of their back tracking on the DRM, EA did eventually allow sub accounts.

The Sims 3 also provides no sub accounts.  Again if more than one family member wants to use the online interfaces (the exchange) and upload their customizations they all get lumped together.  The origional sims had built in functionality to allow for 5 sub accounts.

From a philosohpical sense this trend shows either a lack of awareness or worse, an intentional disregard for family gaming.  It also ignores the ecomonmic realities for most -- simply the Smith family is not going to buy 3 copies of a game for $150 so the 3 children can each have their own accounts.  Perhaps this is what the developers wish would happen.  The most user friendly options would be to allow either sub accounts or allow 3-5 registrations per account key or computer.  The current system means most families will "suffer" through sharing accounts.  Sharing first person shooter gaming stats or creative content is less than ideal of most people.  I wonder if a fair compromise would be to allow additional registrations for a small fee of 5 - 10 dollars.

Interestingly, utility developers who in my experience have often disregarded this reality have recognized multi computer households. My anti-virus program for example allows 3 simultaneous registrations for 3 seperate computers.  Gaming has gone the opposite direction whether it is FPS, Spore, the sims or Steam.  The focus is one user, one key, one account.

I guess where I'm going with all this is that I'm disppointed the direction things are going despite the many possible creative solutions.

PC Games / EA games are now offered through Steam
« on: December 19, 2008, 01:37:17 pm »
FYI... EA games is now starting to release games through steam including Spore, Deadspace, crysis series, red alert 3, mass effect and war hammer online to name a few.  Maybe they will be giving up on their less functional EA downloader program.

PC Games / Securom Blues - Sims 2
« on: October 24, 2008, 01:05:41 pm »
My wife installed the Sims 2 apartment life patch that just came out yesterday.  Now when she tries to play the game she gets a "Conflict with Emulation Software detected" which is complete BS as she's played the Sims 2 for years with no problems.  We're both advanced users and tried a few things... the standard uninstall reinstall... eliminate most things from msconfig etc..  I've sent off a tech support to EA including the /secuexp analysis file their online support suggests we send along.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

What are other people's experiences?

Spore: General / Spore Physics
« on: October 05, 2008, 09:17:21 am »
Has any one noticed any physics effects that surprised them during the game?  My first came near the galactic core when I was checking out a planet and I noticed that the reflection of the sun was still present after a point in which I thought the planet should be blocking it.  Then I remembered that during a sunset the Earth's atmosphere does refract light in a way that if you drew a straight line towards what you thought was the sun, you'd miss it completely.  I wonder if that's going on here. Bellow is a video I made of this.

The second video is by someone else who video taped a star system moving.  There person was stuck in a system (perhaps by getting there by detouring) but another star moved its way into range. I'm not sure if this is physics or just the game giving a person a way out.

Spore: General / My Spore Page (Bug? or Feature?)
« on: September 22, 2008, 07:35:03 pm »
I've noticed in pre and post patch that my in game events page is litered with events that my "buddies" have performed on other creatures that are not my own.  I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a feature in that I can see what my buddies have done... or if it's a bug -- perhaps it's reporting the events that have happened to creatures I have met in game but are not my own.  At any rate, my spore page is flooded with these reports to the point that I can not see what has happened, if anything to the creatures I have made.

Spore: General / Multiple screen names WILL be allowed
« on: September 17, 2008, 09:35:56 pm »
I would just like to say to EA:  Thank you!  Thank you! Thank you!  This is a most fair reponse.

Post from MaxisLucy

Hi Spore Players,

First, we want to thank you for your responses and feedback to my posting from Friday regarding Online Accounts and clarifying how things work. We’re listening and we want to announce some changes that we are making based on your feedback.

We are going to add the ability to have multiple Spore Screen Names for any one Spore Online Account. Here’s how this will work: for each copy of Spore that you have purchased, you will be able to have one Spore Online Account, just as it is now. However, we will be adding the ability to have five Spore Screen Names for that account. When you launch Spore, you will be able to log in with any of those Screen Names.

The content that is made and the MySpore Page will be associated with the logged in Screen Name for that account. Each Screen Name will be able to view and create content, Buddy Lists and Sporecasts that will be tied to that Screen Name. The Achievements earned will be credited to the Screen Name that is logged in at the time the Achievement is triggered. In the first iteration of this change, all Screen Names will be playing in the same Galaxy and any content downloaded by any Screen Name will be available in the Everything section.

We will be putting the ability to add Screen Names to a Spore Online Account on our website. If you already have the game, and want to add new Screen Names to your account you will be able to do so there.

We felt that this was a good step in the right direction to begin to respond to the feedback you have given us and evolve Spore (not with an extra set of arms in this case but definitely using our DNA points for the better good). We are aggressively working on this now; we will get back to you with more information on timing as soon as possible.

Spore: General / Should I get Galactic Edition or Prima Game guide.
« on: September 03, 2008, 09:44:01 pm »
I'm debating whether to get the Spore Galactic Version or theLimited Edition Prima Game game guide with the regular game.

The galactic version comes with 2 DVD videos, game manual, artwork book and a poster.  The Limited Edition Game guide comes with game guide, lithographs, poster

Getting the Limited edition game guide and the basic game combined cost the same as the Galactic version (75 cdn).  I figure getting all 3 is getting a little too extravagant (who spends 100 bucks on a game anymore?) and that there might be overlapping content.

For the people that have received any of the products, do you have a recommendation?

Console Games / Any good Wii games for groups?
« on: August 12, 2008, 08:21:34 am »
I'm having a few friends come over this week who are not gamers but have really enjoyed wii sports and guitar hero.  I was thinking of getting another group game that they might find ridiculously fun all of the "party games" for the wii that I have found got fairly bad reviews.  Anybody have recommendations for me?  Thanks!

Spore: General / Multi-User PC's
« on: February 15, 2008, 03:45:24 pm »
I know this has been touched on a little bit.  But now that it is clear that "myspore" pages and a social networking feel will be strong in the game I wonder if the game will allow more than one "creator" per game and how will it handle that?
