Storytelling and Roleplaying / Nexus Point - A Space RP
« on: March 26, 2010, 08:57:55 pm »
It's been several centuries since the dawn of the Great Space Age and the formation of the Coalition. A new unexplored and, as of yet, uninhabitable world has been found on the edge of Coalition space. This world, tentatively called Genesis, was found to be rich in numerous minerals and materials including the rare element that powers most faster-than-light drives, doridium-3. Soon after, a massive space station was planned and started construction in orbit around the planet. It was the most massive engineering and construction project undertaken by the Coalition in at least fifty years, and was completed just last year. Now, as terraforming gets under way people, business, and organizations of all sorts have gathered looking for the next big opportunity to come. They've come to the starting point. They've come to the mega-station and central hub for terraforming and mining efforts on Genesis; they've come to Nexus Point Station.

Storytelling and Roleplaying / A Sci-Fi/Space RP OOC
« on: March 24, 2010, 01:51:46 am »
Ever want to write for or be a cheesy 50's Space Hero? Want to write the next Space Opera? Ever want to write a space-based science fiction adventure? Well, here's your chance!

This post is here to generate interest and discuss the possibilities of starting a Sci-Fi/Space based RP. I know right now there are a lot of RPs running (Steam, Super, Grand, and so on) but with Super and Grand getting ready to wind down I figured I'd attempt to take a whack at running an RP in a setting that we've not done before. Would anyone be interested in this? I will layout the background and a couple of ground rules that will make writing in this genre a bit easier. More info will drop as things get discussed here/I think of them.

Basic of the Basic Rules
  • The world should be new, and NOT based on any existing IP (Intellectual Property, IE Star Wars, Star Trek, etc).
  • Your character should make sense, and be easy to interact with. You can be an alien, a robot, a human, or whatever else you can think of but you must be understandable. Aliens must be translated (except where the plot demands that they shouldn't be), by which if you are an alien character talking to a human you should talk/post in English. If you want to indicate that speech or internal monologue is translated please use the ~ key before "quotations" or italics.
  • Please keep the technobabble to a minimum when possible. While it may be fun to write, it makes the story harder to understand for others and more difficult for others to respond to. Keep it simple.
  • Please limit the use of advanced technology. Especially technology that is solely beneficial to your character. If you have something like shields, make sure another player is capable of bringing them down. That is to say, don't god-mod yourself unnecessarily. We are basically following "Pop" Sci-fi writing, which means that even though lasers travel at the speed of light, you character could still dodge, survive, or be missed. In other words, all characters (villains and 'primitive' characters should be the occasional exception) should be about the same technological level.
  • Explain your tech. You don't need to know how it works, or anything like that but your character/you should always be able to describe what your tech does (unless the story demands otherwise).

Prologue
It's been several centuries since the dawn of the Great Space Age and the formation of the Coalition. Background
The Coalition acts as a political body for the numerous space-faring races as well as acting as a mediator when a member race has a dispute with another member race. Should diplomacy fail, peace is often enforced through the deployment and use of the Paramilitary Defense Forces, Intergalactic; other wise known as the PDFI. Members of the Coalition can still maintain their own military forces, though most do not. Not all races are members of the Coalition, but these are generally looked down upon by those that are, or are treated with fear, hatred, and as if an enemy.

Movies / "Summer Wars"
« on: March 07, 2010, 08:06:25 pm »
If you can't appreciate Sci-Fi and/or animated movies (specifically Japanese Animation aka Anime), then Summer Wars may not seem like an interesting title to you at first, but I would recommend giving it a chance. I realize I am talking to a particularly small audience with this topic, but I figure it's worth mentioning anyway.

Summer Wars is a story about Kenji Koiso, a 17-year old math whiz who just missed out representing Japan in the "Math Olympics", and actions both himself and the actions of the family of his crush, Natsuki Shinohara, in saving both the virtual and physical world from chaos. There exists a digital world, a program called OZ in which users interact with each other and are capable of performing both real-world tasks such as filing your taxes and shopping as well as play games and socialize world wide. OZ is protected by the most advanced security encryption protocol there is (the movie says it's 2,056 digits encryption, though I think this is a script error as 2,048 bit encryption would be the correct key size (1024*2)) and is used for everything from local government and city management to hosting martial arts/fighting competitions. Little does anyone realize that those security measures will soon backfire when in the course of one night, OZ's main system password is decrypted and hacked. Chaos ensues, and in it's wake one family and one 17-year old boy stand up against insurmountable odds to take back the digital world of OZ, and stop the chaos from spreading and killing possibly millions.

It is a really quality movie, that (in my opinion) merges several genres quite seemlessly. This movie is as much a family drama and action movie as it is a Sci-Fi one. It does suffer from a few culture shock moments, specifically since the game of Japanese card game of hanafuda becomes somewhat important later on. It is still overall pretty easy to follow, and pretty engaging. I would probably classify it as more "soft Sci-Fi" than "hard Sci-Fi" though there are aspects one could consider 'hard' Science Fiction. There are just a few things that are factually wrong (besides the 2056 bit key encryption), but they can be ignored for purposes of the fiction and those errors themselves are throw-away lines of only minor importance.

I just finished watching this movie, dubbed in Japanese but subtitled into English, and it appears it is coming to the UK sometime in September. I would highly recommend it if you are a fan of Sci-Fi or/and Anime.

Console Games / Demon's Souls
« on: November 03, 2009, 12:49:36 am »
This game is freaking hard. Well once you know the weakness of a boss/enemy and how to combat them it's not as bad but seriously, it's still not all that easy. Is anyone else playing this? Anyone around Soul-LV14 and want to take on the Tower Knight? I got a bad connection and was dropped just before me and some other people were about to kill it. I want to get out of Soul-Form, but dare not try to take that thing on by myself.

TV / Glee
« on: September 17, 2009, 12:47:37 am »
Seriously? Am I the only one here watching this show?

For those that don't know, Glee is musical comedy show that at times inserts bits of deep emotional drama. It's by the creator of Nip/Tuck (not that I ever watched that show before, but if you did then check this one out), and is full of geeky and campy things. It's basically about a high school, the faculty, the student body, and how music flows through us all.

It's a funny show, and should be a must watch for anyone who loves music.

Here.. two YouTube clips/songs from the show/soundtrack.

Gold Digger, as performed by the Glee Club cast of Glee (Original song by Kanye West and Jamie Foxx).

On my Own, as performed by Lea Michele (as Rachel Berry) from the hit musical Les Miserables.

One more... I think...

Spore: Sporepedia Exchange / Baseball Season
« on: October 21, 2008, 01:52:50 pm »
I was bored, so I did a bunch of baseball themed creations. They center around the Philadelphia Phillies, being that I live outside of Philly and support just about every other Phillies team (except the 76ers, but the Bulls suck anymore, so I don't follow basketball at all, anyway back on topic). I know there has to be some die hard (I'm not one) Baseball fans out there. I'd like to see you guys create things based around your favorite team or the sport in general.

Spore: General / Vehicle Painting/Texture Errors
« on: September 27, 2008, 06:24:22 am »
There may be a thread about this that I am forgetting and can't find right now, if there is please move this there.

Lately I'm noticing a lot more errors when painting/texturing vehicles. It seems to be getting progressively worse and it's a sudden thing. They worked fine for awhile and now it's starting to mess up.. I don't know if it's because I removed the "High Def" mod or if something is has just gone wonky. I'm going to check my graphic card settings and set it back to default and see if the problem is because it's overriding the program. Here are some examples.

Edit: It should be worth mentioning that when actually INSIDE the editor (these were taking from the SporePedia view), the graphical glitch is minimal, it is still there in some cases, but in a minimal fashion.

Edit: Edit: Goddamned Geocities isn't displaying the pictures correctly. Switched them to links.

Edit: Edit: Edit: Copy and Paste the links into your address bar. Geocities is now not allowing links to be directly clicked. Argh.. god damn I'm about to just pay Photobucket the crappy 20 dollars they want for Premium so I can avoid this hassle.

Final Edit: Blargh. Updated Photobucket... changed crappy Geocities links to Photobucket pictures.

Spore: General / Floating Weapons (Vehicle)
« on: September 24, 2008, 02:16:34 pm »
I doubt I'm the only one who managed to do this, but weapons that float off the vehicle seem to be fairly simple.

I made this:

I went back into to edit it before uploading it and accidently made this:

I renamed it and uploaded both.

It actually seemed quite strange, because the smaller I made the saucer, the further out the weapons got.

So anyone else do this? Anyone find a more repeatable/easier method (without using other floating pieces)?

Spore: General / Drunk/Tired Creations
« on: September 23, 2008, 10:29:27 pm »
A while back, people were saying how they wanted to create creatures and stuff while drunk and/or tired. Have people done this yet? If so, the results?

This might not belong in this forum.. I dunno.. I'm to tired to think straight... Time for bed...

Oh wait.. speaking of tired.. I just made these things a few minutes ago. I'm exhausted and the results were crazy. :-/

Edit: They're so bad I'll probably delete them in the morning when I wake up and feel like it... but for now... bah.. I know they are horrible.

This is a twist on the current model of threads going on here. Instead of posting our stuff to garner comments/critiques, post another GamingSteve member's work that you like/enjoy/have had an experience with. Basically, choose someone else's creation and comment on it/post it here.

I'll go first.

Creator: Beatnuki
Creation Name: Lemming War Mech

Comments: This is just to awesome for words. It's just outstanding craftsmanship and attention to detail. Great creativity to make, even if it's based off of something 'real'.

You guys will NEVER appreciate how hard it was for me to pick this. I was trying to avoid some of the more well known GS Members such as Parka, Ahavo, Hydro and so on. Only because I wanted to highlight some other good GS creators, but it was FAR to hard to narrow down who I wanted to pick from. I eventually wound up just kind of choosing on a whim. I need some more crappy creators in my Buddy List... if only to make me appreciate how good some of you people are. Jeez... you guys are to good. Even some of the less featured members of GS had me flabbergasted. I kept going back and forth between people like WetherMAN32, Darcie, GZillaFan, and a slew of others.
