Spore: General / Sporedum Editorial: Spore GA, success or failure?
« on: September 02, 2009, 11:28:26 pm »
I have always thought that critical thinking was missing in large from the Spore community. I therefore am now going to post regularly over at Sporedum about controversial issues in the Spore community. Every few weeks i will be posting a Sporedum Editorial, discussing the latest events of the Spore world in-depth. I do hope you enjoy and comments is most appreciated! We are looking for people who wish to write about events in the spore community so if you are interested please comment below or over at sporedum.

Editorial: Spore Galactic Adventures, success or failure?

It has now been 2 months since the release of the popular first expansion to spore, Galactic Adventures, and in this time, plenty has been said on its merits, and where it failed. Spore Galactic Adventures was built to revive the dream that was partially lost in Spore, by not only enhancing the space stage through the addition of adventures, but allowing players to create their own missions for thousands of others to play.

The lead up to Spore Galactic Adventures was rather large for an expansion, with Maxis teaming up with Robot Chicken to create some exclusive adventures which have become very popular. Another key factor in the run up to the release was the Adventure Camp, which helped, along with the Robot Chicken adventures, to hype Galactic Adventures up to being a game making engine, one which could rejuvenate Spore, and give it the much needed kick it needed.

It is been 3 months since the stunning release of BetterSpore 1.5. Since the 14th of March, there has been over 10,000 downloads from our official server, and up to 20,000 from across the internet, making BetterSpore the most popular mod for Spore. It has been featured in magazines, and we even had Maxis talking to us about how we balanced the gameplay (I can't really say to much more about that though :) )

Sporedum: Uber Creation Contest Post

Spore Programs: Uber Creation Contest Post

Well we have finally come to the crunch time in the competition. The Judges have selected their top 10 in each category and now it is time for you to vote for the most Uber Creation of all!

Now that the Poll cheating bug has been fixed on the official forum (US), we felt that it would be best to host the voting on the official forums (US).

Over the next 12 days, we will post up 4 competitions, each running for 3 days on the 4 areas: Creature, Vehicles, Buildings and Spaceships. You will only be able to vote for each category during the 3 days, as we will change the sticky around to the new competition and the poll will end.

The creator of the creation which gets the most votes will receive a free copy of Galactic Adventures.

We are sorry if any creation did not make it, as there were some amazing creations which did not make the cut, thanks to everyone who entered!

Sporedum: SecuRom Removal Program

Well after years of SecuRom, there is now finally a program to remove SecuRom. Midfingr from Reclaim your Game has created a program to remove all aspects of SecuRom from your computer. Here at Sporedum we would like to congratulate them on the brilliant program, and thanks also to SporePrograms which successfully used it on Spore.

Spore: General / Spore Hero Video
« on: May 08, 2009, 06:01:50 am »
A new video for Spore Hero (Wii) has been released, which shows the creature editor and some of the interactions in the game.

Sporedum has created a Spore Hero page where you can get the latest Spore Heroes news, and also a Spore Heroes Video page for all the videos related to the game.

There are currently no Screenshots, but when they are posted, i'll post them here.

Past news:
MTV Multiplayer Spore Hero

Last week  it was announced that Stone Librande (lead designer of Galactic Adevntures) would be holding lectures at 3 universities: Georgia Institute of Technology (on the April 10), University of Southern California (April 16) and Carnegie Mellon University (May 1). Sporedum got in touch with Georgia Insititute of Technology and organized an email interview with one of the attendees, Justin Smith who is a User Experience Designer at Roundbox Global and is doing a Master of Science in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).

For the full interview, head over to Sporedum.

Sporedum: What is your opinion so far on Spore Galactic Adventures?

Justin: I think this is a very interesting solution to what seemed to be Spore’s biggest criticism, the gameplay. The creation part of it was the most fun to me and Maxis seemed to realize this and decided to allow users to create the gameplay. So far, it appears extremely deep and allows for an enormous amount of customization to almost any aspect you can imagine. I really like the fact that I have the choice of either spending the time to create a game myself or I can dive straight in and play games other people have created. I don’t remember seeing this, but I definitely would like a rating system so I can easily tell what games other people created are fun. I thought that the game looked very promising and took the extremely fun creation aspect of Spore to an exponentially higher level.

For more of Galactic Adventures news, videos and screenshots go to Sporedum's Galactic Adventures page.

UPDATE (15th April):  We are now offering a prize for the winning entry, a free copy of Galactic Adventures! The creator of the winning submission will win a copy of Galactic Adventures, and an exclusive interview with Sporedum. We have also increased the amount of creations  you can enter which you made  to 4, so start entering them now!

Note: This is for all countries, not just America and Canada. And is in no way related to Maxis.

Over the last year, ever since the Creature Creator was released in June 2008, there has been some amazing creations created. In a quest to find the best of these 94,000,000 creations, Sporedum and Sporeprograms have teamed together to find the best creations, in the Uber Creation Contest! There are 4 categories for creations to enter: Creatures, Buildings, Vehicles and Spaceships.

And guess what! You get to decide who wins!

How will this work?

Everyone submits creations (you can only submit one of your own), and then our judges (who can't enter) will sort through the masses of creations to decide on the best 10, then we will post them all over at sporedum and sporeprograms and then you decide on the one to win!

The judges currently include: Grimbot, Virakotxa, smallboy1995, beta_psi and techno605

To find all the rules and details on how to enter, head over to Sporedum!

Spore: General / Sporedum Q&A with Maxis!
« on: April 07, 2009, 02:35:11 pm »
Sporedum recently had the opportunity to interview Stone Librande, lead designer of Spore Galactic Adventures, on a variety of topics. Some of the questions are very similar to the ones in the Community Interview, this is because Sporedum sent of the questions before that was announced.

Sporedum: How integrated will the missions be with the Space stage? Will we find missions scattered about the galaxy like other user content, or are they separate, sort of like a Spore Arcade?

MaxisStone: In the Space stage an Empire will give you a mission to go on an adventure. If you accept the mission then an icon will appear on the galactic map showing you the location of the planet. Once you arrive at that planet you can beam down from your spaceship and attempt to complete the mission. If you fail you can try again as many times as you like. If you succeed then you need to return to the Empire that gave you the mission and collect your reward. (After completion the adventure planet remains in your galaxy and you can visit it to replay that adventure any time you like. However, you will no longer receive any rewards.)

For players that don’t want to play the Space stage there is a mode called “Quick Play”. This is the more like a Spore Arcade where you can quickly browse and sort through all the adventures and try them out by clicking a play button.

You can read the full Q&A here.

Many of you know me as the creator and writer of Sporedum, or as Ball Lightning the creator of the BetterSpore mod. Now Sporedum is going to be featuring the creators of the best Spore creations, and you get a say in who should be featured. Over 2000 people per day visit Sporedum, providing the perfect opportunity to show of your favorite creator's creations.

If you have a creator you wish to feature, please post below with at least 4 examples of there best work, including links to their profile and those 4+ creations.

NOTE: you cannot suggest yourself.

Spore: General / Mod: Play as an Epic
« on: April 03, 2009, 05:19:43 am »
What is Nineballfool's Uber Epic Mod?

This mod allows you to play the creature game as a true "uber" epic. You can now effectively be an epic. Have fun!

This mod was made for combat purposes, you can socialize if you want, but it is not tested.

1.) Your creature will start with 1,000 healthpoints and could go as high as 5,000 healthpoints (formula=base healthpoints multiplied by 100)

2.) Your creature's damage is pretty much "one hit kill" (except against other epics and rogues)

3.) your creature will have the epic stomp, strike and spit attack animations and sounds (to get the stomp/strike the strike is random....your creature will either strike the opponent or stomp him with his foot...spit animation by clicking the spit icon)

4.) your creature will have all the sounds of an epic......foot steps....screaming

5.) the screen will shake as you walk...just like when the epics are nearby

6.) no hunger drain

7.) lowered the amount of nest members to 1....a few show up sometimes....but they disappear...if you cannot find the mate icon and one will appear

8.) increased the viewing you can see things farther away (this may depend on the quality of your video card)

BetterSpore - Spore Mod

What is BetterSpore?

BetterSpore is a community made mod which has been used by thousands of people. It attempts to make spore a better and more enjoyable game, we are now extending this goal to include new content for spore.

Its been a long wait, but the new version of BetterSpore is just over the hill. This will be the largest change ever with new additions and changes to everything. One of the prominent features will be all the hidden cell parts, the grox parts and over 10 community made parts. We have also extended our space tools to include 10 new tools which have animation never before seen in the space stage. To see some of what BetterSpore has to offer watch this YouTube video:

Better Spore Trailer 1.5

All the latest media content for Better Spore.

Better Spore Features:
- All the hidden cell parts for you to use in the creature stage
- All the hidden grox parts for you to use in the creature stage
- Over 10 new custom parts with complete textures for you to use in the creature stage
- Over 10 new items created by xerox with stunning graphics and new effects
- Major changes to the balance of the civilization stages
- Extended Creature and Tribal stages
- Space stage overhaul
- Many other changes, all to be announced later

Question: Will these new parts be uploadable to the sporepedia?

Answer: Sadly it will not be able to, however we are hopeful we can come up with a agreement with Maxis on getting them past the filters.

Question: Will creatures with the new parts be able to save?

Answer: At the moment some of the grox parts and all the cell parts do not save properly, and we are continuing to look into this. However if we are unable to fix the issue we will be releasing a hack which will allow you to save anyway.

Question: Will the creatures with new part pollinate?

Answer: Any creature which will save will be able to pollinate.

Question: Will we need to start a new game?

Answer: We strongly advise anyone using the new version of BetterSpore to start a new game, however make sure you do not play that save version without the mod. You will be able to play an old game with BetterSpore but that game may encounter bugs.

Question: Where are all the artifacts i heard about last month?

Answer: We are working to get them into 1.5, however it may not be possible and will be released in a patch or 1.6.

Question: When will BetterSpore 1.5 be released?

Answer: Hopefully by early March.

Question: Will it all be in one package or can i get the parts separately?

Answer: There will be 3 packages, BetterSpore complete (all the features), BetterSpore parts (parts/editor changes only, no gameplay changes) and BetterSpore tools (Space tools only).

Spore: General / Preview: New Parts
« on: January 30, 2009, 09:57:10 pm »
Over the last few weeks me, Mettra and Virakotxa have been working on making new parts for spore. After getting them into the game, they were still black just the same way that Void's Glasses were, however we have done a proof of concept texture. You can see the created creature in the video below.

Do you want to have a specific part? Post other in our Official Part Request thread or post in this topic.

We are always looking for new modelers to help out the workload. If you are good at 3D modeling and are interested in making new parts first read this tutorial, then if you are ok with it head over to the BetterSpore forum and post in the Better Spore Development team thread. Feedback is always welcomed.

Q. Will the creatures which contain these modded parts be able to upload to the Sporepedia?

A. It is theoretically possible, as Virakotxa has shown with her creature which contained Void's glasses. However that was on auto-upload and so far testing has shown that we can not upload it and make it successful when clicking the share button. We will be trying to contact EA to see if we can make it so it will be like C&C and have it so that people who don't have the mod will get a '?' and will not be effected while people with the mod can play with it.

Q. Will new parts effect my saved games or my spore game?

A. This mod will be safe and secure, we will have many people Alpha test it. Also it uses the same format as patch 1.03.
