Spore: General / Procedural Diplomacy
« on: February 21, 2007, 05:17:49 pm »
It seems to me that the general consensus on this board is that we do NOT want simplistic diplomacy. We want options to customize and create our own stories... and being restricted to basic choices such as 'trade resources' really limits that. I don't know if this is a viable idea, but hear me out:

In the venerable GDC 2005 Demo, we got a glimpse into the procedural actions we are capable of in the game. Grab + Move = Drag. What if that concept was carried over into diplomacy? For example, if I combined 'Tribute 2,000 Iron/Year' and 'Planet Xuno'... perhaps that causes a result of 'My empire gets exclusive mining priveleges on Xuno for X years' or somthing like that. Of course, standard, non-combinable options like 'Peace' and 'War' should exist... but I think that having the capability to combine diplomatic ideas would infinately expand the amount of actions one could perform in diplomacy.

Spore: General / Depth of Diplomacy
« on: January 17, 2007, 07:01:25 am »
I'll admit, we still know very little about this aspect of Spore. This thread is not only for discussing what info we have, but to speculate and suggest features we would like to see. In that way, it is reminiscent of the "good 'ol days" of this forum, when we feverishly posted all our dreams on this board. Ironically, as we have gotten closer to the release date, our creative enthusiasm has seemed to wane... this is most unfortunate. Perhaps this thread will go some way to rectifying this.

Diplomacy is going to be in Spore, but to what degree? Will Wright has said that Spore is the distillation of the best aspects of several games. So, City Phase is not "SimCity Spore" but a simplified version of his city-building games. This makes me believe that diplomacy could be similarly simplified. At E3 '06, we saw the Diplo Interface for the first time. It was quite limited in options... although perhaps that is because it wasn't 'full diplomacy' with a neighboring power, but communication within your nation. Anyways...

I am most intrigued by the possibilities and uses of 'cultural vehicles'. It is my understanding that we interact with other civs or cities via vehicles, not necessarily (at least at first) with a simple double-click on their city or leader name. We have to send vehicles to interact. We know that peaceful, diplpomatic vehicles can and will be constructed in Spore. I'm not sure how they would be used, but it'll be very interesting.

Just thinking out loud...

Spore: General / Game on, with SPOREts?

We do know from the '05 GDC video that our creatures will be able to engage in procedural dancing... I was wondering, how about procedural sports?

PC Games / Is the Oblivion Collector's Edition worth it?
« on: June 22, 2006, 06:38:04 pm »
For only five dollars more, I can get a 'making of' DVD for Oblivion in their collector's edition. Which I think is cool, but does anyone else have it? Is the collectors edition worth the extra five dollars for?

Spore: General / Opinions on Sporepedia
« on: May 10, 2006, 09:53:25 pm »
So, what are all your thoughts on the Sporepedia?

I personally am dissapointed with it. It is far too much like a pack of trading cards (which is what Will said they were! :P) and not enough like an encyclopedia. I would have really liked a more 'book' like 'pedia, with a customizable entry, so you can write notes, etc. With an actual encyclopedia-type SP, I am more immersed in the world. I feel like I'm some sort of instellar biologist, traking down exotic creatures. I don't want to harken back to my Pokemon days.

To me, the whole trading card shape of the 'pedia seems a bit disjointed from the main game.

There are many ways why I would like to have a more encyclopedia-style Sporepedia, but it is late and I am tired... so I am not sure I would be able to articulate them clearly...

Spore: General / To See The Face of God...
« on: May 07, 2006, 06:14:43 pm »
Will Wright has said in the new 1UP video that by placing a monolith on a planet and occasionally doing 'miraculous' things (fireworks show, raining food or animals or somthing) for the tribal race there, that they can eventually establish a religion around you. While tht is all well an good while their still stuck on their home planet... what happens when they find out that the 'gods' they had been worshipping for 3000+ years are just another group of mortals? I see several potential outcomes:

1-Gratitude. They are really happy that you guided their species into sapience in the first place, and even happier that you helped lift their civilizations out of primitive ages. They see your interference as a primarily beneficial force. Even if your critters weren't gods, they were the next best thing in their opinion. (Automatic relations increase)

2-Anger. They feel utterly angery and betrayed that they were deluded into worshipping your creatures. They may have fought holy wars in your name, maybe they feel that the religion they instituted around your critters distracted them from the 'true faith', etc. So, they are kind of annoyed at what they percieve as the harmful things your interference has done on your society. (Automatic relations reduction, a declaration of war if they are an aggressive species)

3-More Worship. For some reason, they can't wrap their minds around the fact that  a Willosaur is not a god. They rationalize it all somehow, and they keep worshipping your guys. (Automatic relations increase).

See title. I wonder if erosion of mountains or continental drift will occur in the game.

Spore: General / Which Races Would You Want In Your Game?
« on: May 07, 2006, 11:03:54 am »
Pretty Simple. Pick 3 races made by folks on these forums in the Spore Creations section that you plan on downloadin into your game. For me, I thank I want:

1. Nauceans (HydromancerX)
2. Lermurians (Lambsquirter
3. Borarks (Bonemouse)

How about you?

Spore: General / Isolationism?
« on: May 06, 2006, 08:09:29 pm »
While I do plan on engaging in the diplomatic aspects of Spore quite a bit, I was wondering if there was perhaps an option to turn diplomacy 'off' temporarily?

For example, while in Space Stage, all I really want to do is gather creatures, build & observe the perfect zoo planet. However, I keep getting annoying messages from other Space Civs asking for this or that, or declarations of war, etc. So I declare my civ has entered 'isolation' and refuse to respond to any transmissions during that time. Obviously, you'd take a huge hit to good relations, but then you wouldn't be bothered for a while.

Spore: General / "Making of Spore" DVD/Book?
« on: May 06, 2006, 06:23:48 am »
Spore is a masterpiece. Even in its unfinished state, it carries itself with the grace and beauty of ancient statuary. Spore will be a major game in and of itself, and IMO, a major turning point in the history of gaming. I can see Spore inspiring and influencing the next generation of video gaming. As such...

Wouldn't it be cool if Maxis took some time out of their busy schedule and made a "Making of Spore" DVD or Book? I know that Lionhead made a (rather lengthy) book for Black&White, detailing the process of creation, and filled with production photos and final products. Additionally, they could do a DVD, but I hope it would be deeper then what they had for the Sims 2.

As a person who has been following Spore since early 2005... I feel that I have some sort of affinity towards 'Old School' Spore... That is, Spore as seen in the 2005 GDC video. Since we were given no more tantalizing visual hints for nearly a whole year, all of my fond wishes and psuedo-memories of Spore are in that 'mode'. I would love to have some sort of testement to all of the game's development for nostaligic purposes.

Spore will be a VERY popular game, and I am sure that there would be plenty of people who would want to get a "Making of" Book or DVD. I would love to see this... Anyone else?
