Spore: General / Will Wright quits Maxis to start the Stupid Fun Club
« on: April 08, 2009, 11:28:32 am »
Will Wright just posted this in the Sporum:

Hey everyone.

There's a little press release going out today as we speak (well actually I'm not speaking, I'm typing... (and I guess you're not even listening, you're reading (unless you're having your new Kindle read this to you in which case you are listening) but you're definitely not reading this "as" the press release is going out, and I'm certainly typing this hours before the fact....) anyway. (I suck at writing)

The gist of the story is that I'm leaving EA (well, not really, I'll explain) to start (well, not quite start, it's actually been around for quite a while in a rather different form) ... let's say dive into a new venture, The Stupid Fun Club. The Stupid Fun was actually started many years ago by myself and my friend Mike Winter, we met while competing in Robot Wars and Battlebots. It was apparent to us that one day the robots would take over the world and we decided we wanted to be on the winning side, so our initial charter was to do whatever we could to usher in our new mechanical overlords.

Along the way we ending up building and prototyping a lot of... odd stuff. People would come by our shop and get interested in this stuff for various reasons. Some of this stuff sparked new creative ideas, even (*gasp*) ideas that may have "commercial, entertainment value" (this is how you talk when you've been around lawyers and MBA's too long).

At some point we started showing some of this stuff to the people at EA. They got excited by the prospect of us pursuing these projects commercially (or that's what they said anyway, I think they just want to be on the winning side of the coming robotic revolution as well). So we started talking to them (EA, not the robots, though we do talk to them as well, but the robot responses are cryptic at best) about getting involved and investing in The Stupid Fun Club (we asked the robots first but they're all broke).

So as things worked out I decided to jump into my work at the club more or less full time. But at The Stupid Club we'll be working on new games (along with EA) as well as other kinds of projects with different partners.

I can't talk about specific projects coming out of SFC just yet (alas, the robots won't let me), but as things develop I'll find a way to keep those of you who are interested informed about what we're doing (but not with a blog...I'll never have a blog). A major aspect of the projects I've worked on has always been the player community, that won't change.

Update: here's the site of the new studio:

Spore: General / Special Occasion!

I hope there's not a problem about making a topic for this... but I got to my thousandth creation, and made a special statue to celebrate:

I usually don't beg for ratings, but help me get it among the Most Popular New, it would mean a lot to me!

Spore: General / A second patch?
« on: October 16, 2008, 01:13:39 pm »
Just logged in, an the dialog box popped up saying a new update was available. And I have the first patch installed...

It's downloading now, but I'm curious... It says to check for details, but I haven't found anything in the site. Is it a bug, and I'm downloading the same patch again? Anyone else is getting this?

Edit: just found the news. They must have put it online just now. Link is

Spore: General / Planet Sculpting
« on: September 13, 2008, 10:29:32 am »
So, anyone else spending their time sculpting planets? Once you get used to the endless waiting for tools to recharge and the frustrating imprevisibility of most of them, you can make awesome planets in 1 hour.

And then you go to orbit, and the planet pretty much resets. Seriously, it goes back to looking like a ball of crushed paper, and you can barely discern any of the changes you so carefully made. So, what's the point in having all those tools? This sucks.

Procedural generation is cool and everything, but I wish planet sculpting was more like in Sim City 4.

So, ranting apart, have you guys managed to produce any cool results? I wanna see some screenshots, bring them on!

Spore: General / Questions for people who have the game (SPOILERS, I guess)
« on: September 04, 2008, 06:48:29 am »
Hi folks! There are a few questions that are eating me, and I wish someone could answer... I love designing species, and I'm sure I'll love even more making buildings and vehicles, but I worry about a few things:

1- When we start a new game, can we choose a sporecast to populate the planet? 'Cause I make different types of creatures, and I wish my dinosaur/insect hybrids - for instance - to populate the same world, since they're related.

2- How about the cities "ground" pattern and walls style? Can we choose those? I've seen a lot of cities where the style of the buildings don't match the ground or walls.

Spore: General / SporeTips Blog
« on: August 13, 2008, 06:45:31 pm »
Hello, guys! I just started a blog about Spore, to share tips and show good content I find around the Sporepedia. I would be happy if you checked it out:

So far I've only posted about myself, but I wish to feature other people's profiles, creations and tips. I'd like to feature in the "Check Out" section the profiles of AhavoRaboTaco, Jaleho and Pietoro (3 of my favorite creators), so if you guys are interested, just describe in a few words the guidelines or influences that go into your creatures. If you're in, I'll even keep a SPORE widget permanently in the sidebar of the blog, wich could be great advertising for your creatures.

Anyone else interested in being featured, can ask me here. I'll prioritize the ones I think are best, but please don't be offended by my personal tastes.

I'd also love if people sent me links for creatures they made with good creatortips, to go in the "Creator Tip" section.

I'm also open to suggestions... What you guys think would be cool to have in the blog?

Spore: General / Ratings Blackmail
« on: July 21, 2008, 03:07:23 pm »
Just received a comment from user cmb2kool ( saying:

"if you give positive feeback on my helicopter 2 i will give ten of your guys positive feeback"

I won't accept that commend, nor I will respond saying what I think of his stratagem, because I feel threatened that he'll downrate all my creatures. But now I feel like personally downrating all of his creatures that I don't like.

What do you guys think of this kind of thing? If any of you receive a proposition of this kind, post the link to the user's page and I'll help downrate they until they learn!  >:(

Spore: General / New sporepedia functions available?
« on: July 07, 2008, 04:29:50 pm »
Hey! I've received one of those Spore newsletters. It said:

"Visite para criar seu avatar pessoal (Spovatar!) e sua página de perfil de usuário para acompanhar suas estatísticas pessoais, amigos, realizações, prêmios, criações, Sporecasts e mais!"

that's portuguese, wich roughly translates as:
"Visit to create your personal avatar (Spovatar!) and your user profile page to keep up with your personals statistics, friends, realizations, prizes, creations, Sporecasts and more!"

But I see no change on the site, nor in my profile? What do you guys think?

Personally, I wouldn't mind if someone else edited a little bit one of my creatures, IF that person followed a few rules:
- On the creature's description, says that it is a version of another creature, with the name of the original and the creator;
- Leaves a comment on the original crature, saying that he's goin to or made a new version.

I think these couple of rules should be widelly adopted. What do you guys think?
