PC Games / Star Conflict

http://star-conflict.com/

Star conflicts a free to play space fighter game (also available on steam) and its one of the best I have ever played, its in open beta right now.

Its arena based, with a variety of modes, my favorite being regular where you get three ships with 1 life each, you win by taking all enemy beacons or destroying all their ships.

The game play is real time, you control your ship, its not point in click, its got a neat progression system and is very tactical. Its a bit like world of tanks in space. A big difference is the different tiers of ships are separate from each other. If you have a tier 2 ship in your roster, your matched in tier two games so its always balanced. I like it it a lot, thought i'd show it to you guys.

Storytelling and Roleplaying / Xigerath
« on: November 15, 2012, 06:24:28 am »
I've talked about this every now and then, and recently talked to a couple people in IRC about it. But i'm creating a table top RPG, and was hoping to tap in to the many talents the members here have to offer if they would so choose. Its code named Xigerath, the name is subject to change. I am well aware that the game itself is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. But even if its not a style of game you would personally play, your input is still valued. And I need all the help I can get. Even if your not an RPG player, you can still help with lore ideas!

The goals of the game.

Allows players to create any kind of character they want to play without being restricted to a set of coded features.
Tactical, fun and in depth combat without being overly complicated.
Encourages role playing and improvising on behalf of the players.
Makes running the game painless for GMs with a suite of tools.

I've been working off and  on Xigerath for years, A ton of work is done on it and I will gladly show you guys when I..uh...make it less ugly?

Ill start by asking the same question I asked Sam and Neo in IRC, and on /rpg

What should a new RPG do to make martial characters interesting and fun to play as opposed to magic users?

PC Games / Battle Swarm field of honor.

http://www.battleswarm.net/game/

Battleswarm is a free FPS that just came out, unfortunately it is not too popular at the moment mostly because its completely unknown, the company are working on an advertisng campaign now.

Anyway its an FPS/RTS hybrid, one team plays the bugs controlling a swarm of units RTS style vs the humans who are playing soldiers in third person shooter style.

Its really unique and a blast to play, though difficult at times to find a game.

Storytelling and Roleplaying / Lets play UFO AfterMath Story Thread

Prologue

On May 25, 2004, A giant spacecraft approached the earth. Silent, it hovered ominously over the world and began and to release great clouds of spores into the upper atmosphere. Rapidly multiplying, the spores soon darkened the skies, and before long obsured the sun completely. In later days, this period would be known as the *Twilight*.

The Spores, having reached critical mass in the skies, began to rain down. Over the course of several days, they began to clog streets and bodies of water, smothering people in their homes and burying animals in the wild. During the *Nightfall* as it came to be called, most of the higher lifeforms on earth were wiped out.

During the Twilight, all human responses were futile. Choosing caution over aggression, the governments of the world didn't realize how quickly the end could come, and were buried alongside those that they governed. A few, however, did survive, sealed in underground bases with stocks of food and oxygen. After several weeks, the spores seemed to have disintegrated , Decomposing and settling in to the soil. The world seemed safe again, for a time. Many of the surviving humans banded together and named themselves the Council Of Earth

Rushing down a flight of stone cold steel steps two men were hurrying barely stopping to breathe. One was middle age with brown graying hair, The other was short with glass's and brown curly hair.

The adviser attempting to adjust his glasses nearly dropped them in the commotion.

Adviser: Congratulations on receiving the title of commander sir.

Wolf: Thank you, I just didn't expect to be thrown in so quickly.

Adviser: I  apologize for giving such short notice but the situation is getting more dire by the second, People are getting scared and resources low, UFOS have been spotted more frequently and we have reports of some sort of monsters roaming the streets. I must brief you immediately.

Wolf: You have no need to apologize, I understand completely

After cutting many sharp corners and darting through a long hallway the two men arrive in large room filled with many computers, in the center of the room lies a machine with many diffrent buttons and gizmos, Connected to it is a large screen that appears to have an image of the earth upon it.

Adviser: Some of the satellites in space are still online, We have here a satellite image of our planet and we have set up some interface options as well as a tactical map

Wolf: Excellent

Wolf seemed somewhat intrigued by seeing an image of earth again, After the Spores decomposed nobody really expected to see earth in its former self. You could see  Wolfs mouth twitch slightly, As though he nearly almost cracked a smile of relief.

Moving to the machine the adviser messed with a few buttons and zoomed the image in.

Adviser: We have set up a rough estimate of where we have the biggest influence indicated by the blue area, Inside this influence we predict being able to easily transport supplies during missions and its very likely that the people not currently with our cause could rise up to aid us since we are able to provide aid, food, and shelter in the area.

Adviser: the icons you see here represent our bases, the target represents military bases, Its where we will launch our squads from as well as where our aircraft and weapons are stored, the Cog represents an engineering facility, That is where development of equipment and technology take place. The Nuclear symbol represents our research facility where our scientists come up with solutions and technology to further our cause,

Wolf: I see..we do not currently have a research base.

Advisor: Unfortunately no we do not, If i may suggest that acquiring one be a high priority. Each base only really has enough room for the equipment and staff suited to one type, Therefore we can move equipment in and out if you would like to switch one base to another type, we could. However each base can only provide one function at a time.

Wolf: I understand, we will have to make due with what we have for the time being.

Adviser:The Council Of Earth has entrusted you with making the majority of the decisions for our conflict. They have also agreed that they will attempt to send you the most qualified soldiers for your Phoenix squad. It is at your discretion what missions you wish them to engage, The Council Of Earth will attempt any outstanding missions that your squad does not take.

With a few more button presses the adviser brought up an image of three soldiers, two male and one female.

Adviser: These three are the first set of soldiers The Council Of Earth has deemed acceptable for your squad.

Wolf: They do not look like they are the most qualified.

Adviser: Understand that the pool of people willing to fight is quite low, These soldiers scored higher on their combat tests then the majority of those tested.

Wolf began to look over the soldiers profiles wondering to himself if they were really combat ready.

Wolf Began reading aloud each soldiers report written by the Councils examiners.

Wolf: Malcolm Badger Man McLean, Scored high in the hand gun operation test and first aid training, Due to his age he was unable to carry heavy loads and his eyes are not the best, Its also possible that his bones may be brittle due to his age. However he showed great leadership quality's, Used to serve in the navy, Interesting

Wolf: Brian Grazony Rowley, Scored high in launcher and sniper tests, He failed first aid testing, They report that Grazony would have trouble applying a band aid. He displayed a large amount of physical strength able to carry a large load and handle a rocket launcher with relative ease, He also seems to be quite resistant to pain, Grazony displays a very caring demeanor and constantly volunteered his assistance in his stay at our facility.

Wolf: Florence Serenity Plant,  Scored average in most tests however displayed a great amount dexterity and awareness, It is unlikely that she would ever be caught off guard, She is not physically strong and is doubtful that she has a very high pain tolerance. She is French but speaks English, She has a demeanor not suited to that of soldier.

Wolf: What the heck does that mean?...

Adviser: Would you like to meet your squad? They are waiting for you in the armory.

Wolf: Of course i will go to greet them immediately.

On his way to the armory Wolf could not shake an errie feeling, He was going to go meet his squad, People he would be sending on missions that they might not return from, People that likely don't even belong here, How many soldiers would he lose?, For a moment he had second thoughts about meeting them, He thought that losing a blank face would be easier then losing someone he would be acquainted to. He shook it off and kept walking.

When he arrived in the armory his squad was standing in line waiting for him, they all three immediately threw their hands up to salute him. He noticed that Badger mans was uniform was perfectly clean and situated, His boots were polished to a mirror shine and he stood up straight,

Grazonys uniform on the other hand was wrinkled and his shirt was only half tucked in, He had mud on his boots and some sort of stain on his pants, He slightly slouched.

He noticed that Serenity had make up and earrings on and he could faintly smell perfume, He wondered how the hell she found such stuff rather then why she was wearing it.

Wolf: Now now, put your hands down, there is no need for those sort of formalities around here

All three: YES SIR

Wolf first approached Badger man and extended his hand,

Wolf: Thank you for your service Badger Man.

Badger Man shook Wolfs hand in an almost professional manner.

Badger Man: It is an honor to server under you sir

Wolf then extended his hand to Grazony,

Wolf: Grazony, Thank you for you joining Phoenix Company

Grazony shook wolfs hand quite fast, Shaking it up and down,

Grazony: Yer welcome Sarge, Nice to meet cha

Wolf: Sarge? I'm not a..never mind

And finally he extended his hand to Serenity

Wolf: Thank you for joining Phoenix squad

When Serenity softly shook wolfs hand, he noticed her nails were painted,

Serenity: zit iz no problem zir, zit will be an honor to zerve under you

Wolf stepped back facing the group and all of sudden looked stern.

Wolf: You all are here because the council felt you were the most qualified to join Phoenix Company, Phoenix Company is supposed to consist of the best of the best, you will undertake the most difficult and dangerous missions, The chance of death is high and some of you may die in my service, After hearing that do you still wish to remain under my command!

All Three: YES SIR

Wolf was slightly taken aback, He thought for sure that his speech would shake them, that perhaps the council made a mistake, But Wolf realized, no matter who they are or why they are here. They are willing to fight to the death if need be. Wolf felt suddenly guilty for having second thoughts about his squad but he didn't let it show.

Wolf: Our armory is fairly empty but we did secure a small batch of firearms, Grenades, Medikits and even some Body armor, Go pick your load outs and return to your quarters and rest up, You have a terminal in your quarters that you may use to write what ever you wish, The egg heads think it would be best for your mental well being if you typed out your thoughts in your spare time. Now move out!

All three: YES SIR.

Wolf returned to his own quarters thinking about the day, He thought about what he had told his squad about keeping a diary, He glanced over at his terminal, he thought it was silly but he had nothing better to do, There was no way he could sleep right now.

Welcome Commander

Commander Wolf Private logs

Today the council recognized my ability and past experience of being in command and have made me commander of most of the operation. The Council controls its own squads and votes on things but in the end the final decision on missions or otherwise lies with me. With in 15 minutes of being inaugurated i was rushed down to the control room for a briefing and then i met the first three members of Phoenix squad

At first glance i thought for sure sending them on any mission would guarantee them coming back in body bags, But they displayed a lot of heart, I may be able to make them in to real soldiers yet. Badger Man seems the most mature, Its very possible that i will make him squad leader for the time being.

There is something odd about Grazony, But you can see in his eyes that he means the best..i just hope he doesn't shoot a hole in his foot or something.

Serenity on the other hand looked like she just came from a beauty parlor, Where did she manage to get all of those beauty products?, Even more concerning is why did she bother putting them on? I think i am starting to understand what her report meant.

For now i guess its time for me to try and get some rest. Hopefully i can get some sleep.

I can't believe there is no topic for this yet.

Anyway for those that don't know (you have been under a rock). 10$ a month lets you play any game they have on their website. And they have some great stuff From old arcade games to newer games like Bioshock. With times being rough it is a great a deal.

But that's not the main reason i made this topic, Gametap also offers free games that they rotate in out. They are free to play as long as they remain in the free section. And at this moment they have some great jewels in the free section.

I can personally vouch that many of the games in the free section are fantastic games. I am personally playing Jagged edge 2, and Sacrifice at the moment.

I diden't know where to post to this. The election thread or news for your blues or whatever..so i decided to give it its own topic. The barbed wire fence thing has one as did the boy that threw lizards to crocs at the zoo so i thought it fitted.

This is not a thread to discuss your political views or debate them we have a thread about that already.

Anyway this is is horrible.

I know people were afraid of wearing McCain T shirts and what not ..but i guess that fear was not completely unfounded  :(.

Spore: General / NEW spore patch. Start up your game to get it.
« on: September 18, 2008, 12:19:11 pm »
Quote
Spore Patch

The focus of this patch is to fix some bugs that have been reported and to respond to feedback we've been seeing from the community about tuning and stability. We managed to squeak in a few fun things too; there's a cool cheat that allows you to turn your creature into a blocky representation of themselves, a new "inspection" feature for the creature creator to browse the parts stats that you have applied to your creature, and the much-requested "evoadvantage" cheat - you'll now be able to start a new creature game with a more evolved creature of your choice!

To get the patch, launch the EA Download Manager to download and install it. If you didn't install the EADM when you installed Spore, you can get it from http://files.ea.com/downloads/eacore/eadm-installer.exe.

This is a PC only patch. Mac users should check back soon!
Features

* New Cheat: "evoadvantage". Enter this cheat when are starting a new Creature game to choose any creature from the Sporepedia. Start a new game with one of your more evolved creatures!
* Display part statistics when you are in Build mode. Rollover any part and hold down the 'i' key.
* New Cheat: "blocksmode". Turns creatures into their blocky representations.
* More style filters. Open the cheat window and type: "stylefilter -microscope" or "stylefilter -norainbows" or "stylefilter -nextgen" to see the new styles
* Added 70 new planet scripts with a low terraform score, especially of the "hot and high atmosphere" type

Graphics/Aesthetics

* Animation improvements
* Improved the planets fogging, blooming and lighting
* Fixed animation issues with tool handling, hand walking and some of the more oddly shaped creatures

Tuning

* Creature phase: Improved the pacing towards the end of the game, and increased the challenge in Normal and Hard modes.
* Tribe phase: Increased the challenge in Normal and Hard difficulty modes.
* Civilization phase: Increased the challenge in Normal and Hard difficulty modes.
* Space phase: Made Empires in Easy and Normal modes demand reasonable amounts of money in exchange for peace and adjust the level of punishment if the player doesn't pay
* Space phase: Made disasters less likely to occur in Easy and Normal modes and increased the time between each attack from the enemy empire when the player is at war.

Miscellaneous

* Creature phase: Improved the way posse members behave during threatening situations and fights.
* Space phase: Made finding your home world and colonies easier in the Galactic view.
* Tribe phase: Made it so that tribe members can travel on steep hills if they need to do so now, but their speed will be reduced a lot.
* Fixed an issue with attacks not working on some bigger animals and larger animals not dying correctly
* Fixed collect mission not completing correctly when all parts have been collected
* Fixed problems with the "Rolling Thunder" and "Déj Vu" achievements not being awarded as they should
* Fixed floating parts not being deducted from the budget when loaded into creator
* Fixed an issue with the rotation rings not resizing correctly when a part was resized and improved their look
* Fixed an issue where the terraforming score of planet could differ when revisiting a solar system
* Fixed the keyboard controls for zoom & pitch in the Colony Planner not working properly
* Fixed a crash that could occur when watching an epic creature attack a city
* Fixed some issues where the game would freeze when using the Creature Tweaker tool or when capturing a planet in solar view
* Fixed an issue where not all tribe members would obey the raid order when a large group was ordered to raid
* Fixed an issue where banning a creation from one of your other saved games would black out the main menu

Sounds fantastic!. Except they did what i feared...

They messed with the space stage so that it now affects everyone. I play on normal so now i get screwed because my universe was never *broken* once...i knew that was going to happen.

Anyway most of it IMO is fantastic. Thank you Maxis Thank you!.

Spore: General / The Valid Suggestion Thread For Maxis
« on: September 18, 2008, 08:42:21 am »
For the most part the huge wave of negativity seems to of subsided and most people seem to be enjoying spore. I wanted to make a valid suggestion thread for the Maxis team to read, Its better then everyone spamming them with PMs, Emails, And bugging Lucky whenever she enters a thread.  ;D.

The unofficial rules for this thread is as follows.

1: No complaints or whining that Spore does not have a feature.

2: Do not suggest bug fixes as there are already places to do that.

3: Only make valid suggestions that could be realistically implemented in the current iteration of Spore as a patch, update, or expansion.

Ill Start, They are in no particular order of what i would like to see most.

1:Creatures acting more like creatures in the creature stage:
I would like to see the creatures behave more like animals. Like foraging food and hunting or roaming and grazing in herds. Some should be in packs herds or flocks and some should be solitary. I am Aware that they do act like this sometimes.

2:Thirst Meter: I would like to see a thirst meter implemented so your creature would have to drink water. Whats more i would like both the hunger meter and a thirst meter applied to all CPU controlled creatures in the creature stage but at a decreased rate.

3:Claw attack for some feet: I would like to see a few feet parts support a claw attack like a lion or bear would do.

4:Other players Cells: I would like to see other players cell appear in the cell stage.

5:CPU consequence powers: On the Normal and Hard difficulty's i would like to see the CPU tribes and and Civs use the consequence powers excluding the take over all city's powers.

6: Auto defenses or Friendly AI controlled space craft for planets and colenys: While you can already take a fleet in to battle on the offense it would be nice to have friendly space craft to protect your planets like your allies and enemy's do.

You have already done a great job Maxis i am in love with the game  ;D.

I have been playing offline since Sunday (many of you helped me remember?). My internet was supposed to be connected the 23rd but i got a phone call today telling me it my service was ready  and all i had to do was hook it up (YIPPE) So here i am.

Anyways i can't figure out how to check your creations online statistic like how many encountered them how many times they became extinct etc. Was that feature removed or am i missing it?.

Spore: General / Gormans Impressions snd suggestions of Spore
« on: September 13, 2008, 09:51:36 am »
i'm back for a few hours. I'm on a laptop in a marketplace currently and i thought i would share my thoughts on the game. And offer a few suggestions to Maxis if they should read it. Note that i play on the NORMAL difficulty setting.

Cell Stage:

Its simple but fun and i really like the whole time line consequence feature. Theres not much i can say about cell since it is so simple. Its put together well and works the way it should. I have encountered a problem however. Every time i play the cell stage i never get see any cells except the same ones by maxis. Even though i have many of my own my girlfriends and some i pulled off the sporepedia.

Suggestions: If that last line is a bug it needs fixed. If its supposed to be that way then it needs changed.

Creature Stage:

My favorite stage its almost what i expected with a few flaws. Its very fun to explore and get the parts you need to build your creature.
And i personally find it even more fun when i pick a creature personality in my mind and play it out. For example i always only eat when i am hungry i have played as a carnivore that only eats eggs. Solitary predators, Skittish pack herbivores. To me its more fun that way, i also find it more fun to shut off the mini map in that stage.

Suggestions. I love it when i see a group of creatures roaming and hunting, Drinking water and fighting others etc. The thing is its rare. I think creatures need to do this more they need to act more animal like as opposed to mobs waiting to be attacked or socialized. I think there needs to be some parts that let a non biped swipe with their front paws like a lion does. And the random meteor shower and UFO showing up aren't so random. They happen every game. This needs to be changed as well as more events added.

Tribal: My least favorite stage due to the fact in my game theres no competition. The tribes rarely gather food or replenish their lost tribe members. It may be a bug in my game and it needs to be addressed. Its way way to easy to socialize. On easy its understandable but not above that. And the other tribe ought to have the consequence ability's. The other tribes should also be able to socialize with your tribe to steal members away. At the moment the only thing they can do against the player is attack.

Suggestions look up :).

Civ stage. Civ stage is fun but horribly unbalanced. The CPU civs NEED to have the consequence ability's in this stage. Outside of the ones that take over all citys instantly. The economic CPU cannot beat the player period.  If they initiate trade with you you can buy out THIER citys??? That needs to be fixed. Whats more without the consequence ability the Economic CPUS can not defend themselves from any other civ be it player or CPU. The civ stage seriously needs fixing. But it some how remains fun through it all.

Suggestions: All the above and ...why does every epic from civ onward automatically have the ability to spit fireballs?.

Space: My second favorite phase and here comes an unpopular opinion. I have taken at least 5 races to the space stage. I have not encountered this relentless aggressiveness that everyone whines about. I play each of those races differently too. I have had war declared on me one time and only one time. Any other time was my doing. If you play carelessly jumping from star to star without a care in the world then yeah you might get overwhelmed. If you play carefully introduce yourself when contacted (even if ships are shooting you in space) and use your seti device to figure out where you should and should not go you wont have this problem.

In my opinion its not a *bug* that everyone claims should be fixed. Its fine the way it is and its the people causing their own problems.
Begging maxis to fix it will mess up the balance of the space stage and possibly make it too easy. Maxis listens to the fans so please be careful what you wish for.

Suggestions: I think their should be way to see in the sporepedia what plants and animals are on what planets when you look at the planet cards once you have scanned them.

Overall Spore matched my expectations and i cant wait to see all the stuff Maxis adds to it. I would give it a 9.0 out of 10.
