Spore: Creation Corner / New creature: Manthas
« on: January 05, 2007, 03:48:33 pm »
Added these to spore wiki before here:

BACKGROUND: Manthas are one of the two sentient species found in the bisolar system, Yanta. Both of these species coexist on the third planet in the system, Yanta 3.

BIOLOGY: Manthas evolved from shark-like amphibians called Manjas, where they evolved a unique feature: A head similar to Earth's hammerheads. Their hammer-like skulls contained, in addition to the usuals (Such as the brain), adjustable binocular vision, so the could see prey far off and also right in front them, and electroreceptive organs, like a shark, to "hear" the heartbeats of prey and accurately locate them in complete darkness. Their bodies and limbs are similar to those of frogs, just bipedal. They have sharp serrated teeth in front for cutting meat and flat, dull teeth in the back for crushing the shells of crustaceans and chewing berries. Gills are located on the side of the neck. The upper gills are not true gills, as they contain olfactory organs inside, letting them smell both prey and fruit from quite a distance away. The lower gills are true gills, and allow manthas to breath above and on land. Manthas can absorb humidity from the air and water, making drinking unnecessary. They have two stomachs: One for breaking down soft, easily digestible berries and meat; and the other filled with strong acids, for breaking down what's left, which is usualy bones and shell bits. They can slightly change their color by diverting blood flow, allowing them to change from their normal green to turqoise and sometimes brown. They also give live birth.

HABITAT: Manthas are most commonly found in bays, marshes, swamps, and any tropical form of wetlands. They prefer these specific habitats because of the heat and humidity, which are required to keep them from getting a disease known as "Scrangen" which rots their sensitive skin and infects their gills. Burrows are made in reed patches, which offer protection and hide the burrow. In the winter, manthas burrow farther down and make a system of tunnels and miniature caves in the mud, in which they hibernate and store food. In beaches and coves, they take shelter in nearby underwater caverns, where they can burrow into the sandstone or the mud.

UPDATE:
Added two pictures of heads for tribal and creature phase:

CULTURE:
Manthas have a culture similar to that of Earth's Ancient Egyptians, just WAY more advanced. They make "temples" in the shape of large fins, which usually contain libraries, museums, and schools. They value knowledge and are generally benevolent, but get offended easily. When a Mantha dies, its fellows bury it with a possession symbolizing his/her occupation, and are buried with an iron-bark algae seed implanted in the torso. These seeds signify their beleif in life after death, since the seed grows on the nutrition provided by the dead corpse. Mummified fish, sharks, and amphibians are buried along with the mantha, which are supposed to provide food, help, and a guide in the Afterlife.

TECHNOlOGY:
The manthas don't need very many advanced tools, since they can do most things with their brains that "normal" beings (humans, etc.) can't, like telling the approximate time, with the help of specialy evolved electroreceptive organs. They also have small, elongated pod shaped spaceships that can emit small amounts of electromagnetic waves to temporarily disable turrets or engines on enemy ships, leaving time for the manthas to retaliate or flee.
