It's hard to look at the back of the box in my local CompUSA when there are no boxes nor CompUSAs.
Also Joystiq stopped existing years ago and that was the only games blog site I regularly followed (and this one, of course).

I keep hearing things about games I have no idea what they are.
What are the good games?
Any genre, style, online, offline, browser, download etc...

Everything Else / New Year's Resolutions 2018
« on: December 28, 2017, 09:30:54 am »
Anyone have any goals for 2018?
Things they want to do or things they want to stop doing?
Or some other third category?
Please share!

I'm hoping to make it a year where I buckle down to write, send out, and get some stories published.

Art / Group Dumb Comic Chain
« on: December 23, 2017, 11:44:36 pm »
Current chain (Started Dec 24th, 2017): 27 Comics
High score: 27 Comics

The premise of this thread is this:

Every day, at least one person posts a comic here.
Someone. Anyone. Maybe it is the same person. Maybe it is different people. Maybe the comics are connected. Maybe they aren't.
Maybe multiple people post in the same day.
They can be amazing high-effort comics or nonsense scribble comics of any genre.

We just try to go as long as we can without having a day where no one posts a comic.
And if we miss a day, we mark the high score and start again.

Not doing this is also an option, but I thought it might be fun!
Comments are also welcome!

I haven't been drawing regularly in an embarrassingly long time.
I'm still dealing with some personal stuff, and I don't think I have the energy to do a good drawing, or even an adequate one, but I at least want to get back into the mechanics of drawing regularly.
I miss doing the thing.
I miss it a lot.

Anyone who wants to join, no expectations, except to do bad.
Do a bad line.
Do a bad scribble, even.
Or a masterpiece of badness.
Either way.
Just draw a little each day and we'll share.

Everything Else / Has Google been getting worse as a search engine?
« on: November 05, 2017, 10:35:29 pm »
On what is probably a completely unrelated note to everything else going on right now, this is going to sound weird, but has Google been getting steadily worse as a search engine over the last few years?

The results seem less and less relevant to what I'm actually trying to find, and more and more spammy.
Also I have to really wrangle it into searching for what I actually want it to search for. (Put individual words in quotes, hit verbatim, do a whole bunch of other stuff).

When I go to Google News and click 'read more' on a story cluster, it brings me to a nicely laid out page, but it doesn't actually show me stories in the cluster I just clicked on?

It's like the bones and connective tissues of the internet are getting sleeker but less functional/useful/informative/illuminating/educational?
Like the edges of the whole experience are being sanded off and heavily processed, and harder to actually steer or navigate in an exploratory sense?
Like it's harder to use it to discover cool internet things that aren't already deeply meme-ified and mediated?
I don't know how to put it properly. I'm feeling a similar vibe with certain parts of Wikipedia now compared to Wikipedia a few years back?

Has anyone else noticed this? The question's not just limited to Google.

Pat, you care deeply about this community and the people in it and I do respect that and care about you in turn.

Krakow you are always a welcome presence and funny and good at jokes and also quite good overall.

Ink sometimes I think you are the only person here tethered to reality and I mean that in a good way.

Martyk is still the forum's bartender. That is an important job.

I have more things to say but we'll start here.

Reach for deepest corners.
Rummage the crawling void.
Catalog the cosmic horrors
And tell me what you enjoyed.

The internet is jokes today.
Which ones have you seen?
I'm too lazy to finish this rhyme.
2017.

No but for real, what are people doing today?
I know Reddit has discovered the 2005 magic of Drawball and I haven't really looked anywhere else.

PC Games / GBJAM

I'm spinning this off into its own thread because it seems appropriate.
There's apparently been a gameboy-style game making competition recently and like 400 games came out of it, and many are free.

Article here.

Competition website here.
This is one of them:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAfucrbZ7OA" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAfucrbZ7OA</a>

This is another one of them:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDBy_TCvRuo" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDBy_TCvRuo</a>

Here is another, but the let's play is in German, but that's okay:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LefEBL5Bs7I" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LefEBL5Bs7I</a>

There are many of them and I don't have time to play all of them. Someone please find the good ones and tell me what they are. This whole thing amazes me.

EDIT: There's no YouTube videos for them, but Slugcaster: https://supernaught.itch.io/slugcaster and EXIT: https://nukespoon.itch.io/exit look amazing. You can apparently play EXIT in browser.

TV / What should I watch on Netflix?
« on: July 15, 2016, 10:06:40 pm »
Hey.

You know what we need.
This thread.
Right here.
Because half the time I have no idea what to watch on Netflix.

(While this may be in the TV section, movies suggestions are also acceptable.)

I recently finished Samurai Flamenco, which was good.
I'm in the middle of Freaks and Geeks, which is fantastic.

I also just watched the Mel Brooks version of To Be or Not To Be. You should please do the same.

I want laffs.
Where go to get?
As in previous years, please log various prankings and joke makings from around the internet in this thread.

For one:
Plagiarism accusations abound on /r/comics.

Everything Else / What is the new Social Media thing we should all be on?
« on: October 18, 2015, 10:34:14 pm »
Web 2.0.3.5 is here everyone, and we can't pretend it away anymore.
We sorely need a dedicated social media thread.

Tinder, Vine, Instagram, Snapchat, Periscope, whatever else there is. There's at least seven, right?
I keep missing out on these things until everyone else already knows about them.

(And some of the ones that I did know apparently stopped existing more than a year ago.
Remember Turntable.fm? You took turns playing music for other people in chat rooms? It died in 2014.)

We need to pool our collective heads to keep track of what everyone else is into these days so we can make fun of it better understand it.

What interesting social media stuff is out there worth discussing?

How do we not have a thread for this show?

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5A5Mb__fiA" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5A5Mb__fiA</a>

Also, did anyone watch the season 2 premiere last night?

Everything Else / April Fools Day Watchdome 2015
« on: March 31, 2015, 09:08:57 pm »
You know the deal.
You know how the things go.

April Fool's day high jinks on the internet. You find em, I wanna see em.
Please.
I missed too many last year and my mirth levels were at a general minimum.
Bring on the frivolity!

To make a very long, sad, and uncomfortable story short, my uncle passed away about a year ago, unexpectedly.
As my family was cleaning out his home, we found an unopened Wii that we ended up taking with us.

It's kind of sat unused for a while, due to a number of issues with free time, but I'm looking to start getting games for it, and I've realized I have almost no idea where to begin. The most recent consoles I owned before this are a Gamecube I've had since I was 11 and an Xbox I've had since I was 13. Because of this, I barely followed the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii generation of console gaming at all.

So I'm looking to you all for suggestions. Any Wii games I should absolutely go out of my way to get? Open to all genres.

It's that time again! That time where we draw things. A lot of things. So many things.

I figured we'd use the same rules as last time, unless anyone wants to try anything different:
(and I am totally open to trying things different. Let me know!)

Welcome to the very first 'One Drawing A Day' Challenge.

What we want out of you is just one drawing each day for one month.

Post whatever you can come up with. That's your doodles, paintings, sketches. Whether you're using a mouse in paint, a pen tablet with photoshop, or a pencil-paper-scanner scheme. It's all good.

Pretty much the only rule is that your drawing has to have been created recently for the challenge itself. So no old stuff.

ADDENDUM: It'd be a good idea not to go nuts with the file size either. If you can't make it much smaller or sacrifice some of the image quality, post a thumbnail and link somewhere offsite for the full image.

In one month (thirty days after the challenge begins) we will count up everyone's stuff.
Those who have completed the challenge will receive a badge they can show off in their signature.

This is for practice and experience too. That's invaluable, and it goes a long way.
Experiment, challenge yourself to draw something out of your league, entertain the forum with your artistic wit.

Try not to fall too far behind. If you think you'll have problems keeping up, just try to give yourself five minutes out of the day to draw something, anything.
You may be allowed to catch up if you miss a day or two, but don't disappear for too long.

Please try to enter by at least the first week. Those that do join in a little late should post several drawings to catch yourself up to everyone else, one for each day you missed.

We aim to keep the challenges rolling. When this one ends, the next one starts up.
We might have a theme in one of the later months, possibly. We'll see how it all goes.

No sign-up necessary. Start whenever you're ready.
So get cracking, people!

EDIT: Credits to Flisch for the idea, conferring with GD and myself to come up with a solid method of bringing it to you guys.
I'm just the topic creator guy.  :-*

Officially, unless there are any objections we'll start tomorrow (June 30th) and go for roughly 30 days (July 29th). And don't worry if you start late. You can join whenever you want.

I LOOK FORWARD TO DOING MORE OF THIS.
