Everything Else / My sleezy ISP

EDIT #2: The reason that this sucks is that I have a cable modem

My ISP is a jerk.  See why below.  I'm just glad that Verison is wiring my town for Fiber Optic and that it will be ready soon.  I think that this is also a lesson for everyone who thinks that they have a good internet connection to double check the crap that their ISP may be feeding them about what they're paying for.

I just noticed this, and I am appalled.  On the phone when I called Adelphia (my ISP) Customer Support (after they failed to answer my emails for weeks) the representative told me that we were getting 1-6 "megs".  I don't know about you, but when I hear "megs" I think "megabytes".  This is universally accepted, right??  I think that they didn't want to answer my emails because they may be giving us 1-6 "megs", but not in bytes.  They're giving us 1-6 megabits.  Since 1 byte = 8 bits, what we're really getting is up to 750 kilobytes per second, and down to 125 kilobytes per second.  The modem also periodically crashes inconsistantly every 2-4 hours (3-5 on a good day). Unfortunately for them, you can't just type "megs" in an email and expect it to look professional, so they had to write it out.  See below for the email they finally sent me back.

Thank you for contacting Adelphia Technical Support. I do apologize for the inconvenience. We have three levels of service so that would depend on what service you would have.

Basic HSI service:
Up to 256 kilobit download/Up to 256 kilobit upload

Preferred HSI service:
Up to 4 megabit download/Up to 384 kilobit upload

Premier HSI service:
Up to 6 megabits download/Up to 768 kilobit upload

The cable modem mostly crashes due to signal related. When this happens a technician will need to come out to clarify the problem.

Yes we do offer web hosting. You can get pricing and information by logging onto

If you have any further questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact us again.
EDIT:  This also means that I'm apparently getting UP TO 96 kilobytes per second download!  WTF!?
