Podcasts / Anyone tried to produce their own podcast?
« on: October 22, 2006, 12:39:45 pm »
Blogging keeps me busy but I thought I'd try to record a podcast. I got all the software set, worked out how to publish it to iTunes, came to record and it's just so difficult.

It's like recording an hour long voicemail message to someone you really want to impress!

Having tried it myself makes me appreciate what Steve does even more, I'll have another go, as soon as I get over my stage fright...!

Console Games / PlayStation 3 delayed until March '07 in Europe
« on: September 06, 2006, 01:35:28 am »
SCEE sent out a press release around thirty minutes ago - American and Japanese release dates remain the same.

From the press release: "The revision of the launch date in the SCEE territories is caused by the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PLAYSTATION 3."

More info and official link on my blog

This is absolutely disasterous for Sony, fascinating to watch though.

Any remotely active gamer in Europe can now happily invest in a 360 (if they had been holding out for a PS3) a Wii, and will have no space or money left over for a PS3 come March...

Xbox 360's Achievement and Gamerscore system has certainly inspired a lot of people (myself included) to play more games, more often, and has enabled us to prove what we've played, and how well we've played. Thanks to Microsoft's provision of their datafeeds from our Xbox 360s to various community sites, we also have the opportunity to show this data in various forms and through various outlets across the Internet through customised Gamercards, graphs, auto-blogs and so on.

The flipside is that this results people playing through games they hate, just to extract Gamerscore and rushing through games in a myopic frenzy and missing all the nuances and features that don't happen to deliver Gamerscore points or Achievements tied to them - this resultant behaviour (observable in many) is a bad thing.

Do you think Nintendo should adopt a similar achievement recognition system for Wii?

Podcasts / Steve's request for website content

Is anyone planning on contributing to the site as Steve asked in the last podcast?

I've sent Steve a review and a feature, will have to wait and see what he makes of it.

Console Games / Sony working on 150 deposit PS3 pre-order programme
« on: July 21, 2006, 10:15:08 am »
According to UK trade paper MCV, Sony are working with retailers to charge 150 ($278 USD) to customers wanting to pre-order a PS3 to pick up on the 17th November.

The strategy is that it will stop punk kids pre-ordering a dozen machines to put on eBay, and, when you come to pay off the remainder, it wont seem so expensive and you'll be more likely to buy extra accessories and games and stuff leading to the following scenario being played out up and down the UK - "wow, I only need to hand over another 275 ($510 USD)? Throw in an extra copy of Singstar will ya!"

While I support initiatives that will stem the ridiculous trade of launch window consoles on eBay, 150 is a massive amount of money for a lot of people, and think of the interest Sony will generate with tens of thousands of 150 deposits in the bank for two or three months...
