Spore: General / An interesting project for Spore vets
« on: July 01, 2009, 06:49:40 pm »
So, I've decided that I am going to make a brief documentary film about the hype leading up to the release of Spore. I'm looking for people who would like to help me with this project. I can handle all the editing myself but what I'd really like are recordings (whether video or just audio) from different veterans of the Spore community on their recounting of Spore, from the original 2005 GDC video up to the release of Galactic Adventures. I want to hear the opinions, arguments, the RPs and other forum games. Everything that went on during the excruciatingly long wait, and the almost universally disappointing release of the game itself.

I'm only looking for help from people who have been around from the beginning (not necessarily of this forum). People who's first glimpse at Spore was the 2005 video. Also, if anyone wants to try their hand at making the soundtrack for the film, go ahead and send me some samples of your work. I'd rather not use any copyrighted materials in this.

I'm going to make sure to get the go ahead from Maxis before I get too deep into this, and if any devs read this and would like to help, that would be awesome too.

So, does anyone actually want to do this? Even if you don't, could you try to let some of the older Spore vets know about this project? I know that most of them don't browse this area of Gamingsteve anymore and it would certainly make things easier.

PC Games / Penumbra (Survival Horror meets classic Adventure)
« on: June 06, 2009, 11:59:41 am »
So right now Steam is having a weekend deal on the Penumbra games. All 3 for only $5! The games are mix of survival horror and adventure games. It also makes great use of physics. If you like scary games or solving puzzles, I really recommend that you check these out. I'm on the first game right now and it's pretty awesome.

Music / Plushgun
« on: January 26, 2009, 08:54:22 pm »
So I found this awesome band called Plushgun. I'm not really sure what genre they belong in. I guess electronica or techno-pop describes it best. Neither of those are the kind of thing I am normally into but these guys are really really good. Here is their myspace page:
You can also find a lot of their stuff on youtube. Their debut album comes out next month and I definitely plan on getting a copy. Anybody else ever heard of or like this band?

Spore: General / How far can I travel?
« on: September 19, 2008, 01:22:41 pm »
There is something that is confusing me greatly. I have Interstellar Drive 5, however I'm heading towards the center of the galaxy and right now it seems that I am not able to even go 3 parsecs. Is it because I am in Grox territory? If so, how many nearby planets do I have to take down to be able to move further? I'm worried about this because right now I just can't quite make the jump to the next star and if I can't increase the distance I can travel that means that pretty much everything I've done in the area is worthless and I'll have to find another path to the center.

Spore: General / Can planets defend themselves now?
« on: September 18, 2008, 05:16:40 pm »
Since downloading the patch I've noticed that when one of my heavily defended planets gets attacks a few seconds later it tells me that the planet is no longer under attack. I don't remember it saying so anywhere in the patch notes but it would appear that planets can now defend themselves!

Spore: General / About that patch...
« on: September 09, 2008, 03:57:16 pm »
Well, I saw that Caryl was online so I thought I'd make this thread to ask: can we get an idea of when we should be getting the first patch and what kinds of things it will fix?

Spore: General / Deleting save games destroys the planet?!
« on: September 09, 2008, 09:56:16 am »
So my brother was playing Spore and decided he didn't like his creature and wanted to start over. So he deleted the save game only to watch the entire planet explode. We've tried to do things to get it to come back but nothing works and it doesn't say anything about it in the manual. So, what, is it deleted permanently? If so does that mean starting games on all planets and deleting your saves means you can't play the game anymore?

Spore: General / A proper thank you to the devs
« on: September 03, 2008, 06:55:08 pm »
To all the devs browsing this forum, I'd like to thank this time to sincerely thank you for the work you are doing.

People have gotten the game early, admitted to pirating the game, bitched about random things, and throughout all of it you have been on this forum answering our questions, giving us updates about the state of the Sporepedia, and helping with our concerns. So, thank you, Maxis, for actually caring about us. Hope everything goes well with Spore.

Spore: General / A serious discussion about mods
« on: September 03, 2008, 03:13:38 pm »
I saw some people talking about it in another thread so I figured the topic was important enough to warrant its own topic. Lets get right down to it, there are a lot of people who are downright disappointed by Spore. I have not played the game yet and I do not yet have an opinion on the matter but there seems to be a fairly group who are not pleased with the game. So, this leads to the important question: Will Spore be moddable and, if so, to what degree? If Caryl or someone else could answer this question, that would be awesome. Of course, Spore itself is almost a modding tool of sorts considering you make all the content, but I'm talking about actually messing with gameplay mechanics and such. I've known plenty of crappy games that have been fixed by mods and even good games too. Oblivion for example, I loved but the game was very flawed, however when played with the right mods all of its flaws are fixed. Hopefully things will be similar with Spore.

And if we can't mod the game, then the only question I have to ask the dev team is: Why the hell not?

Spore: General / New prototypes!
« on: August 12, 2008, 04:22:14 pm »
It's Tuesday and again we get two new prototypes. They are basically very primitive versions of the creature and space phase and are IMO the best prototypes yet. Terraforming planets and committing acts of genocide in the space game are lots of fun  :D

Spore: Sporepedia Exchange / Other videogame creatures in Spore!
« on: June 16, 2008, 05:18:03 pm »
So I thought it would be cool to make stuff from other games in the CC. I only have the trial version so mine aren't perfect but they're fun to make. Has anyone else made any?

Spore: Sporepedia Exchange / Smurfslayer's awesome abominations
« on: June 15, 2008, 11:39:01 am »
These are the creatures I've made so far. I really want the full version but even with the limited number of parts I think I've done some pretty cool stuff. Hope you guys like them.

The Kaddosaurus:

My first ever creature. Just a dinosaur, not really that interesting.

The Lorca:

My attempt at making a land dwelling orca.

The Quazakar (larva and adult stages):

Creepy insect creatures. The adult stage has a very high attack rating.

A strange moose-like creature that shoots acid.

A cool snake creature I made.

A three-headed dinosaur.

A bizarre insect creature.

It hops.

A large three-legged dinosaur.

Lots of arms!

One of my favorites. You really have to download it and play with it in the test area to appreciate it's strangeness.

Two creatures, one body.

Spore: General / I think we all just got owned
« on: June 14, 2008, 08:55:26 pm »
So before when I'd try to log on in the CC it would take a while and then finally connect and then it went down and said the server was having problems but now I get a new message when I log in saying that the code isn't valid for this installation.... so I think all of us who are playing by slightly less than legal means just got owned. Offline mode still works fine though. Really I don't see why they bothered to stop people now; it's just the free version and it's out in 2 days anyway.

Console Games / Best April fools joke ever

The Legend of Zelda: The Movie

The funniest part about this is, that actually looked pretty damn sweet. The CG for the monsters was awesome.
