I'm having the exact same problem.  I have spore on both a desktop (XP) and laptop (vista) on the same network.  The laptop is able to register and login just fine, but when trying on the desktop, it always returns the "unable to connect to spore server" response.  Even though I've been able to make a spore login id, the desktop still won't connect. I've disabled the windows firewalls, as well as the router firewalls, but no luck.  I know it can't be a router problem, seeing as the laptop connects just fine through it. Anyone have any luck with this yet?
