Spore: General / Re: The Grox (Spoilers)

...when I tried to go back to the center they did the cutscene about the Grox who then declared war on me and are subsequently attacking me...

Wait! whats all this about a cutscene? In my first (and only) space game, I ran across the Grox after following a wormhole. They were not hostile to me at all and I was able to talk to them through mission dialog. but after a few moments they went hostile and that's it, no custscene, no nothing.

After that moment I made a few more trips in an attempt to make it to the center, which I did eventually. But I've never seen a cutscene that had anything to do with the Grox?!

I'm really hoping what I saw at the San Fran event isn't going to be the final version but I'm afraid it might.

When Will was displaying the game. He created a creature, and started in the creature stage. At the loading screen across the bottom creature cards appeared. The title above this scrolling bar of cards was "Creatures you may encounter" now the game loaded to fast for me to see if he, in fact, did run into any of those creatures. But what was interesting, when he advanced his creature to the Tribal Stage, the game loaded again and this time the "Creatures you may encounter" list was entirely different. and all the creatures he encountered in the Tribal phase appeared to be entirely different. This doesn't mean that some of the creatures you were hunted by aren't there for you to hunt now. I just didn't notice (sooo much to take in)

So if this demo is any indication it appear the creatures you share the tribal stage with, are a new selection of creatures. This kind of disappointing but I can't say for sure what will be the case when the game launches.

But can you get their ships by conquering their planet? Or is it federation only? I really, really hope more militant races aren't going to get gimped.

you will only ever be able to control one ship during the space phase, any other ships is AI controlled and not under your direct control. Although we may be able to influence allies to do things. (Attacks this place, defend this planet, etc) We don't know about this for sure though.

Besides, did ww show that matterials editor as well? and do those clothes stretch and slap on the creature the same way parts slap on the torso in the creature editor ?

Actually he did exactly that. The options for 'clothing' seemed rather limited, and most of the items looked either barbaric in nature or very roman in looks. The items themselves though, where placed on the creature exactly like objects in the creature creator, with handlers to morph and everything.

Q. Will creating buildings in the Tribal phase be free form like the Civ phase

A. No, that was a feature we would have like to included but did not have enough time/resources to devote to it. Things like that will hopefully come later in the games lifespan, things like the Flora editor which we hope to have out sometime after release.

Could you clarify this a bit? does it mean buildings in the tribal phase will have to be chosen from a premade catalog, since there will not be an editor for them? or did I got this wrong?

That is correct, there will only be a premade catalog of building 'types'. We only saw one graphic representation of the buildings 'aka style' so at best we'll be able to chose from a small subset of building looks and types, or at worst ALL tribal building will look the same style, but just server different functions.

a) Will there only be the 4 attacks from the editor at creature stage? Or can we unlock other abilities?

From what i could tell only the 4 same attacks are used

b) How many weapon types at tribal stage? We've seen spears and blow-darts, but anything else?

I counted about 4, Ax's Spears, blow darts and something I couldn't figure out. there could be more though come release.

c) Are there only 3 vehicle types at civ stage, land/air/water? Or will there be more like Tanks and artillery, fighters and bombers, submarines and destroyers?

Land / Air / Water is all I know, it's possible your allowed to have more than one type of each, but he didn't show us this.

d) Did you see any ships aside from the UFO at space stage? Any word on how you'll fight wars on multiple fronts with just one ship?

Will encountered another UFO while in space phase and was able to talk to and trade with the ship(species). A question was asked if you could have fleets, the answer was no. It was then asked how you would defend your planets, and Will mentioned thats where allies come in. I'm not sure what that is going end up meaning for the final release.

When his little horde of creatures comes out of the ocean, the landscape looks beautiful!  Reminds me of the GDC '05 video...  :D

I'd like to add, that video is horrible washed out compared to what you could see there. The color and detail looks so much better in person.

if you watch the ww at new yorker video, you'll see what he has to say about this.

A while into the Q&A by John Seamour (i think), which is after ww shows the demo, he asks about that specific thing.

Thats roughly what he said, so good find there. granted he had like 1min to answer my question as others were waiting to speak with him. So i suspect his answer to me was the short version.

They may still have blood in the game. Might've just been off in the options to throw us off.

Having just got back form the San Fran event, this question was asked. Blood is Out, the game apparently didn't demo will with the female crowd with blood. so it was a marketing decision to remove it.

So I don't have to manage tons of PMs, I'll say this about the Graphics, It was actually a design decision and not a forced move by EA marketing.

Q: have you seen any of the transition (between stages?)

YES! there are some Awesome in game Transition video's with epic Music to go along, the Transition from Creature to Tribe is truley Epic. not sure i want to ruin the surprise though =)

To clarify, 'in game', in the videos are actually done with your live game assets including your creature.

And also, I have an answer to the great, "it's too cartoony" debate.

Um, ok, what is it?   ???

...It's better off not even mentioning at this point, as it might derail the topic entirely...

I think his idea might be best, since it was a personal question I got to ask him after the Demo and not something captured on film/official

You said he flew. Did the creature have wings? If it did, did the wings move?

Yes, the creature did have wings (butterfly) but now that you ask, I was so struck by the fact he was flying i didn't actually look to see if the wings themselves were animated. they weren't while we was on the ground.
