PC Games / Re: Fallout 3?
« on: July 24, 2008, 04:28:17 pm »
From what I have seen so far game looks like it will be a lot of fun! I can't wait to explore the ruined landscape. I wonder how effective melee combat will be in the game. (Or the other options for completing missions.) Oblivion always had a handful of useless skills like: Lockpicking, trading, and your character's ability to talk to people. Heres hoping that all the skills in Fallout 3 will be useful (or at least fun). I'm trying really hard not to become overly-hyped about this game though. The "oblivion in the future" style gameplay that many of the fallout fans seem to fear as a worst case senerio has me intruiged. Heres hoping that the game can keep most of the fans somewhat happy and yet still be accessible to the new commers. I know a game can not please everyone, but maybe they can hit some happy middle area?

They remade Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSP. Those of you (like me) who missed it the first time around should look into it.

I like the idea of adding the extra lands simply because it shores up that annoying problem of getting your team too level 100. With all that space I imagine that the final 4 equivalent would be around level 100.

If your into the RTS thing, Warcraft III is great. (The mods alone could be standalone games in some cases). I used to always recommend Starcraft, but with SCII on the horizon I would say wait for that. I really enjoyed Battlefield 2142 for about a 6 month period. (Note I did not play the previous versions and I quit with the release of the expansion). You did say you have the FPS pretty lined up. With Crysis, orange box, and bioshock and COD4 out its hard to be wanting in that area. I would recommend trying the free download of Sam and Max if you havent tried it. Its one of the few really good AND really funny adventure games to come out in a while. By the way, what card do you have?  ;) And how much was the rig, I'm looking to invest in a laptop before going off to college next year.

Everything Else / Re: Religion

I have no problem in thinking that evolution can exist, but everything had to start from some basic element of life be it a single cell or whatever and right now I don't think there is a good explanation as too where that first life form comes from. I'm a proponent for the thought process that even if evolution is fact, it could simply be part of God's plan.  :)

People tend to use science to try to disprove miracles. In fact, I think the vatican itself has a department that specializes in that job. To me though, the fact that some event had a 1/1000000 chance of happening at that moment without the intervention of a higher being is not too bothersome. Is it wrong to think that God could use the laws of nature to proform miracles? When something is explained away it doesn't lose any of its original luster in my mind. It just shows how humans have gained the insight to explain how God works.

I can see many the parrallels with miricales and evolution. Even if evolution were proven true, it would simply be another step in the human understanding of the world around us. It wouldnt make or break my faith.

(I do not come from a faith that takes the Bible as literally word-for-word what God said, but as the inspired word pasted down over generations) Thought that might want to be made clear  ;) I do not want to come across as condeceding or anything, but I figured my background would be useful

Yeah, its not that Lionhead has'nt made any good games in the past. Its just that it always feels like the games were missing some crucial element to make them great. (Or the game just sucked)

I for one think that trying to make a first person shooter a platformer is a poor choice. Its unnatural to try to judge distances from that perspective and normaly ends in frustration. (See the antlion sequence in HL2)

Simple add ons like advance wars DS where they give you the option to use basic controls or the touch screen should be the norm for most games. When you have the option to vary the control schemes developers should try to accommodate.

Everything Else / Re: Determinism Vs. Freewill

I belive in freewill. My philosiphy is that people are ultimatly responsible for what they do. Naturaly there are things that can stop someone from using freewill, but in a vacume I think humans have freewill. I could discuss why religiously I think there must be free will, but I'd rather not open up that can of worms.

Although I feel starved for an RPG right now, I cant say this one looks like my style. I'm getting a gimicky vibe from it.

I always found button mash to be useless in SSB. The controls are so simple that blindly mashing away only leads to someone who has spent 20min learning the buttons smashing your face.
