Spore: General / Re: Length of Gameplay?
« on: June 17, 2005, 04:07:36 am »
I think you could play it for aslong as you want to.

Well - yes.  But my question is: about how long does it take to get evolved to the sea stage, about how long does it take to save up for sentience, abotu how long does it then take to save up for the UFO?

I realize that the potential for lateral play is pretty much indefinite.  Hell, you could spend days in the animal stage evolving your creature into 20 different kinds of things.

But I was just wondering how long a 'vanilla' playthrough would be.  And apparently the answer so far is: no one knows.

Five times, plus.

I'm trying to get the genius by osmosis.

Spore: General / Re: Dyson Spheres

Dyson spheres need a whole lot of material to make. As in, "more material than it takes to make a few solar systems from scratch" more. It would be at the very end of the tech tree if it is in at all.

Ringworlds would be really neat though, but still cost you a huge chunk of change. Still, they are neat ideas.

Not true.  A complete Dyson sphere (assuming, for a minute, that you have some sort of artificial gravity technology to keep the sphere stable and keep people's feet on the ground - you can't spin a Dyson sphere easily) at 1 AU from the star (the distance of the Earth, for a comparable climate, at least to start with), 10 meters thick would require about 2-3 Earths worth of material.  Jupiter's core alone has 6-10 Earths worth of rocky material in it.

Of course, Spore having Dyson spheres is out of the question.  The surface area of a Dyson sphere at Earth's orbit is about 500 BILLION times more than the surface area of the Earth.  So take Wil's little planet, multiply that by 500 billion, and now ask your desktop to simulate it.

Hear that choking sound?

Spore: General / Length of Gameplay?
« on: June 10, 2005, 12:58:51 am »
The wife asked me an interesting question today - in the video, Wil is obviously 'cheating' and forwarding the demo as he pleases.  Is there currently any gameplay estimate for the pre-space game, or for each of the different stages?  I expect that they get longer as they get more complex - and that you could stretch out each stage quite a bit - but I was wondering if there was any rough estimates out there from Wil.
