Aw, I was hoping he would give the Mercs 2 a more thorough thrashing, like it deserves. He didn't even mention the laughable grappling animation or the crappy vehicle physics.

What I've played of this game has been great, but the only problem is the game crashing to a blank screen randomly, so it's near impossible for me to play it.

By the way, the traits system IS more in depth than just "ecologist! Warrior! Bard!" It decides the overall archetype based on the combination of colors you acquired, but it gives you more "hidden" traits based on what stage you got each color. Green in tribal, for example, lowers the likelihood of eco disasters. It's all right there in your space empire's overall history panel. Green in one of the stages, I forget which one, gives you a relationship bonus with every empire you meet. There are actually quite a few possible combinations out there.
I would still have liked to have seen more abilties, more traits, more control over the growth of you race and civilisation.

Spore vanilla is already a worthwhile game, though. The expansions just improve on what we've already got.
It's 5 shallow mini-games tacked on to a highly elaborate Mr. Potato head.

To make the game more gradual, it should have been a sims/rts all the way through. Perhaps start with one cell, he splits into two, soon you control a whole colony instead of the pac-man gameplay, the creature stage would have seen you control the whole pack in a sims/rpg fashion, before moving on to the tribal stage. The Space stage really should have had fleets instead of one ship and AI allies.

Also to add depth to the game, I would have liked to have seen more abilities attached to different parts. Some mouths might have had poisonous bites, some horns might have had a gore ability, and so forth, rather than the same four attack and social abilities. Furthermore, I would have liked to see a more in-depth traits system, picking up traits and respective special abilities and bonuses which would have had an effect even later on in the game.

I honestly thought that 'Nooo' was going to last the entire review.

Depth will come in the expansion packs.
I really don't think we should pay more than once to get a worthwhile game.

I haven't got it yet. Between all the negative reviews and the DRM I don't feel like buying it either.

That was a plot device, not a careless continuity error.
Still creepy as all hell.

Nowhere and everywhere of course! George Lucas fans will accept anything as canon so long as George Lucas makes it, even if it contradicts what he originally stated as fact!

Does anyone else feel like in the latest review it sounded a bit like Yahtzee was rambling a bit? I think he tried to fit too much into too little time.

They still haven't fixed the animations.

111 now. I think 100 was enough before Spore even releases anyway.

Spore: General / Re: Idea for representing warfare in Spore
« on: August 20, 2008, 06:41:19 pm »
Ah.. sorry if I didn't make that clear. It would be in stacks, but real time, and on the world map.

Still not fond of that Idea. I think total realism has gone out the window at this point, so I would prefer more traditional RTS style combat.

No thanks to turn-based combat. The rest of the game is in real-time, so should warfare.

Personally I would have liked their to be three 'tiers' of units, of increasing cost and strength, and a player can create one vehicle type for each.
