1680 x 1050 widescreen (20"), 3000:1 contrast ratio, and 2ms response time (important for smooth animation in games).

But a big, high-res screen may be a waste if your video card can't handle Spore at that resolution.

True, if rewritability is absolutely necessary, it's better to get a 20 cent floppy over a 40 cent CD-RW. Though personally I'd choose a 15 cent 700 MB CD-R (only name brands cost $.20+ each) over a 20 cent 1.44 MB floppy any day. In addition to being more reliable, etc., there's so much space if I make a mistake and burn the wrong 1.5 MB file to the disk, I'll just delete it and reburn the correct file, and I'll still have 697 MB left over.

But you might not have all that data at once, especially if they were text files.

You don't need to have all the data before you write. Even with a CD-R / DVD-R, you can always add additional files at any time later on (unless you force it to finalize, which is similar to flipping the read-only switch on a floppy, unless it's permanent). And with good burning software, you can delete and modify files even on a CD-R / DVD-R, although you won't regain the storage used by the old files.

You can easily get a 1 GB USB flash drive for $6. Or an 8 GB one for $25 (that's about $3 per GB). For all practical purposes new technology like this is making floppies obsolete. Even handing out floppies in class will become obsolete soon IMO. For example it's cheaper for me to buy a $6 1 GB USB flash drive (that holds more than 711 floppies) than to buy a USB floppy disk reader for my floppy-less laptop. And if the media will be discarded (as in being given to the teacher for grading, etc.), CD-R's would be ideal. Cheap, compact, reliable, more than enough storage space, etc.

Floppies do have one advantage over CD-R's/DVD-R's: they are rewritable. So instead of chucking it after it's been used you can just erase whats on there and put something new on. I still prefer USB storage, but floppies have their place.
Which is why CD-RW's, DVD-RW's, and USB flash drives exist, still at far better price-per-MB rates (far far far better). Not to mention all the other advantages (reliability, read/write speed, etc.).

You could also say that since a single $0.25 4.7 GB DVD-R has 3342 times more storage space than a floppy, the need to erase and rewrite data becomes almost obsolete for most practical purposes.

$2.00 / 10 floppies = $0.20 per floppy, not $0.02.

I don't know where you live, but in the US you can get a 100-pack of 4.7 GB DVD-R's for under $25, and a 100-pack of 700 MB CD-R's for under $20. That's < $0.25 per DVD, or < $0.20 per CD. That's not only competitive to the price of the 1.44 MB floppies you mention per unit, but when you consider that it holds ~3342 times more data, you'd honestly have to be just a little crazy to even remotely hint that floppies are still a good buy. Even assuming you could get floppy disks for 10 cents, a DVD-R still gives you roughly 1330x the storage per dollar.

Honestly I think you're a little too accustomed to using small storage devices, and you don't quite get how useful a large storage device / media can be. You say that because Spore creatures are so small, it would be wasteful to use a CD / DVD. That's ridiculous. For 25 cents, you can store every single creature and building you could possibly every create in Spore on a single multisession DVD. This DVD will last you years if you keep it safe.

Similarly, if I make a 20 KB document and I want to back it up, I just plug in my 1 GB usb flash drive and transfer it within seconds (unlike slow, noisy, unreliable floppy disks). I rarely use over a few hundred MB, but sometimes the 1 GB comes in handy, especially when you have over 1.44 MB of documents to back up (and this happens quite often if you like to keep a lot of stuff backed up). And for the price you can get them for now ($5.99 for a 1 GB drive is not at all uncommon right now), anyone can afford them

Not to mention the unreliability of floppy disks. I have a few floppies from several years ago with my old documents / work / etc., and there are so many sector problems and read failures, 90% of the content on them are totally lost forever.

Sorry if I sound too harsh, but floppy disks are so incredibly out of date it amazes me that anyone would still use them voluntarily.

Although i have a hard time to believe about the underwater part.
Maybe the developers do read forums and decided to put it back in.
Well we know they do read the forums. The question is if they did decide to do the underwater phase, why would they keep it a secret?

I doubt it's in, but still it's interesting to hear.

My ideas would involve expansions to the space phase mainly, because that's when most players will end up spending a lot of their time. Expansions, like extra missions, new things to discover and explore, and new dynamics. For example:

Ancient Civilizations
Adds the ability (if not already) to discover ancient cities, in ruins, and maybe salvage some of their technology, usually on a planet with tribal-stage creatures. Various ruins and monuments from the distant past could also be found on some planets, like ancient pyramids, etc.

Galaxy Wars
An expansion of space-scale battles, allowing full-scale space battles and combat, including the deployment of vehicles and troops from dropships, etc., and exciting "front-line" battle gameplay.

Moons
(In case it's true about moons not being present), the ability to have a visitable moon.

City Life
More intricate graphical, physical, etc. detail in the city and tribal phase, allowing you to actually enter all buildings and perform various purposes (buy items, take jobs, etc.) This could be a sort of "first-person" mode of the city/tribal phases where you could experience the world in greater detail when you want a break from your position as tribe/city manager :)

There are tons of possibilities.

Anyway, here's a little transcript of some of the interesting parts of the video. A lot of the speech isn't very clear and it's hard to "decode" it, but I think I got most of it:

We're about to have a (?), so I need to go back to my terraforming tools really quick and pull my atmosphere back in the right direction. (? something about an asteroid and mass extinction ?)

I could only pick out a few words from the part about the asteroid following, so I'm still "decoding" that part.

Wow. What kind of space-ship do you have? ;D

Anyway, I think since Spore gives you just one galaxy at a time, it will always be the spiral type, which has almost become a logo for Spore. The galaxy may be procedurally generated though (with variation from computer to computer), but there's really no way of knowing that for sure. Considering that Earth is located in a specific location in the galaxy that Will Wright was able to access through cheat codes, I'd guess that the galaxy is procedural, but with a fixed seed (not randomized). However, given the vastness of the Spore universe and the number of stars available, there's definitely no need to worry about a lack of unique content or stars.

Basically, I think (and hope) Spore will have one and only one unique galaxy between all players. This way it just seems more "realistic", in that you're exploring the "Spore galaxy", and the possibility of encountering other Spore creatures is not only possible, but probable. Otherwise if every player had a galaxy of their own, I'd feel somewhat "alone" in my own galaxy.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with the map - it's just different. In most ways it's a way better than it was (I like the transparent circular guide - it really helps when judging distance and scale).

Anyway, I love what I see in this new video. I certainly have no doubt that Spore will live up to my expectations. The only downside to any new information like this is that the excitement makes waiting even harder :)

I know, but I still kinda like the old way. For some reason it just seems like there's a lot more stars when they're not so much constrained to a flat plane (and if they do have variation of height, I couldn't see any).

I think those are from distant galaxies, so you wouldn't actually be able to visit them since AFAIK Spore gives you just one galaxy to explore at a time. So in this case they're probably nothing but a background image (notice how they don't really move or gain distance as he zooms out all the way).

Yeah, that makes sense. It would be really easy to get lost in a 3D starmap.
