Spore: General / Re: New Mech Creature Parts

But even if we sent code, they are invalid outside of the US.

During the process, you are required to give your address to redeem your code.

Parkaboy, who is from Brazil, managed to be able to upload his robots. All he needed to do is enter a fake address and wallah!

Yeah, just make a U.S. adress up. Worse thing that can happens is you lose support for your game. Since tech support for EA games kind of sucks and I always relied on forums for that, there's no big loss.

I know most of the player base thinks this was a lame stunt, but from the total lack of announcements it seems that Spore is on its last legs... I doubt we would ever get this parts if it weren't for this promotion....

The "Cash Flow" superpower can be used to fill the bar instantly. It's my favourite power for non-aggressive expansion.

Will Wright is still a consultant to Maxis and EA, so even after leaving he will still be involved.

I hear they fired about 24 people from the Emeryville studios (the one solely dedicated to the PC Spore), including Chris Hecker (chief animator, blamed by the community for the "cute" aspects of the final game). It seems they want to reduce the team since creating expansion packs doesn't demand a team as big as creating the game from scratch. It's still a shame, though. Chris was very cool to everyone that visited the studios on the Adventure Camp, and I really wish the nice people we met there aren't included on the cuts...

The EP is awesome, but don't go making many plans involving vehicles. You can't drive vehicles. You can ride them, but there's little stuff you can make a vehicle do. i'm pretty sure you can't place them on top of buildings, or other vehicles, nor you can make them crash into anything.

Spore: General / Will Wright quits Maxis to start the Stupid Fun Club
« on: April 08, 2009, 11:28:32 am »
Will Wright just posted this in the Sporum:

Hey everyone.

There's a little press release going out today as we speak (well actually I'm not speaking, I'm typing... (and I guess you're not even listening, you're reading (unless you're having your new Kindle read this to you in which case you are listening) but you're definitely not reading this "as" the press release is going out, and I'm certainly typing this hours before the fact....) anyway. (I suck at writing)

The gist of the story is that I'm leaving EA (well, not really, I'll explain) to start (well, not quite start, it's actually been around for quite a while in a rather different form) ... let's say dive into a new venture, The Stupid Fun Club. The Stupid Fun was actually started many years ago by myself and my friend Mike Winter, we met while competing in Robot Wars and Battlebots. It was apparent to us that one day the robots would take over the world and we decided we wanted to be on the winning side, so our initial charter was to do whatever we could to usher in our new mechanical overlords.

Along the way we ending up building and prototyping a lot of... odd stuff. People would come by our shop and get interested in this stuff for various reasons. Some of this stuff sparked new creative ideas, even (*gasp*) ideas that may have "commercial, entertainment value" (this is how you talk when you've been around lawyers and MBA's too long).

At some point we started showing some of this stuff to the people at EA. They got excited by the prospect of us pursuing these projects commercially (or that's what they said anyway, I think they just want to be on the winning side of the coming robotic revolution as well). So we started talking to them (EA, not the robots, though we do talk to them as well, but the robot responses are cryptic at best) about getting involved and investing in The Stupid Fun Club (we asked the robots first but they're all broke).

So as things worked out I decided to jump into my work at the club more or less full time. But at The Stupid Club we'll be working on new games (along with EA) as well as other kinds of projects with different partners.

I can't talk about specific projects coming out of SFC just yet (alas, the robots won't let me), but as things develop I'll find a way to keep those of you who are interested informed about what we're doing (but not with a blog...I'll never have a blog). A major aspect of the projects I've worked on has always been the player community, that won't change.

-Will Wright

Update: here's the site of the new studio:

Spore: General / Re: City Building Grouping?

The "set:" tag doesn't really work. The trick is to use the exact same tags on every building of the set. Just copy the tags from your City Hall to all the other buildings of the set. That works pretty well for me.

The featured MaxisCactus creations were just advertising something about Comand & Conquer 3, I believe.

Good to hear that!

Oh, did I mention there might be a possibility to design city walls? :P

On the screenshots and the video there were cities where the walls had the same theme as the buildings.

Trust me, those were made with the building editor. They were made to resemble wall segments, and placed side by side.

The creative possibilities with the free building placement and scaling should be exciting enough, without creating new fictional editors.

Dude said you can walk in buildings, not into buildings. That means you can walk on the roof, or on top of balconies and platforms. No one from the team ever said you can enter buildings.

If you want to create a building that a creature could enter, you will have to create each wall and the roof. Don't expect to magically click doors and warp to inside.

Was that way with The Sims 2 expansions, I have no reason to believe it will be otherwise.

I'm sure installing GA will patch people's games up so they have the exo limbs.

I have secret reasons to believe so.

They'll probably sell some promotional packages including C&C with the EP, and I advise you guys to buy it. Even though I agree with people who say C&C is too expensive for just a few dozen parts, I ended up enjoying those parts very much (especially the new textures!), and if you guys can get it cheap, get it! And not being able to play some adventures will suck even more than not being able to open some creatures.
