Actually, I think it was Hydromancerx who linked us all to an article explaining how an intelligent underwater species could have evolved without the use of fire or electricity, etc :)

I did a search for it and didn't find anything.

Does anyone have a link?

Spore: General / Re: Water, and its destructive capabilities

I agree, it looks pretty simple. There's just a "universal sea level" determined for the entire world that water magically appears at. From what we've seen of the planet demo at SIGGRAPH, there's no ability to have a giant reservoir high up in the mountains above sea level that water collects water and the ability to bust the damn and flood the land below.

The water in Sim City 2000 is particularly hokey --you just build waterfall squares that infinitely refill themselves.  You'll see people make giant pyramids of just waterfalls with no reservoir source that the water comes from.

Given their track record, I wouldn't expect great things to be done with water modeling. Historically it's not been their strength.

Yeah the SC2k water effects annoyed me. It was way too easy to get an unlimited power supply by putting waterfalls on every slope and placing a hydroelectric plant on top. Zero power plant maintenence fees and infinate power.

I loved making waterfall pyramids though.  ;D :D ;D :D ;D :D

You can only have an eclipse if your moon is large enough that it appears to an observer on the surface to be the same size or larger than the planet's star.

Curiously, the Earth's moon appears identical to the sun's size which is why total eclipses are possible here. I doubt this is a common occurance unversally; it's certainly unique to the solar system. The three other rocky planets we've been able to observe either have no moons at all or very small ones.

Of course... in Spore you could certainly design a moon to be the correct size.

Which begs the question- what about the tides? If you make a massive moon and place it close to the planet's orbit will you have huge 40 foot high waves? And if so, can you give your creatures surf boards?

Take animal from desert plant, drop it on icy planet.

Icy planet gives it the "shaggy_fur_a" mutation.

Take evolved animal back to desert planet.

Breed it with the natives.

Would some of their offspring have shaggy_fur_a? Or maybe shaggy_fur_b which would be only half as shaggy?

How about a planet that is shaped and colored like a giant Easter egg?

What may have confused him is how much those "trees" look like coral.

The trees would easily fit in an underwater setting. However, in this case they do not. Those pics are taken on land.

The creatures playing the drums were super cute. I wonder how the music effects will be generated.

Spore: General / Domesticated animals? (can't live without cheese!)
« on: July 10, 2007, 09:42:54 am »
It seems like it would be possible to make a "vehicle" that looked like one of your creatures riding another creature, so "horse"backriding is in.

However, will it be possible to domesticate animals? What if I want to build a fence and use my creatures to capture species and place them in the fence, and then breed them and use them for food?

Would this be possible to do?

From the videos, there doesn't seem to be any of this... or any agriculture at all for that matter. Will all creatures be hunter/gatherer until city stage, and then food is magically generated?

Well, I don't know the answer to that question, and Google is not being helpful. But our own sun looses something like 4 million Kg of mass a second. So, maybe not.

Well thats just because our sun spent it's entire fortune on Richard Simmons videos.

Other stars are much more slothful, just look at that fatty Arcturus. He just floats there all day and day (stars don't have a night-side) eating spreadable cheese out of the jar.

Giant wedges of swiss cheese.

Their holes would be like a human's nose, able to blow pressurized air. (but with a lot more force)

Their main attack would be plugging the holes with metal balls and shooting them out, like a cannon.
