Console Games / Re: Remember the MGS4 trailer? It was in real time!

I agree, I think that both Mass Effect and Gears of War are more impressive, graphically, than MGS4.  If you watch the extended E3 2006 trailer of MGS4 you'll even see slowdown in some of the trailers; as in framerate drops, not cinematic slo-mo, so I'm 100% sure it is realtime footage, I just don't know what it is running on.  Also, I was BSing about the Killzone 2 trailer being realtime; that entire post was basically sarcasm...

i'm not talking money, i'm talking touted power they can't deliver.
its sad that the 360 is less then a year old and already chugging (not just on this game).

Developers rush games, which can cause problems like framerate dips on any system, including PCs.  And there are games that run perfectly smooth on 360 with a lot going on.  Look at the 2nd gen of 360 games coming out this fall and holiday season, they'll run better than the early software - just like every generation before this.  GRAW looks amazing, and runs smooth, even with a lot of enemies on-screen.  Compare that to how much better Rainbow Six: Vegas looks, with about 8 months of time between the titles.  It seems foolish to say a system is underpowered before developers really start pushing it.

i have always been a pc gamer first. i'm not putting down the 360, i love mine it was a great buy i have had tons of
fun on it thanks to robust online features. however it just bugs me, that some of these games just don't
run to great, i hear that the saints row demo is a pre e3 beta, so i'm sure the fps will be upped by the time it goes
gold (sometime in the next two weeks i would think).

So you're saying it's in the developers hands to fix framerate issues, and that those are probably occurring because the game wasn't finished?  How does this prove the 360's specs are "not so great"?

as for the $3,000 pc, yeah sure if your buying from alienware. as for me, my entire
pc was $1,200 and i can max every game without framerate problems, and with the
$600 PS3 release, this money argument should go null and void.

$600 is half what you paid for your PC.  $400 for a 360 is 1/3 what you paid for your PC.  How does that make the money argument null and void, especially when most people would prefer the plug and play nature of consoles for ease of use?  What specs do you have for your PC?  As for ALL games with max settings running at 30 fps + with a $1200 PC ... I doubt it.  Pricing wise I have not looked around in several months, but earlier this year I was just looking at what it would cost to build a PC that could compare with 360's GPU and CPU, albeit having 2 gigs + of RAM, and I got to $3000 pretty easily (buying medium to high quality components separately).

Isn't that comparing apples to oranges?  Especially when you consider with consoles you're getting more bang for your buck.  Not to mention that developers can really push a console's hardware further by coding specifically for it, instead of dealing with multiple hardware configurations and wasted resources to get games to run on PCs in the first place.

That's like saying - "My $3000 PC is more powerful than your $400 console".  I certainly hope so!  You want to know what I did with the extra $2600?

Go to http://live.xbox.com/en-US/profile/Friends.aspx, you type the Gamertag in the field to the top right of your friends list, and hit the "Add Friend" button. Of course you'll need to be signed in with your passport id. You'll need to have your passport ID (now called LIVE ID, I think) linked to your gamertag to do that.  For directions on how to do that go to:  http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox/livefeatures/linkgamertag.htm.

Who say's the PC version is better than the 360?  ;)
I've only seen a few pictures of the PC version looking even half as good as the 360 one, and even then they probably bumped the settings up to max to take the screenshots..

My brother recently got a new PC with a GeForce 256 MB card, 2 GBs of RAM, and a Pentium Extreme dual core processor.  He had seen Oblivion running on my 360, and since he had a brand new compute decided to get the PC version of Oblivion.  To get the draw distance and detail even to that of the 360 version he had to deal with about 10-15 fps. He really had to lower the draw distance to get the game running smoothly outdoors.  Another thing is that the PC version won't allow HDR and anti-aliasing together, mainly because Nvidia's chips can't handle it.  The ATI chip in the 360 can.  He grudgingly admitted that my $400 console was outperforming his $2000 PC, at least on this game.

When people say the PC version is better I assume they are talking about the mods and the community involved in making them, which would be a huge advantage.  That being said, if you're talking about the graphical performance of the game, it would not be true of anyone with a setup that costs less than $3000, with dual video cards.  Unless you have some serious disposable income, it's not really worth it.

Online I'm not impressed so far. I keep losing my connection to COD2 and that's quite lame. And the community is impatient, too. It was me and my friend in a lobby before a game, and a person would come in, realize he'd have to wait 2 minutes to get more people in the lobby, and then leave.

Is that your real gamertag in your Sig?  It's showing 0 gamerscore and no recent games played - which shouldn't be possible if you play your 360 online.  Do you use a router?  I've known people with routers that cause them to disconnect from LIVE.

The game also shares a leveling up system similar to Guardian Heroes on the Saturn, which I always thought was awesome.  Anyone else play that game?  I guess a better question to ask is: Did anyone else even have a Saturn?

there is fps problems in the demo. i expected it from a game with so much going, and on the 360s not so great specs.

Not so great - compared to what?

Castle Crashers is a new 4 player side-scrolling beat 'em up that is very similar to Treasure's Guardian Heroes.  It's being developed for XBLA by The Behemoth, the same guys that made Alien Hominid (which is also coming to XBLA). The game looks like it will be a lot of fun.  The website is http://www.castlecrashers.com/. http://www.gamevideos.com/ also has a gameplay demo video of both Castle Crashers and Alien Hominid for XBLA.  I've also included some images of Castle Crashers:

I'm more excited about this game than any other announced XBLA title, this is exactly the kind of game I've been wanting.  Here's hoping it all pans out.

I believe Sony will have an achievement system in place but they will call them "entitlements."

Main Entry: en·ti·tle·ment
Function: noun
1 a : the state or condition of being entitled : RIGHT b : a right to benefits specified especially by law or contract
2 : a government program providing benefits to members of a specified group; also : funds supporting or distributed by such a program
3 : belief that one is deserving of or entitled to certain privileges

I gotta say that using "entitlements" basically misses the point of what achievements represent.  Maybe you'll get free points for buying the PS3 version of a game that is also on the 360.  Or maybe it's marketing directly to the type of kid that will actually get their parents to shell out 600 bucks for the PS3 this holiday.

The menu's, aiming system, etc are all exactly the same.

GTA uses a lock-on system that forces you to cycle through targets, and often targets people you are not interested in during a firefight. It's one of the main things I've always hated about GTA.

Saint's Row uses manual targeting more akin to FPS games, which requires more skill and is ultimately more efficient than the lock-on systems.  It will also have online multiplayer, and the previews so far state that is coming along nicely.

Developers copy each other all the time.  But when they outperform the "template" game, at least from a gameplay perspective, is that necessarily a bad thing?  Both Saint's Row and Crackdown look like they will do more, and do it better than GTA. If nothing else this should push Rockstar to make a better game with GTA 4.

BTW I recommend you people try Gamefly - I've been doing it almost 6 months now and it has saved me a lot of money, especially on 360 games.  Plus you can keep games you have rented and get pretty good deal for the "keep it" price, and they send you the case and manual in like-new condition.

I think 'the public' might have issues with a $600 price tag, but that's just a guess. Also, didn't Konami say that it was running in realtime back during E3? I thought that was generally understood.

No way, this is news.  It is not as if Kojima and Konami have a history of releasing trailers of MGS using the game's story segments, all of which use the game's engine.  All of the trailers for MGS4 are completely pre-rendered, unlike Killzone 2 - which is realtime GAMEPLAY, proving that the PS3 is twice as powerful as the 360. Considering that the best the 360 can muster is Gears of War, I think that much is obvious.

On the other hand, I was a big fan of the original MGS (what was that, eight or nine years ago?).  I played through MGS2, although halfway through I was really just playing to see if the story's loose ends would connect; instead I waded through a tangled mess.  I waited forever for MGS3 to come to Xbox since Substance did, to no avail.  After Subsistence released on PS2 I decided to get it, hoping that the new camera would improve the gameplay to match Splinter Cell's ... but the control scheme hasn't changed since MGS on the original PS, so I abandoned the game after a few hours.

So yeah, MGS4's pre-rendered realtime cutscenes will look great; and they will be unnecessarily long-winded and convoluted.  Yay.  Another great example of PS3's realtime prowess would be FFXIII (that's the right number, I think... talk about milking a franchise).

Would anyone else prefer to watch movies instead?

The Wraith only has one plasma cannon, which basically a mortar cannon.  Two would probably be overpowered.
