Console Games / Re: Reasons why not to get a PS3
« on: December 03, 2006, 11:29:01 pm »
Have you seen Lair yet Solaren? I saw a kid playing it at Walmart and was flabbergast. It's exactly for that kind of stuff that I wanted a PS3.
I wonder why they haven't released a playable demo of it on the PS Store yet. I mean walmart already has it for some reason....

I didn't think Lair was close to comming out yet. ???

This thread is basically irrelevant, since Sony's launch has been so inept it'll be impossible to even get one even if you wanted to. I didn't think they would meet their forecast, but I didn't think they'd fail by that much. This is just pathetic.

LOS ANGELES - Initial shipments of Sony Corp.'s hotly anticipated PlayStation 3 video game console appear to have been lower than expected, American Technology Research analyst Paul-Jon McNealy said Wednesday.

Large crowds camped out for days ahead of the PS3's U.S. debut on Nov. 17. Supplies were scarce and some owners were able to flip their new machines on Web auction site eBay Inc. for nearly five times the $600 price of the high-end PS3.

Sony had forecast 400,000 PS3 units shipped for Day One of its U.S. launch and 1 million units by Dec. 31. The Japanese electronics giant, which dominates the worldwide console market with its PlayStation 2 console, also said it plans to ship 2 million PS3s globally by year end.

McNealy said his research indicated that Sony's initial unit numbers for its launch weekend in North America were in the range of 125,000 to 175,000, including some of the 15,000 units SNE was sending to retailers for interactive kiosks.

"This number is below our previously lowered expectations of 250,000 to 300,000," he said.

"We previously expected Sony to be able to still make a calendar year 2006 North American and Japan shipment number of 2 million, but those numbers are now under review," McNealy said.

Sony spokesman Dave Karraker Wednesday reiterated Sony's goal of shipping 1 million PS3s to the United States, and 2 billion globally, by year end.

McNealy also said shipments of Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Wii video game console, which debut on Nov. 19 and costs $250, remained in line with his expectations.

Nintendo plans to ship 4 million Wiis by the end of 2006.

Podcasts / Re: What did Steve say about Resistence: Fall of man?
« on: October 01, 2006, 07:53:14 pm »
I remember in one of the past episodes Steve said the idea of R: FOM taking place in an alternate WW II era was in some book, anyone remember that book?

Turtledove's World War quadrology was about a similar situation, Alien invasion during WWII, however Resistence: Fall of Man is an original story.

Steve used to podcast weekly, now he podcasts weakly.

 ;D ;D ;D

God, I just kill myself sometimes. It's true though, I remember sometimes there'd be more than one podcast a week. Ah well, I guess we ought to be thankful
for all the stuff he did.
Not much news recently though....
All the bad news for Sony, the Wii launch info, all the Resistance: Fall of Man buzz. Tons of stuff to talk about.

There are a lot of great 19th century war songs, I especially like Battle Hymn of the Republic and Die Wacht am Rhein   (The Watch on the Rhine)
Quote
Battle Hymn of the Republic

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps;
His day is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery Gospel writ in burnished rows of steel;
“As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My grace shall deal”;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
Since God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Since God is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet;
Our God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free;
While God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on.

The Watch on the Rhine

The cry resounds like thunder's crash,
Like ringing swords and waves that clash:
The Rhine, the Rhine, go to our Rhine,
Who'll guard our River, hold the line?
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
: Your watch is true, the line stands here. :

2. A hundred thousand hearts beat fast,
The eyes of all to you are cast,
The German youth, devout and strong.
Protects you, as he has so long.
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
: Your watch is true, the line stands here. :

3. He casts his eyes to heaven's blue,
From where past heroes hold the view,
And swears pugnaciously the oath,
You Rhine and I, stay German, both.
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
: Your watch is true, the line stands here. :

4. While still remains one breath of life,
While still one fist can draw a knife,
One gun still fired with one hand,
No foe will stand on this Rhine sand.
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
: Your watch is true, the line stands here. :

5. Should my heart not survive this stand,
You'll never fall in foreign hand,
Much, as your waters without end,
Have we our heroes' blood to spend.
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
: Your watch is true, the line stands here. :

6. The oath resounds, on rolls the wave,
The banners fly in wind. We'll save
The Rhine, the Rhine, the German Rhine
Together we will hold the line.
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
: Your watch is true, the line stands here. :

7. So lead us with your tried command,
With trust in God, take sword in hand,
Hail Wilhelm! Down with all that brood!
Repay our shame with the foes blood!
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
|: Your watch is true, the line stands here

Books / Re: Wheel of Time series: What do you think?
« on: June 14, 2006, 08:31:57 pm »
Pity he's dying. He says there's something like ten or more books left until the end of the series, but he's not sure he'll live long enough to complete them, espeacially now that he's been diagnosed with amyloidosis.
http://www.tor.com/jordan/

There are not ten books left in the series, there are ten more books he'd like to write but there is only one more book left in this series (supposedly, it's rumoured it'll be 1400~ pages and maybe split in two like Tad Williams "Green Angel Tower").

Anyways Book 11 was infinitly better then book 10, it was definitly the best in the series since book 6.

Spore: General / Re: Spore for 360???
« on: May 14, 2006, 11:55:58 am »
I think EA will bring spore to the 360 because EA is money hungry and any way for them to make money they will take it. It wont have the millions of planets but im guessing about 5 thousand planets. what do u guys think?

I think it'll have just as many planets, ten million people will own 360s by the time Spore releases on PC and that number will only go up.

Looks like a tail to me.

yea, looks like a tail to me as well.

The thing about life is, symmetry is beauty. Asymmetrical creatures just aren't present...

Last I checked, crabs are asymmetrical.  Only slightly, but still, there are instances in nature none the less that semmetry isn't always the best option.

Yup.

Cold war gone hot eh? Hmmm, Our planned response to a soviet attack on Europe would be to immediatly nuke their armored calvery assets (tanks) since they had so many more than we did. So, I wonder if you get to play on any nuclear battlefields?

Well that's true for the 50s-70s by the 80s our convential capabilities had increased to the point that we wouldn't have used them pre-emptively on Soviet armoured forces. We would have used them however once the Soviets used chemical or tactical nuclear weapons to break the stalemate.

That being said from the screenshots I've seen you can use tactical nuclear weapons.

The trailer really has me psyched for this game.
