Title: Reading speed!
Post by: Gungnir on July 19, 2007, 02:50:17 pm
http://www.mindbluff.com/askread2.htm

I posted this link into the HP thread yesterday, and I figured since it wasn't HP related I should put it in another thread...

Anyway, I speed read naturally and I take in all the info. According to this, it's 450-500 words. Actually, it's 498, because I was two words away from the next highlighted section.

There needs to be some kind of tests at the end to see if you actually did take it in...
I got 200-250.

250-300...I'm pleased

You should be able to tell if you take it in or not. I find that if I try to read faster, i take in less, and I actually end up reading slower. Also, there's another piece of writing for the test. just change the 2 in the URL to a 1. I think it's some speech by kennedy..

You're saying you read at about 2000 words a minute?

If you can read that fast, it's surprising that you can't seem to write.

Beaten to that one.

You read between 550 - 600 words per minute. Highly efficient reading level. (The average rate is between 200 - 250 words per minute.) It is assumed that you did not skim the words nor fail to understand the meaning of what was read.

Well I am the best in my class.

350 to 400. I'm surprised, I always thought of myself as a slow reader. I might have unconsciously cheated though, that would be typical.

Yeah, I'm the fastest reader I actually know. And I read more than most people I know, so that probably helps. But probably there are some people here on GS who read more quickly than I do.

I got 100-150 words per minute.

Not too shabby, I'm quite happy with that.

Not bad, about what I was expecting to get. I think I was distracted for a second in the middle trial.

See? Your worse. You were bragging about something we don't care about, and HelloWorld was saying something completely relevant to the topic.

you tell him, AW!

although, technically, HW would've been equally if not more relevant if he had posted in one of the numerous Harry Potter threads, but...I guess I just like nitpicking  :P

When I was Reading slowly and thinking about it I got 100-150 words per minute.  But when i read as fast as i could but still taking it all in I got 250-300 words per minute.

If you were reading as fast as you could you may of got lower because of a little error in the timer, if you press  start twice it goes up in two's, if you press it 5 times it goes up in five's ect..

Clearly, you skim far too much. Like when you read this:

POST AWAY!

This is with just grasping the bare essence.
You read between 600 - 650 words per minute. Extremely efficient reading level. (The average rate is between 200 - 250 words per minute.) It is assumed that you did not skim the words nor fail to understand the meaning of what was read.

When I read more in detail.
You read between 450 - 500 words per minute. Well above average reading level. (The average rate is between 200 - 250 words per minute.) It is assumed that you did not skim the words nor fail to understand the meaning of what was read.

I got above average at 250-300 words a minute. Then again I usually don't measure my reading speed with how fast I can read in a minute but how fast I can read a book. To put it bluntly, on my first read through of Frankenstein I read the book in under three hours. I got the same time with Lord of the Flies, five hours with The Grapes of Wrath, and I read all of Atlas shrugged in a little over twelve hours. So yah, it's not about the words it's about the whole picture.

Shut up. That book was denser than Pride and Prejudice!

And I still think Tom Sawyer is better.
