Title: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: New poll for team announcements
Post by: Cobra on May 28, 2007, 05:48:22 pm
Pokemon Tournament Sign Up sheet this topic will be about the Tournament it will display the rules and host discussion on when how it will go down, please direct general game discussion to the Pokemon thread and try and keep discussion here only about the tournament. The Poll will be regularly updated to reflect options such as rule changes and to decide on things like the start date. Sign up in this topic

Rules:
6 on 6 battle all Pokemon will be set to level 100 it don't matter what level you are the game will automatically alter levels for the battle and give stats to reflect this keep in mind I don't think the alteration will effect EVs so it be best if your pokes have earned at least all possible EVs for methods on training consult the actual Poke topic.

Legendaries are banned! This is because it will be boring to let everyone have a team of the same 6 Pokemon as everyone else. To prevent confusion on what is and isn't considered legendary. Full list of Legendary Pokemon here all of which may not be used. (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Legendary_pokemon)

One member of a Pokemon species per team this is to prevent a team of Draginite or any other team being used once again just to keep it exciting this should be about having fun and not playing for your life here or anything.

Concerning the GTS you can use it to obtain members for your team just don't go out and grab 100 Charizards or anything like that granted there is no way to enforce this but just asking don't be a tool. You can grab low level unevolved pokemon and train them up. The ultimate way would be to gain via GTS and then breed so you get basically a clean slate just use your own discretion on best to do things.

Tournament will be knock out elimination hopefully we will have the right amount of numbers this is of course subject to change like all the rules depending on how many there are and what ends up being the best way to decide the winner.

If you insist on naming Pokemon keep it clean but that goes with out saying same goes if you decide to say use a Chatot with the Chatter move make sure its recorded voice is clean and generally keep it clean if talking on the Voice chat.

(Cool points will be awarded if someone has a Chatot who's Chatter move is a recording of part of the GamingSteve podcast)

The most important rule is keep it fun this is all about having fun it is all just for fun, currently no prize is set up. Maybe we can work it that you will be given the name of a Sim survivor tribe depending when it starts or Steve will comment on it in his Podcast if and when he makes a new one. Poll maybe to decide what the winner will receive if anything at all

I don't have the game yet so I'm not in, but I'd like to make a suggestion:

After you've had one competition take the winner and the four runners up and turn them into an elite four style team with themed pokemon teams by type and so forth.
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Tournament Sign up
Post by: gec05 on May 29, 2007, 01:35:49 pm
I'd like to be an elite. I have some themes to run off of too.

That sounds like fun, although I'd probably lose straight away.

Oh man, I like the Elite idea.

I've had the idea of site Gym/League Circuits in the past. Winning your way to a place in them might well end any arguments about who gets to be who, excellent idea.

Yeah, I wasn't insisting on being an elite but yeah it's a cool idea to work your way there.

Here's an idea. Post one specialized type for an elite to be named. Everyone that wishes to apply for it must only fight with Pokemon that are that type. It may not be effective on each other, but it's just to see who has a stronger party of the same type.

Maybe this should wait until after the tournament. Although I wouldn't mind whipping up a team of normal types, I don't have one on hand at the moment. And I have to get my main team ready.

I was already in the process of creating a team of ice-types, as it happens.

I think it would be pretty neat if, rather than designated types everyone follows, we could just have a list of people who are ranked as the best on these forums, and to get on that list, you have to challenge someone on it. Beat them, and you take their place. It would make a fun game that would last a lot longer than a tournament, assuming people stay interested and keep trying to get on the list.

Right. My first purchase of the holidays is a DS light and a copy of Diamond. I must get on said list.

Sam get Pearl its the least common version you will have better chance finding the version exclusives that way. Then again with GTS that point is mute but don't matter.

I did consider a concept of a forum elite 4 then possibly a champion we shall see how it goes when then torny is done. Rules for that can be looked into when we have dealt with this depending on interest had. there will be problems with people wanting to challenge the 4 + champ and not having them available.

Right now I'd like to concentrate on making sure everyone is ready for the torny I like to hope people will help others with things like helping them complete the Sinnoh dex to access to National one be it by trading or just pointing out where someone might spot the Pokemon in game. Possibly even helping if people want some poke to help build teams be they want to add them or looking to breed moves across.

Currently we have 8 people willing to be involved which makes a good elimination style play if more sign up like KS gets a copy of the game I might introduce a grouping world cup style to qualify this has the added benefit of everyone getting 3 or so battles at least each. We shall deal with that when we get to it and deciding this sort of thing is what the poll was put up top for.

If i get pearl it would break the established pattern of me getting the Blue equivalent of every generation (Blue, Gold, Sapphire). Also, VG cats has a point.
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Tournament Sign up
Post by: /lurk on May 29, 2007, 05:29:41 pm
Pearl is the Blue equivalent, since it comes second: "Diamond and Pearl"

It's also less popular, like all of the "Blue" line.

Hey i had blue. :P

Plus what would you rather have Diamonds or Pearls?

Fine, I guess you've convinced me... but... but... its *pink*.

Oh well, at least DS cards are small and invisible.

No one will see it when it's in your DS. It's not like previous generations where the cartridges where colours Gold or transparent red for Ruby or "Leaf Green". They are standard colour.

Hmm -

If we all get a type, I get dark type.

And where I come from, Sapphire is more popular than Ruby.

I don't see why not. You'd just have less of a range to pick from than the rest of us..

There's no reason why you shouldn't i don't have the national Dex yet but it is what I'm working towards if you want hopefully people on the forums will help if you want to get the National Dex.

Also remember you don't have to be completely strict with Pokemon types if an Elite 4 (or 1337 4 if you will) remember back in red/blue the 1st member of the 4 had a combination of ground and fighting types.

Normally you should keep question about how to play the game to the Pokemon discussion topic this is for the Tournament.

I assume u mean Hearthome gym. You hardly need help with gyms seeing the guy near the entrance tells which Pokemon to use and which not to use. The Puzzles aren't hard just basic addition math and plus you better off going in the wrong doors 1st to face the other trainers to gain experience. Once you faced them all you can return to the Poke center to heal up before tackling the leader.

I reset the poll with brand new question this is mostly just to show I havent forgotten or anything just in the early days its mostly about getting your own team ready I know we are all at different stages. So the poll just to get a gauge on where everyone is at least so we can keep it moving forward.

I'll probably have the elite 4 done by Saturday at the latest and then just round up the last of the pokes I haven't seen I already got most of them then I can Pal Park a make shift team if people want to hurry.

I got distracted by anothe game, but when I left off on Pokemon (and I will come back to it) I was stuck on the E4. I can take the first couple without too much fuss, but then I get to Flint, and it's just embarrassing how fast he kills me. My floatzel, which should be the silver bullet to that fight, dies really quickly.

I think I just need to grind. What's a good place to grind for that fight? Is Victory Road the place with the highest pokemon?

So, you can use things like Tyranitar and Metagross but not, say, Articuno or Entei?

Shouldn't these things go according to power rather than legendary status?
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Tournament Sign up
Post by: Cobra on June 07, 2007, 09:22:17 pm
I just went with Legendary status seeing it was a simple way to blanket ban and make it easy to know what can and can't be used. Like I said rules are subject to change and if people feel some Pokemon are to over powered or some legendaries can be allowed bring it up. This topic is in place if you want to suggest rule changes go ahead if there support for suggestions I'll put up a poll to decide.

As for beating the Elite 4 i find the best way sure training Victory road is good but I find that you don't have to take on the Elite 4 with the intention of beating them just place you Floatzel at the start of your party for the early trainers, sure that means it will mostly likely pass out quickly as it may not be super effective against who you battle it against but if you are able to bring down at least 1 Pokemon your Floatzel will get more XP from doing so that you will from any wild Pokemon.

Also use trainer search battling trainers nets more XP levels you faster. My Pokemon team averages level about 53 i wont go near the Elite 4 just yet got plenty to do just try and get just a bit more and have a few extra levels.
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Tournament Sign up
Post by: Devoid on June 07, 2007, 09:43:57 pm
53? That sounds like overkill. I think mine were at 46-48 when I got there. If my Floatzel were at 50 or so I'd probably be able to get past Flint. Dunno about what's behind them, though.
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Tournament Sign up
Post by: Cobra on June 07, 2007, 09:50:59 pm
I typically hit 55 before I got after them. The last guy (not counting the champ) Always has around level 60 and the champ is over that.

All my pokes were level 50 before taking on Victory road. Basically tonight I will make sure they all have the right TMs given to them all make sure all trainers are battled by then I'll start making attempts on the 4.
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Tournament Sign up
Post by: /lurk on June 08, 2007, 08:52:17 am
I have 3/6 pokemon set up fully. I'll need more time.

When I beat the Elite Four, my strongest pokemon was about level 56. Highest level out of everything else was 45.

The E4 can't handle Hyper Potions and Revives, so it's easiest just to cough up the dough.
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Tournament Sign up
Post by: Cobra on June 08, 2007, 11:38:35 pm
True. I beat the e4 last night highest was 55 going in lowest was 53. Worst comes to worse make sure you have a good time waster in your team that can cast sand attacks or something then you go about reviving your team. After you beat the 4 a few times you level up you have to revive less and you start making far more money than you ever spend to beat them.

Also got the National Dex I'm looking to get a ditto for breeding purposes I haven't seen one yet so I can't GTS it. Anyone got one they can send me. Also do Pokemon I fight in Battle Park are they entered into my list of Pokes I have seen? There are a few from the National dex i want in my team I'd like to get via GTS.

For Ditto, go to Canalave, go right and in the first patch of grass you see, Pokeradar. That's how I got mine.

I don't know about battle tower, I haven't tried it yet - haven't got a balanced enough team ready.

Post by: Cobra on June 11, 2007, 05:16:22 pm
Cool I'll grab a ditto like that as soon as i can. Until then is there a way to get the other starters. Pokemon I fight in battle park don't get recorded in my Poke-dex so I can't trade for them over the GTS. if you want I can off Chimchar, Turtwig, I'll get some Pilups when i get my ditto Mudkip, Also can offer Lileep reserected from fossil. Of course i can get you any Ruby Pokemon you might want.
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Which Pokemon are allowed poll.
Post by: Cobra on June 16, 2007, 10:08:25 pm
I placed a new poll although I may change it as I couldn't find a way to properly group the legendaries. I was going to go by tier's but I could find a definitive list of the current Pokemon and there tiers they are in also there are some none legendaries that are strong enough to be the high tiers.

Also I couldn't make the poll multiple choice so you can pick and choose whats in and whats out. Still I'd like to spark discussion on what people want to keep. The reason I made a universal ban is because it's easier to just say all legendaries are out than which have dispute on whats in and whats out. To have them all in seems silly as Pokemon like Deoxys is just over powered.

Still this is meant to be for discussion so post your 2 cents.
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Which Pokemon are allowed poll.
Post by: Bastardman on June 17, 2007, 01:04:39 pm
If you're going to ban Legendaries, you might as well ban the other Pokemon on 580+ stat totals, ie, Dragonite, Tyranitar, Metagross, Salamence and Garchomp. I guess that'd mean Slaking would technically also be banned.
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Which Pokemon are allowed poll.
Post by: Cobra on June 17, 2007, 06:51:13 pm
Well the reason for making it all legendaries is the concept of the legendary is easy to define. when you just bring in other high powered Pokemon it defeats the purpose of the simplicity of just saying all legendaries.

I got the one done well I still have to put the right TMs on it but I got everything I need so far. Macho brace plus Pokerus makes things so easy. Currently breeding some more for better IVs

If anyone wants one I can get like a Bidoof infected or something and then trade it over some time.

Yeah, pokerus rocks.
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Which Pokemon are allowed poll.
Post by: Cobra on June 30, 2007, 09:02:26 pm
I got Pokerus before beating the elite 4 also have it on Pokemon from ruby that I pal parked across makes things easy. Makes EV training for speed easy the most seeing how the Macho Brace slows Pokemon down so much even putting it on my Honchkrow I used to beat the main story which is now sitting on level 60 it became slower than mid to high 20's Pokemon that give speed EVs.
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Which Pokemon are allowed poll.
Post by: emmet on July 01, 2007, 01:45:17 am
I use both at the same time. Quadruple speed!
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Which Pokemon are allowed poll.
Post by: Cobra on July 01, 2007, 06:52:09 am
Using both is great I trained some speacial attack IV's with both but like I said with the cut to your own speed it makes it hard to train against pokemon that give Speed IVs (at they have good speed stats to begin with).

Just to clarify here.. are we going by Battle Tower rules as far as legendaries are concerned, or are all things considered legendary banned? (If it helps, i'm asking if Regis are allowed, specifically)
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: Which Pokemon are allowed poll.

I say that it doesn't have uber stats (Like Wobuffet or Arceus and pokemon like that) it's okay.

And I am 4/6s of the way through as of today.

Post by: Cobra on July 04, 2007, 10:04:28 pm
Currently it's all legendaries are banned I had a poll a few weeks back to change the rules most people voted for all legendaries should be banned but if there is enough support to change to something like Battle tower rules on what is and isn't aloud I'll be willing to make a new poll.

New poll
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: New poll for team announcements
Post by: Luminar on July 07, 2007, 09:44:09 am
My proposal:

All team setups should be PMed to the tournament co-ordinator on completion. Until the beginning, any changes can be made to the team as long as the co-ordinator is PMed about it. Upon the beginning of the tournament, the co-ordinator will post all teams on the main page, at which point they become completley un-alterable.

Benefits of this are two-fold -
1) Privacy is kept so that no unsporting management of teams occurs.
2) It becomes possible to check off an opponent's team against the list on the topic, so any cheating will be detected immediatley.

Also, I have a further question on an unrelated matter:
What happens in the event of disconnections during a battle? Wifi can sometimes be erratic, and fights may end prematurely in this manner - what action is taken if it occurs? Possible courses of action that I can think of:
1) Disconnecter automatically forfeits (harsh)
2) Mandatory Rematch (Does not prevent further disconnections)
3) The match is decided based on it's state at the time - whoever was losing forfeits (Can be abused, especially early in a match)

I like Luminar's idea. And I think it's best if a rematch is scheduled if there is a loss of connection.
Title: Re: The Gaming Steve Pokemon league: New poll for team announcements
Post by: Cobra on July 08, 2007, 01:26:24 am
It's neck and neck with option 1 and 4 I'll leave it a bit longer next poll will be to determine what happens in case of disconnection.
