Title: The Kratair
Post by: martyk on April 24, 2007, 06:19:52 pm
Behold!  The mighty Kratair!

This is my critter.  I've been working with this one in particular since about a month after discovering spore, so about 10 months.  The Kratair is a rather large species at 9 feet tall.  Despite their appearance, their race is mostly peaceful intellectuals.  There are of course those who are not, but as they don't form the majority, I won't go too much into that.

Hey look!  A long needed fanart section.  Look at them all!

Necros?  I havn't seen them yet.  Anyone got a link?

EDIT:  Nevermind, found them.  That's interesting that we both came up with such similar designs as far a physical appearance goes.

yea that is a pretty big coincidence, i think they even the same size. you don't wipe planets clean of life do you? but they don't look like they'll eat you on sight. i guess they are good.
Title: Re: The Kratair
Post by: martyk on April 25, 2007, 01:17:23 pm
Nah, they only wipe planets if you piss them off, and even then it's by spawning suns on the planet.  Kratairs are masters of Hydrogen manipulations.  They've been working with it since the equivilant of the early 1900's on Earth.

Yay!  an Update!

Kratairian Warfare

Although the Kratair's tend to try to avoid conflict, their straight forward, no-nonsense approch to everything makes them very adept at it.  They are fully aware of the potency of psychological warfare and as such, many of their weapons are far more extravagant than one might expect from them.

Almost all of their modern weaponry involves Hydrogen.  They have had countless years working with it as their home planet of Kratota was enveloped in a cloud of it, the breathable atmosphere giving way to it after just over a kilometer.  Their hydrogen wepons can vary from small handheld plasma-fireing sidearms using hydrogen from water in the air, to massive cannons that spawn suns on their enemy.

2. I'm aware it looks like there's a moon, but it's actually just the glare effect.  I ought to fix that eventually.

Well, I'm in a weaponry mood.  I just spent an entire English class doodling pictures of Kratairian armor and weapons, so I fugured I'd put this up here in preperation of those picture's arrival.

Here we see a standard issue Kratairian plasma rifle.  It is the most common weapon in the Kratairian army, except for mabey the nynth blade and plasma pistol.  Capable of storing large amounts of hydrong for use as munitions, it also draws hydrogen out of water in the air in order to keep it full.  Easily moddable with attachments such as scopes, stocks and grenade launchers, it is the quintessencial tool for the Kratairian soldier on the go.

And for added fun:

I'm fairly proud of this pic.  first time I drew a Kratair other than in the usual side view.  However, something just feels, off, about it.  I dunno what it is.  Mabey I missed a detail, mabey I should have made it look nicer.  Whatever.

Ya, the legs are a bit out of place, but I couldn't figure out what to do with them.  I guess it could sort of work, if the Kratair was turning at the hip.

I was thinking about doing that, but I just couldn't for the life of me get the foot to look good faceing in that direction.  It allways came out looking like a hoof or something.

The Sheni weapons I actually just finally got around to making a visual design for.  I'll see if I can whip together one in photoshop soon.  As for the Nynth blade, I still need to make a modern rendering of it.  I just have an only iron age one on the Kratair's wikipage.

Oh yeah!  Updates!  With the comming of Galactic Adventures, i'm doing what many others are doing, and that's making adventures based on stories of my wonderous pals, the Kratair.  So here it is, my first adventure.  Hunting on ancient Kratota, the long lost homeplanet of the Kratair.

http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=sast-500386663392 (http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=sast-500386663392)

It's not much, really just me messing around trying to get a hang of things, but you get to see a number of critters from the planet, which is nice.  I've got another one in the works right now.  Much more complicated, much longer, and much harder.  Been working on it for about 2 days now.  Should have it done tonight or tommorrow.  I've got a couple of little Kratairian history lessons like this one planned.

Allow me to spin you a tale.  A tale of loss, a tale of war, a tale of an empire lost and an empire gained.  This, my friends, is the story of The Kratair of the Novus Cluster

After the destruction of the Kratairian homeworld of Kratota about 10,000 years ago, the Kratair scattered out into the stars in their massive capital ships.  Over time, they either lost contact with one another or split appart for various reasons, dividing into many separate factions.  One such faction found its way into a section of space inhabited by a number of powerful galactic powers, such as the Naucean, Torpal, Sombreron and many others, carving out a life there and becoming a prominent figure within the galactic society in that region.  At the same time, another had drifted beyond the confines of the galaxy, into the nearby star cluster known as the Novus Cluster.

Unlike the other faction, this one had not been as united after the departure from Kratota, being separated early on and losing contact with the central government residing on the other fleet.  They soon fell into civil war, between the remnants of the old government, and a separatist faction largely formed of the largely repressed religious groups of the Kratair.

Before I continue with this tale, a quick bit of history is required.  As you may or may not know, the Kratair you are familiar with are very strict Atheists, shunning religion in exchange for facts and logic.  However, the Kratairian people were not always united under this banner.  For countless ages wars raged between the religious nations of Kratota and the Atheist factions, until eventually, the Atheists gained enough power to nearly snuff out the religious movements permanently, forcing them to worship in secret for fear of prosecution, until only a few communities still believed in a higher power.

It would just so happen, that a number of these communities made their home amidst the fleet headed for the Novus Cluster.  Without their large advantage of numbers, the ruling Atheist party of the government was eventually overthrown after a long and violent civil war, wherein every last member of the Atheist faction was wiped out from the fleet.

In time, the old system of government would be reestablished under the new banners of the religious faction.  Religion permeated deep within the culture of the fleet, becoming a central part of daily life.  As the fleet entered the Novus Cluster after years of travel, it didn't take them long to find a new home planet, New Kratota.  From there, the Holy Kratairian Empire spread quickly through neighbouring systems.  So far they had avoided any major conflicts with the many cultures thoughout the cluster in their expansion, choosing unsettled systems rather than those already colonized, but it is anyone's guess how long peace will last, as the Holy Empire continues to spread and it's disdain for those who's culture differs from their own burns brighter with every passing year.

3/4 view of a Kratair! ;D

Got anymore of 'em pics? :)

Well, given that the fact it wound up being 3/4 view was a fluke and I drew it while bored in the middle of the night I'm afraid I don't have any others handy, but who know what the future might hold.  I was actually experimenting and trying a more cartoony style than usual, but really the only thing that wound up different was the eye.

The 3/4 view was a fluke? ???

Awesome nonetheless! ;) :)

And wow, I never actually realized that the eye was cartoony before you pointed it out... Come to think of it, the Kratair in that pic seems to be more of a non-physical oriented than normal type of person.

The way his eyes look make him seem more like an intellectual kind of guy, as opposed to an athletic kinda guy.

Sharp edges and overall shape, slightly drowsy upper eyelid, pupil positioned in such a way that it seems that the guy is looking at something shorter than, or beneath, him.

Silent strategist or schemer types. :)

It must!

Anyway, I was digging though some old pictures and stuff and I found these delightful sketches from a while back.  I think if you actually read back a bit in this topic I mention them.  I guess I never got around to posting them.  Time to remedy that problem!

Bam!

Also, I've decided to update the OP with all the various fanart I've gathered over the years.  They'll be up there shortly.  Fun fact, some are from back when I was on Planet Spore as opposed to here.  Some in fact predate the Kratair's current design, harking back to when they were quadrapeds.  That was a good... 4 years ago?  Wow.

What's this?  An update?  And it's regarding Kratairian culture?  Absurd!  Unheard of!

Kratairian Numerical System

The Kratairian numerical system is very straight forward in design.  Unlike our own decimal system, the Kratairian numerical system is base-5, one digit for each finger, and a placeholder.

I've had this in mind for quite a while.  I just happened to get bored right now so I finaly opted to do this up.  If I can stay focused enough, expect an alphabet soon and, if I can get the time and the right tools, a useable font.

===Culture===

Are there subraces/subcultures?: Not anymore.

What are the rules of the society as far as gender is concerned?: The Kratair judge by ability, not based on gender.

How are children treated?: Children are driven to succeed and compete from a young age.

Is there some kind of coming of age ceremony?: Nothing formal, though there is an increasing trend for young Kratair to take some time to explore the worlds of other races upon graduation from the school system.

How does this society educate its children?: From about age 5 until 20, children are required to attend state supported schools.  After 15 years of this, they can either go on to furthur, more specific education for their career of choice, or apply to join the military.

Are children taught by their elders?: At younger ages Kratair are often taught largely by their parents, but upon entering the school system they are taught by profesors and independant research.

Is there a state-supported system of public schools, open to all citizens or are there private institutions open only to certain classes/groups?: There are state funded schools available to all, but those with sufficient connections, wealth or intelligence often opt to enroll in more prestegious private academies.

If there are limits, how well are they enforced?: Applicants to the individual academies are chosen at the discresion of the academy in question.

What sorts of knowledge are unallowed?: Though the Kratair wouldn't call it knowledge, the teaching of religion is strictly prohibited, apart from simpply learning the theory in the context of history.

How severe are the penalties for breaking these laws for the teacher?: Depending on the severity and amount taught, the punishement can range from hefty fines, to lengthy imprisonments, or in extreme cases, execution.

For the student?: If the information is pursued independently or taught by request, punishment tends to be as severe as it would be for a teacher.  Otherwise, they are usually only let off with stiff warnings and counselling to ensure that they do not make the same mistake again.

Do certain professions require different schooling?: Depending on the desired profession of the student, there are a number of varried universities they may attend upon graduation from the standard schooling system, as well as a number of military academies.

What is considered the minimum level of education necessary to be a successful adult?: At the bare minimum the 15 years of mandetory schooling is required, though it is generally considered unwise to just stop there.

How are pregnant females treated?:  Females are not pregnent with eggs for very long before laying, and as such they are not usually given too much special treatment.

How are the elderly treated?: Depending on what they have done over their lives, they can be looked at as valuable repositories of experience and knowledge.

How does this affect the raising of children?: Children often talk to their elders regarding problems, or in order to learn from their experience.

The transmission of knowledge?: All knowledge in Kratairian history is recorded in the Great Library, reaching back to the earliest periods of Kratairian civilization, in meticulous detail.

The concept of lineage and family?: With the use of the Great Library, a Kratair can trace their lineage back thousands of years, and learn of all the deeds and misdeeds of their ancestors.

How does this race view the physically/mentally/emotionally disabled?: So long as you can still function well mentally, physical disability is not seen as being too much of a problem.  Mental disability is often seen as catastrophic.  In the event where they can still function somewhat, they are often assigned simple, drab jobs that others would not want.  In more severe cases, where they would only prove a burden on socitey, they are usually euthanized.

What is considered to be disabled?: Any sort of mental disability is generally very looked down on.  Intellectualism is very important to the Kratair.

What are racial views on intoxication?: From time to time, such as for certain celebrations, the Kratair do partake in intoxicating beverages.

Is there a stigma associated with being intoxicated or is it just part of life or is it viewed as part of a religious ceremony?: It is often just a part of life, used to unwind.

What makes people intoxicated?: There are a variety of beverages available for purchase.

What does this race consider to be deviant behavior?: Religious devoutness is by far the most obvious.

Why are these people considered deviant and is the label fair or not?: The Kratair have fought long and hard to wipe out religious fanatics who would have done the same to them.

What is considered criminal behavior?: The usual.  Theft, murder, religion, arson and whatnot.

How is this crime detected and how is it punished?: The Kratairian fleets are fully equiped with advanced monitoring systems, and staffed with skilled security forces.  Depending on the severity of the crime, punishments can range from community service, right up to the death penelty.

How is marriage arranged?: Marrige is an option that pairs of males and females can opt into, a union demonstrating their commitment to eachother.  Marrige, however, is not required for anything.

Where do married couples/groups live?: Married couples will usually live together, though this is not true in all cases, most noteably when involving members of the Navy.

What is a marriage ceremony like?: It can be simple, or lavish depending on the desires of the couple.

What other ceremonies are important and why?: There are no major ceremonies celebrated, though there are various holidays.

How is death viewed?: Death is a sad occasion, but seen as innevitable, at least for the time being.

What is the funeral ritual?: The deceased is noted as passed in the Great Library, while friends and family record tales and memories of them.  The body is intered in a vaccume sealed caseket and jettisoned, often into stars.

How is grieving handled?: The family and friends will often be upset about the loss for a time, but for the most part life continues as usual.

How long do they last?: Not long.

How is inheritance determined?: Inheritence is determined by legal will or ,in the absence of this, given to the next of kin.

How important is birth order?: There is not too much importance, though first born are generally held in higher regard.

How is the family organized?: Family is generally regarded as immediate reletives.

Who is in charge?: Children usually respect and obey their parents.

How are children named?: Kratair have two names, a given name, and a family name.

Is there some kind of ritual to it?: No.

Does a person's name change through time?: Not usually, though they may change their given name if they so desire.

Are names considered powerful?: Not so much, but some names do carry a lot more history and respect with them, espeically in the case of families who have held polictical posts for a very long time.

Does a person have a private name and a public name?: No.

How does this race relate to other sentient beings?: The Kratair are generally cooly acceptive of other races, though there are a number who are quite xenophobic.

Do they recognize other beings as sentient?: Yes, and respect those who have earned their place among the stars.

How is this race perceived by its enemies and/or allies?: The Kratair are feared and respected as one of the foremost naval powers in known space.

Why are these groups enemies or allies?: The Kratair have aligned themselves with or against a number of races for a variety of reasons.

Have these alliances changed over the years?: Some have, some have not.

What does the race consider to be the ideals of their society?: They see themselves as intellectuals, mediators, and enforcers.

What is the worst thing you could do if you were a member of this race?: Form a religious cult.

What is the best/most noble thing you could do if you were a member of this race?: Win a great military victory or develop some great new technology or science.

What personality traits does this race admire?: Intelligence, bravery, cunning

What personality traits does this race despise?: Stupidity, weakness, religious devoutness

Who or what does this race consider beautiful?: Along with intelligence, bright eyes and vibrant stripes are seen as attractive within the Kratair.

What makes up that image of beauty?: Intelligence should be a given by now, while bright eyes are generally seen as more alive and thoughtfull.  Vibrant stripes on the other hand allow one to stand out more.

What is valuable to this race?: Knowledge, power, history.

Do they like pie?: I suppose they might like meat pies.

Kratairian Language

The Kratairian language is based around a phonetic alphabet similar to a number of those on Earth.  There are exactly 25 letters, 5 punctuation forms, 5 mathematical signs and 5 digits, for a grand total of 40 standard characers, or 130 by their number system.  Of course, as time has gone on, there developed a need for certain, specialized symbols that are not a part of the commonly used alphabet.  An example of this in our own alphabet would be the "@" symbol.

Each letter is designed for efficency, only consiting of 2 or 3 straight lines of curves.  This is a throwback to when the Kratair still utilized clay tablets for their record keeping, and lines were easier to etch.  The alphabet used by the modern day Kratair is only slightly different from that used by their ancestors.

Unlike languages such as english, there is no distinction between vowels or consanants, with all letters having only a single sound, without being altered by surrounding letters, such as in the case of "ch".  However, certain letter combinations can result in unique sounds, simple due to the way that one letter rolls into the next.  An example of this would be the combination of "kh", which results in a hacking sound, as one might make if they have something stuck in their throat.  In addition to this, they also have a number of letters devoted to sounds unused in most human languages, such as growl or snort noises, a sharp "tht" noise with the tounge and top of mouth, and a tounge click.  A number of said noises can be said while inhaling as well as exhaling.

Due to the fact that each letter is an unchangeable sound, they also have different letters for things where we may only have one an example of this would be the difference between "E" in "see" and "set".

Furthurmore, they do not distinguish between certain sounds as we do nor repeated sounds.  They have no equivalent of the letter "C", as it is represented by "K" or "S".  The "A" sound in "area" and the "E" in "egg" are both also represented with the same letter.

On a side note, as in with some European languages, Kratair's roll their "R"s and "Z"'s are interpreted as "th" sounds.  An example of this would be their city of "Razon", which would be said as "Ra'th'on".

Apart from those distinictions however, the language opperates similarly to our own.  Each word is comprised of a combination of hard and soft letters, divided into sylables.  Punctuation wise, it is most similar to spanish, with notation indicating questions and exclamations at both the beginning and end of the sentance.  Basic statements however, have no notation and are divided from one another with a single mark.

Here we have some examples of basic words.

Those ones I just did up in paint.  The current set I'm working on is using a program called Type Light.  I designed the letters fairly on the fly, simply keeping in mind that the Kratair would use mostly simple, straight lines or gentle curves.  Similar sounding letters have similar appearances.  Harder sounds are mor angular, softer ones more rounded.

Font is done, as reflected in the updated post about language.  Download it here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?vkimrnovyem (http://www.mediafire.com/?vkimrnovyem)

It is called Kratera, which is how the Kratair would write Kratairian.

Bellow you can see a sample of it in action.  I redid my post on their language in Kratera, adjusting letters and punctuation as necessary to make it work with their alphabet.
