Title: Napster, Limewire, Kazaa, Other
Post by: Brandonazz on March 29, 2007, 10:46:41 pm
Hypothetically speaking, because it's illegal to download free music ;), which of those programs are best in terms of download speed, ease of use, selection, and virus protection. Hypothetically speaking  ;), I would use limewire.

If all of these sites promote illegal music downloads, they shouldn't be posted here.

Napster doesn't. It hasn't for years. So I'd go with them I guess as opposed to Kazaa or Limewire.

I always find that a good Bittorrent site is a better alternative than any of those programs, no matter what you're searching for.

If one is looking for a single song or two, Limewire isn't too bad.
But torrents are always better in pretty much every case.

However, dont forget you can download songs from iTunes and the like too :)

Pfft. You can get the real good stuff at a place called Wal-Mart.

Stop being bums*.

*Bums in the sense of a homeless person, not in the British/Soccer Mom way of referring to the buttocks.

I suppose I have to go to America to find good music, then.
K-mart is terrible at selling music, even the local music shop dares not sell much beyond the charts. And maybe one System of a Down single.

It's really not worth downloading music.
The risks are simply too high.

What he means to say is: when you're breaking the law, don't record/tape/write/post a topic about it. Just deal with it, quietly, in the manner that'll download the least spyware onto your computer/get you arrested least. But Danzik is right.

Also, WINKING DOES NOT HELP.

I have to admit i tend to prefer buying music than downloading it although with my friend going on holyday soon the radio show is going to need a new source of music I may have to obtain more may turn to some downloads.

I remember back a few years ago my brother was downloading lots of Stargate episodes.  And we got an email from our ISP saying MGM wanted our personal info because they had caught us downloading copywritten content. Our ISP said no to them and said that they knew we wouldn't download illegal content and that it must have been someone visiting us who used our computer to do it, and that we should moniter how our guests use the computer. Nothing more was ever heard about it.

And it's not even some local ISP where they might actually know us, it's a huge company. Other people I know have also gotten similar emails.

I used BearShare before the idiots who made it tangled spyware into everything. Then I changed to LimeWire. I use only it for songs, because if it's bigger than a few megabytes, then I might as well just use Torrents.

Technically,Limewire isn't illegal. It's sharing files between two sources with no money transactions.

Limewire Pro is illegal I think. regular Limewire isn't.

Something tells me that its more "accepted" to download using bittorrent in Sweden then in other countries... I mean, almost everyone do it, and the risk of getting caught is so extremely small, I think they've caught nothing more then 5 persons in the last 2 years... And I also heard about some law that they are working with that will make it even harder for the police to track downloaders. We even have a quite popular Piratpartiet (The pirate party). Some of the bigger parties are also for leagalising downloading, but they want to solve it in another way, like having a downloading lisence. I always use bittorrent, its much safer and way more reliable.

The programs are all legal. Now, if you dload/upload something that has a copyright on it...that's illegal.

Not for ares. That's because you can't burn the stuff.

Are you willing to test that out in front of a court? I ask, because I have several very free programs which will allow you to take that stuff you downloaded and copy/burn it and I don't think saying "oh but the program won't allow you to burn it" will get you off the hook - especially if you've downloaded something in violation of distribution law.

We have laws which prohibit that stuff too. And you're forgetting two things called international law and extradition.

Your inability to burn it doesn't make something legal if it's still unauthorised distribution.

No, you have to provide me with the sources. Telling someone "look it up" does not prove your point.

I don't see anything that supports your point at all.

In fact, following one of the links off that page throws up an advisory from the programmers themselves, saying:

Quote
Copyright infringement can result in significant monetary damages, fines and even criminal penalties

I get the impression you don't know what you're talking about, since that doesn't mean that this:

The programs are all legal. Now, if you dload/upload something that has a copyright on it...that's illegal.
Not for ares. That's because you can't burn the stuff.

Is right.

Q: Is Ares P2P illegal?
R: No. File sharing applications, in and of themselves, are not illegal; they are simply technologies that enable the sharing of computer files. However, as with many technologies, people can use file sharing applications in ways that are legal or illegal.

Copyright Infringement
Files containing copyrighted works, such as popular games, movies, music, and software, may be uploaded and downloaded from the Internet using applications such as Ares P2P without proper authorization. Such actions can be violations of copyright laws and subject the user to criminal and civil penalties.
Title 17 of the U.S. Code includes stiff penalties for copyright infringement, including significant fines and in severe cases even jail sentences. All P2P users are urged to respect copyright laws and to learn more about them.

Limewire is only good for porn

He has a point. Ever tried to find a video on Limewire? It got to the stage where me and a few friends invented the 'Limewire' game, in which you have to search for things in 'Video' to try to find something that does not come up with porn films*. So far, no-one has emerged victorious.

*Although it has to be a real word, so no gibberish. 'Real word' is verified by whether any other results come up.
