Title: Naukal - Now Part Of The NNTA

In the same system as the Nyctos (http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?topic=8055.0) and the Tempori (http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?topic=8078.0)

Aquatic sapient creatures from ocean world Naujek. the Naukal are currently in their tribal stage a little above Stone Age man in tecnology. They haven't progressed much further because they have yet to discover fire.
Anatomy Overview:While not truly amphibious, they can breath air through a set of small air sacks that function both as lungs and buoyancy devices. When on land they are able to pull themselves along their thick-scaled bellies with their arms and webbed hands, leaving their strong, dolphin-like tail dragging along. Most of their senses are dulled on land; they are very near-sighted, their sensory head-tentacles are rendered numb, as like our taste buds, they only function when wet, and their hearing becomes all but non-existant. While their sense of touch is not completely deadened, they are unable to sense vibrations in the air. Their major natural defense is a large, venom tipped spine on their back-fin. This venom will not cause death or pain, but will cause 8 hours of paralasis and sensory deprivation followed by another 4 hours of muscle spasms as the nerves slowly come back on line.
Behavior and Hunting:They are usually nocturnal, waiting untill sundown to begin hunting the deep sea creatures that migrate up from the depths to feed on the abundant plankton of the surface zone. They have three methods of hunting: Use their head-lanterns to attract small shell-swimmers, use shark-dolphin skin nets to catch schools of Tatoo-squid and Snappers, or actively chace down larger shell-swimmers and shallow-water shark-dolphins using their red eyelights which are invisible to the deep-dwelling swimmers. Their powerful, clamp-like jaws will then crush and tear anything unfortunate enough to be caught inside, flesh, bone, shell or otherwise. However, despite being fierce predators, they are unbelievably curious, mischievious, and hyperactive when not hunting. In fact the first recording of a Naukal voice by science probes was "Aaaa! Hed yij jlayek! Alk rny!" translating to "Ooooh! It's so shiny! Must touch!" :D
Language:Like our own language, Naukal speak, or Yixnikanaukal  (litterally translating to "the speak of water beings") consists of sounds produced by vibrating a fluid with vocal chords, with the exception of "M", which is said by snorting out the gill openings and only used in reference to oneself. Naukal language consists of simmilar sounds to ours, except those which require lips to pronounce (B, F, M[see above], O, P, Q, V, and W). Most words are made up of single-syllable word parts. For example, Yixnikanaukal can be broken down as follows: Yix- (specific modifier) -nik- (core word for talk or speech) -ka- (possesive modifier [extra "k" deleted]) -Nau- (water, one of their three elements) -kal (suffix denoting sapient creature)
Numbers:Naukal matematics use a base three system, after their belief in the three elements: Air, represented by zero, is the absence of the other two elements. Earth, represented by one, is viewed as a single surface that only allows for movement on that surface, hence being of one elevation. Water, represented by two, is seen as a media that is moved through and not on, being of multiple elevations. Relativly complex operations such as division, multiplication, exponents, roots, inequalities, and even solving for variables comes as easilly to them as our base-10 math comes to us. They count not only on their fingers, but also on other body parts: 5 right fingers, 4 right gill slits, right eyelight, lantern, 6 dorsal spines, left eyelight, 4 left gill slits, 5 left fingers, coming to a total of 27 or 3 cubed. They haven't discovered fractions, decimals, or negative numbers yet, though.

Up next: Naukal skeleton, tools, and scociety. Feel free to ask questions ;D

nice creature.
(wow, base 3 numbering system! So their number for 81 is like 10,000! I hope they don't have to count very high  ;))

Lol, they just never realy have any use for them, though. Fractions and decimals are used for describing values between whole numbers or simply parts less than a whole number. the only time they deal with those is when they don't finish their dinner :D. Negatives, on the other hand, are completely alien. You cant go -5 miles or eat -10 fish or have -3 members in your tribe or make -7 spears in -2 days. They know subtraction, but anything less than zero seems like an absurd concept to them. How can you have less than nothing? ???

Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post

yeah... but I couldn't figure out how to give them advanced tech without them discovering fire. They have the necissary brain power and social skils, they just don't have anything to work with except animal prodicts, stone, and wood. Maybe this is why water civilizations might be cut out.

Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post

Not very high. They have shark-dolphin skin paper to scratch marks in to help them out, though.

They could use volcanic vents for heat and smelting things together and...getting killed by lava/magma or heat or getting turned to stone when the lava solidifies...hmmm :-\...I'd sure hate to be aquatic :D

Besides the fact that they can't dive that deep. Note how they wait for their prey to come to them, instead of going down to get 'em. Fortunately they're partially amphibious.

Naukal tribal tattooes, as shown on a typical Naukal female.

These patterns are unique to every tribe. There are nine tribes, from top to bottom starting in the left collumn: Warm seas, Cold seas, Coral reef, Arctic, Southern, Swamp, River, Beach, and Island. Their actuall names in Naukal speak are Degkacldnau, Degkanldnau, Degkazala, Degkadak, Degkalak, Degkanause, Degkacaknau, Degkaxaase, and Degkaseklu, respectively, with Degka- meaning "tribe of-"
Young Naukal recieve these tattooes apon returning from their first venture on land at about 6 yul or Years of age. Which brings us to Naukal time...

Dul=day=sunset to sunset
Tul=tide=new moon to new moon=27 days
Sul=season=3 tides
Yul=year=one revolution around the sun=3 seasons
Trul=triad=3 years
Lul=lifetime=27 years=adverage Naukal lifespan

No, the skin is permanently dyed that color by the ink because they actually inject it into the thin membrane between the support rays. The membrane is used as a tertiary oxygen gathering system (with gills being primary and the air sacks being secondary) and is filled with blood vessles to absorb oxygen directly from the enviroment, like frogs. The blueish color of the membrane comes from the copper-based blood that flows within. While less efficient than iron-based blood, Naujek's high oxygen levels compensate for this. And, yes, there is such a thing as copper based blood. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemocyanin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemocyanin)

Lol, you can thank those to a Mr. Kit Fisto of Star Wars http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kit_Fisto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kit_Fisto)
I actually didn't know what stage to put them in. Tech-wise, they're Stone Age. But having an advanced language, pretty good mathematics, cities, schools, and a working knowlage of biology, that puts them at about were we were a few hunderd years ago. Again I say that they would advance tech-wise, if they only had a starting point (fire)

well that may complicate things, but what if they found fire on the shores, they are partially amphibious. maybe a meteor shower might make a forest catch fire and one of the Naukal could find a way to use it. i also like the way the don't believe in negatives.

Exactly. It's so sad :'(

Here is a sampling of what they've made so far:

Shark-dolphin tooth spear: Simply one of the predator's teeth secured to a piece of wood by strips of said predator's skin. Used for hunting large game or self defense.
Coral Writing quill: A piece of coral ground to a sharp point in a cup of another species of coral. Used either alone for making scratches to write or with the cup for grinding. Smaller, thinner versions are used as needles for sewing.
Tattooing syringe: A naturally hollow Tree-cone needle poked into a bulb of sewn Chomper skin. A wad of clay on the other side keeps it water-tight. The rubbery skin acts like the bulb of our eyedroppers, sucking and pushing fluid. Used to inject Tattoo-squid ink into the membranes of a young Naukal (see above)
Coral bow and arrow: Arrows are made of a cyndrilical coral piece slotted onto a stone arrow tip. Guide fins are also slotted in to help keep the flightpath straight. The bow is made of bent Tree-cone wood with a cord of tightly woven Chomper skin. Used for long distance attacks.
Shark-dolphin skin paper: A sheet of skin used in place of paper. Has tiny, brown scales that can be scratched off to show the lighter colored skin underneath. Often kept in scroll form, wrapped around wood poles.
Woven net: Loosely woven strips of Shark-dolphin skin. Bound at the border by a rope of the same material. Used for catching large schools of prey. Tighter weave versions are used for holding and carrying large objects.
Stone Knife: Sharpened stone tied to a shaped wooden handle, sometimes engraved with the owner's name. Used as a multi-purpose tool. Possible uses include, cutting, jabbing, skinning, and prying.
Shell-swimmer scoop: Possibly their simplest tool, this is just a hollowed out shell. Used for digging, scooping, as a bowl, or sometimes as a scraper.
Neck-belt: One of their more complex tools, the Neck-belt is made of Shark-dolphin hide with sewn pockets all around for holding most of the above tools. The pockets are made seperate from the belt, then sewn on. They are fassened closed with a shaped bone button, with three holes of course ;). Allways inscribed with the owner's name, this is the most important object to a Naukal. It is worn just above the sholders for easy reach of the hands.

About finding fire on the shores, that's actually a little bit more difficult. The high oxygen in their atmosphere that allows them to live with copper-based blood also means that fires burn quicker. It's a spark, ignition, then WHOOSH! fire's out because it's fuel is burned up.

That's a good idea...They've got a buncha active volcanic island chains up north. They could use stone tongs and molds for shaping. They just have to get curious enough to ask "what happens when I put this stuff in the heat?" Lol, that should be easy enough ;)

glad to help, but i bet first they may find out what happens when you touch lava, then they get smart and use the tongs.

Sorry if it's kind of messy.

Skull: Lower jaw is not connected to the skull like ours is. It is basicly free-floating, held in place only by the powerful muscles that give the Naukal a bite force on par with our crocodiles. However, like crocs, they have minnimal jaw opening power. The numerous holes in the back of the skull are entry points for the sensory nerves running out to the tenticals
Neck: The small rib-like structures on the neck help support the gill system from colapse when on land. Like the true ribs, they are placed four to a vertebra.
Chest area: A thick, solid bone sternum protects the air sack system from crushing during dives and when on land. The three sets of dually-paired ribs connected to the sternum keeps the largest two support rays for their dorsal fin from being pulled down and breaking the spinal cord. The six rays, like the jaw, are free-floating and only connected by tendons and muscles to save weight and improve flexibility.
Arms: The two arms, their only limbs, connect to the main body via scythe shaped sholder blades, again free-floating. Other than that, they are the same as our arms.
Tail: After a fourth set of ribs to protect the gut, the rest of the body is all muscle used for swimming by pumping their tail up and down like a dolphin. when on land, they can also use their tails to stand on to reach higher, like a snake rising up to strike. They have to be careful, though. Less tail on the ground means a higher reach, but less stability. Falling onto their backs can proove fatal. The vennomous spine could be driven into the body. While they are immune to their own venom, the spine could become lodged inbetween two vertebra and cut the spinal cord, rendering their main form of locomotion paralised. They are unable to get up on their own due to the way their bodies are formed. Their arms can't reach above them or much to their sides. Also, being on their back poses the risk of all the water flowing out of their gills, drying them up, and permanantly damaging them. Laying there with it's gills out of commision, it's membranes drying out rapidly, and only it's air sacks gathering oxygen, it will suffocate in a matter of hours.

funny i saw the baby a day before it was posted on sporeplanet
also As anubians need a home prepare for invasion, with war new land would be very helpful, Anubians also have experience with underwater homes so there might be some interaction and that can help you advance faster. whaddaya say so if you agree I'll just start in this post.

* an Anubian ship appears over the Naukal homeworld(also what's the name of the planet)*
Captain"next one on the list, give me a scan"
Soldier 1"right away"*presses buttons in a fast and fancy way*"sir i have news"
Captain"what"
Soldier"there is life and water on the planet"
Soldier 2" that is news"
Captain"land us and report the coordinates back to base.
The ship turns towards the planet and begins to accelerate. soon it flashes over the night sky. the ship lands in a swamp on the edge of the sea.
Captain"get armed we don't know whats here"
*6 soldiers including he captain walk out, they give signals and split into 2 groups, one heads deeper into the swamp the other walk the shore line. one 1st class private, and soldiers 1 and 2 go on one team and go deeper in.
the captain and 3 and 4 in the other and begin walking in the dark with their flashlights on, the skim the water and nearby bushes for any life.

OOC: Yay! my first real RP! ANd their homeworld is called Naujek or "water home"

IC: ||under the water, the male Naukal, Nauani, Leader of the Swamp tribe, heard a loud rumbling whoosh like he's never heard before||
Nauani: What was that? Something new? Better go see. I hope it's not just another Tree-cone tipping over...
*peeks his head above the surface and sees the Anubian swamp team*
Nauani: ooooh! Realy realy new! I don't see teeth... Maybe they're friendly!
*begins walking up to the team*

||Meanwhile along the shoreline, a land-venture ritual is taking place and two young adult Naukal are taking their first trip onto land, Stalix, a female, and Acerklu, male||
Stalix: So this is what it's like up here...
Acerklu: Ya think the tatoo's gonna hurt?
Stalix: I hope not... Hey! What's that?
*both look in awe at the newcomers*
Stalix: cool! I discovered something! Now I'll be called Stalix, finder of life, like mother!
Acerklu: what do you mean "you"? I was here too! I should get some credit!
Stalix: I pointed them out!
Acerklu: but I'm gonna tell the others!
Stalix: no, Me!
Acerklu: me!!!
*begin nipping at each other in argument*
Title: Re: Naukal - My New Spore Creature

*swamp team*
*a twig snaps from the naukal and the team turns and the team and Naukal are confronted*
1st class"lufreac, dloh reif.."
soldier 1" tawh si ti"
soldeir 2" stel dnif tou"
*Soldier 2 begins to slowly approach the new creature with his weapon out*
(P.S the reason thier language is sticking out because well they don't expect it to know the meaning of a translator, if the Anubins were to find out if they have a language then they may be able to modify a translator to it's frequency. if your curious what they are saying they are just wondering what it is and soldier 2 wants to find out. if you want exact words you can reverse all the words, but some may not be completely translated that way, i don't want to get into the whole simple subject of the anubian language)

*shore team*
*soldier 4 hears noises coming from behind and turns to see 2 Nuakal behind him, he taps the other two and points at the two Naukal, the captain gives a hand signal and the the teams disappears in the bushes and moves in*

OOC: I know how to translate Anubian  ;)

IC:||swamp||

Nauani thinks: I don't like the way it's commin at me with that shiney thingamajig. maybe it's scared... A welcome might make it feel more welcome!
*Nauani raises up onto tail just enough to free his hands*
Nauani says: Many welcomings from the Naukal of the tribe of Water Earth! *does a circle with his left hand, then holds hand out palm up* We accept your comming with open eyes! *pauses and thinks* We are Frendly!
*goes into a submissive stance; eyes opened, mouth closed, arms folded, dorsal fin tight against the body, head down*

Stalix: I'll go back, but I refuse to forget...

Nauani: Yes, I am able to understand you. Uhhh... in case you didn't catch my welcome speech... Greetings, my name is Nauani leader of the Swamp tribe of Naukal. We are fiendly! *opens mouth slightly in a Naukal smile* One little question before we get on with the hellos... *points to the node on head* How does this thing work? I know I'm not going to be the only one to ask this.

*under the water, the two young Naukal have quite a story to tell*
Acerklu:... and they had these two big tails they stood on the ends of...
*Their mother, Tratauhek, a school teacher of wildlife, listens, while local tatooist, Cenacid, works on their markings*
Stalix: There were three of them but...
*Cenacid pauses her work*
Cenacid: Three? I wonder if this meeting of yours means something important
Tratauhek: Enough speculation fo now. Keep going, kids.
Stalix: Two of them left...
*just then, the Anubian soldiers splash into the water above them*
Acerklu: And there they are...
*Cenacid finishes her work*
Cenacid: Done! *looks up* awfully slow, aren't they? Shurely with three tails they would be faster than that.
Acerklu: Let's go up and see if they need any help.
*all four poke their heads above the surface several feet from the Anubian soldiers*

Nauani: Nauani is my name. If one want's to get specific, it's Nauani, son of Cakzaa and Guaide, current Leader of the northern half of the Swamp tribe, but that takes too many breaths to say for most occasions. Thank's for the compliments everyone!  ;D Took the two (my sister and I) of us 4 hours to draw, then another 3 to color it and add efects.

Up next, Naukal wildlife (you can see a bit of it at Spore Planet) and (hopefully) the continuation of the Naukal/Anubian first contact.

Naujek's Food chain. The arrows point to what the organism is eaten by. The dotted line indicates symbiosis. In the case of the Coral and the coral fish, the Corals provide the fish with easy food, while the fish will use themselves as bait to lure away predators that could damage the Coral while looking for prey. Note that the Naukal are at the top of the food chain.

I know. I'm gonna be gone for a couple of days for Christmas.

Nauani: Okay. *reaches the shoreline and both dive into the ocean, and after a few minutes of swimming, they reach the main city of the Swamp tribe*
*Three huge, white, coral like towers rise up from the ocean floor, arranged in a perfect equilateral triangle. three smaller spires lay inbetween. And swimming between them are hundreds of Naukal. Nauani picks out a group of six, two male, three female, and a young one*

Nauani: Nactra, Nauasni, Hehiyek, Kanzaa, I need the four of you to call a meeting as soon as possible. *the four nod and swim off, Nauani turns to the remaining female and young* Hello there, you two. *briefly locks jaws with the female* I'd like you to meet our visitor *gestures to the anubian, then turns to him* This is my bond-partner, Lyecae, and my son Xxasak *both say hello* Sorry we can't talk more, but I've got a lot of things to tell him about. *swims off with Anubian following*

I remember when the southern half was just starting out. I was one of the messengers who helped bring over the Tree-cone wood to trade with the Warm Sea tribe for three coral spires just like these. We helped chop down three of the smaller ones and then tied them up to a trio of Giant swimmers from traders up in the Arctic tribe. Took the 15 of us, arctic, warm sea, and swamp, 9 days to haul them around the swamp to the southern side. Giant swimmers are the only things tame and strong enough to carry the spires, but they're slow as can be. Two days to get there, with rest stops of course, then 9 whole days nonstop to get back. These spires were placed here the same way, but long before my time. We also trade wood for Dolphin shark skin and teeth from the Southern tribe. Basicly, if anyone has more of something than they need, they'll go trade for something they do need. The three smaller towers are where builders and traders set up their shops. That's also where we hold Meetings, which is where we're going now.

*Meanwhile, 500 or so Naukal are converging in the center triangle of the city, among them are Acerklu and Stalix.*
Stalix: A meeting about visitors? You don't think...
Acerklu: Probably is.
Stalix: Let's just hope they don't shine another light in our faces.

I have to be in on this!

After a long enough break, the Omic will be in a first person RP!

A ship orbited the planet.

"Unclassified sentience. Hmmm. Send someone down, if they are hostile WebSphere the planet."

"I'll send Grovy."

Grovik, a rare black Omic, was quite a new investigator, and had just heard he had to explore a planet alone, a wet one. He teleported down into a muddy shore.

"My beautiful fur is gonna stink..." He whispers, and began to, half-heartedly, call out loud to attract attention.
Title: Re: Naukal - My New Spore Creature

OOC: I'll set 'im down in the River tribe area, Swamp tribe's busy enough. ;)

IC: *Up on the muddy banks of the River tribe's territory, Degtau and Taulen, the tribe's chief life-finders (explorers), take notes on some young Tree-cones just beginning to form together. Suddenly, they hear a small noise off to their right, downriver.*

Degtau: Hmmm? *begins walking towards the sound* Nothing I've never heard that up on land.
Taulen: *listens a little closer* Kinda sounds like a Carak mating call. *Follows, scanning the ground with their eyelights*
Degtau: A half-dead Carak with bone disease. *another call* Scratch that. Bone disease and gum inflamation.

*they finally find the Omic, but stay a few feet away*

Taulen: Another scratch, tiny black Climb-fish with three tails, no fin or hiding colors, and an extra set of arms. *does a quick sketch on her shark skin paper, and takes a closer look* Being the single example of a new species, all possibly harmful tests, including value as a food stock, shall be held off untill a larger population is found.
Degtau: Does that include testing wether it can swim.
Taulen: Yes, due to risk of drowning.
Degtau: Then what can we do?
Taulen: Observe. Coral does not crumble under watchful eyes.
Degtau: *getting impatient* Can I at least go see if it's agressive?
Taulen: Oh, all right. Don't do anything that includes physical contact! Remember, eyes only!

*Degtau slides towards the Omic*

"Why do they always have to be bigger than us?" Grovy murmurs.

Instantaneosly, a chip in Grovy's brain picks up sentient brainwaves, scans them, alerts a second chip in his vocal chords that causes lasers to genetically modify them. Within a nanosecond, Grovy is not just being translated, he is SPEAKING the language!

"Hey there. I'm an Omic, from space. Are you harmful? You better not be because a yes would slowly kill you all."

*Taulen stares in shock, then turns around and calls to Degtau*

Taulen: Hey, Degtau! It just talked to me! What should I do?
Degtau: Just keep the conversation going, but be polite! I'll be there in a bit.
Taulen: Okay...*Turns back to the Omic* Hello. My name's Taulen. About the harmful question, from who's point of view are you talking from? If you are speaking from a tasty little fish's position, then that's a yes, but that's because we eat 'em. But towards you and the other Omics *pauses as Degtau slides up, then asks* Would it be Omic or Omics?
Degtau: I don't know! Just forget it.
Taulen: Kay. *to omic* But towards you and the others, no. We don't even hunt Caraks because we know they're smart and can think a little. Hurting another thinking being is just evil.

The Caraks are their evolutionary cousins, like other primates are to us. Like Chimps, Caraks are up there in terms of intelligence, just not sapient. (note the careful usage of words ;) )

*Degtau, while keeping some of her attention on the device, answers*
Degtau: We use Giant swimmers to carry anything too big for us to handle, and the Hunters will sometimes ride a Shark-dolphin for fun, but again, no. We don't see a need, though. All cities are within a day or two's swimming distance of each other.
Taulen: Somthing faster than a Giant swimmer's drifting along would be nice...

Physical map of Naujek.

Blue represents water, which covers most of the planet
Greens represent plant life. Being early in it's evolutionary development, Naujek has only a few places where plants can grow, allways near the equator and water.
Yellow represents sandy ground, either beach or desert in the south
Brown represents level, rocky ground
Light brown represents mountains
Pale blue represents ice, found up north in the arctic.

Tribal map of Naujek. Physical features have been greyed-out for ease of viewing.

Sedak:(Northern Earth) Large, icy continent. Native wildlife is limited to only Algae and Arctic sliders. Local tribe is the Arctic tribe. Exports Giant swimmers for transportation and Shark-dolphin products.
Naudak:(Northern Sea) Northern belt of the huge ocean that surrounds Naujek. Very large, open ocean, perfect for Giant swimmers and Shark-dolphins. Local tribe is the Cold Sea tribe. Exports Giant Swimmers for transportation and Shark-dolphin products.
Secak:(Small Earth) Small landmass with a sparse ring of tiny, volcanic islands. One of the few places where Tree-cones will grow. Local tribe is the Island tribe. Exports Tree-cone wood, Coralfish for food, and Shark-dolphin products.
Naucld:(Warm Sea) Large, relatively enclosed sea. Currents flowing through, carrying nutrients, allow the local corals to grow to huge heights. Concidered the origin point of Naukal civilisation. Local tribe is the Warm Seas tribe. Exports Coral spires for housing and Coralfish for food.
Naukan:(Large Sea) Equator belt of the huge ocean that surrounds Naujek. Shallow, warm water lets Spike and Cup corals flourish. Local tribe is the Coral Reef tribe. Exports other coral products and coralfish for food. Home to the Carak, the Naukal's Daytime hunter cousin.
Sekan:(Large Earth) Mid-sized continent with the Cenced (Air Jaw) mountain ranges funneling moisture west into a huge swamp known as Nause (Watery Earth). Despite the frigid mountains, the swamp contains over half of the total land life on the planet, ranging from Tree-cones to the speciallised sliders that live within. The northern edge of the swamp was the First contact point for the Anubians. Local tribe is the Swamp tribe. Largest exporter of Tree-cone wood. Also the gathering place of hundreds of thousands of Naukal on the 9 day Celebration of the Young every three years. Traditions include a Climb-fish egg hunt by the 6+ year old Naukal to give to the younger ones unable to go up on land.
Senari:(First Earth) So named because it is rumored to be the location of the first Naukal Land-venture, this mid-sized landmass has the largest river system on the planet, simmilar to our Amazon river. The river, Senau (Water on Earth) has three main tributaires, the scorces of which have a temple dedicated to one of the three elements: Air, Earth, Water. The muddy banks between the river and the jungle-like terrain served as the First Contact point for the Omic. Local tribe is the River tribe. Exports Tree-cone wood and stone arrowheads and knife blades.
Naulak:(Southern Sea) Southern belt of the large ocean surrounding Naujek. Like the Northern sea, the deep water makes a perfect habitat for Giant swimmers and Shark-dolphins, but isn't as cold due to the warm currents being funneled between the southern gap between Senari and Sekan. Local tribe is the Southern tribe. Exports Giant swimmers as transportation and Shark-dolphin products
Selak:(Southern Earth) Large desert-covered continent devoid of life. The warm currents from Naucld allow sparse patches of coral to grow along Sedey (Earth Spine). Local tribe is the Beach tribe. Exports Coralfis as food and offers sanding to smooth various objects.

Degtau: *eyes still fixed on the huge crate* Erm... sure. It's on the shoreline. *turns to Taulen* You stay here.
Taulen: Why?
Degtau: Four reasons; One, you need to guard it incase anything decides to go after it. Two, I wan't to introduce our guest to the Tribe leader without you getting hyper. Three, we still haven't finished our notes on the Tree-cones' growth. Fourth, a little inspection on the box could prove interesting. Satisfied?
Taulen: Oh allright. *begins studying the box*

Degtau: Allright.
*Degtau picks up the Omic and carries him downriver to the ocean. She then follows the coast a little to the north. Soon, the city is in sight. A trio of tall, pale, coral-like spires seem to grow up from the ocean floor, arranged in a perfect triangle. A shorter set lays between. Swimming around the towers are possibly hundreds of Naukal.*

Degtau: *to herself* OK, now where's he now *she swims down to the smaller triangle of spires, and the Omic sees that it is a bustling trading post, with Naukal with several different tattoos on their fins, and several with none at all. Degtau searches for someone among the crowd. She then spots someone and swims up to one of the many large holes riddling the Spires. The Naukal inside greets her*

Degtau: Hello, Zixrna. No time to chat. Have you seen Anenik?
Zixrna: *looks up* Yeah, he's stargazing again.
Degtau: Thanks.
*swims up to the surface where a male Naukal is floating, looking upwards at the star-dotted sky*
Anenik: Hmmm? *turns towards Degtau* Hello, Degtau. How are the Tree-cones growing?
Degtau: Good, but not now. We have a guest. *motions to the Omic*

To Alwayswatching:

Anenik: Sure, you can stay as long as you want. You and your people are welcomed here, and as soon news spreads, everywere else on Naujek.
Degtau: *to Anenik* We need to gather a team to go get a crate upriver. Grovy was kind enough to give us something to replace Giant swimmers for heavy lifting.
Anenik: *turns to Grovy* Thank you. I'll organise a group. How big is the crate?
Degtau: Very large. I'd say 39 Naukal to move it all the way back here.
Anenik: I'll call on 45, just in case. Better too many than too few. We'll meet you there. Which part of the river?
Degtau: About halfway up the Air branch. Don't worry, you'll know it when you see it, and Taulen's up there waiting for you.
Anenik: Thanks *swims back down to the city*
Degtau: *to Grovy* This might take a while. Would you like to see the rest of the city?

To a14gt:

Nauani: Oh, OK. You're the guest here. Besides, it'll take a bit for everyone to gather. *swims up to one of the taller spires* These tall ones are where the tribe goes during the day, when it's too bright to see. *finds a large hole and swims in. Inside is a long tunnel leading into a round open room* This is a typical room. One room to each bonded pair and their unbound children. When two Naukal bond, they move out and get their own room. *swims out, then heads down to the base of the northern-most small spire* This is the school, where the oldest of us teach the young ones things like language, math, scociety, and wildlife. Sometimes a mid-aged Naukal will talk to an elder for insight on a problem or to learn more on something. *swims up to the upper-half of the spire* Up here is where we keep our writings. Thoughts, Knowlage, anything the writer doesn't want forgotten. The writer could be anyone, from young Hunters to the elders. I have a few things in here about the building of the southern city, and probably a few more after this encounter *smiles at the Anubian and swims off again*

Nauani: Sure. There's another copy of The Anatomy of Caraks in the Coral Reef tribe city South of us. If you want, I can teach you how to read, but a little later, *glances at the huge crowd gathered below* we have to go to the meeting. Don't worry, it'll be quick. You probably won't even have to say anything. All it's for is to let the city know you're here. Then the news will be spread by our messengers to the other cities nearby. Then their messengers will spread it further and so on. By the end of this tide, your existance and intentions will be common knowlage.

OOC: I guess this would be a good time to introduce Naukal writing.

Like our writing, the Naukal alphabet is phonetic, meaning one symbol to a sound.
The top line is the letter in the Naukal alphabet, the bottom is the closest approximation in sound to our language. Naukal pronounce words letter by letter, paying no attention to the letters surounding. Naukal is pronounced by the natives (n-ah-uh-k-ah-l) as opposed to (now-call) or (no-call) as it is sometimes said by non-native speakers.

Nauani: Nah. The cities are close enough to each other to travel to in a day if you're a good swimmer. That's why the Messengers are allways younger Naukal with strong bodies. Besides that, there's still 23 days left in this tide.

"Wait a minute..."

Apparently from nowhere, a round, flat hologram appears. It's top and bottom are covered with MILLIONS of different Omic letters. Grovy starts rapidly typing, somehow distinguishing letters that look the exact same.

Degtau: Ok, then, let's start the tour. *swims down to the sea floor between the smaller spires* As you've allready seen, these small coral towers are where all the trading of the city happens. Each elder builder has a single room in the coral for storing materials and products. Younger builders gather these materials from the area around us. One becomes an elder builder by not being chosen as a Tribe Leader and instead continues his or her job as builder. You see, jobs are chosen by age.
First, we hatch and learn. Then, after we've grown strong enough, we head out and become Hunters, because, let's face it, kids have a lot of energy. Don't worry about their safety, there's nothing dangerous up at this time of night. When we grow old enough to travel on our own, we become Messengers, spreading news and trading between cities. Not too long after we first go on land, we become Young Builders, gathering materials for the Elder Builders and learning the trade, be it tattooing, knife making, sewing, bone shaping, or anything else. After we reach the accepted age for bonding, we can either be chosen as leader, like Anenik, or become Elder Builders and actually make the products we gathered the materials for when we were younger. The Leader makes the big decisions, calls meetings, welcomes guests, organises groups, and chooses the next Leader. After that, we all become Mediators, helping the Leader make decisions, settling conflicts, and spreading the Leader's announcements around the city. Then we finally become Teachers, like myself, devoting our lives to discovering new things and teaching the young. Lastly comes the Final Reunion Ceremony on the day before our death, where all our children and our bond-parther gather as they say one final goodbye. Then comes death. What hapens after that is a matter of debate among us. Some say nothing happens and we simply pass away. Others say that we go to a paradise down below. Still others say we are reborn as Caraks or as a star in the sky. I guess we can never know for sure because no one ever comes back to tell us. We have no evidence to support or disproove any of the four ideas.

Try to understand, there is a universe for each and every possibility, infinite universes, infinite more universes always splitting from another. He says that in one universe a dead person will still be alive, but have knowledge of dying. Pity we cannot yet control inter-universal travel."

Degtau: Hmmm... that's an interesting idea. I'll have to toss that one around at the next meeting, see what the other Teachers think. Speaking of which... *swims to the northern small spire* This is the city's school. The lower rooms are the classrooms, where teachers give lectures and help the young learn about things like Scociety, Math, Language, Health and it's sister subject, Biology. Both subjects deal with bodies, Health just focuses on Naukal ones. Teaching methods vary, but what the young learn is usually the same. Even after schooling, older Naukal will sometimes ask a Teacher for his or her insight on a problem or to confirm what they have discovered is indeed new. The upper rooms are where we keep all the documents writen in the area and sometimes copies of documents written in other cities. One doesn't have to be a Teacher to have a document saved. In fact *swims into one of the tunnels and comes out with a couple of pages of shark-skin sewn together* This story was written by a young Hunter about an adventure with a talking Carak named *reads a little bit* Hakani. Fictional of course, but a nice bedtime story for the young.

"Interesting... I'd be interested to study your technology though. Are you familiar with electricity? Fire? Hydroelectric energy?"
Title: Re: Naukal - My New Spore Creature
Post by: Darth Grievi on December 29, 2006, 02:05:39 pm
Degtau: I don't know about those other two things you said, but I know about fire. It's a big problem for the builders who use wood. Diring a bad storm, sometimes there will be a spark from the lightning, then there's a huge WHOOSH and the fire starts up. We usually try to put it out with water before it burns up all the Tree-cones. If we don't catch it in time, it'll keep burning untill it runs out of fuel. Then we have to import seed pods to replant the forest. About the technology, these coral spires don't grow here. We cut down dead ones from the Warm Seas and use those slow Giant Swimmers Taulen mentioned earlier to bring them over here. For stuff we build, we can have a look around the trading post and see what the others are making and bringing in, because the only things I have with me are my neck-belt *tugs at it a bit, then opens two of the pockets and pulls out the contents* some paper, my coral writing quill, and my knife, just in case. *they swim to the other two spires and have a look at the various tools and ornaments being traded around* There's some spears coming in from the Island tribe... Some nets from up north... Bone needles, buttons, and decorations from the Beach tribe, and oh! Hold on a second. *swims to one of the shops and comes back with a greenish bowl with etched in patterns* A beautiful Shell-swimmer bowl for back home *stuffs it into the Neck-belt's largest pocket* anyway, over there is a new shipment of paper for the schools, and some bow string and syringe bulbs from the beach, too. Hmmm... the only things I don't see are nets, rope, and string. Or syringes either, but that can be expected because no one's doing a Land-venture tonight. Land... I nearly forgot. If there is't anything else you want to see, we should meet up with the moving team upriver.

*the pair swim back upriver to find the team just getting the crate into the river, among them are Taulen and Anenik*

Degtau: Good, we're not to late to help. *walks over and helps push the crate all the way in*
Anenik: Ok everyone, let's stop and take a little rest. The hardest part's over.

*the team pauses and goes into the water to rest and prepare for the next stage of the moving*

Degtau: Taulen, did you learn anything new about the crate?
Taulen: Not much. There's a bunch of stuff inside, but I can't figure out what.
Degtau: Don't worry. We'll figure that out when we get it back and open it.
Taulen: How?
Degtau: Good question. *looks at Grovy*

Degtau: Oh...
Anenik: Ok everyone. Let's get this thing to the shoreline.

*the group reforms around the crate and begins to push it down the river. with the current helping them, they get it to the shore in no time*

Anenik: Nearly home. One more rest then we'll start the final push.

*after one last rest, the Naukal team carries the crate to the center of the city, where Anenik makes a speech*

Anenik: Attention, my fellow Naukal! This crate is a gift from Grovy of the Omic! The opening of which signifies a new era of friendship between our peoples. Those of you who are visiting from other cities, when you head home tell everone you know about this momentous event!

Degtau: *to herself* Boy, he sure knows how to make a big deal out of something.

Anenik: Degtau, Taulen, the first of our people to make contact, and Grovy, the first Omic visitor to our city, please come up here and help me open the crate.
*the three swim up and break open the crate*

In the box, there is a wide selection of sealed charts, scripts and blueprints, there are examples of rocks needed to make special hulls sealed in watertight containers, there are instructions, actually written in Naukal script (put together from Taulen's knowledge of the writing, as when Grovy saw him and scanned his mind for the language, he also transmitted writing). There are handy maps pointing out minerals all over the planet, model engines and vehicles, and a small electricity generator.

*The Teachers of the tribe swim up and begin to inspect the contents.*
Taulen: *studying the instructions* It'll take about a tide to spread the news and begin gathering materials. I'd say the first of these will begin production in about 2 tides, but then the current will be helping us along.
Anenik: *nods, then turns to Grovy* How can we thank you for this gift?
Title: Re: Naukal - My New Spore Creature

Post by: Darth Grievi on December 29, 2006, 04:20:11 pm

Quick update before I leave:

Vision range of the Naukal. Note: vision and eyelight ranges extend farther than shown. Lantern and tenticals removed for ease of viewing.

Vision Naukal eyes see a nearly 180 degree arc to each side to look for prey. They have binocular vision to the front. Vertical range is the same as humans. They are color-blind to blues, but very sensetive to reds, yellows, and greens. Because of this, the word for "blue" in Naukal is the same as the word for "grey". Naukal have developed an unusuall way to cope with the vision problems that come with a water creature trying to see on land. Normally, they would be near-sighted, as air doesn't bend light as much as water does. They solve this by using their third eyelid, like those found on sharks and various reptiles, like a set of glasses. The thickened, clear membrane bends the light the same way a layer of water would, improving the Naukal's vision.

Eyelights The light-producing organs below the eyes let off a beam of red light, which is used by the Naukal like a pair of searchlights. Since red light is filtered out in the deep ocean, creatures who live down there often have red pigments which makes them appear black in their native habitat. They also don't bother trying to see the red light and have lost the red-sensing cells in their eyes. So the beams from the eyelights not only highlight their prey, but are invisible to the fish. When not needed, a flap of skin moves up and covers it, like an eyelid.

Lantern The single lantern above their heads has a dual purpose. The first is to lure fish into catching distance by appearing to be a small, aggitated cloud of the bioluminecent plankton that draws the deep-water fish to the surface in the first place. This isn't used as much anymore. The other function is to help identify individuals by slight differences in color and brightness, in addition to tentical banding, voice, and overall facial features.

I'm leaving for the weekend to celebrate New Years. I might post once or twice, but no major updates untill Monday

I'm back, partially to bump and partially to ask a question...

If I had another sapient species in the same system as my Naukal, would it be better to create a seperate thread because they're unlikely to interact with the Naukal, or do both species in the same thread because they're in the same solar system?  ???

Eudrial"as you can see the place is perfect for the taking, defences are weak and by the looks thier communcation is still primative"
Blas"do i informed the general"
Eudrial"he is far to busy for this, we can take this by ourselves"
Cabtrol" and how we are still small compared to the planet getting the word will take a while"
Eudrial" control would be gradual, if we move through the villiges our word can spread"
Blas"now all we need is something to breck it to them without getting our heads ripped of"
Eudrial"they seem nice, maybe we can..convince them with power or technology"
Cabtrol"yea that can easily work, no what to impress them with"
*all three think*
Eudrial"an E-9 would be far to hard to get"
Blas"how about the ship, just having something floating would baffle them"
Cabtrol"now..how do we go about this"
*all three sigh and continue to think*

*Nauani quietly calls over one of his mediators*
Nauani: This is starting to get me nervous. Now there are three of them.
Mediator: So? what's wrong with that?
Nauani: Nothing obvious, anyway. But think about it, how many messengers do you send to give news to a city?
Mediator: one.
Nauani: Exactly. It suggests they have more in mind than saying hi. I don't know what, though.
Mediator: Maybe it's just to gather more information.
Nauani: Maybe, but this "secret meeting" *nods to the Anubian's spire* I think they don't want us to know something.
Mediator: They might just be unsure of wether to come to the meeting.
Nauani: Either way, keep alert, and send out those messengers early. Tell them and the rest of the city that we have visitors and we're not too sure about their intentions, but keep that last bit in code. Say that they "will be greeted by the two lanterns". The other leaders will get it.
Mediator: Right away. *swims off*

Naukal Wildlife: Part 1

Chomper (Kancednacin) Small, angler-fish like. Has large mouth and elastic stomach and skin used for bow-strings and syringe bulbs.
Tatoo-squid (Alik) Filter feeder. Swims by flapping the webbed arms like a stingray. Has an ink sack that shoots the dark liquid out of the top syphon. Ink is extracted harmlessly and used for tatooes.
Light Fish (Sninacin) Top predator of the deep ocean. Main food of the Naukal.
Shell Swimmer (Cakalni) Small, clam like animal. Swims by rowing it's arms. Filter feeder. Has a larger, whale sized cousin that feeds in the surface waters. Shell is used as a scoop or bowl after the animal is eaten.
Snapper (Klualni) Crab like scavenger. Bright red to hide in the deep where red light is dim. Sometimes eats live small fish.

Naukal Wildlife: Part 2

Swamp Slider (Nausegan) Large herbivore. Has scoop-shaped claws for digging up roots and plants to eat. Has an Arctic cousin that does the same for snow-algae. It's horns and spikes are used for fending off Spiny Sliders and Naukal.
Spiny Slider (Deyraxegan) Arborial pack hunter. Is colored to blend in with the ribbons of brown on a Tree cone. It's main prey is the Climb-fish, but will attack Swamp Sliders and even young Naukal.
Climb-fish (Senicaenacin) Small herding sap-eater. Has tubed tounge to suck up sap of the Tree cone. The first animal to develop a insulative body covering. Feather-like structures cover the body. Has a prehensile tail for extra grip. Like most animals on Naujek, it has blue blood which shows vividly on the head crest. Is crypticly colored like it's cousin, the Spiny Slider. Lives in communial nests of up to 60 individuals in large, old Tree cones. A greenish paste of partially digested sap mixed with saliva lines the nest. Breeds 3 times a year. The round eggs are gathered every 3 years during the Celebration of the Young and fed to the younger Naukal that are unable to go onto land.
Lantern Bug (Tralni) Small biting insect. The Lantern bug is highly luminecent. Feeds on dead plants and animals, young Tree cones, and sometimes even live animals if food is scarce enough.
Tree cone (Seni) Large land plant. Made up of several smaller ones grown together. Home to Climb-fish and Spiny Sliders.
