Title: Dragon Quest IX for the DS!
Post by: PHI-1618 on December 11, 2006, 10:48:04 pm
Yes.

It's true.

The DS owns Japan. Whole.

This (http://ds.ign.com/articles/750/750590p1.html), Sony, is the herald of your handheld's doom.

HOLY SHIITE!

That is amazing!

I remember rumors a while back circulating that this would be coming out exclusively on Wii...

Just...wow.

 :o

EDIT: Here's another link to the news: http://gonintendo.com/?p=10248

Mulitiplayer co-op support! Yay!

Today is a good day.

Not for Sony fans. You should read the uproar coming out of NeoGAF. It's hysterical.

Only one comment has come out of the GAF thread about this that's worth a tick: "Let's see Nintendo make enough DS's now!"
That's no joke. Their poor factories are going to be destroyed by trying to keep up with this.

Haha! No kidding! I cracked up when pictures of the Wii launch line came in from Japan, and some of them were in fact waiting in line to get the latest shipment of DS'! It's insane!

The Dragon Quest series rivals that of the Final Fantasy series as far as popularity in Japan (it's less popular than Final Fantasy elsewhere). Imagine Final Fantasy XIII coming to the DS, and that's basically the magnitude of effect it has in Japan right now.

This is going to be huge.

From what I've heard, Dragon Quest is the biggest game franchise in all of Japan, even bigger than Final Fantasy. It's less so here, I think, because Enix didn't have quite the international connections that Square had. Hooking up with Square opened up DQ8 to the world and I'm hoping the series will continue to grow in popularity everywhere considering it's on the DS now.

The biggest gaming franchise in Japan on the biggest gaming hardware in Japan currently. My god. I'm surprised Mt. Fuji didn't explode when they announced it.

I remember in a show Steve did a while back (during his review of Dragon Quest XIII) that Dragon Quest is in fact more popular than Final Fantasy in Japan.

But my goodness! I'm still at a loss for words!

GASPE!

Not much of the game is shown, but you can see a snippet of it on the DS. Wow, the game is in 3D, and, from what I can see, it looks great!

And yes, it looks fantastic considering it's 4-player Wifi.

Wow. This game is going to be amazing.

As exciting as this is for the success of the DS,perticularily in Japan, I'm also just happy that I'll be able to play a new Dragon Quest game on the DS!

Can't say I've ever been a fan of Dragon Quest, it always seemed a little too generic for me, but it's great to see more RPG's like this coming to the DS.
And yeah, this is some serious bad news for Sony, their only exclusive left now is Final Fantasy and even then it's only a matter of time now.

Hard to believe actually that Pilot and I have been conversing this long without it becoming an all-out brawl.

I don't understand. I never heard of this game. But seeing how it's number 9 of the series, it must be. =)

The short of it is that Dragon Quest is the best-selling videogame series in Japan. New releases of the game are treated as national holidays and most people get the day off from work. It is bigger than Final Fantasy in that country but, due to Enix's limited international reach, hasn't found the same level of audience as FF has the world over. Dragon Quest VIII for the PS2 was a big step in the right direction for the series becoming accepted as a power in the RPG market in the Western world. [It is, in fact, very awesome.]

Let me find something to compare it to: Imagine if the newest part of the GTA series -- GTA IV, for example -- were to be released for a handheld rather than a console. Or if the next installment of the Mario or Zelda series were foregoing console release and coming out on a handheld. In other words, this is a HUGE announcement.

For further info, clicky here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Quest).

I find it gratifying that we've both accepted that we're hard to get along with and, thus, get along with one another to the alienation of other posters on here.

There are a lot of mario and zelda games on handhelds. =) But point well made. But it doesn't seem much like a game I'd get into methinks. I don't know.

and GTA has Liberty City and Vice City stories on Handheld. A better analogy would be say Halo for DS.
Title: Re: Dragon Quest IX for the DS!

It's kind of hard to compare to here, as the most popular games over here are pretty power-heavy. Basically, it is like, what PHI said, the next GTA coming exclusively to DS. Or Madden. Or Halo.

It's a bit hard to draw comparisons for over here, but it's somethin' like that.

I've never played a main Dragon Quest game, but I have played Rocket Slime for DS, and it was quite fun. I'm looking to pick up Dragon Quest VIII. It's only $20! That is a hell of a deal for the tens of hours of gameplay you will get out of it.

Title: Re: Dragon Quest IX for the DS!
Post by: PHI-1618 on December 12, 2006, 09:35:00 pm
I think the part of my point being missed (and I'm to blame for not emphasizing it) is this: Imagine if those franchises were suddenly to go handheld ... ONLY. In other words, there is no console-based equivalent. The next GTA only for the PSP or DS, not on the PS2, PS3, 360, etc. Would that be considered significant for many gamers?

Apparentally so. (http://blog.wired.com/games/2006/12/dragon_quest_on.html) Dragon Quest sells more copies in Japan alone than Final Fantasy games sell worldwide. To say this is a huge announcement is an understatement, whether you are personally interested in the game or not; it has a very far-reaching impact on the handheld war and is a potential sign of where S-E is going to be heading with their biggest RPG series, now and in the future. Final Fantasy is a lock for the PS3; it's on its way for the platform. But S-E has also said that they're not going to bring all their franchises to Sony's system. Kingdom Hearts and Dragon Quest have been up in the air since then as to which systems they would end up being on. Backing Nintendo with DQ on its handheld was a very interesting move since that doesn't negate the Wii as a very possible platform for S-E's other major franchise, Kingdom Hearts.

Also: For those of you still unitiated into the DQ gaming experience, I would highly, highly recommend at least renting DQ VIII. It really was a remarkably old-school, fun, and engrossing game; and if it weren't for FF XII and Paper Mario: TYD, it would have easily been my favorite RPG of the generation. DQ IX is going to vary quite a bit from VIII but I've high hopes for the game considering the exact same crew behind VIII is working on IX.

Well, it was my favourite game of last year and I got over a hundred hours of gameplay out of it. What's more, I'm looking forward to doing it all over again. You have a treat in store.

I'm right there with you, man. I have three ongoing games in DQ VIII. I'm building each character with different weapon specialties just to see how they all fare, and they're all enjoyable in their own way. Damn, it's a good game. Just wish you saw the Puppeteer enemies more often; I laugh on every single one.

I've heard a DS cart could be created that would hold upwards of 2gb, though the largest currently in production is 1gb. If that's true, I'm not surprised by it being able to hold the game. But the graphics are amazing all the same. Cel-shading FTW.

So, it would appear Akira Toriyama (the character designer for DQ VIII, Chrono Trigger, and creator of Dragonball) is thrilled about Dragon Quest coming to the DS. (http://www.dsfanboy.com/2006/12/20/akira-toriyama-wrote-a-letter-on-dqix/)

For those who are unable to go to the site due to work firewalls, here's what he had to say:

Quote from: Akira Toriyama
Congratulations on the announcement of Dragon Quest IX!

So the next Dragon Quest is coming to the DS! That was a surprise to me. Surprised you too, right?

But this is really good news to me. I had gradually been losing my enthusiasm, but this makes me feel as if we'll be able to make a bit of a return to the good old days. "Wow!" I thought, "Horii's the man! He's really done it!"

This may just be the nostalgic ramblings of an old man, but back then I really enjoyed making concept art for games. I feel I can proudly say "now those were games!" This time I want to absolutely give it my all to produce fun, simple and impactful new designs.

I'm getting on in my years, but for just a little bit longer, I'm going to give it my best!

Expect big things!

Don't ever doubt the DS. Did you really think the DS had bad graphics. Can't look as impressive as PSP graphics, but DS games are a LOT more fun. PSP has a couple good games. But there are a lot of great DS games.

PHI: This is a big one, sonny get the net.

While the video is quite nice, it is still nothing compared to most of the things the PSP can do, from a graphical standpoint.

And like I said before I can't see this making that big of an impact on the DS's sales. In my mind, most people in Japan who are gamers probably already own a DS or are gonna buy one in the very near future. All the same, the DQ series has never really that big of an impact in the west. I can't remember if it was Steve who said it, but Dragon Quest didn't sell that well in the US, and I can't imagine it doing much better in Europe.

Of course this is just me talking. I could and probably am wrong, but that is some thing time will show.

You are still not seeing why this is important. That's fine. It has little to nothing to do with the game itself; it has to do with the message it sends other Japanese developers. You don't put the biggest game in Japan on a handheld without every single game executive hearing about it and wondering whether it's a clear notice for them to put more of their games on the system too.

I'm still trying to figure out how anything sells 300,000 units in a week in Japan. Jesus, the DS is huge there.

There have been rumors of using something similar to the Memory Pack that was used for the N64, something that would fit into the GBA slot in the DS and enhance its on-board memory. Personally, I doubt we'll see a device like that brought out before this game hits, if there are any plans to bring one out at all. Most indications seem to place DQ IX as having a 1st or 2nd quarter release in Japan.
