Just a tip, save as PNG if you can. It's much much better than JPG and you lose no quality.

Call me stupid, but i couldn't figure out how to scale/rotate/etc. But good job, very creative

Also, a mirror:

Go ahead and set something up on the wiki for it if you wish, but theres probably no need for it.

Press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard, then go into a photo editing program (such as MS Paint) and paste it in there. Then just crop your image to the size you want and save it as a .PNG or .jpg file. Then upload it to a photo hosting site, copy the link they give you, and paste it in here! Hope that made sense, good luck.

[li]The 'pointy toes'-foot, when placed in the 'Back', doesn't go fully behind the same foot placed in the 'Front'; [/li]
[/list]

You can set the layer with 1 to 9. 5 being the body and 1 to 4 being in front and 6 to 9 behing behind the body. Think of them as putting sheets of paper over each other.

This one is not turning out how I wanted it to. I like the way i have the wings and I like the little legs i put on it but for some reason the color editor thinks they're horns but I want to keep it's stinger. Also I can't get the head right, it's to lizard looking for my liking. I just put on the jetpack for fun because everything else is bugging me.

No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century
that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own:
(http://usera.imagecave.com/flash/martian.bmp.jpg)

then, later in 'the war of the worlds'

And this Thing I saw! How can I describe it? A monstrous tripod, higher than many houses, striding over the young pine trees, and smashing them aside in its career; a walking engine of glittering metal

here you see a martian assembling the flying machine in the pit, while red weed covers up every scrap of ground.
(http://usera.imagecave.com/flash/assembling.bmp.jpg)

then, later in the war of the worlds the flying machine is spotted:

Something rushed up into the sky out of the greyness--rushed slantingly upward and very swiftly into the luminous clearness above the clouds in the western sky; something flat and broad, and very large, that swept round in a vast curve, grew smaller, sank slowly, and vanished again into the grey mystery of the night

hey everone, this is my first post here, possibly my first post to a forum in over 5 years... cant remember but i thought it was so interesting whats going on here i'd give it a go.... this was my first creature using creature editor 3. It was my attempt to recreate the creature from the now famous will wright spore demo movie which is at places like google video. let me know if you recognised it before you read this lol. its supposed to be the creature from the part in the demo where he moved out of the water. i made this from memory so its probably not even close but i thought it might be funny to try to recreate a creature from spore in this Creature Editor program.

Daxx's 10 step guide to posting pictures:

1. Go into the creature editor and create your creature.
2. Press the Print Screen button (on most keyboards, it's at the top somewhere). This will take a screencapture, and put it on the clipboard.
3. Open your favourite image editing program (or Paint, whichever).
4. Paste in your copied pic.
5. Crop down (this is important, we don't need or want to see your entire screen).
6. Save as a PNG (or something else, but PNG is best).
7. Go to http://imageshack.us (http://imageshack.us) or some other hosting site (Imageshack is good).
8. Host the pic, following the instructions on the site.
9. Take the Forums Code/BB Code that it gives you and copy it.
10. Paste that code into a message, and post. Voila, you're done.

Just link to this one in future.

You'll be lucky. Do you have any idea how much effort went into making this in the first place, let alone the effort that would be involved in magically turning it into a flash game? Not everyone is a full time game designer, and making a decent program in flash is not the easiest of things to do.

Why not? If you describe the problem, we should be able to help you. Did you follow the instructions?

You know, this could make for a useful new feature.

Can games in Gamemaker take screencaps? If so, a feature to incorporate in the future might even be to get the image pre-cropped and dumped in a folder in a decent format. Or just a screencap to the clipboard, whichever is more practical.

so is the creature editor 4.0 released? if so I'd be rapped!

Nope, just 3.0. 4.0 is who knows when, Huggs has stopped work on it right after 3.0 was released.

I don't understand the 1st question.

And for the 2nd question I drew most of the art (aka the parts and backgrounds) while Huggs did all the programing.

Noticed that when you pressed an object that is on top of another they both get pressed, let me fix thath for ya:
Make a variable called HAP for the part object, assuming you didn't make one for each sprite ;) and make it 0
Quote
HAPS = 0 //the current object
HAPS2 = 0 //whether or not it's on top
for (I=0;I<instance_count;I+=1)
{
HAPS = instance_id//make HAPS the current object
if (HAPS.object_index = object0.object_index)//if current object is the right object type
if (HAPS.HAP = 1)//if current object is pressed
{
    {
    if (HAPS2 = 0)//if none of the objects has been proccesed make it the first, on top
        {
        HAPS2 = 1
        }
    if (HAPS2 = 1)//if the on top object has been indentified make this not pressed
        {
        HAPS.HAP = 0
        }
    }
}
}

Replace object0 with the right object and put this in left click pressed event, and beneath it drag and drop a variable change of "HAP = 1".
In left click released put HAP = 0 as drag and drop code again.

in step put, as drag and drop "if HAP = 1" "Jump to given position, X=mouse_x,Y=mouse_y"

then you don't have to press space either.

You could also give me the source and I will work it out for you :)

If you, and please say you didn't, made an object for each sprite, copy one of your part object and name it part_object, then put this under the buttons, when they're clicked.
Quote
PART = instance_create(mouse_x,mouse_y,part_object)
PART.sprite_index = sprite_index
PART.HAP = 1

Wow!  That is really smart.  The placement thing.

I tried a similar thing, and I did a loop that looked like this:
Set variable G to 0
repeat next action (block) instance_number(Edit_ParentPart) times
      set variable Pid to instance_find(Edit_ParentPart,G)
      if Pid is not equal to id
            if Pid.L is equal to 1
                  if Pid.depth is smaller than depth
                  set variable Move to 0
                  exit this event
            set variable Move to 1
      if Pid is equal to id
            set variable Move to 1
      set variable G relative to 1
if Move is equal to 1
      set variable Px to x
      set variable Py to y
      set variable Ax to mouse_x-x
      set variable Ay to mouse_y-y

Even though your way only uses a code block and mine spans several events, I'm still using this way.  ;D

(Just don't ask me what the variables are.  I forget)

You see, all instances have certain variables, such as speed, direction, rotation, position, etc.

But the problem the machine has is what happens when there is more than one object, and you only want to influence that one.  For that you have the id.  The id of the instance is some stupid number like 200334213421343214, or something like that.  You can say stuff like instance_find(Object,n), giving you the id of a certain object, wherin this object was the nth one to be created.  Why have this silly number, you ask?  Well, if you do, you can change any variable in that particular instance (An instance is one of the object) by just writing id.variable in the variable editor thing.

(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff86/jarnomiedema/IceDemon.jpg)

This is the Ice Demon. It is the most efficient hunter of the icy planet of Dardiria. Whereas most creatures on this planet are covered in heavy fur to protect them from the blizzards and icy rains, the Ice Demon thrives in this weather and, due to its high body temperature, can outrun almost anything. Due to its high profile, it often lies down in the snow, allowing itself to be covered by it, waiting for a herd of herbivores to move by, on their treks to the milder climated equator. Its whiskers at the sides of its mouth and behind its legs can detect nearby movement in the snow, whereas their 'feelers' at the tops and backs of their heads allow them to sense nearby heat sources and minute vibrations on the ice for miles around. They don't posses noses, but their three eyes are incredibly sharp and more than make up for that loss. Normally they hunt in matriarchiacally lead packs of up to twelve individuals, where each individual takes a specific role in the dividing and hunting down of other animals. They are currently the forerunners on the road to evolve into sentient creatures.

I'll see what else I can come up with, with the help of this great tool!

Title: Re: Creature Editor 3.0
Post by: jarnomiedema on October 09, 2007, 01:49:03 pm
Sure! I searched Google Image using keywords related to snow ('snow', 'snowstorm', 'blizzard', 'snowflakes', etc.) and textures / photographs.. Unfortunately I can't seem to find the images I used specifically (and I didn't back it up on my PC)..

Anyway, I uploaded the image I used in the layer, right here: http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff86/jarnomiedema/Snowstorm-1.jpg (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff86/jarnomiedema/Snowstorm-1.jpg)

If you use it in Photoshop, be sure to make it into a seperate layer with an 'Overlay', 'Screen' or 'Soft Light' quality to it, which will blot out the black background and pull the white snowflakes into the foreground.. Good luck!

I wonder if there will ever be a CE4, you could use bones on drawings to rotate parts etc, and use vector drawing so you can scale the parts, etc. And you could also tell me to go to hell and do it myself, lol.
Title: Re: Creature Editor 3.0
Post by: Yokto on December 15, 2007, 04:50:25 am
Well is easy to talk about it but hard to do it. The ability scale the image without loss would be nice. Real time rendered shadows would be nice to. Lots of things would be nice to add. But is not that easy. I have just a superficial idea how to make real time shadowing and no good idea how to implement vectors.

PS: to use Real time shadows would mean that we have to redo every part.

Parts kinda get grainy when you enlarge them too much.

I was thinking we could vectorize the parts in Flash or something.

They need to have things like shadows edited out too. Shadows are way too restrictive.

Also, some parts need to be made which are much more generic. It seems that Hydro was designing parts with creatures in mind, which shouldn't be how it works.
Title: Re: Creature Editor 3.0
Post by: Yokto on April 26, 2008, 09:13:55 am
Well the original idea i had was to have real time rendered shadowing (Using bump making and a volumetric hidden texture map.) But is very hard to do. I toyed around with the idea of having several prerenderd shadows for every part but this takes a lot of time to do and makes the program a lot bigger. (Sadly i do not thing i have the originals left.)

Using vector base graphics would also be cool but require extensive modifications not only to software but also completely new parts.

Hello mr. Nice Guy.

It's called sarcasm, calling jerks to the people who made the editor you're using asks for a dosage of sarcastic replies :)

Also, I was thinking of making an editor with Actionscript 3.0 (which would use vector parts), but with the actual Spore editor so close to release I don't know if it's worth it :\

People just can't get a good joke, I didn't give it a butt (actually forgot <_<), it's supposed to use both the limb that is hanging in the middle and that other mouth to eat. So, I don't see how a creature with 4 legs, 2 mouths and 2 eyes can disgust you, but if they do, don't play Spore :P

What the hell? Now just because it's in the middle of it's body (actually at the back) and hanging down it's a penis? YOU disgust me, with your pervert thoughts!

First of all, the thing hanging down is it's neck, at the end there is a suction pad for it to eat small creatures, and those tentacles help it grab the creatures. Then it has another mouth on the front which is mainly used to scare predators and eat from small bushes (it's omnivore)...

Read my post. But just to make things clear. I did not make any part. I only shades some parts. (Most of the credit should go to Huggs and Hydro.) But i will defend the product and any part that is in the editor is also approved by me.

As far as i know we have no official reproductive organs. If you see any then it is your imagination. The Game do not have any filter and what you upload on Internet is your responsibility. This tool can be used for making provocative images but we do not take any responsibility for that.

Nice. Is the upper skin texture used for hiding from flying predators?
Title: Re: Creature Editor 3.0
Post by: DarkDragon on April 27, 2008, 09:53:41 pm
Yes, it hides in the water which makes it look like it's just leaves floating in there (the green spots).
It uses those "feathers" on the legs as a mating display, the darker the better. Only the males have the horn which is used to fight for a female.
The back legs and feet help it run faster than most creatures on its planet while the front limbs are used both as legs and arms (it can stand on the 2 back feet for short periods of time to grab fruits from trees which it eats with it's mouth on the front.
Those 2 small apendages coming out of the front arms/legs are used to taste unknown plants or bugs, if it comes accross something that it doesn't recognize but wants to eat, it uses them to test for possible venoms, the appendages function like a sepparate digestive system and if there is venom in the food they will die (but can grow back), it assures the creature doesn't eat something poisonous.
The limb hanging down from the middle is used to eat small animals and the tentacles aid it in catching those said animals and holding them down until it eats them to death.
They can find each other at night using those orange circles along it's "back" which glow and emmit little buzzing sounds (which is how they comunicate).

It evolved near beaches and lakes, there are different variations of it. The two main ones are this one (that adapted to live in forests and near swamps or lakes) and another one that adapted to live near beaches. The other species differs in coloration and size (it's yellowish and slightly smaller), they also don't posess the 2 poison safety apendages which are used by this one mainly on plants while the beach species evolved to eat only animals so it's missing the front mouth as well as those 2 apendages.

I might apply for NG with it :x

Senitent raptor like creatures. This particular one has a prosthetic leg to replace the one he lost in a war. The red feathers are for display; they stand up when the creature feels threatened or angry, or as a warning. His weapon delivers electrical currents into its target.

Deinoquabrachis ("Terrible Four Arms")
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w32/Logan_Felipe/Deinoquabrachis.png)

This huge predator inhabits the thick forests of Arborfrost. It uses its large "hands" and strong limbs to push itself through densely forested areas, similar to the way a mole moves through dirt. The purple crest is only found on males, and serves as a courtship display. To help find prey in the dark depths of the forests, it uses heat sensor pits along its mouth to detect heat signatures. it walks on its armored knuckles when on the forest floor.

Lobstican
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w32/Logan_Felipe/Lobstican.png)
A flying creature from the aquatic planet of Avocea. They share a recent common ancestor with the Crustaciaves, Crab-like creatures that live on the bottom of the planet's massive ocean. Both creatures are sentient. At one time, Avocea was a planet of small islands strewn across several shallow seas. This changed when an asteroid became trapped in the planet's orbit, wreaking havoc on the planet's tides and weather patterns. For months at a time, the sea levels began rising due to the massive moon's affect on the tides, flooding the islands (which stood barely above sea level). In order to survive, the ancestrial amphibious species split into two groups; those who wished to build cities beneath the sand while the water raged above them (the ancestors of the Crustaciaves), and those who built towers constructed of a cement-like mixture to live above the waves(the ancestors of the Lobsticans). Lobsticans use their eight wing-limbs and 12 large tail feathers for flight and display. The first limb pair is armed with pincer-like hands that can be used to manipulate objects in their environment. They use their beak pouches to catch fish as they dive off of their sandcrete city towers. Having lost their gills millenia ago, they cannot breath underwater like their ancestors. Sensors on their heads can detect smells, sounds, the direction of air currents, and vibrations in both the air and the water.

Hexacuropod (Six legged manatee)
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w32/Logan_Felipe/HexacuropodGiga-1.png)
The Hexacuropod is a large terrestrial herbivore. It has two thigh spikes to protect its flank, a thick hide, and quill-like fur covering its spiny neck vertebrae. They are grazers, and use multiple stomachs to digest the plant matter they ingest. They have a good sense of smell, and their sensitive whiskers can determine texture and temperature. They live in large herds. When they are confronted by a predator, they make a circle around their young, their heads facing the center of the circle, leaving their thigh spikes and strong, flukeless tail exposed to ward off said predator. To be able to detect their adversary when in this situation, they use a second pair of small, internal ears located where the tail meets the hip and sensitive hairs on the tail itself to determine its location. They are docile, gentle creatures, and if alone, will usually attempt to flee rather than fight if threatened. If cornered, however, they will defend themselves. They hail from the planet Arborfrost, and live around the planet's equator, where the weather is warmest. They use a thick layer of fat beneath their skin to keep warm in cooler weather, and hibernate during the winter in communal underground dens. In males, the dorsal fin is larger, and used for display; during mating season, the males' dorsal fins become colorful, as opposed to the normal green color they have the rest of the year.

I used the membrane thingy on the snout because it looked like a manatee nose to me.

I might try making a few when the creature creator comes out...

Tbh, they're all pretty poor.

M is for mirroring, otherwise use the mouse wheel to scroll-rotate...and mouse-wheel click to change what you're scrolling for.  ;) I think it's all in the help as well.

Thanks for that I can find no mention of M to mirror in the help section.

That video actually taught me something I didn't know, that you can press the number keys to switch between layers, I was using the arrow keys and it got really messy at times.

Title: Re: Creature Editor 3.0

Nope. Sorry. Not Vista. Vista was not out when this program was made and Vista is sadly not backward compatible with a lot of earlier windows programs.

You know, a lot of people said that it's not worth the $10 to get the full creature creator when the actual game will have it. Others argue that the CC must be 1/5 of the game if it costs $10. Well. All those people are wrong.
The full CC is possibly one of the most godly wastes of my time that I have found in a long time. If you only have the demo, drop the $10 for the full one. It is worth it.

I took the liberty of converting the program to Vista using a tool made by the creator of Game Maker himself.
Since I don't have Vista I'd appreciate if someone told me if it works (it still works on XP, should also work on Vista now):

Since none of the links work in the first post I am re-posting the file here.

It now includes a tutorial PDF that I made for my school art portfolio.

Hmm... On the topic of updating this. I have game maker pro now and I could even export this to Android and HTML5 I guess. If there is really interest in doing so.

This portion of the forum's deader than a clown at a coulrophobics' convention, but I'd still say go for it. If published on the internet, or better yet published for the mobile market (android), I'm sure plenty of people could find it interesting enough to download, something to just toy around with.

Otherwise it's not very hard to find a decompiler for Game Maker, especially since the Creature Editor was probably made with a pretty old version of GM.

Yeah I hate to try to decompile it. I am hoping for the source still to be out there and hopefully easy to update. Still there might be quite a bit of work to do so.
