Okay check this. I figured something out. You know how you can get the Agressor Irritant Plasmid? And you have the Security Beacon Plasmid? Well I bet you can try this. You find a splicer and a camera in the same room. You put the agrresor irritant on the camera. And then put the security beacon on the splicer. the agressor will go nuts and destroy the camera for you, while the security bots will come in, ignore you. and attack the crap out of the splicer. Then you can just let things play out until the aggressor is dead and the bots go away...  and then loot the room.

Or you can put an agressor irritant on a Little Sister... have it drop the little sister like a bag of hammers, have the big daddy end up fighting it ( or you can just drop the irritant on the big daddy and distract both of them and do the dirty work yourself ).. and then take Adam from the Little Sister. Its a depraved and evil thing to do to a kid.. but survival of the fittest, know?

I just hope that there are some mighty strong attack plasmids in the game. Because from everything I have read and seen, you are never going to have enough ammo in this game. There are probably going to be a lot of times where you are just going to have to cut and run to save your skin. If you dont continue to be followed across the map by something. You will probably be able to run long enough to find another enemy to distract the enemy after you, and then make your escape.

The only real downside to this game seems to be searching for stuff. At one point in the video it shows the character finding bullets in the water. I would never think to look in water for anything. And even so... I would probably have a hard time spotting it. Especially because half the lights in Rapture dont seem to do more than just flicker.

I am exciited about this game though. I spent an hour and a half last night watching the video over and over again. I noticed that glass bottles can be broken into different pieces, and dont always shatter. One bottle I picked out as braking at the top, then getting shot again and shattering at the bottom. The neon signs seem to have at least some damage function to them. There is a lot of ambient noise everywhere. The lighting is kind of a mix between Fear and Condemned: Criminal Origins. Its not too heavy but it also doesnt have too much contrast. Its just about right. And not everything is shined to a high gloss. Carpet looks like carpet. And there isnt a sheen to everything. There are fewer bloom effects in this game than say , Oblivion.. so things look like they are more naturally lit, and dont seem to glow as much.

And then there is the water. I have never seen water flow down a wall like that before. It looked real. And it looked like it was washing down the grooves of the tile as well. The lighting on the gun also seemed to reflect the lighting in the enviroment well. When your character was in the dark, the gun was dark. It almost works as a stealth meter as to whether or not you are in the dark.

There is a lot going on in that demo. The only snafu with the sound is that the characters repeated noises a lot. Especially the Little Sisters. They seem to have a limited vocabulary and the abiility to cough and have it sound the same every time.

But the animation is really good. Its fluid, and transitions from action to action.

Over all.. this demo shows some extreme potential for this game. It shows that its going to be rewarding for creative gameplay, but its also going to be difficult. Especially if you try and play it like a traditional shooter. It  reminds me very much of a mix of Deus Ex: Invisible War and Oblivion mixed together, with an easy to use menu system.

So here is to the city of Rapture. May there be Adam for all.

If the alarm goes off when you destroy a security camera that would work but I don't think there was an example of that in the demo. The guy kept talking about all these choices and how open and non linear it was. Then he says the level he was demoing was one that you had been trapped on by some singer, doesn't sound too open to me.

Also another example he gave was with the security cameras, highlighting the choice between trying to sneak and save ammo or just destroying the security camera. So he tries to sneak and fails, alarms go off and then uses a few shots killing security copters and then a few more destroying the camera and then some more on another security copter. When later in another set piece he destroys a security camera in two shots anyway. Not much of an 'option'.

I was definately intrigued about the 'bigger picture' that he hinted about though, finding out about the little sisters and how you deal with them down the line and the overall story line.

I still have hopes for it, although personally (and probably boringly) I would have just prefered System Shock 3. I just hope this doesn't 'do' a Dues Ex 2.

I can't say I know much about this game but that whole singer trapping you thing well there has to be a plot thats not the game being restrictive thats that game having a story. It also sounds like he did have a choice with the camera thing he choose to be sneaky also sounds like he was crap at being sneaky. There are restrictions on the world if enemies come you can't choose to ignore them and dance a merry jig, You can't choose to have them decide not to shoot at you, You are not god and get to influance the decisions of mortals. Stop taking the term Open so literal.

You know, only they couldn't call it that ... but I'm still really happy I own a kickass PC for this game.

Man this game looks great. I was in the airport and picked up an xbox magazine just too pass the time and it had bioshock on the front cover. I must say the art was amazing, you see a Little Sister hugging big daddy as he has his arms over her protecting her from a hail of bullets. This game just really got too me and its hard too explain why, its almost as if even tho this large city has gone to chaos there is still a sense of order in some ways. The big daddys and little sisters stick together, and im guessing the big daddys are pretty high up on the food chain. As for the other enemies we will see. By the way that water looks amazing.

Based on that video, I'm think the commentator gives themselves way too much credit. They've added a money system in a shooter, yay wow. Other than that, there are basically nothing new, unless 40's environs and underwater is new. Maybe the little sister and big daddy thing will go further, but for now, it seems pretty generic. Cool graphics and water effects though.

I wouldnt call it generic. That is like calling Deus Ex (I liked both Deus Ex games... begin boo'ing at me ) or System Shock 2 generic. Very few Shooters slow down their pace and have potentially but not always aggressive enemies. Many shooters dont feature rpg elements. This game is more of a hybrid of System Shock 2 and games like Thief and Oblivion. It breaks convention by enforcing ammo conservation and thought in how you deal with every situation. You arent going to have the ammo to shoot out every camera you come by. You arent going to have enough Adam to turn off every security system. You arent even going to have enough energy for using your plasmids all the time. From everything I have read about this game over the past year... it really slows everything down.

Now fine... if you want to call it generic than do so. But try comparing it to other shooters and see how generic it is. Its more than a game with a money system tacked on. And a lot of the game is the enemies and how their AI works. Between the Protectors ( Big Daddies ) and Gatherers ( Little Sisters ) , and then the Aggressors ( the different kind of Splicers they have shown... there is apparently more than one type according to screenshots ) and Security Systems.

The game takes some stuff that isnt new necesarrily, but that doesnt mean it is generic necesarrily.  Thats like calling Oblivion generic because it builds upon Morrowind. using elements from rather unconventional shooters ( the few there have been ) and using them in certain new ways puts the game into a minority of shooters.

Maybe im just defensive... but honestly... generic shooters dont make you think half as much as they make you run and shoot. Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter is a generic shooter. Area 51 is a generic shooter. Prey is a generic shooter. They all have the same thing in common. Corridor levels and linear paths. They all have a set of semi-generic weaponry. Hell! Even Half-lfe 2 is a generic shooter! it has vehicles ( Halo and other games before it ), your basic selection of weapons ( EVERY SHOOTER ), a rather linear path ( MOST SHOOTERS ).The main character had armor and health ( that goes back to DOOM ).  It even the old staple of shooters! ZOMBIES!!! The only thing that sets it apart is one weapon and one wapon only. And that is the gravity gun. And that wasnt even new. Object manipulation was in games like Psi-Ops before it was in Half-Life 2.

There is hardly a game that isnt generic unless its the first game to do something. Even System Shock 2 was generic. The original System Shock did everything System Shock 2 did back in 94. Quake took from Doom which took from Wolfenstein 3d. Unreal took from Quake.

So do you consider most shooters generic just for being shooters? What makes any shooter different than Wolfenstein 3d? The enemies? The enemies are sure to have been done before somewhere. The item system? Been done somewhere else before. The guns? Think of every type of gun in every shooter. There is maybe one new gun for every 30 new shooters. Powers? Been done too. Rpg elements? Been done a long time ago. Dark and light enviroments? Been done in Doom. Destructible objects and enviroments? Been done many ways. Reactive AI? Been done.

Seriously. Now I am trying very hard to find a shooter that isnt generic. So many of them are so derivative of each other. I just wonder if its the combination of elements that makes it unique. Who knows. I will let you decide for yourself. But its very easy to call ANY shooter Generic.

I wasn't impressed, they just talked about the story and walked around. The graphics were good, but not revolutionary. I can't believe this game won a ton of "BEST OF E3" awards...

Keep in mind I've never been a fan of the original.

I never played Messiah, from Shiney, but it sounds very similar to that.
Your normal stock first person shooter always looks pretty, nearly always boasts some groundbreaking gimmick, and ends up just being a rehashed clone with a different slant on an old theme. True, its hard to be original, but I dont really see anything that is -that- promising here. Upgrading the self-mods on the run? Power slotting/switching. Been done to death. Enemy AI that doesnt automatically treat you as hostile on sight, but considers certain other NPCs as enemies? Been done a lot. "Non-linear free-roaming play as you wish" promises? Heh, thats been done a lot too.

Sure, it could turn out to be entertaining, and it shows potential, but I dont really see anything that will be overwhelming here. For an obviously pre-scripted demo for show, those splicers really started to look repetetive in their movements. My opinion is that this wont be a generic stock FPS, but will join rank with the new generation of stock FPS, with whatever layer of gimmick it gives us. It would be nice to be proven wrong though.

Yay Deus Ex! I only played the 2nd one, but boy was that fun

Especially this gun I found that shot needle. When the needles hit a guy he would catch on fire. Rock on!

/off topic

Anyway, from what I've seen (didn't look at the movie yet) System Shock 3 seams rather cool

Gotta admit...that developer walkthrough video impressed me.

Dunno why my expectations weren't sky high already....I can't think of any game by Irrational that I haven't enjoyed, except the Freedom Force series - and that's only cuz it just wasn't my type of game - I did recognize the quality of it, despite that.

I loved Freedom Force. It was a Comic Book Superhero game done right.

I even enjoyed SWAT 4. It showed some real polish.

I think we may have a real winner on our hands. I definetly think so! Oh.. and btw,  I love the Little Sisters. When she says "Look Mister Bubbles! Adam!" I just went hysterical. I loved her calling the Big Daddy "Mister Bubbles .

Speeking of Prey, Bioshock looks fairly similar to Prey. How similar do you guys/gals think the requirement will be? Those water efect in the new video are scaring the willies out of my PC.

All I know is that my laptop overheated when playing Oblivion.. and Bioshock looks like it would easily do the same.

bioshock has alot riding on it. For me thats because it's the unofficial sequel to System Shock 2 which was one of the greatest psychological thriller games of its time. There will never be a system shock 3 because too many people own the licence for someone to go around and buy it all up. Alot of the original team is working on this game though so here's hoping!

Just got this a few days ago:
Intel Core 2 Duo e6600
4GB OCZ Gold DDR2
ATI x1950xtx 512MB DDR4 (MSI)

My most expensive upgrade ever... by alot. (I had an AthlonXP)

It should handle Bioshock alright :D GRAW seems to be pretty easy for it... I played System Shock 2 a couple of years ago, and it was a great mixture of FPS and RPG, Bioshock should be awesome.

Same here, especially the dynamic AI and all the different situations you will have it the game.  I also liked how you can augment your weapons (nothing really new), but the idea of those plasmids is cool, basicly like a Genetic spell.

My current card should easily last until then. I'm sure I could run Crysis at max DX9 settings for a while :D.. oh and of course Bioshock.. Damn there's so many awesome games out next year..

Somone on the gamespot.com forums was saying that their ati 800 would not be able to run bioshock. This set off a small alarm for me because I own an 850xt. I know most people on those forums overhype the newest graphics cards and technology, thus undervalue the older stuff, but I need someone to tell me I'm good to go :-[ I cant imagine somthing I use to play hl2/css, oblivion, and bf2142 on high would be outdated so quickly,  ::) but as I said I need another person to put my fears to rest. :'(

I'll try it out, but my PC, while competent, probably won't do this game justice.

How does it go from playing everything maxed in all my recent games to worthless in the span of almost no time... I was kind expecting not being able to play it on high, but god, completly blocked? Dont they say that about every game about to come out, though? Its another graphically intense first-person game which is claiming a lot, so out of experience the best i'll expect from it is good atmosphere and a stock high-end adventure-shooter. No doubt it'll be entertaining to some degree, but I wouldnt expect anything groundbreaking.

...then again, we'll have to see just how close it is to good old System Shock. Big boots to fill.

I watched some videos about this and it looks like a cool game with the underwater and 40s themes and the nonlinear gameplay but the circular object being squeezed reminds me a lot of the alien object used in Half-Life 2 to control the antlions and the flying machines are almost identical to manhacks so it felt derivative of HL2.
I don't think I'd be able to run the game well, if at all. The system requirements are very high and discriminate against all PC gamers who haven't bought expensive systems or video cards in the past 2 years. How much money do they expect to yield from such a minority demographic? Most of their sales will probably be XBOX sales. I'll try to run the demo when its released but I doubt I'd pay more than $30 for a single player game that I could beat in less than a month anyway even if I can run it well.

Well, when the demo comes out for the PC I will atempt to run the darn thing. I'm still a little ticked that my graphics card isnt supposed to be able to run it, but I'll give it a try. If it turns out I cant run the game I suppose now isnt a horrible time to upgrade. Crysis, spore, and starcraft 2 in addition to bioshock is a decent enough reason for it, but I still cant help but feel cheated. Purchased the x850xt for $180 about a year ago and out the door it goes because of some shadder issue.  :-\ I'll just have to see wont I?

http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/931329.asp?q=bioshock

I dont know quite what to say. These scores put Bioshock in the same tier as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Resident Evil 4, Half-Life , GTA, and every other gener breaking, system making, time sink of a game I can think of. In fact Bioshock is currently rating higher than every other game ever.
I understand its going to be a good game, I knew that when I started following it last year, but of this caliber? I suppose I'll just have to wait and play it. I just find that score surprising to say the least.

Its overrated sure you can build your own creature and all but that will get boring after some time. It will be the same thing every creature. Eat a bunch of little creatures and avoid the bigger ones until you can make weapons. Advance too city stage and wipe/make peace with those around you C&C style. Space stage go and explore other worlds doing the same thing as  you did in the City Stage, make peace or war. It will get old after a while, and personally for me it isnt dark enough everything seems too colourful, I dont get a serious feeling from the game. But this isnt about spore this is about Bioshock.

Bioshock will last maybe a year. Spore has the same amount of content, etc, even more than Sims, which has lasted years and is ongoing. In the end it will outlast Bioshock, as Bioshock is replaced by better shooters.

I think your taking that out of context. Im quite sure that bioshock hasnt done nearly as much for the gaming world as those games. Thats why I was surprised. Zelda perfected the 3d adventure genere, RE4 brought new life into a dying franchise, GTA mastered the free world concept. All of these games have done somthing that is now a standard in current games. When a new game comes out we can look to these older games as the reference point to where some of its ideas came from. Bioshock just took a bunch of ideas in other great games and put them together and put the gamer in a new place. Not apocolipse or WW2. I agree that bioshock is not as amazing as the reviews stated. I  do think however, Bioshock will be a fun new experience.

By the way. Stop hijacking my threads! :P I have no stance on spore, I dont plan on following it until we get a date of release and not a gusse that can be knocked back 3 months at will.

Im wondering about one thing though, the enemy AI, will it be the same for the box as for the PC ? if its the same then I fear that it will either be hard for the box, or easy for the PC, since the 2 platforms handle very differently in regards to FPSs.
If its balanced towards the robot like movements of the boxers, then the PC users will have an easy time, but if its balanced towards the agility of the mouse+keyboard combo, then the box users are going to have a hard time ..... at least thats how I imagine it, please tell me Im just being silly.

I already preordered though, so its not like Im trying to make up my mind if I want it or not, that is already settled :)

The game gets pretty intense on hard mode. You actually feel like the enimies could kill you, which makes the game even better.

It's funny, I've played the demo but I didn't really think it was that great. Maybe it was because my control stick kept making me look up, it was the morning and I was annoyed by a bunch of little things. I might give the PC demo another chance.

Meh, there's nothing Thompson can do. He is no longer legally allowed to attempt to ban one of Take Two's games or even really mess with them at all.

Bit Torrent is not illegal.

It's a free demo, therefore there is nothing wrong with the demo being released on Bit Torrent. Heck, the SupCom demo had a Bit Torrent link.

As for the fact that the demo is not out yet... that is a gray area. What I will tell you is that you should try to get it now (Providing the speeds haven't tanked) before someone removed the link. ;)

Also there are supposedly new Nvidia drivers coming out tonight.

You overlooked something. Tracker : Thepiratebay.org. Gray area or not, you dont want to download from them. They have this delicious habit of sending info to your ISP to get your account locked.

Post by: Uroboros on August 20, 2007, 11:59:16 am
Uh, what? I thought it was well known that thepiratebay.org is "monitored"? People have been saying it for some time now. I thought they just meant statistically or something, but one day I found myself unable to get on the internet. When I rang my ISP they mentioned copywrite infringement, pirating, and torrents. A letter had to be signed, saying i'd be more careful about what/where I download, and that i'd "take steps" to ensure this kind of thing wouldnt happen again, and it included info about the date/time/location/IP address/etc. The rumours turned out to be true, and I had a mark put against my ISP account for it. Apparently if it happens again im likely looking at something heavier than a warning, and perhaps a permenant ban from the ISP. I tried google but I cant find anything, but if you look in the comments of some thepiratebay tracked torrents, you'll see people warning about being monitored.

this is an update from that little news thing

UPDATE - Elizabeth from 2K has repsonded on the forums, clarifying the copy protection issue. The key lies in uninstalling before you reinstall. Uninstalling registers the same as installing does, so if you do not perform an uninstall first SecuROM thinks you are just installing the game on different systems over and over again. Hit the jump for the full text of Elizabeth's message, and thanks for everyone who followed up on the issue.

so...its not that bad...and if you 'run out' of instals...you could just download a crack or something...

This game will be one of those classics we talk about in years to come, like deus ex and dungeon keeper.
I have still only progressed a small distance into the final release, but its obvious that bioshock is a monster game, the visuals are stunning, the AI is brutal like rabid dogs that havent been fed in 14 days, the lore is everywhere like a sticky substance clinging to every surface, the voices are excellent, the atmosphere is as thick as a certain presidents skull, and the character system is simple yet diverse enough to allow for multiple tactics ...... well Im going back in, just wanted to say this game rocks.

The hole Biz is turning paranoid which only hurts the consumer. Sure they make claim that only one User buys the game and should only play the game but how do you check that? I mean if i want to play on my brothers computer i use his account so no way to check it that way. On the other hand if i upgrade or reinstall or install the game on a other machine (which i own) then it asked me to activate the product again an so on. It is not a good way to solve it. Never will be.

No this is contra productive. When every i get a game that do now work on my computer for some mad copy protection scheme then i always get a urger to just circumvent it. It is often not hard to do so ether and one do not have to worry about CD and DVDs or Spyware that have started to become common in newer games. In the end i just get man and do not buy or play there product. Lose for both those that what to show off what they made and for those that want to make money.

The most interesting think is that he shows that reviews them self of games are bad by making some bad review comments him self about the games flaws (which in some cases are not really flaws form a game design point or money making point.) But he always makes these comments sound funny which makes review so good.

I wish all games had Steam protection, I mean:
- Steam used to suck but it's really cool now.
- You can still get the pirated game but you can't go online or get updates easily so it's an incentive to buy the real thing. (I'm talking about Half-Life and Half-Life 2 games and their MODs, dunno if it's like that for other steam games as I just bought the ones I just mentioned)

Finally I tried the demo version of Bioshock...
And I've got a problem: the screen looks as following:

I don't think that's normal. (or is it?)
Also the mouse is invisible, when I am in the menu.
Anyone got an idea, why it's not working for me? :(

Btw: The audio is fine, it's just the graphics.

Completed the game today. (Saved all the Little Sisters).
It seems to me that the game tapered off a bit towards the end, its a shame it wasn't a little longer and didn't take in a few more locales or expand on the existing ones (I'd love to have spent more time in Fort Frolic) but altogether its still one of the best games I've played in just about forever.

I guess the material the suits of Big Daddies are made of are stong against high velocity impacts but weak against low velocity impacts... yeah, some magical material.

Either that or daddies are so hopped up on ADAM that you have to actually lodge a sizeable object in them for them to feel the effects.

Half life 2 did NOT have the best storyline. But it did win for me as the best way the story was told. Bioshock has the best story in my book because they managed to juggle 7 different subplots and a main story and still tie it all together at the end...

Besides, Bioshock has Andrew Ryan. What does Half Life 2 have? Gordan Freeman? The Gman?

Yes I have and I must say that Bioshock is much better than System Shock 2. Even if it wasn't as pants-sh*ttingly scary, it still held up in it's own right in terms of story (which I thought was a lot more interesting), graphical style, and overall atmosphere.

I  have to agree, I played SS2 and it is still one of my all time favorite games; the atmosphere, the story, everything.  I looked forward to BioShock for a very long time.  It is pretty, the sound is great and the atmosphere is decent.  The story is just too much like SS2.  In fact the big "twist" I saw from the first minute I started playing.  Honest, not only did it not surprise me it annoyed me because I had hoped for something more original.

The replay value is pretty low as well, since there really is no character developement at all and IMO that is one of the biggest factors in what gives a game that value.

All that being said I still like the game; I just hoped for something more.   :(

Ah, it's a thing that bugs me about Infinite. Great video, by the way.

When Infinite came out, people were losing their **** about the on-rails segments and how innovative and cool they were. Except Metroid Prime 3 did it a six years earlier and it was pretty much the same thing. Maybe if Infinite had ended up being as cool as the pre-release material it would have been better, but they released something that was about the same. So it wasn't that innovative or cool.
