Title: Greatest Videogame Music
Post by: Piloteer on September 18, 2006, 04:55:40 pm
Music (and sound in general) seems to be vastly overlooked in the world of videogames. We should all take a moment to appreciate some of our favorite videogame music of all time.

Mine would include that from the Zelda, Metroid (Prime), Halo, and Final Fantasy.

What is some of your favorite videogame music?

My current favorites are some of the stuff from Dead Rising. I really like the instrumental stuff in the beginning while in the helicopter.

I hate the music from the new Zelda trailer... oh my god it is so bland... thats my opinion though.

I love love love the Final Fantasy Overture. The song that is in each game. It was the first song you hear in FFI.
And Zelda's Lullaby.
And Aeris' Theme.
And the Glitzville song!!!

Wheee!

Actually, you saved me from making a rather useless topic. If anyone can find me the orchestrated version of the Final Fantasy Overture, feel free to tell me.

Oh! Another favorite that comes to mind are the water levels in Super Mario 64. You know, that nice, soft, relaxing music? It set the perfect mood for the level.

Far and away, the two best music soundtracks are from two PC strategy games. Fantasy General and Heroes of Might and Magic 2. Nothing else is even close. If you haven't heard these two, I highly recommend picking them up (you can probably Ebay them for about $2 now) and giving them a listen.

The Castlevania series has a lot of fantastic music, especially Symphony of the Night.
And while I've come to mostly dislike the Megaman series, I do enjoy pretty much all its music.
I actually like most of the tyrant themes for Resident Evil games, especially "The 2nd Malformation of G" from RE2.

Cobra mentioned that he likes Donkey Kong Country's water music tracks; I'd have to agree with you there. My particular favorite is DKC 3's water theme.

I guess I don't have a specific track I could proclaim is greatest. My taste shifts around too much.
And I have way too many favorites, usually a handful from each game's sountrack. To list them all would be inane.  :-\

Also, I'm surprised someone hasn't yet brought up Final Fantasy VII's One-Winged Angel as their all time favorite.
'cause really... at any given point in time, someone is raving about this damn track.

i like the advanced wars music....it kicks ass. i also like the metroid music and the zelda....and the mario...and...eeeh golden sun music lol i could go on for a while (has anyone ever just did nothing in a game just to hear the music before you go to the next level?)

I love the way Chibi-Robo makes its own music. A note for every step you take, in a different timbre for every surface. Spanish guitar for cleaning the floor, a piano chord for digging with the spoon, a riff for picking things up. It's special.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles has a neat soundtrack, and Beyond Good and Evil has great ambience. Nintendo games always have really memorable themes, too.

In the other music topic...

It is a great song though. I actually made a note to not say it... for your very reason. :P

Half Life 2 actually has some very cool music, you don't really notice it though.

Civilizations 4 has a lot of good music to, as does Europa Universalis 2 if you like that kind of thing.

But there are alot of games with great soundtracts, so it is hard to list them all.

It's actually a park-builder type game.
Turns out that after my CD broke and a virus rampaged through my system, the music is the only thing of the game I have left. :(

Civilizations 4 has a lot of good music to, as does Europa Universalis 2 if you like that kind of thing.

Yeah, EU2 has some nice period-specific tracks, but aren't they all pre-existing (aka "not original for the game")?

Some of my favorites:
GUN soundtrack - lots of really good songs here.
Max Payne 2 - "Theme" and "Choice" - Choice always mentally brings me back to the AWESOME final level...I could listen to this song 30x in a row.
Xenosaga series - some great pumping, chanting, epic tracks. The soundtracks are well worth buying.
Beyond Good & Evil - has a few very nice songs, but I can't think of their names right now.
Rome: Total War - lots of adrenaline pumping battle music.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - Phenomenal title track!
Ikaruga - simply because the music is synced so perfectly to the action.
ReZ - same as Ikaruga...plus you can add to it!
Descent: Freespace & Freespace 2: Dan Wentz composed some very nice "fight" music for these!
DooM - e1m1 - Anybody who played DooM 1 in its time would be hard pressed to forget this track.
Shadow of the Colossus - for simply being epic.
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay - more adrenaline tracks here :)

Best music? Well someone already mentioned Donkey Kong Country ( My fave is from DKC2 its called Stickerbrush Symphony... it almiost brings a tear to my eye. You can find it Here (http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/snes/bramscrm.mid) Right click and save  ).

But my absolute fave is from the Kirby games. Specifically Kirby's Adventure. I can even tell you which song it is. It is the second wolrd theme for Orange Ocean ( World #6 ). Its the slow and calm theme that makes me relaxed. You can find the track Here (http://kirby.classicgaming.gamespy.com/multimedia/sounds/adventure/08%20-%20Orange%20Ocean%20Map%20Screen.mp3) ( riight click and save ) .

They have a great Stickerbrush Symphony remix there. And some great Doom remixes...

Which brings me to DOOM. I forgot about it. It has some great music too... although I like the OCremixes of Doom 2 ( from Mazedude ) the best. Check out Gothic Sandy by him.

Though the score is not from the video games but rather from the Movies, most any of the Movie-based (not the old book-based) Lord of the Rings games (also includes The Battle for Middle-Earth 1&2), the first one (Battle for Middle Earth) had my favorite song (wholely) of the Lord of the rings soundtrack, but the second one cuts out the good part (of the song). I just really like the music, classical music is good, to me.

My vote goes to Yuzo Koshiro's work on the Actraiser soundtrack, especially the orchestral version available here (http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/268). Everything about it is just so epic. Shame the music in Actraiser 2 sucked so horribly.

Honourable mention goes to the Sonic Adventure games. While they were necessarily hit-and-miss given how diverse they were musically, there were a lot of really great songs in both games.

I generally just like anything cool and epic sounding. In most games I don't concentrate too much on the soundtrack.

A funny thing is though, that every time I hear the castle music from Super Mario World I get a chill through my spine. Mainly due to HOW MANY FREAKING TIMES I DIED PLAYING THAT GAME GRAGH! (I love it though.)

And as Bastardman said, SA was pretty good.

Perhaps one of the greatest soundtracks to a game I've played for a long long time is that of Cave Story.

The music was remixed recently. Some tracks are very good - I particularly like Ball of Ballos (Running Hell) and Grass Stains (On to Grasstown):

This one goes WAY back, many of you have probably not heard or played this 20+ year old game.  But back in the day this title music was amazingly catchy.

- M.U.L.E for the C64 by Electronic Arts (I've never heard the Agima version but I'm told it's better)

Next one - a little less 'retro' but is such great intro music, I had to mention..

- Command and Conquer  - Red Alert

I also like the intro songs for Advanced Wars and Metroid Prime.

This is pretty old, but I thought it was worth posting.  It's a bunch of high school students performing the Halo theme.  Really well.

Does anyone know what school that was performed at? I checked around the page and I didn't see any of that information.

No idea, but I found their Myspace page.

They are seriously very talented prog/post-rock instrumentalists.

The Age of Empires II music brings back lots of memories for me, as AOE and AOE II were the first real video games I played.

I also love the music from the Total War series, and the Sims 2 music always cheers me up.

Well, aside from the standards such as Mario and Zelda and such on the list of game music I listen to (and being the only kind of music I enjoy to listen to recreationally) Some music I've really enjoyed over the years include music from games such as:
SimCity 2000
SimCity 3000
Killer 7
Banjo Kazooie
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Theme Hospital
Age of Empires II
And many others I can't think of at the moment.

One of my personal goals have been finding internet radio stations that play music I enjoy and treats my ears to some of the more esoteric songs, including rare/hard to find/old songs related to games. The first internet radio I listened to is WTMK: Mario Radio, and it is of the best stations for a wide variety of played songs, though recently it has been including Donkey Kong game music for whatever reason.

Musical Links:
WTMK: Mario Radio (http://www.themushroomkingdom.net/wtmk.shtml) - All Mario All the Time (And Donkey Kong)
Zelda Reorchestrated (http://www.zreomusic.com/index.php) - Surprisingly accurate reorchestrated music using virtual instruments.
Overclocked Remix (http://www.ocremix.org/) - Remixes of songs from hundreds of games.
Zone Radio Network (http://radio.emulationzone.org/) - Mostly game music stations, but some aren't. (WTMK is part of this network)

I thought the pieces in sim city 3000 were great. Ever since hearing it, I've had Sim Broadway stuck in my head.
You can listen to them here: http://simcity.ea.com/coolstuff/sc3k_music/index.php

Jazz is my favorite kind of music, yet doesn't get used much for game soundtracks. Here it worked out really well.

In fact, off the top of my head I can't really come up with any other examples of games that use a mainly Jazz soundtrack. I'd really like to see more.
Usually most game soundtracks are Classical or Rock...Or Classic Rock...Or Occasionally Hip-Hop/Rap
Anyone know of any others that use Jazz or other types of music besides those I've mentioned above? Perhaps I should start a topic about this, that is "What do you think of the variation in style of game soundtracks."

Super mario was diffrent. Power ups can kill you. Enemys wre fast and so on. so the took a japonese game and removed the save. the game was about A guy that looked like mario but was asian and had to save his family. the just took it, thrashed the save and called it super mario 2. a few years later the japs got it called super mario USA and we got super mario lost levels. sorry for bad grammar I just am tired...

I feel fantastic and I'm

KH 2 Final Mix secret ending music called "Fate of the Unknown" is my personal fav. The song is so dramatic for the scences in the AMV. It's not too long but not too sickningly short, it's the greaetest! ;D

I think Animal Crossing's music would be the best if it wasn't MIDI.

Vampire the Masquerade- Bloodlines has pretty good music. I used to go the the bar, the last stand, just to listen to the song playing there.

Then I found that they were in mp3 format in the game folder and I was happy.

The Animal Crossing music in Brawl isn't of MIDI quality. I might be able to find some Youtube links of the music if you want.

EDIT: I found some:
The first may be a spoiler to some.

Personal fav as I can't resist the bongos! And I didn't for get about the Sitar either! ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1bitZ9e4lY

Military/Space Armada type music settles well with the level if any of you played or seen the game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0R6FnpqylE

One of the most beautiful as it is a thought provoking song. Makes you feel like you flying fast in the clouds doesn't it. And it seems that this song could have fit in the new Nights game for the wii.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIuvjG3Egjo

Very dramatic I should say for a Mario game, trust me the mood of the level is perfect for this music. These songs pretty sums it up so enjoy my peps ;)!

I got a couple more from SSBB Official Soundtrack.
These songs do loop so people don't get mad if you don't like it ;).

One of my favorite remixes from Star Fox 64 as the level was amazing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eZff_gWWQs
One of the classics that was remixed from the original Star Fox.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ithTqEINZac
Nothing to do with Star Fox but this song kind of reminds me of elevator music.
Calming....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdSGcro5YZw
Something a little more robust, if anyone remembers Sonic CD than please sit and listen. ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn71hIsm0U8
You can't say no to this piece, the awesome Sephiroth theme which I can't resist.
Turn up the volume a little because the audio is a little low.

That's all for now. :)
(If something like the sephiroth theme or any other theme is already here than tell me so I can replace it with something new)

I don't know if anybody's mentioned this...heck I might have posted it...but I really dig all the music in Kirby. They've got a lot of it remixed in Brawl, which is nice...but everything from King DeeDeeDee's theme (my favorite) to Meta Knights airship to the theme song for the owl in the second (or third? it was the one where you had the hamster, fish and owl) Kirby's Dreamland...classic.

Wrapped up Sticker Star the other week and wanted to bring some of the soundtrack to you guys. It's really well done and absolutely up to the standard that you'd expect from Paper Mario. Aside from offering up different types of gameplay, all of the Mario RPG games have very good and oftentimes very underrated soundtracks. Check out some of Sticker Star!
