Title: Chess anyone?
Post by: Oviraptor on June 04, 2005, 02:39:24 pm
I was wondering if anyone else here likes chess.

And technically chess is portable, you can play it outside.  :P

Ask and you shall find chess (http://files.psphacker.com/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,12,250).

And I love chess.

I prefer good-ol'-fashioned boardgame-with-pieces chess. It's more personal.

I use to play chess all the time with my old flatmates.
I tried to teach my girlfriend how to play last week - she kind of understood

Back in my day (last year) I could castle a mean rook, but I'm sort of out of practice. I'll play somebody on Yahoo Games if they want.

I think you would be correct, most females are not interested in chess.  ;)

Computer opponents can be tough because computers work from numbers, which means, that they will never lose a piece, as long as they can help it.

But a computer can not see 2 or 3 moves into the future.... It just looks for the best move for that pertucular turn. If you are able to trick the computer its actualy quite easy

The good ones can. Those are next to impossible to beat.

Chessmaster can see all the possible moves, that's why I like playing him on a slower computer, so he doesn't get as much time to figure them all out. I used to beat him ~90% of the time on my old 133mhz rig, and I beat him once on this 2.8ghz rig.

the speed of the computer afects how well the it does?

I guess I could affect it if you programmed it to only play based on how many possibly moves it could calculate in a certain amount of time. A faster computer will be able to work out more moves and therefore be able to pick a better strategy.

Still on my point the novice setting whipped me so makes me wonder how the heck does one beat the champion level.

Any one besides my ever try thinking machine 4 here http://processing.org/

holy crap, as soon as I saw it computing all the possible moves i knew I was screwed.

That was cool.

If only there was a way to set up a computer vs. computer game. (or would it have the same outcome every time?)

Really hard chess programs simulate an entire game each turn.  They see what you could do to win the game based on your last move and counter it.

Yeah, Vivec's right. It's really getting to be annoying. In the words of Krakow Sam:

"Does anyone know the answer to this question?"

Pando:"No! I dont!" ;)

I like Chess, bu t I don't like people who puplically say they don't like something and then don't bother to back it up wth a reason

So against those you use anti-computer tactics.  ;)
Those really do exist.
As for me, I love chess but I can't play anyone. I'm thinking on reviving the chess thread as soon as I really get reved up and my skill gets back to par. One question on this scale....

Faster--------------------------------------------------------o-------------------------------------------Stronger

What is easier and what is harder? Smetimes ne is hard, sometimes its easy, sometimes the middle is the hardest, etc....
I get all kinds of results from all kinds of settings, what is supposed to be harder?

I play chess competitively, its a great game that involves so much strategy and depth that it has survived for all these years even though we have advanced more and more ways of entertaining ourselves and planning for wars and such many of us still fall back to chess frequently.

That's why you play Ultimate Risk.

The game of Risk goes along normally except you solve every battle with either a game of Chess or a game of Stratego.

Ok those all sound like superior alternatives. Particularly the Stratego angle.
