Title: Creature Editor 2.0
Post by: huggkruka on July 06, 2006, 03:56:51 pm
Creature Editor 2.0.

This version contains several improvements upon the old one. See the following list:

- More than double the amount of parts.
- Every part is fully rotatable.
- Tired of that blue background? Choose from several different backgrounds!
- Most parts are now affected by the "depth" function.
- Move the blob if you need more space
- Remove the blob if you prefer to create the creature from scratch
- Rotate the blob
- All new section: Wings and flippers
- Give your creature a name
- Plus one more secret bonus feature.

Enjoy!

Great work as always, but the ability to save directly as a image would be handy.

I don't know if that's even possible in GameMaker though.

Check the "Help" button and all shall be revealed. If it's not in the help file, then it's common sense.
Goodnight all, have fun

Huggs, of you have the registered version of Game maker, you can easily make an automatic screen capture. Here's the code:
Code: [Select]
screen = get_string('Input Filename','Screenshot');
screen_save_part(screen,250,5,385,445);

The first line asks the user for the filename for it to be saved as. Input filename is the string displayed at the top. Screenshot is the default. The variable string is used in the next line.

Screen is the variable string the filename is saved as. The first two numbers are where it starts and starts in terms of x and y. The next two numbers are the width and the hight of the screen, respectively.

I think he's right, the feet can sometimes be hard to do without mirror.  If you couldn't make the tool, maybe you could do it like the eyes and have the mirrored copy there.

Despite that, this program is freakin awesome.  I made the creature I've been working on, and it actually helped me to develop the look of the race.

Hello everyone.  I am new and Hydro has been feeding me all this info on Spore for more than a year so here goes something...

It would be nice to already have the help docs up when the program starts and then have a checkbox to not have it come up the next time.

tyronians, a trader species that although sentient has a low population due to the fact that there ivory is extremely hard and can be molded easily. this make it very high on the intergalactic hit list and very wary of its customers. they have a limited grasp on technology up to that the only knowledge of what they are selling they have is what the price is. they usually hire alien body guards that have stolen naucean nano suits. this makes them some of the richest of all of the alien species but also the lowest in population. they have a foot with a claw on it witch they used for defending themselves when they were non-sentient. they have somewhat large brains around 18/20ths the size of a nauceans and they have thick whiskers that they use like a cats. they have average strength and strong crushing teeth which they use to feed on grut fruit. grut fruit is the least expensive of any food that you can buy in a tyronian market, is cheap for the fact that it is quite common and does not spoil for a while after picked. it tastes somewhat of mangos mixed with the juiciness of watermelons. they sell other foods but the tyronians themselves rarely eat anything other than grut fruit because it is not only nutritious but it has a chemical that works like caffeine, they basically like the sensation.

they are about half as tall as a torpal and very clever. they have crushing and spiky teeth. they use the spiky teeth in the wild like a bluff, they snarl and bear there teeth in an aggressive stance. but in reality the teeth are too fragile to be used in combat. the crushing teeth are used to break the grut fruits hard shell, but when market became the major trade in the culture, they sold them without the shell to other species.

comments apreciated.  (wanted to see what people thought of it before posting my own thread)

Its becuase your holding the left mouse. You click the part one then drag over. Then click the space bar to place. Don't hold the left mouse becuase it will select allthe parts your mose goes over if you do.

Here Sash, I made an Evii for you in the Editor, with the aid of Paint:

Woah, that's not bad you know, Necromonicon. Looks quite cool, and good for something made using this editor and Paint. Congrats, and thanks.

Hydro> I'll be using that Evii picture forever. It's an excellent drawing and even if I have to spend hours on Spore making it perfectly, I will. Do you still draw creatures for people? Or did you get too many requests, and stop?

I'll tell the people at PS to come here and post their creatures. And I'll wait for huggkruka to agree for me mirroring it.

Also, I don't know if anyone has asked for these features, or if they're planned, but free rotating and scaling parts would be a great option, as well as free painting on the creature.

how do u instert a pic

1. Don't double post.
2. You asked this before.

Daxx's 10 step guide to posting pictures:

1. Go into the creature editor and create your creature.
2. Press the Print Screen button (on most keyboards, it's at the top somewhere). This will take a screencapture, and put it on the clipboard.
3. Open your favourite image editing program (or Paint, whichever).
4. Paste in your copied pic.
5. Crop down (this is important, we don't need or want to see your entire screen).
6. Save as a PNG (or something else, but PNG is best).
7. Go to http://imageshack.us or some other hosting site (Imageshack is good).
8. Host the pic, following the instructions on the site.
9. Take the Forums Code/BB Code that it gives you and copy it.
10. Paste that code into a message, and post. Voila, you're done.

I stoped (except for special circumstances like art trades with Bonemouse) becuase of all the problems with Raven and other such things back when at Planet Spore. In short i get way too many requests too.

Also, I don't know if anyone has asked for these features, or if they're planned, but free rotating and scaling parts would be a great option, as well as free painting on the creature.

Free roatation is not going to happen. Each part is a seperate picture. So that means Huggs has to make 8 to 16 parts per part (front left facing rotated 4 directions, front right facing 4 directions, back left facing 4 directions, and back right facing 4 directions). Scaling is not going to happen, thats even harder .... free panitning ... ack!! It was ahrd enough to even do coloring becuase its all based upon color by area in layers. Free coloring not only would be too hard but ti would look ugly. Sorry...  :(

So, Hydro, any plans to keep upping the number of parts? I don't see any practical upper limit to those, and having more parts is always better than fewer parts.

Yes, but Huggs still has to get to all the other ones i made when he was gone before. I mean i made 9 pages worth.  8)

That's a big shame. I hope in the future there's an easy way to make those features possible.

As for the requests problems: it's such a shame when one or two people ruin it for everyone.

Completely irrelevant to the above points: here's my attempt at making a carnivorous tree in the editor:

http://www.planetspore.com/Deya.bmp

And a vehicle. I know it's a creature editor, but I experimented to see if I could make a decent vehicle:

Nice creatures, Bob.

Hydro and huggkruka> I don't know how you made the program, whether it was hard coding like in C++ or if you used a game/application making program. If it was the latter, then Multimedia Fusion or The Games Factory by Clickteam can allow you to do the scaling and rotating thing I mentioned above, with ease. e.g.:

http://www.planetspore.co.uk/RStest.zip (extract all to same folder and run the .exe, then load the .bmp from the program).

MMF is based on extensions which make it work. It's simple and colouring can be done as well. There's also an extension to give smoother resizing and avoid the pixelating, but this was something quick to show you what it can do.

I've already made a rotating example in Gamemaker, but this one (http://www.uploadtemple.com/view.php/1152603543.zip) has scaling too. The sprite does get a bit ugly if you rotate it, and if you enlarge it too much. (Note: don't right-click->save the file, it doesn't work then)

What scaling algorithm is use anyway? That can change a lot when you try to pixel rescale objects. (Especially when you make things larger.)

I just used the scaling that is already build into Game Maker. I wouldn't know how to do it differently in Game Maker...

Couldn't help myself so I made a special little creature I call the Flockna.

(http://www.sporewiki.com/images/2/24/Flockna.JPG)

You are probably thinking to yourself: "now that poor soul is not going to survive" and in a way, it is a really unstable being but unique not doubt. Also it lived in the early amphibious days when they were little dangers on the land and therefore could live for a few milion years.

The picture shows the Land walking form of the Flockna but the Flockna is amphibious.
On the ground it uses its big teeth-full beak to dig into trees and eat insects. It is rather slow and when in danger usually escapes into the water.

The Flockna actually swims upsidedown. In the water he eats through its seceondry mouth on the top of its head and its eyes can rotate. It uses its flippers in the back of its head and its back legs to move and rotate and the front legs are used like a whale's tail.

Acctually your Quillarian is why I asked, I was thinking its limbs were too scrawny, and the only way to improve it would be to use more creature blobs.
Title: Re: Creature Editor 2.0
Post by: Areku on July 11, 2006, 06:11:46 pm
Yep that was my reason too, many of the limbs weren't big enough but a blob would of made it perfectly. And I know this is a bit much to ask but could you possibly add some way to individually color certain parts, like individual blobs instead of them all being the "body" color? Perhaps make it to where you click the part then asign the color?  :D

EDIT: Just had to post this cool creature I made...

I don't know if another version is being done, but a few fairly simply recommondations...

1, since you have a rotation option for parts, you should also have a "flip" option
2, how about a "display" button which puts your creature right in the center of the screen with a chosen background (or plain white) for easy photoshopping?
3, would a stretch option be possible for parts?

1. Will probbly be done if not as a flip option but as just another part that is mirrored to choose from.

2. probbly not doable sicne you can move the body around as well as add other baby creatures around too.

3. same problem as scale, and free rotation. Sicne each size has to be done by hand for every possible view it is impossible to do i think.

3. Can be done using the functions image_xscale and image_yscale. This can scale the parts normally and also stretch them.

1. Cool
2. how about a button that just hides all the other crap temporarily, it's kind of difficult to move the whole creature over a little so that you don't get clipping by the edge of the screen or buttons and stuff.
3. Understandable completly.  it would be cool though if you could pull it off :).

But then many look ugly and wrong Hugg has said. I don't know. Its all up to Huggs on this. He is the programer. I just make the parts and backgrounds.

I think the problem is moving all the stuff where it is to another part. I am not posaitve but to get everything realtive to where it is, and move it as a whole would be terribely hard to do. In short you just thave to start your body blob closer to the middle before you start.

I wondered whether you were looking into a feature that would allow you to move all the pieces you had placed so far at once, for example if you were getting too close to the edge of the window. I said never mind, because you answered that question already.

You just ahve plan it out the same way you would if you were drawing a creaure by hand on a paper. IF you run out of room you probbly should have started near the middle more. And its it s just too big in all difrections then i would ahve to say its just way to bug in the same way you cannot make anything bigger than an elephant in spore you can;t make thing bigger than the screen and the alowed room in the creature editor. Also if you noiced v 2.0 is slightly bigger than 1.0 due to the size of my backgrounds i made being bigger.

I know, but sometimes you don't plan things out - especially if what you wanted to do can't quite be done in the editor, so you try something else instead.

Don't bust a gut over it, but it would be a nice feature to have.

Sorry...  :(

GameMaker right? in the sprite editor you make a rotate animation counterclockwise for 36 frames, then you code it in step like so;
Quote
Image_index = direction/10
then you can code under, let's say; "T" button is pressed;
Quote
direction = direction + 10

when T is pressed it rotates 10 degress :)

Scaling; under mouse wheel up, you just add
Quote
image_yscale = image_yscale+0.1
image_xscale = image_xscale+0.1

under mouse wheel down, you just add
Quote
image_yscale = image_yscale-0.1
image_xscale = image_xscale-0.1

when scrolled, it scales

Edit: Oh btw, why didn't you use "sprite blending" for coloring?

Yes, we have discussed that with Huggs before. At the time the problem was thatthe quality of the pictures was lost. But with my
Vehicle Editor (http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?topic=5753.0) I found a way around the grainy images. My solution will be in the next creature editor.

Plus I found a nice way to mirror. PM me if need be Huggs. ;)

Plus I found a nice way to mirror. PM me if need be Huggs. ;)

Oh, ok, cool, looks nice too :).
But mirroring is just using the transform sprite thingy, right?

In Vehicle Editor I made a seperate sprite and set it to a gif with one mirror and the other in one picture. Then I set the image speed to 0 so the frames wouldn't switch and made some code that changed the image frame.

But the better way is to say image_xscale = -1 and image_yscale = -1. This also flips the image, though I have a feeling there may be some problems with this method.

I couldn't see any problems with it, but it's so much easier just letting the program do it for you; in object properties under "Main1", under "sprite", just use the "transform the sprite" tool

The first link is broken, unfortunately. You might want to fix that, Mr. Spore Planet Admin.

Flames:
Click the second link. This will take you to the rapidshare site. Scroll to the bottom and click the "Free" button on the bottom right. Then sit and wait for a while. Somewhere on the screen (above the paypal links) will be a countdown.
When it reaches zero a set of options will pop up. They'll each be something like "Download Creature_Editor_2.0.zip from Cogent-network: dl28cg.rapidshare.de (6914 of 10000 MBit/s in use)". Select one (any one) and type in the letters into the box, then click the "download" button. You should then be able to save it.

Rapidshare sucks. It has the worst interface known to man.

My hard drive got messed up and I had to uninstall all the drivers for everything. I have the drivers CD that came with the computer, but alas, it is not the video card that came with the computer. I checked the visiontek website, they're too cheap to pay for the bandwith so that I can download the drivers right from their site. Instead, they tell me to contact Dell, which is no help because it's not the card that came with the computer. So I have no idea how to get the driver that I need.

Maybe this site can help you find the drivers: http://members.driverguide.com/index.php?companyid=1239&devicetypeid=4&qm0=&ref=&action=wizard_step_3&company=1239&Submit=%A0%A0SELECT+COMPANY%A0%3E%3E%A0%A0

Just messing around a bit, t'became Asilon (a.k.a. Screw Symmetry):

(http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/6619/asilonit2.png)

This creature has 'recently' turned from tripod to bipod, thus the leg-like arm, and the wierd tail protrusions for balance. Right leg (and former front leg) is (was) bigger to serve as a basis for the kick-claw (which on the 'new' arm has gone towards a thumb-like thing). The other eye (gravity-changes-sensitive) is positioned on the other side of the body, along with the mouth.

Foxy eh?

If you press the left arrow key, you can place bodyparts behind the blob. The text 'Front' then changes to 'Back' to show that parts are going to be placed behind the blob.

'print screen' loads the image into the clipboard, then you just go into PAINT, hit CNTRL + V  or Edit/paste, then save as a JPG and upload to photobucket.com or something.
