Title: Hydro @ E3
Post by: Hydromancerx on May 11, 2006, 05:50:29 pm
Well my visit to E3 was exhausting. First I had trouble finding where to get my badge. Then I was told to fill out an application so I did, but then they told me to fill it out on the computer. Then the badger maker did not work and they almost forgot to attach the chip (in which I somehow lost during the day). Then waited in line to get in and once I got in I took a video of the EA booth, then stood in line for Spore. Watched the demo without Will Wright then at the end he snuck in a I told him who I was, but then had to sit though another presentation cause he was doing it. At the end I got to shake his hand and that was it. They kicked me out and sent me to the VIP room.

In the VIP room I waited and met Maxis peoples and could not have a video. However I was allowed to take pictures of little clay models of creatures. After the wait I was allowed to play with the creature editor with Caryl Shaw. In which I tried to make a Naucean. But I used some parts that were not finished and broke the model!! Thus I tried again with my Wooly Grutatherium and did it super fast before they kicked me out. Caryl Shaw said shewould e-mail me a picture of my creature(s). As for questions I really did not get to ask very much. It was rushed and they keep to busy to think. I did learn that many parts are not fixed yet such a tentacles (which I broke). And  its much easier to make a creature on the fly than it is with a set plan to follow. All in all I did mange to give them my resume with my e-mail on it ;) (sneaky me). And you can all dissect the videos and pictures I have for info. All I can say is Maxis is good to keep you distracted so you don’t ask too many questions.

I am disappointed I did not get an interview with Will Wright or an autograph but I was glad to meet part of the Maxis team and see what the editor is first hand. All I can describe it as is clay. Cause it has a much different feel than say other 3D programs like Maya or 3DS. In fact I was having trouble using it because I am so use to those other programs. Will makes it look easy. But of course I think it was harder because I had something in mind I wanted to make rather than just playing and making something new.

Thanks for the quick update.  You missed a lot of videos and info while you were there, particularly the 2007 release from WW.

So, in ur oppinion was it worth the money to play with the creature editor? I'd give an arm and a leg for that...

Ah well I kind got the just of that because of all the stuff they still had to put in. They have alto done but so much to go to make it work. In short asking for the demo would have been disappointing because it has many bugs. Such as a person ahead of me's creatures head twitched funny. And of course my Naucean's tentacles kept making more tentacles as you moved it on the head. Also i did not see any Naucean specific parts. The foot i thought was acully a hoof and the mouths were all basic.

Course if they ever need a beta tester they have my resume ;) I will be happy to break Spore any day *laughs*

Yeah the idea I got from the Robin Williams vid is that it is quite buggy, because his creature crashed the game.  I think it had something to do with it's back being it's front but I don't know.

Gah Hydro, awsome stuff! We will have to talk later tonight, just send me a PM of when you will be on or I will do vice versa since I am at a friends house adn I don't have access to MSN. Sounds good though, plus the thought of tentacles is promising, and from what I have seen, my Quillaran will be possible. But we can talk about that later.  ;D

hey, just got back from work, lol, I had to play a demo of Quickbooks & Wordperfect. I got to file some papers too! Fun, fun, fun!

Congrats Hydro, sounds like you had a good time and got to experience how complete Spore truly is. I feel bad for Wright after reading the Gamespy article - having to play the demo for 9 hours straight is...tedious!

I hope he remembers to comeby the forums more often now, and nice job with the resume, lol. I'm sure a good amount of people from these forums will get picked based solely on their creativity.

Can't wait for the video/images!

They should manufacture those Spore figurines, I'd buy everyone of them.  By the way, that little red Spore creature thing on their bottom shelf looks a little assymetrical, so maybe there can be a little asymmetry?

After lookig over my video i noticed one fact i am not sure we already knew. but it was you can only travel to close systems in the UFO age and you slowly get upgrdes to travel farther and farther until you can use blackholes as wormhole system of gate travel. I am sure you guys will find more tidbits after i get this thing on to the net.

Ah, yea, now what Will was taking about in the IGN video makes sense. In it, he says you'll be able to find upgrades for your UFO on planets in systems, and then you'll eventually be able to use blackholes as gates.

Awesome, I was hoping it wouldn't be as easy as pointing and flying 100000s of lightyears...

Not a big surprise considering thats a staple of real life and all scifi games.  There is always a distance limiter.  We are looking forward to the videos.  I hope you got to see the one with Robin Williams in it.  Very funny stuff.

Cool deal on E3 and all that jazz. I think I'll have to make it a lifetime goal to go to E3, it's like the holy land for gamers or something, and seeing even just still pictures of the place is awe inspiring. But the thing I saw in this thread that really made me want to comment is that cake. What is that monstrosity? And how many have died trying to eat one? I mean my god, the snowballs and twinkies alone would be enough to incite a sugar induced coma and a few heart attacks. Things like that just shouldn't exist. Also the little model/action figures of the creatures are kick ass. They've got a limitless goldmine there in terms of merchandise. And to the individual who made the comment on the girls: Know you nothing of the booth babes?

Yeah, basically they just stand around the booths looking pretty to attract people to their booth. What a game lacks in quality, it makes up for in booth babes. They never know anything about games, and are usually pretty dumb. They really don't have anything else to contribute other than some nice scenery, and in a giant expo full of geeks, it's quite welcome. I don't know why some girls are so "repulsed" by that... if you're gonna hate someone for it, hate the booth babes for taking the job, not the game companies for offering it. But even then, it's their life to do with as they please, so I don't see that anyone has the right to judge them for it.

They might not be dump just terribly terribly bored, I mean if you where an attractive lady who is standing next to a screen in a silly costume and being ogled by geeks would you be up for a riveting conversation? Especially if people keep coming up to you asking you about a game which you couldn't care less about.

Hey hydro, welcome back :P

I can't wait to see the video, seems like at least we will have water and flying creatures after all, asymmetric ones as well as we can see on the pictures you took there's a shark-like creature and we can now confirm those are indeed wings on the other one. Did you notice where the wings were in the ceature editor? :P

Currently it has been running for 3 hours and has done 180 MB out of 1769.4 MB at this rate it can do aprox 60 MB per hour which means it will take around 30 hours to complete *sigh* I am trying to chop it into parts. Anyone have any ideas on how to make a 1769.4 MB MPEG smaller?

Great stuff Hydro, gratz. Can't wait to see the video.

RE: The asymmetrical creature. IT'S A STOMACH, it said on the first site that had the pics, and not a spore model AFAIK. The only thing I could thing of would be that it was like a 'Food advisor', similar to the guys in Black & White, though I don't really think it would fit the style of the game.

Use a video conversion program that lets you configure the resolution, video quality, fps, and audio quality. I'm fairly skilled with these things, but seeing as it'd take that long to upload it, I think it's best if you quickly d/l Sony Vegas and re-render it to the most acceptable size/quality.

Here: http://download.sonypictures.com/current/vegas60d.exe

For the love of God, don't post an MPEG. They're huge and extremely uncompressed. Get some good encoder, like DivX or something. It can shrink that file to something like 100-200 megs.

Boy I'm glad I have cable, that will take me like, what, 5 minutes?

Even for cable, 1700 mb is a pretty big file.

The Wired video took me 10-15 minutes at about an even 500+ kb/s for the 420 MB file.

pretty big?  pretty big???

Use different wording and the size becomes much clearer...  it's 1.7 gigs!

It's like saying 500 cents (oh just 500 cents) but it's actually 5 dollars  :)  you can rent a DVD and get some decent snackage for that.

Yea... 1.7 gigs is pretty freakin huge. Hell, that would send some people over thier monthly bandwith limit. I had a program that allowed you to convert files to divx files extremely easily and it was free, but I removed it a while ago. :|

Still a mpeg to divx google search should help find a program...

If audio isn't important (ie if it's just the standard E3 ambient noise) you may want to take that out too, that'll remove a huge chunk of the file size.
Title: Re: Hydro @ E3

Does it show you making your creature???

First part shows the EA Booth with Spore Trailer with Suround-O-Vision.
Next Part is the Public Demo with some Maxis Guy
Next Is the Demo Again with Will Wright

Note each make a diffrent creature in the editor and talk about diffrent things as they go on that familar demo path. For instance Will drowns the toucan aliens when attacking their alien outpost using the terraforming tools.

If audio isn't important (ie if it's just the standard E3 ambient noise) you may want to take that out too, that'll remove a huge chunk of the file size.

The audio is important sicne they talk about some stuff diffrent from the other videos. ALthough its generally the same sicne they follow the same script to follow.

Probably but not any time soon. It was too buggy to be given out now or even within the year i think. If i had to guess from what i saw i would say early 2007 demo then late 2007 the game. But thats just a guess. I claim no confirmation on these dates. Its just from my impression.

Well, as the editor broke when he tried(the tentacles were acting up, they were having problems with them, in fact, they were thinking at one point of removing them but decided against it), Carol Broadshaw said she'd send him a picture of a Naucean when they worked it out.  :)

From what I understood it was very hard to make them look good. But what would aliens be without tentacles? They had to keep them.

They had to keep them.
It wouldn't be Naucean if it didn't have the tentacles coming from the mouth, now would it?

well, tenatcles are very difficult to make and make realistic, i think they should just drop them, i mean the 2 hand tentacles can just be arms

I'm glad to hear you had a great time Hydro!  Too bad Will Wright was too busy to answer any of your questions but it is still pretty cool that you got to meet him in person.  There is so much excitement going on right now and everyone wants a little piece of him.  As soon as it all dies down I'm sure he'll be snooping around the forums to do some research on the audience and you may be one of the first to know about a beta or demo!

I can't wait to see your video but I wonder whether there's any more info for us to learn.  It will be sweet to see more creature possibilities however, and I'm sure we're all dying to see a picture of the creature you created!  Awesome pictures of the figurines too!  And way to go on breaking the creature editor!! haha  :D

I'd really like to have a glance to the vid where Hydro tries to build the naucean. It's not Will wright or someone else we don't care about, but a fan who has been thinking about creating creatures with this tool for a huge time, has been dying for information, and -as we all do- expects a lot from the game. So his way to look at the editor has to be far different than, say, the one of Robin Williams.

I really expected much more comments from hydro about the creature editor. What he was able to see, what he was told about it, and his opinions. I find him too quiet about his experience.

a working creature editor and save program (so any creatures we make with it could be used in game when we get the game) would easily keep me entertained until release and it would attract a hell of alot of attention for spore, but the texture program isn't even close to being finished

you dont even need a texture program at the moment i bet most people would be mroe then happy with just the editior and the parts, i would be happy with just minulpilatating a blob

I think they should release the editor because 1.Like Brutus said it would attracted a hell of alot of attention for spore 2.It would keep people entertained until the reall thing 3.If there's any bug's or anything that need's improveing then they can fix it before they release the reall thing 4.People might lose intrest in Spore (not includeing my self)because of the long waiting period.

Title: Re: Hydro @ E3
Post by: stuck on May 13, 2006, 09:05:50 am
If anything is broken in the CE, its the parts. Hydro said that the tentacles duplicated themselves, and they still need to add cybernetic parts and such. If anything will crash the game, it's the parts, not the texture. They may still need to add some parts like wings and fins and etc..

But wouldnt like ANYTHING demo vershion of the editor who care's if it crashe's it's not the reall game and they will fix those problem's i would rather have something to hang on to till the reall thing rather than just picture's and video's.

Ha, he's not a fanboy?  Of the 1562 currently registered members, he's the 44th highest-posting member on this forum with 600+ posts.  And he's only been on this board for less than two months :)  I still remember when he would post a million questions about if this game would have epic space battles in it, because if it didn't he wouldn't get it.  I think he's just upset that it's not been shown in the game, if it's even a feature.

I've said it before and I've said it again, if you want to play a video game that has cool epic space battles, this probably isn't the game for you, especially if you don't care about the other stages of the game.  If there even are battles where you fight between fleets, I doubt it's going to be better than games specifically designed around this type of gameplay.  Like Will Wright has said, it's sorta like he's taking simplified versions of a bunch of genres and combining them.  Look at how the creature combat worked.  It was almost MMO-like, where you just selected the type of attack and the computer did it, rather than an active action combat game.

So, yeah, I guess what I'm saying is quit complaining :)

I'd prefer building/plant editors mostly to add to the pre-release content but a creature editor would probably do the most in helping work out any kinks still in the program.

True, but the creature editor is such a large part of the game I doubt they'd release that free.
I could see any number of the more minor editors becoming a demo though.
The cell one just makes the most sense because it probably still has a good amount of options and since it's so early in the game it isn't really spoiling anything later.

THERE IS NO NAUCEAN IN THE VIDEO

There was no video allowed in the VIP room or pictures of the computers. The Demo i took the video of was from the PUBLIC demo. Which if you visited E3 anyone could wait in line in and get in to see. The mini figures were in the VIP room and i asked if i could take a picture of them and they said ok but only them. I even asked to take a still of my Naucean. But she said she would send me a picture of it (the Woolly) and maybe the Naucean if she could fix it up first. And i said "Sure!! Have at it!"

Hydro, I have a question about the creature editor.

When you use the mousewheel on the spine it seems to expand the body in all the axis. Are you able to adjust that so a creature's body might be thin but tall instead of just round?

Like...

For some parts. Cause i noticed you could expand diffrnet parts with diffrent handels. But i am not sure on the body itself. I was having trouble with the scroll wheel.

Hydro did you happen to see any1 from G4?

Yes and no. I saw them on a screen talking but i did not see them live. I never found exactly where they were talking from. However i did see the radio station there. Too bad i did not have a radio with me.

After listening to Steve's podcast i remembered something he did not mention. He was talking about symmetry of parts on each side or one in the middle. Apparently when i first got a hold of it the symmetry button was not turned on and i had only one leg put on the creature. This is a very important thing because that means if you want to you can have asymmetrical creatures!!!  ;D ;D

I will post more info as i remember or get asked questions. Since it was just so overwhealming and i was so excited and so much to take in!!
Title: Re: Hydro @ E3
Post by: Vib Rib on May 13, 2006, 10:49:18 pm
Wow. Well, that answers the heated question about creature symmetry, I suppose!

Could the symmetry also affect width or thickness of parts? If scrollwheel modifies the radial width universally, all the parts would be cylindrical at that point in the spine.
Again, it comes back to the whole "can limbs and body parts be flattened" question.

Not for a non symmetrical part. It was only when they were mirrored with symmetry. Because i started out putting flippers on the Nauceans tail and they gave me one at a time and i had a hard time lining them up. But then after i put on the leg she realize the symmetry button was not on. So later i re-put on the flipper on that back in which it was perfectly lined up symmetrically. Thus if you put on parts asymmetrically then you could in theory have like one huge arm and one tiny arm on the other side.

Woo-hoo!!!  Huzzah for asymmetry!

Hey Hydro (or anyone for that matter!), do you know if it is possible to link legs together at certain joints, like at the knees?  I don't mean like the front limbs of Buttface, but more like an arrangement that looks more like an X, where the center of the X is where the knees interlock, or an arrangement that looks like a y, where the ankle joins with the knee.  That would look really funny, and the locomotion of the creature would be insane!

But a perfect creature is symetrical, just look at most of those of nature. But i'm very happy on the fact 'we can' don assymetrical creatures. So, je stomach figurine is possible. That's a good point, the player is most free than i was guessing by seeing we can't place a leg on a side whitout do it on the other.

I think Hydro knew all along and was just torturing us to see how long th debate would go on!

Acually i have not been reading as many posts as normal. Sorry if i missed that debate.

I have a question. Can you put body parts on top of other body parts? Like arms on feet,  legs on arms, hands on legs, etc.

I am not sure i mean i have seen arms on arms before and Robin Williams had noses on noses. So if those are possible then maybe. But i did not see first hand when i did mine.

Sorry I couldn't make it. My transportation fell under at the last minute and I couldn't scrounge up a replacement. My cell phone was also lost and dead (else I could have called myself to find it =p ), but I eventually found it. It all really sucks, and I don't suppose you'll be heading back there next year, either, eh?

Oh, and as a general thing that I tell people: Pictures of E3 make it look like it's dark, as if the expo is held outside at night. But it's actually inside and is well lit with soft carpeting!

Well i am sorry about your phone it would have helped if you could have called me! I was looking all over and called ya. Oh well. You should have gone! It was SOOOO fun!! And you could have met Will Wright!! I mean he was doing the public demo for goodness sakes!!

A 10 year oild kid who was homeschooled, and then went to college for 4 years. I happen to know one back in the late 90s. Then another kid (a little older - 12 I think, but he was just taking 1 class because his homeschool program didn't offer it).

In many cases, home-schooling is quite beneficial, especially in certain areas where public schools are breedings ground for all sorts of negative influences. Home-schooling has many features, as well as drawbacks, but it's not as simple as, "they dont get to make any friends."

(I am, and always have been a public school student)

It's not really a good thing.  They don't develop socially.

Homeschooled kids do act different (no offensine to anyone). But they get better when they reach adulthood (duh). I have someone at my school who was homeschooled. He never raised hi hand to talk. He asked who the "School legends were". And one time i went to his house and he showed me a nice computer game, then he left me to watch TV and eat Cheez-its, i asked if i could have some, he said no because the box was empty. I asked if he had anything to eat, he said yes, he told me to get it myself, that was the first time i was there so i didn't know were anything was, i asked him and he just pointed , i went to the room he pointed to, it was the laudry room and he laughed and laughed at me. Then again, that guy was just screwed up any way so I'm not sure if homeschooling had any thing to do with that...

I do know another kid that is homeschooled and he hates it. He is allso very mean and tends to stick to one person each day, defending him/her when someone makes a non-offensize joke. However, he makes sense and is very nice and times. He allso has very few friends, and wishes he went to schoo with us because we know alot more people than him. (he lives right next to the school!)

Yeah YouTube is annoying that way, doesn't tell you it's over the limits untill after it has spent all the time uploaded.
If you chopped the movies into even smaller parts (so they are within the limits) and uploaded them on YouTube it would be just as good as the full movie.

A few things I learned from Hydro's videos that haven't been discussed on this forum before:

1.  Cut and Paste function in creature editor: The first presentation copied the hind legs and feet to place another pair on the front. Presumably this will be in all the editors.

2.  Creatures can sneak and ambush. The first presentation used a sneak mode where the creature ducked down low and crept up on its prey.

3.  Different parts have different stats. The first presentation mentions changing from feet with a high stealth rating to feet with a high speed rating.

4.  Civilizations have heat-seeking missiles. In the second presentation, the UFO dodges "heat-seekers" from the planetary defenses.

Oh and jsut so people know (since i was not exactly positive on the name so i left it out, but i e-mailed back confirming the name), Caryl Shaw (you know the nice lady who spoke about Spore at GDC 06) was the person who helped me in the Spore editor. So just to let ya know i met Will Wright in the public demo room, Caryl Shaw in the Spore VIP room and was all contacted and eventually met Tiffany Spencer the Seinor PR manager for EA. Oh and while i was waiting in the room there was some big wigs in the room whom i was told was one of the founders of EA. Which was preaty cool!!  ;D

I think Science, or Research would make more sense, as at this point you're upgrading your civilization to get the UFO, and eventually upgrade the UFO with various gadgets and tools.

I agree: the musical note is probably cultural points, the spears represent military might and the building with the columns the diplo points.

Isn't it sad?! :(

What's even sadder is that we now have less of a clue what's happening than we had then...

Yeh. I'm sure eventually we'll all get bored slagging off ea and just start again from where we were before we heard of a septemberish release date as remotely concrete.
