Title: Steve is great.. but...
Post by: Smood on March 08, 2006, 06:35:17 pm
Just 1 thing that I find a bit strange... why does steve sometimes say word phonetically, for example..

Compass: Its commonly pronounced 'cumpass' (with respect to what appears to be an italian accent but even canadian or US accents),
but steve says 'COHMP-ISS'

Another is Mage (as in wizard), its pronounced 'Mayge'
but steve says 'MAH-GE'

I know its a insignificant point but was just wondering why he pronounces these terms like that (there are others).

But respect to you steve you are doing great work!

I don't know why you need to nitpick on how words are pronounced. and I believe Steve is from NYC, so it could be his accent.

It is his accent. I haven't heard it anywhere else, but I am told by my sister who has been to Manhattan that he sounds like he has a light New York accent. It just affects his speech. :)

It isn't phonetically, if it was, he would be saying EM-AI-GEE for Mage, instead his accent makes him say Mashje. ;)

I can tell because I have been through several years of speech therapy to correct my "R" and "S" and "SH" sounds, with my accent sounding very New England/ Bostonian, where I would replace an "R" sound with a "W" sound and drop the first consonant of every word.

Steve's accent causes his "SH" sound to bleed into his "J" sounds, which is a very minor change. It means the movements he uses to create the "J" sound are similar to his "SH" sound, which is common in the North Eastern United States.

I hope that answered your question. :)

I thought it was spelled Baldur's gate not Boulder's gate.

It's my accent, nothing more. Slight NYC accent added to the fact that I try to speak clearly which can result in some odd pronunciations.

And I thought it was "Baldur's" (hard "a") Gate and not "Boulder's" ("o" for the "a") Gate as that is what the guys at Bioware always said when I talked to them. But what do they know! ;)

Steve pronounces Baldur's Gate with the "A" sound from CAT, where as I pronounce it with the "A" sound from WALL.

Apples and Oranges. ;)

My fault what I meant was what. 'B-aul-der's gate rather then B-ah-lder's'

But anyways  thanks for the reply Steve.

Good thread, everyone needs to start doing mp3 questions for the show so we can make fun of all of our accents, not just steve's. :P

Anyways this thread reminded me of my old runningback coach/sociology teacher. He couldnt say any words with the "TH" sound to it. So instead of him saying,"Three hundred thirty three and a third" he'd say something like "Tree hundred tirty tree and a tird" was pretty funny, and he used it all the time on purpose while he was teaching/telling jokes or whatever, quite comical.

And I kid, I know no one was making fun of steve, you were just wondering  :P

It wouldn't be such a good idea to make fun of Steve, I don't think.... Id imagine itd be something to the caliber of making fun of the Godfather. Next thing you know, you were banned from ever purchasing a copy of Oblivion and Spore.
NOOOOO!!!!!11!!!!

I think when it comes to how people pronounce the names of games and things in games that you should be prepared to hear anything.

I mean... we have all heard people call game related things by completely different names than by what we think they are.

Am I right?

Like that whole "Lahdihm" thing?

Actually, you probably don't remember that.

I like how he says Mare-io.  His accent is most apparent though, when he goes into rants.

Baldur is actually pronounced bal(hard a)-dur, with the fur sounding a bit like duor, only shorter. Kind of Mordor language "ur". It's a nordic word, so I should know.

I'm thinking of making a drinking game where you have to take a swig everytime Steve says something is his favourite game/movie/book/ of all time.
The only problem is that I don't want to be responsible for all the hangovers the next day.

Steve's inability to speak really irks me at times. Combine that with his horrible lisp and it is a wonder that anyone actually even listens to this podcast.

ps. it is even worse when he has guest speakers that sound like they're still going through puberty.

Then why do you listen? Please, be respectful. You know where this is heading. I advise you to stop.

I'm beginning to do that in my oral english. It's annoying, but I only do it in a few words and not very often. I have a problem pronouncing "Three" though. I spit all over my table when I try and say the "Thr" sound. Argh

Personally, I think Steve does a fantastic job with the Podcasts. He ranks #1 in my list of 'casts to listen to. One small issue I have recently is very noticable in Podcast 49, the phrase "With that being said..." is used sooo often it drove me nuts. =)

Unless I miscounted, he said it 49 times in episode 49.

I second that. Single point of annoyance though.. great podcast. I'm from the Netherlands and listening on quite a regular basis, so big thumbs up to you Steve!

Same here. :P

Though I noticed in the latest podcast that Steve says "Excetera" instead of "Etcetera"... And he says it like a gazillion times like that... Either that or I need a new pair of ears.. :P

And it's actually all pretty understandable. Podcasts can be worse, just listen to the GDC2006 recap with the co-host from Texas (or at least he sounds like he's from texas)...

Speaking of pronunciations, how do you guys pronounce "Chocobo"?

I find all of Steve's sayings and mispronunciations amusing, and kind of add to the charm of it. I don't know why it matters so much to all of you. It's just the way he talks; it really isn't that noticeable

Geez people he talks pretty damn normal compared to most other gamers. He could always have a harsh voice or lisp. We would be doomed then :(

No kidding.  Ever hang out in any sort of gaming shop for an extended period of time?  I started to feel sorry for the guys that worked there.  I watched the guy listen to this kid describe the entire third level of HL2.  Poor guy.

Choc-oh-bo
Like chocolate.   ;)

I think it's always been pronounced the other way in the games, but I don't think it particulary matters.

He sounds pretty normal all the time... especially when interviewing Greg Canessa  :P

The way Greg said particular made me cringe :D

I've never minded Steve saying "with that being said" all the time - In fact, I've never really noticed it. I know for a fact that I say "or something" all the time, as well as a few other phrases.
