Title: [OG-NC] The Sombrerons
Post by: gec05 on April 06, 2006, 11:22:08 am
The Sombrerons

The Sombrerons are a moderately noble race. They hail from the planet Shivol which lays on the border of the outer rim an middle rim of the galaxy. The other half of the population lives on Beyon, which they've founded after the Halycon War. They since then have fallen into division. Those on their home world Shivol converted into ecologists and shunned their materialistic practices. Shivol was regenerated from their once obliterated planet Shivaruu. During the Halycon War, renegade space pirates held vendettas against the Sombrerons for their rigorous crackdowns against piracy and the location of the Scion Complex. The pirates struck when they were distracted and at their weakest. Thanks to the Nauceans, they regenerated the planet into what is now Shivol. Just like it's predecessor, Shivol is a rugged and rocky desert, but the now eco-friendly Sombrerons wish to change it into a lush forest planet.

Planet

Thanks again to the Nauceans, Shivol now exists as the Sombrerons native world. 60% of the planet is comprised of rugged canyons, ridges, and mesas. 30% of it are desert plains and 10% lush oasis. The planet is rich with underground water and vast catacombs that span across the planet's sub surface. Massive hexagonal mesas are the main trademark of the planet's natural features. (not pictured)

The world map of Shivol. Note how the geography is spotted with pentagon shaped mesas. Situated atop one of the great mesas is the city of Nwen. This city serves as a hub for the planet's own resources and trade routes. The rugged terrain of the Coro Mountain Range has many canyons and quarries that are rich with various gem stones. At the foot of the Bajarro Cascades lies the capital of all mining activites, Heroto. We can also see the vast and desolate Xerodo Desert, which is featured with many salt flats and massive dunes. Spanning across the equator of the planet is the Great Equatoral Oasis. Hidden in a nook of the foothills of the Coro Mountain Range lies the most beautiful natural wonder of the planet, the Oasis of Verdanti. History tells of one Sombreron by the name of Verdanti who once sold fruits and spices no one has ever been able to find on the planet. He keep his secret grove hidden from public knowledge. No one ever found it. But he did leave behind a seed. That seed would help regrow the great oasis after the planet was regenerated by the Nauceans. The City of Verdanti was the original spot where that seed was planted. The secret oasis may have looked as it did in Verdanti's day.

Government

The Sombrerons run one of the most perfect democratic systems in the galaxy. They don't elect executive leaders but do have a robust legislative branch that conducts many governmental procedures of the planet. Citizens vote for laws and representatives to uphold them. Because citizens take a very active part in their government, their electoral system runs continuously and every matter put forth to the legislation is considered.

If any, they'll make great partners. Sombrerons which to maintain a good relationship with those who have great power and influence. They don't want to take over the galaxy politically, just economically. They'll probably make their services to the ViS by selling them slaves they capture.

I pencil draw them. The old fashioned way is the best way, if you know how. Then I scan them and color them in Adobe Photoshop. This is what a common Sombreron entrepreneur looks like. Expression denoted how greedy and proud Sombrerons are about their business. This one is a common slave trader looking forward to doing business with a valued customer. I didn't color because I was trying to be quick.

This is their homeworld Shivaruu, a desert planet. It has an atmosphere, it's just night with a wee crack of dawn.

Their culture doesn't include religion. Being that they are a secular-based lifestyle, they are atheist. They will however cater to other religions needs for a price.

I'm going to try to make a flash animation of how a Sombreron will walk. The game will probably change all that once it's out. :P But it doesn't hurt to try.

I don't thinks so. I can't see that many ways for the Sombreron to walk with that body configuration, even if it is procedurally based. Unless the game decides to make it walk on it's hands as well of course, then I have no idea. :P

1.5 years late of an update. :P Check the OP for recent changes.

This is the Sombreron homeworld architecture. It's very similar to Wizard of Oz's Emerald City with a touch of Spore. The cities are like a gleaming oasis in the harsh terrain of their planet. Their power conduits are exposed on the exterior of the buildings so as to absorb the heat and radiation of the sun, thus recharging the special gel inside to better conduct electricity better. Being that air conditioning is used a lot, they need an effective power grid to help prevent blackouts. The windows also absorb the sun's rays into the power grid as well.

UFO

This is their standard-class UFO. The Nomad. It's compact and fast, however it's capability to carry heavy weapons is limited and it does need a constant reload of missiles due to it's small reserve. It's armor sports a standard ion fused Torpalian alloy with plasma shielding. It's engines comprise of two rear mounted Wexxian Mach 9 jets and two small wings with consealed weapon stashes.

Fighting

The Sombrerons are rarely aggressive, but have their own code of self defense. Particularly in the more rumble-bumble parts of Beyon City were self protection is needed. The Sombrerons usually maintain a very low profile, which means no body guards. If that fails, they can use a special technique of their own. It works by fooling or confusing the opponent by using their small arms to intimidate them. Then when they least expect it, they slam their powerful locomotive arms or whole torso onto their foes targeting their critical weak points. A whole other set of techniques involves the use of their locomotive limbs alone, but that is a carefully guarded secret.

Victory

After the defeat of the devious Halycon. The Sombrerons could now finally continue their dominance over the galactic market, which nearly slipped out of their hands due to rationed resources that hindered growth. Afterwards, the Sombrerons then flourished in a Golden Age of trade and sales of goods. With most of the galaxy in good spirits, everything was now running smoothly again. Demand for recreation, snazzy hover cars, and TV dinners grew.

Updated with the new C.A.S. political classifications.

Politics

The Sombrerons run one of the most perfect democratic systems in the galaxy. They don't elect executive leaders but do have a robust legislative branch that conducts many governmental procedures of the planet. Citizens vote for laws and representatives to uphold them. Because citizens take a very active part in their government, their electoral system runs continuously and every matter put forth to the legislation is considered.

It looks great. Thank you! ;D

Exodus

Not all was well in the Halycon aftermath. Many of the race's profitable enterprises abandoned their former businesses on the planet. Impatient with the slow process of the planet's regeneration, they formed an impromv convoy of pilgrims searching for a new planet to quickly erect their businesses once again. A heated lawsuit was made to keep them waiting for the Naucean's work to finish which was still due for another 5 years. The case of The Shivaruu Council vs. The Exodus ran for 2 years until the C.A.B. stepped in to settle the matter. The plantiffs eventually lost and the exodus continued. This small band of entrepreneurs would then become known as the founding fathers of Beyon City.

Flora of Shivol

Another one of my old creatures also got a makeover. Formerly known as the Oandidobons, (old name looks tacky) they shall be called Blubberbons. These large mammoths reside mostly in the shady or higher elevated parts of the planet where it's cooler. But they do migrate through the desert during seasonal changes. These creatures are very docile and slow to anger, but when vexxed to it's limits it can be a deadly bull to mess with. Sadly, it wasn't enough to protect these creatures from near extiction. During the Sombreron's feudal past, these were hunted and sold as meat. Their hides were also used for fashion items popular during the era like boots, holisters, and jackets. It was common to see their massive skeletons laying around the desert plains like a scene from the wild west. Very few survived up until the planet's destruction which wiped them out. But concerned preservationists kept DNA samples and revived them. They're still used for comodities, but are now a supervisionally protected species.

The Frontier Era

Before the race was unified and way before Halycon, their society was ridden with constant battles in the pursuits of fortune. Train robberies, gold rushes, bank heists, piracy and more. Capitalism was rampant and very few were considered noble. This Sombreron was one of them. Hired by the then current tottering establishment of democracy, Jerot Valando was a bounty hunter looking for criminals to either capture or assasinate depending on the desires of his clients. Though his reputation as a good or bad guy is uncertain, he was considered one of the greatest frontiersman ever to roam the Xerodos.

So, what are they?

Their ears are always were they have been, they just took on a new shape and they don't double as their eyebrows anymore. If they were more realistic they wouldn't appear as they would now but more like their previous form.

The Frontier Era (cont.)

The Fronteir Era was the last modern age before they reached unity and their affairs into space. They were adventurous times frought with many conflicts and different sub-cultures clashing to earn a worthy title. Jerot Valando fits in just one of 3 major cultures that influenced their world.

The Leather culture was the rough and rowdy cowboys of the three cultures and made their wares of raising Blubberbon cattle and innovating their current military technology. Their capital city is Nwen.

The Jade culture was the more cynnical and aristocratic culture. They too innovated their technology, but for more civic purposes. Their look is a combination of Earth's Egyptian/Arabian cultures. Their capital city is Verdanti.

The Reed culture is the least technically inclined. But they dominate the catacombs and quarries, specializing in mining precious gems and stones. They are indigenous and hardy mountain people yet are the most benevolent of the cultures which is why they mostly isolate themselves from the rest of the world in the rugged mountains. Their look is a druidic desert indian style and their capital is Heroto.

They're either mixed variations of the other 3 or neural ones. Nothing significant to mention there.

Eligecos, your art is amazing! I well and truly envy you! Do you just draw it and colour with Photoshop or another program?

I use Flash. The paintbrush in Flash givs me that unique look on the outlines. Moreover, I use a pen tablet mouse.

A graphics tablet is a computer input device that allows one to hand-draw images and graphics, similar to the way one draws images with a pencil and paper.

A Graphics tablet consists of a flat surface upon which the user may "draw" an image using an attached stylus, a pen-like drawing apparatus. The image generally does not appear on the tablet itself but, rather, is displayed on the computer monitor.

With most drawing tablets can't you put your original pen and paper picture on the tablet then just trace over it?

Don't got one. Takes less space. I'd be buying one anyway. Avoid pencil lines completely. Much easier.

I wouldn't doubt you can. Some even let you remove the plastic covering the actual tablet and you can put  photo or drawing inside so you don't scratch the original.

Drawing it on PC gives you cleaner lines Hydro. If you want your images to have solid vector-styled or cel shaded drawings, pen tablets are the way to go.

Count Concordius. He may look like some pale and spotted old coot, but he is the most dangerous outlaw bandit, devious mastermind, and a notorious mafia godfather. He is Jerot's arch nemesis and always manages to escape capture from the bounty hunter. It took 10 years before the two meet in a final confrontation. Sadly, both of them were lost in an explosion that destroyed Concordius' base. It is unknown if either one of them survived, but they we're never seen again. This bitter sweet triumph marked the last great event that ever occured during this era and started a movement to forming the planet's unified civilization to end such conflicts.

Standard line Frontier Era pistol. Model 88Mzq-2, nickname: "Powie"

The Powie is an all-round handheld gun. Capable of shooting up to 2 consecutive plasma bullets on each pull of the trigger. Bullets were made of a hybrid titanium and are charged with a residual amount of plasma when fired. This extra heat enabled it to pierce deeper into metals by melting into objects and created larger bullet holes. It has a small laser recticle below the barrel for aiming. It has efficient cooling to avoid overheating and has recoil absorbers to help maintain stability. All these features were necessary since most Sombrerons didn't have very strong and calaced forearms. Other heavier guns were especially designed to be used with their more powerful locomotive arms.

Meaning: The green star of prosperity is surpassed by the endless blue stream that the Sombrerons ride along, raising the standards of true prosperity without end. The white that represents their pure and perfect democracy helps continue this stream's endless journey.

The Great Equatoral Oasis is a very diverse lanscape. Some of it litters the desert while others niche along canyons as depicted here. But it all runs along the equator of the planet. The Verdanti race make their wares and homes along this humid and lush jungle. They know much about produce and spices and make it their trademark as a market amongst the planet.

Monnies

Height: 1.5 ft.
Weight: 10 lbs.

Monnies are popular pets. They're compact, intelligent, and clean. They do eat a lot, however, due to their high metabolism. But they produce little waste and absorb much of its food since it is a highly active creature. They do exibit various moods and behaviors not usual in animals, it's as if it is capable of sentience. They are extremely affectionate and do require a lot of attention as they can get reckless when left alone. Such habits are what make these creatures a favorite pet. It is not unusual if an owner obsesses about their Monnie by entering it into pet shows, accessorizing it with jewels and fashion, and feeding it gourmet foods.

Diet

The Sombreron are omnivors. However, their consumption of meat is light. They do like a lot of vegitation in their foods. Their favorite native fruit is the Qube fruit. Qube fruits come in many colors and rectangular forms. Each has a distict flavor or variation of flavor from the original breed. The Forchin specimen (as depicted) is the origin of all these variations and flavors. The fruit is a part of everyday eating for the Sombrerons. It is even said to help you feel motivated to achieve anything.

For the Beyonian Sombrerons, nothing was ever enjoyable as it was back home. Sure, they make a killing in Beyon City. But day by day, it becomes a daunting task to deal with people. Races from different backgrounds and opinions are difficult to handle, even for the Sombrerons who make it a point to look out for the interests of others. It's what draws business in. A salute must really go out to those who deal with shoplifters, nitpicky customers, cleanups on aisle 7, and other obnoxious types that travel from every scummy part of the galaxy.

The Sombrerons love their Monnies. Going so far as to educate them and dress them in fashionable clothing. They hold many divisions of contests to show of their breeds and to promote them to the galaxy as a popular pet (/food). Sombrerons are working with top bio-engineering scientists to create the most versetile breed that can survive in most interplanetary conditions and ones that can survive in specific conditions. They will do anything to make sure these creatures can reach the broadest market in the galaxy reaching into mediums such as merchandise and entertainment.

Oh, and I think that's the first real genuine female Sombreron I drew. :P

Sombreli are the microscopic brick that make up the Sombrerons as we know. Life for the primordial Sombreli started very simple but were very weak. Soon thereafter, they developed personalities way before they even became multicellular. But because of their weakness most of them cooperated and fused together. At this point they realized growing in mass would help them survive the harsh microscopic life. Then they started to compete for more members for each cluster. Cellular war broke out. Clusters would assimilate any last Sombreli that remained alone.

Eventually they evolved into the Sombrout. It's previous behaviors to accumulate developed into a hoarding behavior at this stage. It scouts and collects any objects into it's home that appear shiny or luminescent. If a Sombrout runs out of space, it will conceal and bury it's home and find a new one. It can remember where all of it's hoards are stored. Some Sombrout form partnerships or even colonies to amass greater hoards. This behavior isn't rare but occasional.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Huggs!!! ;D

Beyon city wasn't much appreciated by the Sombrerons who stayed on their home planet. Now they despise it's success. However, most have admitted there's no other choice but to join them. This has created a division of ideals and values between Sombrerons. Whereas Sombrerons who hail from Shivol are generally kind and modest, those who travel to Beyon city are instantly obsessed with riches and success. These will in turn become one of the many corrupt-minded business leaders in the city. Fortunately, Beyon is regulated by a board of benevolent races known as the Entrepreneurs Guild of Beyon. This union sets a code for business leaders to follow and guarantees a reputable backing with intergalactic laws. If a business leader is not recognized by the guild, they will not gain representation when faced with officials. History tells that this guild was formed by a Shivolian Sombreron who was concerned about his fellow brothers who recklessly conducted business.

Beyon now thrives on the help of other races who joined on the construction of this city. With the guidance of the guild, businesses can expect to have satisfaction among it's customers which brings them back for more.

Native to Shivol is the Pansywood. These massive plants grow up to 30 stories tall and are natural water storage tanks. However, they have an extremely solid bark which is difficult for an individual to attempt to siphon it's rich water supply. They tend to grow along foothills and canyons of the mesas that dot the desert landscape absorbing any water runoff that may drain from the peaks.

Huggs, that's awesome. The best part was the almost-not-noticeable "alien pigeon" that's staring off into space. :D

ANd Gec, also very cool. It looks realistic. In a cartoony way... yeah. But seriously, very cool.

I like the pigeon too. ;D
_____

During the Frontier era, most Sombrerons prefered personal over mass transit. Hence they use bikes a lot much like this one. The most popular, as seen here, was the Sand-Slasher. It can reach speeds of up to 300 mph (482 kmph). With the help if a micro fusion reactor, it's capacity is only a fraction of normal reactors but is still powerful and has great mileage.

Hey, normal cars reach 100 mph or more and you never really see any driving that fast on a daily basis. Driving conditions are pretty spacious and clear while speeds generally stay to 100-150 mph. 300 is just a maximum.

Gec, the deathtrap comment was just as much about the fusion powered part as the top speed.  And deathtrap isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Realistic?

I'm pretty convinced a realistic look will be very difficult to translate into Spore, especially with their fanned ears. The second design was meant to accommodate the available parts I was vaguely certain will be in the game for sure. Yet, it strays from their original look. This third design was supposed to adapt their first design yet still maintain a cartoony and simple look. Though with the current feedback I'm getting I might have to go back to the drawing board.

Ultimately though, I will attempt to create their first design once we get that GOSH DARN SPORE DEMO!

Current events:

The amount of contact between Shivol and Beyon has always been sparse since their exodus after the Halycon war. The side effects of the terrorist attack on Shivaruu centuries ago has now only reached it's finality. Back then, a few ancestral tribes started a movement towards the preservation of nature, which they thought would help change their image toward other races who were distasteful of their gluttonous capitalism. They proposed to become ecologists. Sombreron capitalists knew this would impair their progress in galactic financial domination. They quickly set up shop on a planet which is now Beyon City. Business boomed three fold than it ever did on Shivaruu.

Once Shivaruu was rebuild into Shivol, both Beyon and Shivol shared a mutual relationship. One that over the years began to fade. Shivolians adopted the Wexxian way of life while Beyonians continued their obsessive materialism.

A new alternate design for the Sombrerons. For quite a long while I had the design of their head thought out, but I never came up with a good body design until now. With the exo patch it helped me come up with something. Now if they could just give me the exact parts for the head I would be a happy panda.

Just to give you an idea of the contrast between the Sombrerons on Beyon (left) and on Shivol (right).

Though life for Sombrerons on Beyon haven't changed, Shivolites (as they are now called by Beyonians) maintain as simple lifestyle through enlightenment and ecologism. Though they have become isolationists, they warmly welcome any familiar race or those that respect their purpose.

The Shivol tribe's new home in the Novus Cluster is located on the Techro system. The tribe is most particularly fond of the gas giant Techro III and it's moon, which they named New Verdanti. The population predominantly resides on sky ports and cloud cities on the gas giant, which has a breathable stratosphere. The Sombreron artificially preserve and stabilize the atmosphere with trillions of airborne spores which convert the gases into a composition similar to Earth's. The spores can remain airborne indefinitely since there is a stable gust of 35 mph winds at this level. Consequently, the Sombreron can also harvest continuous wind energy. But what they are most proud of is the moon New Verdanti. It is the focal point of their research on plant life. They take great care of it's environment, which is why they prefer little urban interference by observing the moon from Techro III. They now hope to discover new remedies and cures for the benefit of all.

Slowpoke update.

Leem Herpish

The first genetically engineered specimen created for the New Ventari biosphere. These creature's are attuned to maintaining the large trees by transmitting pollen and breaking down rotten or damaged compost from the vegetation. They mostly dwell in the forest understory below the canopy and are highly active during the day. Leem Herpish are ground-shy and prefer to travel by branch. They have very sturdy and strong limbs and do have padded grip similar to most geckos, with the addition of sharp claws. They drink water and nectar with long prehensile tongues, letting the fluids trickle into their mouth. They also sing soothingly by humming, which they only do at dawn and dusk. Their florid skin is a leafy green tapered with a sky blue color, white spots, and a white spine mohawk. Their long ears serve no special purpose other than for show and mating.

The Twilight Era

In the age before the frontier era, the age of twilight shrouded the Sombreron people into superstition and fear. The people were ravaged by nightmares and terrible beasts. And an evil warlock with great powers controlled these machinations. His name was Diavo. His tribe of origin was unknown, but he quickly  and mercilessly decimated entire villages without cause. His intentions unknown. But he soon spread fear into those who even doubted the existence of magic. No one knew how he gained such powers, but some even thought of him to be a god. He would later then gain a retched group of followers called the Shroud. However, it was not easy to become one. Many sought to be under his protection, yet very few survived to endure his foul nature.

But hey! New drawings. And they are not from me. In fact, I paid for them. Goes to show you I go out of my way to buy a commission from someone than to just sell my own art.

Sweet! So... are you going to do the "Current Issues" questionnaire for the Sombrerons?

I think every time they are drawn they look a little diffrent than before.

Also how many fingers/toes are they suppose to have on their hands/feet and feet/hands?

Nice!

His face looks very lizard dude-like in that picture.

I wonder if they evolved from similar lizard dudes in their evolution.

The Twilight Era Pt. II

Diavo

Even more mysterious of his nature is his immortality. Average Sombrerons only live to be 70-100 years old. Yet Diavo was centuries old. Just before the last decades until his complete disappearance from the world, he bore a son. His name was Malix. No one knew how Malix was created, but he shared his father's powers, knowledge and immortality. However much to Diavo's chagrin, his son was not like him. When a disagreement between the two arose, Diavo banished him. Still at a young and impressionable age, Malix was found and taken in by a fostering family. He grew to learn understanding and kindness.  20 years later, his true life was destroyed when Diavo destroyed his home and family. Malix then sought out to put an end to his father's tyranny. 5 long years, Malix lived as an exile, searching for his father's whereabouts. When they came to a confrontation, they battled long and hard. There was no witnesses as to what happened at the conclusion of that battle, but a resulting cataclysmic shockwave transformed Shivaruu into a barren desert planet, destroying it's once lush and balanced ecosystem. Both Diavo and Malix have mysteriously disappeared. What was left at ground zero of that conflict were tablets which seemed to hold secrets of Diavo's knowledge. Though no one could truly unlock the powers of Diavo, the tablets left clues to one of his sources of power: Science and Technology. What was once believed to be magic and illusionary trickery was in fact highly advanced alien weaponry. Guns, lasers, explosives and engines. This knowledge first fell into the hands of Diavo's former followers. After the Shroud was dispersed, new ones formed, creating mafias and gangs. At the same time, this knowledge was discovered by just and noble individuals. But one tablet was the ultimate clue to Diavo's true source of power. A source that was hidden so well by a series of clues that everyone struggled to find it first.

The Frontier Era began.

After the Frontier Era and early in the Enterprise Era, bikes were a very popular thing back in the day. The Enterprise Age brought not only a civil and positive atmosphere on Shivaruu, but started a new hot rod greaser culture. Biker gangs formed and would commonly compete in races through treacherous canyons and salt flats. This became so popular that it became an official sport, and still is spiritually continued on Beyon, just on solid, suspended race tracks with sleeker bikes and without the old eccentric greaser flair.

now, maybe if it was a hardcore race with hooves and claws or something that would work.
but it doesn't work with loonytoon monkey chinchilas.

so I'm guessing this is humorous. Especialy because of the lipstick.

Crazen doesn't know what he's talking about, Diavo looks like he would rip you limb from limb.  I think he has kind of a Scar vibe going.

I know. It's just that "hardcore/hooves/horns" don't always have to make something work like a badass villain for everything. It's more about character than looks for me, and that's my style. I tell it how I want to and not everyone has to agree with it.

touche, there is more than way to make something a villain. For example, when I want to make something a villain, I replace its limbs with dead machines and fill it's body cavity with maggots.

but you definitely have a point. I'm not brilliant at characterization. I'd say you are.

Man, that guy always gives me some kind of "creepy friar vibe" for some reason...

In other words, he's awesome.
