Title: Pandora!
Post by: Atari Man on January 29, 2006, 04:20:40 am
If there are any music lovers here you have to check out this site. www.pandora.com It recreates a playlist of random songs depending on what song or band name your first entered in. For example were I too enter "the beetles" it would generate a list of artists with similar qualities. This list will evolve depending on your "like" or "dislike" answers you sumbit for each song that plays. Best of all its completely free...you can subscribe cheaply for added features but the main features are in fact free. It really helped me find alot of musicians I had never heard of but found to be quite good. Go check out this site for more detailed information. Hope everyone else finds Pandora as usefull as I did.

One interesting note about Pandora--it actually caches the mp3 files of the songs it plays to your hard drive. It gives them crazy names, so they're not immediately recognizable, but you can rename them with a .mp3 extension and toss them in your library. Of course, once you exit Pandora, it wipes out the cached files, so you'd have to do it each time you listen.

Mik: Do you know which folder it stores the files in?

I find Pandora to either not have the band I'm looking for, or will come up with something that is not similar at all...

Awesome site so far, looks like it could have a pretty shortlived precarious existence though if people keep exploiting it and advertising methods in which to do so.

I've found some good songs off of Pandora.

I just made a few stations, and they're really getting a lot of songs I like. I was expecting crap like Yahoo! Radio (they played Garth Brooks on my Metal station...those bastards), but this site is really worth a look.

Seems like sometimes their stuff is really hit and miss. And the longer you let it play the more off track they get. I made a station to play Kidney Thieves songs/style of music(sort of gothic industrial rock) and at one point Britney Spears popped up, that's just not right. Actually telling it whether you liked the songs or not does help narrow things down though. I've found a lot of good stuff.

I think this is my new favorite site.  It's free to use and a great way to discover new music.  The only thing that I don't like about the site is that you can only skip a certain amount of songs each hour per station.  Not that much of a big deal, but still a bit annoying regardless

On a slightly different note, I was actually thinking about this site...  If there was a portable music player that could do this, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I'm afraid at this point there's little we can do.  The lobbyists are simply too many and we, too few.
Internet radio is going to change for the worse.  This makes me very sad.

Because of the above, I've found there to be apirate radio station in my city that has been broadcasting eclectic rock for a few years now.  I'm supporting them wholeheartedly.  What they do is illegal, yes, however, I'll be my own judge of what is right or wrong.

If there was a portable music player that could do this, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Heads up (http://somethingglorious.typepad.com/somethingglorious/2007/02/pandora_to_intr.html)
I hope this turns out well.
I'd love to see a portable Pandora headset or something of that nature.
