I'm surprised that you did a review of Baldur's Gate, which is my favorite series of games.

While you're capable of playing Baldur's Gate 2 without any knowledge of the backstory in Baldur's Gate, it would be absolutely foolish to do so since you would be missing out on a great story that explains the beginnings of the main character along with countless other things that create a grand experience that have only been rivalled by its sequel; basically, you're missing out on half of the series!

Any problems with it being dated are completely negated by a mod that allows for you to convert the original Baldur's Gate into the Shadows of Amn engine. The mod can be found here, along with tons of other great mods that enhance the experience of both of the games. http://www.pocketplane.net/mambo/index.php?option=content&task=blogcategory&id=143&Itemid=98

Error in your review;

In Shadows of Amn, not Nin, you begin at level 8-9.
Females can romance Anomen.
Pronunciation: Ball-Dur
Pronunciation: Plane-nar
There are no continuity errors, so do your research.

By the way, why are you constantly putting a negative spin on games that have a lot of content? Seriously, would you prefer to pay $50 for a game you can complete in one go?

I love Baldur's Gate, I reloaded it onto my Laptop recently. Jon Irenicus is my favorite game Shadow, only because he was one of those rare villains that didn't just wait at some High level area's way at the end of the game, but a real antagonist that you must repeatedly face. My character was a Lawful Evil Invoker (a wizard, unsurprising) and I love roleplaying in that game. especially with friends.

EDIT: A grammar Checker would be nice.  :D

I never said that you started at level 1.

Females can romance Anomen.

I never mentioned the female romance plotline, that wasn't an error. That was an omission.

There are no continuity errors, so do your research.

Sure there are, if you have characters from BG1 die on you and then you load up BG2 they will be suddenly alive. That is a continunity error. You should make sure you know what you're talking about before you accuse me of errors.

By the way, why are you constantly putting a negative spin on games that have a lot of content? Seriously, would you prefer to pay $50 for a game you can complete in one go?

Because most people would be put off by a game which requires 250 hours to finish. I am not being negative at all. I am encouraging people to pick up and play this game despite the length.

I guess you are one of those "glass half empty" type of people...

Yes, you did say it, quite clearly at 62:50-60

Aye, you're right, it was just an omission. I merely wanted to tell people so they would know there are female romances.

The story is independent of the player, so what happens in your game has no relevancy on the story of the series. It is like saying that because your character died during one of your games, that he should be dead for the rest of the series.

You said that the only bad thing about the game was the time factor, then you placed the length in a negative light throughout your podcast a few more times, which comes off to me as being absolutely ridiculous. You should be saying, "Hell yes, finally, a developer that went the distance to provide us with actual content!" No, instead, you say crap like, "Despite the length, it is good."

Well, with the profanity blocker, I believe so!  ;)

But I think that was why Leng had a smiley.

if you didn't notice, i took your side in the other thread.  it was probably a gut reflex to seeing peer pressure in action, but i could see why someone might disagree with steve's taste in games (tetris)

I wouldn't stop, maybe people with strange names should tell you how to phonetically say  it. Your not a mind reader, I wouldn't be able to pronounce it either. No big deal.  Btw... I think huggkruka was sort of teasing you.  ;)

oh, i'm listening right now to your retro review.  you made a (common) mistake when you said the infiniti engine was developed for baldur's gate 1.  it was actually developed for fallout 1, but they did modify it to a degree for BG1.

Are you sure? I haven't heard that before, but the two games to look similar so it is possible.

FYI, here is a nice little summary of the Infinity Engine (oh how I miss you) and its use over the years:

Hey guys,

I really enjoyed the podcast. Thank you Steve for a great answer to both of my questions.

I really loved my Amiga 500. You are absolutely right, it was light years ahead of all other gaming rigs and consoles. Games like Shadow of the Beast (one of the best scrollers ever), Barbarian, Battlechess, Defender of the Crown (awesome game), Dragons Lair, Dungeon Master, if you like aircraft sims Amiga had a ton of great ones, Kings Quests (all Sierra adventure games), Sim City, Sinbad (great game), Test Drive...

Those are just a few from hundreds that were amazing games. I remember logging so many hours into Defenders of the Crown, Shadow of the Beast, and Sierra's Quest series...ah man.

My well-off buddy had an Amiga 4000. This was like the super computer of the time. In fact, if you remember they use to use the Amiga 4000 to do all of the best CGI and SFx of that era. Sea Quest, Star Treks...they used (I'm sure you recall) the program bundle called "Video Toaster." Video Toaster consisted of a hardy video editing bundle, along with the original Lightwave 3d app. Ah man...boy was that program difficult to use (and crazy expensive). But this is what got me into 3D art. Now I work with Max and Maya...it's undbelievable how much easier these new programs are compared to Video Toaster.

Anyhow. Thanks for playing my audio question...good show. And I look forward to the next cast.

Steve, you mentioned that you were kinda not overly impressed with the launch games for the Xbox 360.

The Xbox 360 releases here in March (New Zealand) and there are going to be a few more games available to play (see NZ store - http://www.gpstore.co.nz/Games/Xbox-360/). Can you recommend two of your favorite titles so far (even with press demos or videos you have seen – such as Ghost Recon or Battlefield 2) that you have played on the 360?

I have quite a dilemma in terms of whether to wait a little longer or buy it straight at launch with 2 titles...

GREAT SHOW MAN! Loving it, listen to your show while I work. I play my DS more than my Xbox now, which in my wildest dreams I would have never imagined.

Thanks,
Pete

Thanks for answering my question about Diablo 3.  ;D I can't believe you took that risk.

I can officially sleep at night now.

Edit: Also, does anyone know what specific episodes "getting into the industry" was the topic?

I know it would be extremely useful to me.
