Well, abandonware is fine, its just I dont want to start adding them until Gaming Steve gives me the Ok to do so.

Until then, there are plenty of freeware games out now.

Sorry if this is off topic, but I've never received that complaint before. I do include a lot of images on the main page, and it's a hefty 940KB. For anyone on anything other than broadband connection, the download times for a first-time download of a page that size are indeed a bit high.

I can reduce the number of entries I post on the main page to make it a bit better for first time visitors. Thanks for the feedback. ;)

And thanks, Mike, for the mention.  =)

And Steve, I've been enjoying all the great Spore coverage. Keep up the great work with the site!

And to bring this back on-topic, have you been to http://www.tigsource.com/home/ lately? Lots of downloadable games and mostly for the PC.

It looks like it does.  I was very impressed by the ragdoll-ish stuff when the hoppy guy rolled off the tripod's head.  For some reason I've never seen a game actually do collisions well with skeletal-animation character that aren't rag dolls.  um, I'm not sure I really made sense there... The fact that it correctly rolled off of the actual shape of the player character is what I meant.  Usually I see game physics treat animating characters as a larger primitive (cyllinder usually) for collision-response purposes.  Or maybe I just haven't been paying attention enough in new games.

I agree with Borogove, it does.

Also, OP has been updated with great suggestions.

Also Also, Borogove, do you get the word Mimsy from the poem Jabberwocky? Jabberwocky, for the win!

Oh, I just remembered the line "and all the mimsy borogoves." It's where you get your name from as well.

Eek! I brought my own thread off topic!

Keep suggesting the great games, guys!

All mimsy were the borogoves,
  And the mome raths outgrabe.

Glorious nonsense!

For more free games to check out, try the Independent Games Festival submissions: http://igf.com/, I'm trying some of the Half-Life 2 mods at the moment...but so far they are multiplayer ones and noone seems to be on...

Thanks n10sity, added it.

Also, Martham112 submitted this little gem to me. It is a free "creature creator" that is pretty good, if a little less pretty than the ones I've seen floating around. It is easy to use, just look at what I created in very little time

It doesn't function well when walking, mind you, but it looks pretty good for only 30 minutes work put into it. I am sure others can do better.

The program is called BAMZOOKi, and is in the creature editor in the spore experience section.

No, it doesn't. You could make something a thousand times better than that in paint in half the time.

No, it doesn't. You could make something a thousand times better than that in paint in half the time.

Oh, I could? So you are suddenly the expert on my artistic talents now, are you?
Okay, I'll do it your way then.

Wow! Look at that! in only 14 minutes! I beat your time! Woot! Woot! :D

It is an easy to use program, that anyone can pick up. It animates what you create for you, though  you have to tell it how you want it to move. And it has a few skins to choose from, allows you to morph the objects in very little time. As I said, it isn't as pretty as some other ones I have seen, but it can run on many computers that may not be able to run the more complex ones. Also, because it is so simple, even some one with very little artistic talent (like me) can create a simple little creature.

Also, dont troll in my thread.  >:( Your comment wasn't constructive in any way, shape or form.

I noticed you chagned it back to "Borogove's games" instead of "Mike's games".

Not that I mind either way I am just strangely curious what the reason was.

I know, but I am looking for a free game that has similar qualities. I found civilization II, but it was on an abandonware site. Anything that is completely free and shares traits with either animal, tribal, civilization, or any combination thereof, I will add it. I know that is a tall order, but if we can fill that list, then people will have a place to link to when a new member wants to get a feel for what Spore will be like.

Also, the things I already have listed aren't set in stone, if anyone finds a better example for the Spore Experience section, I can replace it.

http://www.blitz1941.com-- I havent played the game yet, but It seems to be a tank version of this next game

http://www.navyfield.com

In Navyfield, up to 128 players may join others and create fleets and engage in naval battles. Teamwork is essential for victory. Aircraft carriers will need a destroyer escort while the carrier launches aircrafts to scout and bomb enemy fleets. Carriers can help cornered destroyers from distances. Operating a warship is not an easy task in order to improve player’s skill, many training missions are included. Navyfield provides diversified battle modes including a capture-the-flag style “Operation Convoy”. D-day style “Harbor Assault” will be implemented soon

YOu can join serveral different countrys and each country has a different tec tree for their boats. Im currently lvl 20 in my ship, and you begin to notice a slight grind after lvl 17 but if you like to play a bit each day then this is for you.

Abandonware is allowed, but there must be a warning that the site is abandonware, and the site must follow ESA notices. (You can tell if it does if it doesn't allow you to download certain games)

Updated the list with additions, and was given a greenlight for abandonware by Steve.

Keep in mind that the site linked to cannot violate forum guidelines in any way.

Also, could any one give me the links to any or all of the four free anti-spyware and protective programs. I want to add them to the Utilities section.

isn't one of the older populace game abandonware and maybe one of the old sim city's?

Yes, but the ESA has a ban on populous, as well as the Simcity that comes out after the original. So even though I can link to it on both of the abandonware sites above, those sites only contain a link to a place where you can buy it.

Mr. Wiz, I just gotta thank you for pointing out Feeding Frenzy.  For the last week or so, I have easily spent more time with that game than all other games combined.

I think it's a better "perfect game" than Tetris :)

Freespace 2: I recently found this game myself and haven't played it much, but from what I can gather many people consider it to be the best space combat flight sim around and it's abandonware, too.  Dust off your joystick and give it a good workout.

This is the best place for info on it that I could find:

I found recently a free pc game online called runescape. I cant say it has the best graphics or gameplay but quite intresting. its a multipayer game that is a sort of WoW kind of game. Its quite a real something for a pc game this big. You can search it straight from a search engine of just putting in www.runescape.com kinda thing.

It is up there, already, I guess I should remove the biased way I have it up there. I have it in really tiny print. And I should change the "review" too, I have to make this thread self sustaining, after all.

Runescape is now in normal sized letters.

Dont. Its the suckiest game ever made. Basically, its a really bad MMO with a novel cash system (well, it used to be novel) and the purpose of the game is to make you so exasperated that you convert a ton of your own money into project entropia money to buy stuff that you think will make the game good...it doesnt. Avoid at all costs.

They're both very difficult, actually.  I was trying to replay X-Com after about a six month hiatus and was completely lost. :p  Once you get the hang of things and pick up a few tips (GameFAQs, anyone?), the game is a lot of fun.

Don't feel bad about the beginner, either.  I'm pretty sure that all of the difficulty levels are the same, due to some error or something.

Greetings all and especially Steve. I've recently caught interest in this site and thought I'd try and join the forum and see what the lighter side of the internet can be like. I'm relatively unknown, but some of you 'may' know me if you've played an odd little game I co-developed called Notrium (http://www.monkkonen.net/notrium.php). Even if you know the game, you're probably more familiar with Ville Monkkonen, a really great guy and a superb person to work on a game with.

If you haven't heard of the game, well this can be your introduction. The game is considered a survival action game by most sites and for the most part that suits it quite well. So if you've played Survival Kids (GBC), Lost in the Blue (DS), than you've got a general idea of what to expect. A more recent game coming out for the DS is getting uncomfortably close to the game we put out as well, the name of which escapes me. Basically you're stranded on an alien planet and must fight to survive, earning one of several endings in the process (nothing fancy, just a ending screen). The idea behind the game though is that it's extremely open ended and has quite a bit that is randomly generated, so it ends up being a bit more like the Elite or Rogue type games you'll find on the net like Nethack.

Unlike any of the forementioned similar games, Notrium is fully moddable, and you can literally create an almost entirely different 2d game using the engine with some creative modding. I actually wrote a FAQ (only 80 pages long) way back when to help the more industrious members of our forum create the mods using the features they had been asking for since its conception. Be fore warned however, modding it takes practice, even though the scripting language used is fairly simple. I apologize if this is too long, as I have been told I'm a bit long winded  ::).  We've got a pretty good forum over there too, but it's getting harder to find ones that aren't flooded with not so kind people.

So yeah, there you go and feel free to check it out and our more recent project (http://www.monkkonen.net/cormoon.php) as well. Keep in mind the project mentioned above is dated, at least in my mind, as we haven't added anything to it in years. There's still some kewl things in there and people were still finding easter eggs I hid, as long as a year away (these were our dedicated forum members mind you). I hope I get a warm welcome here and I intend to participate as much as possible, but I'm a bit all over the net these days.

I would still like people to announce the game here though, so people can be made aware of these changes. :)

Brief bit of history on Notrium, for those interested. A good place to start is the grim2d engine, which most of you are probably familiar with from Crimsonland. Well one of the reasons the grim2d engine is used is actually because the creator of Crimsonland and grim2d was actually part of the original project. Well, I couldn't tell you how it all happened exactly, but lets just say out of about 5 people, Ville was the only one left. By about version 0.8 the game was quite playable and by 1.0 the game was done, but quite simple as well. I was so impressed with what the progress he made I decided to make a mod for the game, basically an expansion.

Well, there were certainly other mods made, but seems mine was the only one put out to the public and thus it got some popularity. All I was originally able to add was a few weapon and items, the game originally wasn't very moddable. Well a new version of Notrium followed shortly, version 1.1 and with it I released a new mod and at this point it seemed to catch the attention of Ville. I somewhat insisted more or less the game become more moddable so that spawned the creation of version 1.2 which was far more moddable and at which point I became officially involved in the Notrium project as a co-developer.

Version 1.2 I believe was the most successful, perhaps just for the time it came out, but it did exceptionally well and even ended up in some magazines that distributed freeware on CDs. Well it wasn't long before the itch to modify the game got stronger, thus spawning version 1.3 which let you mod just about everything from lighting and particles to the AI enemies used. I even built a 2d side scroller mod to help demonstrate how you could do a complete conversion (the engine is 2d overhead). This last major update wasn't just tweaks and such, it was actually huge chunks of code entirely rewritten. I actually had to work with 'broken' versions when I was creating content, getting easier as more features were put back in and some new ones even got added.

Sadly 1.3 wasn't nearly the success 1.2 was and even with a few bug fix, which included new effects and conditions to use when modding, the game fell fairly into obscurity. It did help me build a fairly good working relationship with Ville however and that is quite valuable. One of the major changes in 1.3 to the gameplay was the distinction between races(in 1.2 they were only different in mostly minor ways), giving each race a unique feel and gameplay style to help add replay. Other things that got added were custom particles, a built in map editor and just a host of things that could be changed that were otherwise hardcoded before. I apologize if this is a sappy or pointless story, but I just thought I'd share. This all spans about a 2 year period, so believe me when I say I know first hand about development time.

I actually have played Deus, not to be confused with Deus Ex. The controls were... horrible and the game really wasn't all that playable. It was kind of kewl to play a game like Notrium in 3d, but it was so trying to just do things like attack without throwing your weapon on accident. We are now working on a new game as I mentioned in my original post, but it's probably going to be a year or so before it's finished. Unlike Notrium however, this game will be shareware, and I'm not really comfortable advertising it beyond a simple mention in a thread dedicated to free games. If anyone has questions about Notrium, feel free to private message me them.

Title: Re: List of Free PC Games
Post by: Quanrian on March 10, 2006, 02:30:50 pm
Well I don't know who Borogrove is yet... and I certainly wouldn't put myself in anywhere near the same league as Will Wright. I'm still what you'd consider a budding developer, I've got plenty to learn and it's kind of disheartening at times trying to keep up with all the trends. Things that were popular when I originally wanted to get into game design nearly 10 years ago are not nearly as saleable anymore. Actually it's the main reason, to the chagrin of many why I've stuck with Indy rather than try and go for a big company.

The Indy scene, I feel, has a stronger connection to how things used to be, and is a lot less about making money and more about simply bringing your creation to life. I would not suggest to anyone to take the path I did, as it's not financially rewarding for one and it can altogether lead nowhere. Though I'm still quite happy about being able to make a game more like how I want, and that's something you really shouldn't take for granted if you're into game design.

Now I feel a bit weird about just talking so candidly like this so I'll offer up something my own surfing. This is a fantastic game for anyone who enjoys beat-em ups. It's called Little Fighter 2 (http://lf2.net/), and it's about what you'd expect from a beat-em up and than some. It offers online and offline play with up to 8 players. You can see some truely insane stuff in this game and I highly recommend it. If you enjoy it you might try looking up Little Fighter Online which unfortunately is in, Chinese I believe, only. You can figure out what most of the text means, and a large chunk 'is' in english, but things like story and some menus you wont be able to read, but the game it totally playable. You only get one character however for free and have to buy the others by buying packs of cards (virtual or real, virtual are through yahoo).

I updated it with most of the games at the GDC Independent Games Festival. I realize that there are repeats with the original list, but I will gradually integrate those on the IGF list into the normal list, and wipe away all the Demos.  :)

Savage for dummies:

There are two teams (plus the spectators). Each team has a commander, who can give orders to his NPC workers and his teammates; he can also give buffs to his underlings or promote them to Officers, who get a tiny healing boost, the ability to give orders, and a totem/big red flag on their backs. While the commander plans a base and researches weapons and units for the "action players" (FPS players), they're off doing whatever they want. Unless they're stupid, that means doing anything that helps the team, like helping the workers build, repair, and mine, scouting for enemies, sieging the enemy base, etc.

Watch out for land mines, medkits, Kongors, mortars, ammo packs, Oschores, mana crystals, Frenzy, Fireball, immobilizers, catapults, Tempest, ballistae, Nomads, Savages, Legionnaires, flux guns, Ember, coil rifles, repeaters, Spires, Flame Spires, Healing Spires, Wind Spires, Mudents, Towers, Shield Towers, Shock Towers, Mortar Towers, Surge, Bearloths, Uber Chiprels, Frost Shards, Rupture, Shamans, Behemoths, Redstone mines, Gerkats, Summoners, pulse guns, Predators, launchers, Blaze, crossbows, Lightning, Sacrifice, Storm Shield, Mist Shroud, hunting bows, Stalkers, Sixth Sense, marksman bows, Chaplains, poison, Monkits, Fire Wards, scatterguns, Snare, Gates,  dischargers, Scavengers, disruptors, detonation packs, etc.

You can safely ignore Chaos Bolt, Chiprels, incinerators, and gold mines. And people that pay attention to these.

Now I wish they'd make a football version of this. It'd be some sort of weird blend of Fifa and an FPS, but it would make for an awesome game.

In my infinite wisdom I have found a game as close to the space stage as any I have played.

Noctis (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=2950)<==Link to Underdogs

http://anywherebb.com/noctis.html<==Official Site

Quote from: Underdogs website
Noctis is a wonderful space exploration program that lets you explore a vast, fictional galaxy at will. Think Elite minus the plot and combat, or Microsoft Space Simulator minus technical details, and you'll have a rough idea of what Noctis is about. The official description is actually very good (and even a little poetic) that it's worth quoting in full here: "Noctis: the latin word for "night", and the title of this simulator. Night, after all, is just the word we use to describe the absence of light while the Earth is turned away from the sun, and in space, there is no light but the distant pinpricks of ancient stars. Space is a lonely place, but it harbours some truly spectacular secrets; eerily glowing pulsars, enormous red giants, glittering, beautiful nebulae, and deadly, all-consuming singularities to name but a few. For most people, the thought of going into space and exploring such sights is an impossible dream. But no longer; Noctis allows you to do just that. In technical terms, it is a fully 3D galaxy, which allows you to explore thousands of stars, their planets and moons. From the moment you first play Noctis, you'll be hooked."
And hooked you will be, indeed. The program is surprisingly small: the virtually unlimited galaxy fits in less than 1MB of space-- yet another testament to the fact that good games don't need to be big. The highlights of Noctis are the excellent 3D graphics, as well as the dynamic nature of its galaxy. For example, you can swing past a planet, land on its surface, and watch a tree swaying in the winds amidst heavy rainfall. The physics are reasonably realistic, although the program focuses much more on exploration (and the wonder of discovery) than on spacecraft behavior. One of the best features in Noctis is that the program allows you to name any star and planet you discover. The "official" starmap and galactic guide is maintained by a very active Noctis community, and you can send your own star names and comments to the maintainer for inclusion in the next version of the guide and starmap. This means that the universe in Noctis is continually evolving and expanding. It's a lot of fun just to download new versions of the starmap and guide once in a while just to see the new stars that fellow explorers have named.

With an excellent graphics model, solid gameplay, and an endlessly changing galaxy to explore, Noctis is a rare space exploration program that can evoke a sense of wonder in us all. Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in spaceflight, or just space in general. Two thumbs up, way up!

I second Noctis with a passion. An entire GALAXY, life-sized, with the ability to visit any star, any system, any planet within that system, and even land on those planets at any point and walk around and explore.
Plus plants, crystal formations, ground made out of quartz, purple oceans, and the occasional alien.
Randomly generated, too, so there's new stuff all over the place.
And all in under 2 megabytes.

Direct link: http://anywherebb.com/postline/posts.php?f=15&t=409

The only downside is that the graphics aren't exactly what you'd call cutting edge, but for a no-budget one-man indie game (and for even more than that), this game rocks it hard.

Yes, they made a Cube 2. And I'm using the source for something.

Also, no, you don't, but it does have to reload the level every time you die.

try this nethack type game, really good!
Iter Vehemens ad Necem
http://gamehippo.com/download2/download2_2091.shtml

Iter Vehemens ad Necem (or IVAN, for short) is a graphical rogue-like that is simple enough for the casual gamer to play, but has even more depth than most of the others. Don't let the confusing name fool you, this is a game that rivals that of Nethack in the sheer joy of playing it.

Within the world of IVAN, you play a lowly banana picker. One day, you are on your break when you are called to the castle. The viceroy of this colony tells you that another colony close by may be plotting against him, and you are givin the mission to take a letter to this place. You are not told what this letter says (you can't even read it), why you should do it, or what you are going to get out of it. You are just ordered to do it. Yes, the story is pretty lame, but the gameplay easily makes up for it.

As I said before, IVAN is a rogue-like, and plays like one. Most of the time, you'll be running through dungeons killing monsters that oppose you. However, this is definitely one of the highest quality, and most unique of all rogue-likes I've seen. The game is suprisingly simple to play for a rogue-like, the commands are simplified and easier for the people who don't want to read manuals and study control lists. Even through the simplification, the game retains some complexity in the vast amount of things you can do. When was the last time you prayed to a god in a game, and the god invokes his wrath to sever your arm off? Yes, by far one of the most unique things I've ever seen in a game like this is the body system. All of your body parts can be severed off, and it all drastically effects how your player works. If one of your legs is severed off, your encumbrance is severely reduced, and your movements are slowed. If you lose both legs... well, your only hope is to pray to your most appreciative god in hopes he will give you a couple of iron legs, or else you'll be laying on the floor until you starve or are killed by the unforgiving amount of creatures about (or you could use an amulet of life saving, but those are extremely rare). You also must pay attention to the amount of damage your body has sustained. Eventually, you will start to bleed in areas you have been hit in, which detracts from your health even further. Of course, you've still got all the things you loved from other rogue-likes here, such as polymorph, one of my favorites. The only things I could've hoped for is a character creation system. You always start out with the same stats and items, with no options to tweak him. However, your character starts out as a clean slate, which you build upon throughout the game. Depending on your actions, you can build up certain skills. Carrying enough items to weigh yourself down will increase your leg strength, and taking heavy damage and healing wounds through rest will increase your endurance. This also applies to weaponry, use your weapon in your left hand and you will gain a proficiency with that hand, and fighting with one type of weapon for a long time will let you level up your skills for that weapon as well. This allows you to build your own type of character to play how you want. IVAN's graphics are very good for a rogue-like game. Objects are nicely detailed for their small size and there are lots of nice little graphical treats to be found within the game. When you hit an enemy, or when you're hit, you will see blood splatter on the ground, if you’re hit hard enough you’ll see your character dripping in blood. Once a character is bleeding, you will see a trail of blood following where they went. If an enemy runs after you have critically hurt him, you'll be able to chase him down and slaughter him for that nicely deserved helmet you were admiring. The real downside (if you see it that way) is the extreme difficulty. Iter Vehemens ad Necem even means; Violent Road to Death, which aptly describes the difficulty level.

Overall, IVAN a great game with lots of features to keep you coming back for more, even when you've been killed by that pathetic little kobold around the corner. Most people could probably find something here to love, but the difficulty of the game is so unforgiving at times you might give up on it and move on to other games just because you lost your favorite character you worked so hard on. IVAN is the closest example of a perfect freeware RPG I've ever seen, and easily deserves a 10/10. I've always been a big Nethack fan, but IVAN has surpassed my expectations for any freeware RPG.

Both of them are for HL1.

Mods are Mods so i do not think they count especially not if their mods to a game that is not free.

But if you like mods check out Mod Datebase (http://www.moddb.com).

In my infinite wisdom I have found a game as close to the space stage as any I have played.

Noctis (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=2950)<==Link to Underdogs

http://anywherebb.com/noctis.html<==Official Site

Does anyone else think I should replace Vega Strike with Noctis?

I like it, but the control scheme is hairy. Otherwise I think it is a great game.

Well Windows XP have not official support for MS-DOS but sometimes it works and sometimes it do not. But just get DOS box which is a very good DOS emulator

Title: Re: List of Free PC Games

actually the game i downloaded was Wolf. I tried to download Lion but i couldn't find it on the internet, the one at underdogs wouldn't download.

There are four .exe files in the wolf package: Install.exe, Setup.exe, W.exe, and Wolf.exe

Install and setup seem to work but they aren't much help...When I try to start W.exe or Wolf.exe the screen goes black for a second as if it were starting, but then it gets minimized and I get an error message:

(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i220/bobthetriangle/wolfmsg.png) The error message looks similiar to that, the window is a little different, grey instead of blue, but the text is exactly the same.

If I click ignore and then unminimize WOLF.EXE it does the same thing again.

You are supposed to run it using Dos Box. you basically have to mount c drive, then navigate it like back in the dos days(via commands). There are instructions in dosbox when you turn it on, but it has been a while since then, and I really should look for an alternative game. :-\
Title: Re: List of Free PC Games
Post by: Bobthetriangle on July 14, 2006, 03:47:22 pm
i typed 'mount c:\' pressed enter, then i typed 'c:' then it said i still need to mount...i wish i could just type 'run C:\wolf\wolf.exe' or something like that...

I remember having to use DOS to run a game on an older computer, it was a while ago and i was less than ten years old at the time, i don't remember how i did it.

and on a different subject, i can't download ANYTHING from underdogs...i keep getting a "you have been tricked page" something about stolen links or whatever...

I updated the list! It has been a while since I have but here are the changes:

Titles were highlighted.

Added 8 new games to the main list:
Blood 2:The Chosen (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?gameid=4154)
Torus Trooper (http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/tt_e.html)
FlapFlapFlap (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=4942)
Gene Pool (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=5123)
Glider for Windows (http://homepage.mac.com/calhoun/Glider%20PRO.html)
Sandbox of God (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?gameid=5075)
Nexus War (http://www.nexuswar.com/)
sauerbraten (http://sauerbraten.org)

Added Huggs and Hydro to the "Games by forum members" list, with their CE 2.0;

Added CE2.0 to the Spore experience, replacing Bamzooki, which was moved to the general list.

Added Noctis to the Spore experience, replacing Vega Strike, which was moved to the general list.

Integrated the IGF'06 Games with the general list, removing all demos.

Can someone compile a list of games that are freeform, like those grow games.
Sandbox of God is fairly similar to Grow.

EDIT: I just notice some mistakes. :-[

So it has moved from abandonware to abandonwarez. Download of it is illegal.

So sorry, no download, and we need a new civilization game for that section.

Any suggestions?

Under the Spore Experience Section, Freeciv has replaced Civilization II in the Civilization Phase, which has been listed as illegal to distribute as Abandonware by the ESA. Do not post a link to a download of Civ II.

Alphabetically?

Or by genre, with the contents of each genre sorted alphabetically?

also after you do each genre, you could repeat the titles how they fit into other catagories, such as 3D or 2D, amateur or professional, or higher rated and lower rated. Just some ideas I'm throwing at you. Cool list, I check it out when I need something new to play.

Done.

Please tell me if I made a mistake or if you think a particular game should be in a different category or create a new category. I used each genre in the very widest definition, so their could be some border line cases where they fit into completely different categories.

ok

Decker is an RPG, Sand toys are sims, Blockland is a sandbox, Wulfram, Tremulous, and Savage are action games with strategy elements (Savage is a "real-time strategy shooter"), Narbacular Drop and Lemming Ball Z are puzzles, and N fits in Puzzles just as well as it does in Action (not very).

Also, Survival Crisis Z and Zombies and Pterodactyls 2005 from www.skasoftware.com are good.

edit: Maybe tack Sandbox, Platformer, and Sports on to the end.

Found a new one, and it's very fun!

Protect the VIP in Black Shades: http://wolfire.com/blackshades.html

Aim by looking down the sights of your gun, tackle people, pistol whip them, just make sure they don't get the VIP or you have to restart the level.

If it's graphics you want, look elsewhere. If you want fun, get this!

Also, there's zombies!

EDIT: The Windows install doesn't come with a readme file, so I found this in a thread on their forum and copy/pasted it to a .txt file:

Yesterday, I installed it on a whim.
Man, this thing is hilarious. I got a few of my friends lined up to join in. They think the game is pretty different and sure worth a shot.

Gotta love the chaos brought on by a full 32 vs 32 game.  ;D
I understand the sequel is going to have a clan and ranking system; should be easier to keep track of others and meet up.

I was really lucky in Survival Crisis Z when my city was generated.
SPOILERISH In one of those buildings that has halls connecting four seperate rooms, the halls were occupied, as well as all four rooms. The halls and three of the rooms were neutral, and I could take them over pretty easily. The last room is a SWAT 15 difficulty room. http://www.technosphere.game-host.org/ (http://www.technosphere.game-host.org/)

Technosphere is a simplistic form of Goo Grid, you pick certain parts to create a creature. The creature is entered into the world, if it survives it mates and eventually dies off. You can't see your 3D creature actually in game and there is no difference between what parts you choose (no difference that is mentioned anyway). It's sorta a fun little game to keep you entertained over long periods of time. This isn't sort of game to check every 30 minutes, you just log in once a day or so to see how your creature(s) are doing.

All browser based MMO's

http://injustice.net.nz - easily the best out of the bunch. Even though it's a mafia game you can have a legit job like doctor, lawyer police officer, mortician firefighter.. you get the idea. You can even be a supreme court judge or mayor. The only catch is if you die you have to make a new character which is why you have to be careful about what you do until you can afford the security of an apartment and a dog.  The main way to make money (earns) is on a three minute timer so it's easy to get caught up just making money

http://www.human-age.com - An interesting game where you start out as early man. finishing certain objectives lets you unlock new skills (like making fire!). Once you finish a series of quests you move onto the next stage (Celts) and so on all the way to the 21st century. Unlike Injustice this game is a opposite. It's extremely slow. you spend a few minutes saying you want to spend your day doing certain things. After that you wait a full 24 hours to get money and anything you've killed. It's slow but it's kind of fun.

http://ceti.astroempires.com/home.aspx - a game where you are dropped into a huge galaxy. You start off with a small moon you build up infrastructure and research until you can leave the planet and colonize more, eventually you can control an empire if your smart about it.

Hammerfall. Its only at version 0.2, so its got a lot of rough edges (particularly english translation). You get an hour of play then the profile is halted, so just open a new one. Remember, that once you get to the 'slave fighting' chapter, the mission will halt during the pre-game talking. Switch to russian through this chapter to continue.

Controls are undocumented, but simple enough for me to have worked em out. Mouse moves your machine (speed limit depends on weapon weight and number of shields/items). Mouse wheel turns the selector wheel, and right click discards whatever is highlighted. Left clicking an item, and then left clicking another, will attempt to combine them. Weapons and shields can be combined, to be stuck to each other end-to-end (think of darth mauls dual lightsaber). Jewels can be added to weapons to add effects. Rubies restore your health the more you hit without being damaged (and the harder/faster you strike, the more you get). Amber/topaz gradually grows brighter over time, then sets your weapon on fire for fire-strike (but can set your own flags on fire). Jade operates when you highlight it and hold the left mouse button, making it pass through physical objects until you let go (get around shields and akward terrain). You operate ranged weapons the same as the Jade.

You cant hold more than two weapons at a time, not sure on the shield limit, and sometimes only one weapon if its a real heavy/unique one. Only ever throw your weapon away willingly if you know you'll be able to retrieve it afterwards (just bump into it gently), because if you lose it, all you have left is ramming. A current bug seems to be the inability to pick up weapons whilst the game goes in slow motion (when you get a shattering/perfect strike).

With all this done and in mind, go have fun, and try not to be too impatient for the full version :

No. It's a "peaceful" game. I didn't play it that long myself. Nothing is going to attack you, you can't get injured in any way, you basically explore, dance, cast magic spells that change your pelt/mask color, and roar in each other's faces.

A really fun site.  They have puzzle games, violent games (Heavy Weapon), even educational games (Typer Shark).  Oh, and my favorite, Bookworm Adventures.  Not only is it my favorite game, but it is the only game my mom has ever liked (despite having a bit of blood in it).  Oh, if you get Bookworm Adventures, I suggest playing the Buy version.  The free version just plain isn't as fun.  No matter what kind of game you like, you'll find it at Popcap.

I found Ad-Astra (http://a-astra.com/index.htm), which I added to the list a while ago but didnt comment upon. Its a space "sim" whose star system is based on the placement and composition of real known stars (its not a random galaxy). So there are a couple thousand stars to explore, each with a completely random star system (the planets are obviously added, and based on nothing). It includes a limited power spacecraft editor and creature creator. the game play itself is standard space trade/fighting. You can fly through planets atmospheres and even land, you could even hunt the randomly generated wildlife. Its story line is vague, and there are some unrealistic aspects to it. For instance, since it was developed by a British programmer, the country that represents Earth in space (including station, planet, and city names) is Great Britain. Preposterous.  ;)

Wait! Thats a catastrophe and crime against humanity! Doukutsu Monogatari must be represented or I'll... I'll... post again about needing to put Cave Story on the list.

Anyways, I was hoping someone could help me find a freeware game someone had mentioned on the forums once about a year ago. It was a sci-fi action/adventure game about an abused prisoner/test subject trying to escape a space station in a future. The game also had a decent surprise twist ending. I was hoping to show it to my friend but I can't even remember what it was called.

Nice list there. What about Eduke?

Technically there is no such thing  as abandon ware, someone always owns the rights they just arent publicly known (not that i have a problem with it, i believe games that old should all be free, unless there collectors items)

You are supposed to think of something, or else there is no point.

Why did the mods move this here?  I'm starting to get really, really tired of Mods moving topics into other topics where they will not be discussed as much as in their own topic, and, furthermore, does not in fact apply to them.  This is not anymore a PC game then that "evil detector" currently in Everything Else.  (Don't worry, Mods, I'm not mad at you personally, just at your actions.)

allot of them can turn and dont you see all those plasma guns on the back? and besides...mine can teleport :D

and i can deploy 12 gunning platforms that can flank you...along with 4 defence platform that slow down your bullets...

and i have shielding that can shield any side of my ship...and flak guns that shoot at incoming fire

and this is just my small ship...i know this is extremely unbalanced but its just fun to make these things

I just finished playing Jason Rohrer's "Passage" game a few times. (Hooray for Mac OS X native game ports!) Link: http://hcsoftware.sourceforge.net/passage/ (http://hcsoftware.sourceforge.net/passage/)

It has been touted as an "artsy" game. I think that's a valid assessment, in the sense that what you take from the game in terms of enjoyability and emotion is proportional to the time and emotion you invest in the game. I suppose you can think of it as a "deep" game, but only as deep as you imagine it to be. I found it shallow, so I guess I'm not sufficiently cultured.

I have actually been making ships to compete in the 100 point buy rule set tournaments they're running. Just check out my 100 point ship, the Manyara (http://www.wyrdysm.com/battleshipsforever/shipdatabase/uploads/Manyara_Mk._II.shp).

Which was made using these rules:

Code: [Select]
Base rules

First step:
-Choose a ship class.
Battleship: Slow, but large and strong
Cruiser: The middle-ground between frigate and battleship
Frigate: Small and fragile, but agile

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your ship starts off with these stats
Base Stats-|--Battleship---|----Cruiser----|----Frigate----|
Core HP    |----- 500 -----|----- 400 -----|----- 300 -----| (Appears as Base HP)
Section HP |----- 200 -----|----- 150 -----|----- 100 -----| (Set every section to this HP)
Max Speed  |------ 0 ------|------ 0 ------|------ 0 ------|
Accelerate |------ 0 ------|------ 0 ------|------ 0 ------|
Turning    |------ 0 ------|------ 0 ------|------ 0 ------|

For every point you spend, add this much to those stats
Add Stats--|--Battleship---|----Cruiser----|----Frigate----|
Core HP Add|----- 50 ------|----- 25 ------|----- 10 ------|
Sec. HP Add|----- 250 -----|----- 200 -----|----- 150 -----| (On one section, not all of them)
Max Speed  |----- 0.10 ----|----- 0.15 ----|----- 0.20 ----|
Accelerate |----- 0.01 ----|----- 0.02 ----|----- 0.05 ----|
Turning    |----- 0.08 ----|----- 0.14 ----|----- 0.20 ----|

How much adding a section costs (Read / as for)
Sections--|--Battleship---|----Cruiser----|----Frigate----|
Cost------|-- 1 point/2 --|-- 1 point/1 --|-- 2 points/1 -|

-May be covered by other sections.
-Weapons or modules cannot be connected off the core.
-Cannot be small, civilian, or defense platform core.

Shields:
-Aegis shields are banned
-Deflector shields are allowed, but restricted to 1 Deflector Shield per 3 sections

Sections:
-Sections can be scaled three times in each direction, either larger or smaller.
-The only exception to the above rule is Section 26, which may only be made smaller.
-Parenting between sections must be logical.
-Sections may overlap other sections within reason. No more than 25% can be covered by another section.

Weapons and Modules:
-Limited to 3 per section
-Weapons and modules must rest, without overlapping, on its parent section. (This does not mean all the pixels of the weapon\module have to be on the parent section, just that where it sits should be on its parent section)
-Weapons and modules may touch, and may cover the section, but again, may not overlap.
-The arc of the weapon can be set from 0 to 135 degrees.

Title: Duels Web-Game
Post by: JakeCourtney on January 27, 2008, 03:38:18 pm
Hey guys,

Anyone here played Duels?  It's a pretty sweet free web based game that you can pretty much play anywhere.  I play it at work all the time.  It's a player-vs-player asynchronous game.  It's almost like a Collectible Card game in the fact that you collect items that range in rarity.

You can check it out by clicking http://www.duels.com/users/register/jakecourtney (http://www.duels.com/users/register/jakecourtney).

By clicking that link you use my as a referrer and we both get rewarded with extra in-game gold.

They are constantly adding new features and enhancements.  The game shares a lot of theme with World of Warcraft... The items and the graphics just feel World of Warcraft like.

Anyway, if you have any questions just let me know.

Yeah.  I work at a Computer Help Desk, so basically I get paid to play games.  Oh, and by clicking the link nether of us are automatically rewarded anything.  There is an e-mail validation that also must be done.  It's more a game you can play for 10 minutes out of the day.  I also play www.the-reincarnation.com

Use the clone tool, then pour whatever you want on it, and the clone will constantly produce whatever touches it first, until it reaches the particle limit.
Title: Re: List of Free PC Games
Post by: SBD on January 31, 2008, 10:15:11 pm
Cheers Mr Wizard. The particle limit is really annoying.

Also, you can create a tank full of high-pressure gas by building a container out of Bloc, filling it with Nitro and then igniting the Nitro. Also, Nitro can be ignited by holding down the Air tool when in a container; I assume its through the pressure and subsequent heat.

the controls are terrible and there are like 2 standart moves and 3 (way too easy to use) super moves per class

there are 4 classes or something and there ALL girls and when you start the game you have no items so they run around in underwear

while playing you have to beat the **** out of puddings and mushroom like any other japanese mmo and its just boring since they hardly do anything back

i cant really say much more since i only played for like...5 minutes
Title: Re: List of Free PC Games

The game has just come out of closed-beta so their isn't much in it at the moment.  The PVP is intense and highspeed action and of course low level has you fighting monsters that dont fight back around level 10 things heat up big time.

There are 6 characters (so far in the sea version)
Lass= male rogue
Ryan= male druid
Ronan= male spell knight
Elesis= female fighter
Lire= female ranger
Arme= female mage

and all classes have other jobs they become at a certain level

so maybe it aint for you celdur but it's an awesome game

The Manipulator (http://www.virtanen.urli.net/) - take control of enemies to get to your goal
Seven Minutes (http://www.virtanen.urli.net/) - seven minutes to live, what will you do
Streets of Rage Remake (http://www.bombergames.net/sorr_project/) - faithful to the originals

I posted these in another thread but i figured they might get seen more here.

Shin megami tensai imagine: Free with market place but everything in the market place can be bought off of other players with in game cash. Its an MMO with a hybrid real time combat system. You capture and combine monsters via jade cocoon style.

http://megaten.aeriagames.com/

Combat arms, A first person shooter and the most polished free game i have ever seen anything can be bought with in game money so every ones on equal grounds and anything that can be bought in the real market place is aesthetic versions of other in game items or stuff like the ability to kick when hosting a game.
http://combatarms.nexon.net/Intro.aspx

War rock, As close to battlefield as you can get with tanks plane and helicopters and classes such as medic etc. Not as polished as combat arms and suffers from market place only items. But its the best free battlefield type game.
http://warrock.gamersfirst.com/index.php

S4 league. An over top arena third person shooter with swords cannons and guns and back flips and wall runs. Anything bought on the marketplace is only another aesthetic version of a normal in game weapon.

You should add a roguelike section. Here's some stuff:

Dwarf Fortress (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/)
Why isn't this here yet?!

Nethack (http://www.nethack.org/)
The classy roguelike.

Angband (http://www.thangorodrim.net/)
A Lord of the Rings themed Roguelike

Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup (http://crawl-ref.sourceforge.net/)
Just a good roguelike! The one I'm currently obsessed with now. Tons of play styles with many a combination of races, classes, and gods.

Iter Vehemens ad Necem is a roguelike in play style, but I don't think it completely qualifies. Plus it's already here.

Daggerfall is terrible.

I spent like half an hour figuring how to get it working.. then I set up my character and it looked all neat and stuff.. So I go to the second room with the giant rat and I can hear it but cant see it. After I figure out its on the floor and my view is above it, I try hitting it with my weapon, but i keep missing and so the giant rat kills me within 2 minutes of starting the game Im dead and I need to create a whole new character.
So I do, and this time i mess around with the keyboard and figure out how to crouch which is handy; but for some reason ive got fists out and whatever I try to do, my weapon wont come into hand. The tutorial is useless. The giant rat killed me again after I hit it 100 times with my fists.

Lets hope Morrowind and Oblivion are better when I end up getting them.

Pff..! Kids these days! I my self remapped the home control scheme. But that is what i normally do in any game.

The game is not that hard. You just need to learn the basics. You probably wish to focus on melee first as you can burn up mana to fast with spells. Being able to adsorb spells is a great alternative however. Get a spell that do area damage and you can adsorb back the mana you used even. A bit cheap but it works.

Title: Re: List of Free PC Games
Post by: Kidsoldier on October 08, 2009, 04:33:42 pm
Only games that are plain bad.
You want to verse me in any online game made in the last 10 years? Bring it.
When Daggerfall was released, I was 4 years old, (Yes, making me 15 and slightly less toolish and dimwitted then some 15 year olds that plague the net) and at that age all I did on the computer was play a neat game called Gizmos and Gadgets or one of the games in the Putt Putt series. (Hardcore gamer, I know.)
But the Atari was always fun, I could get days and days out of games that had an entertainment value that only lasted an hour.
If your going to be this way. Then guess what? I might just pick up Daggerfall again and make sure I at least kill that giant rat for my own dignities sake.
Amen to that.
Title: Re: List of Free PC Games
Post by: Yokto on October 08, 2009, 05:00:54 pm
But your simply wrong. Daggerfall is a great game. Not with todays standard. But back then. I mean i do not see how you can have issues with the controls when there pretty much the same as a modern game (if you set them up that way). But hay... Maybe you have to read the manual. I did not have to. I learned the game though playing it.
Title: Re: List of Free PC Games

Daggerfall was a great game.
Just like I think The Dig is a great game =P Which I only ended up playing through last year.
I didnt make much of an effort though.. thats why im starting again. The tutorial is what didnt help me at all

EDIT: I killed it! Hurrah! But only have half health left... Hmm lets see whats next.
Omfg.. Are you kidding me? Now the bat kills me.. I swipped at him like 10 times and only hit twice.. What kind of game kills the player in the tutorial?

Hurray! I killed the giant bat! Now lets open this nice looking door. Wtf. Some flying green goblin casts a spell on me and I die.

No! Okay. its just not worth the struggle. I avoid the Imp and some thief thats chasing me that will kill me if i try to fight him.. then a room with two rats.. = dead me. Bah. I even tried making a strong str warrior

Spelunky (http://www.spelunkyworld.com/) will feel strangely familiar to people who stuck with La Mulana for a while, and to people who brave the many roguelikes. Great platform game with a certain learning curve to it. I'm sure you'll do fine if you're used to the notion of "everything can kill me, oh god why?"

Elona (http://homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/index_e.html) is a roguelike with a mandatory tileset. Isgood! Another one with a learning curve to it, but one that yields much joy, if you don't mind being addicted to this kind of stuff. Don't forget to pick up the mp3 pack, too.
