Title: Length of Podcasts Question
Post by: Gaming Steve on March 30, 2005, 01:32:35 pm
So I have been getting a lot of feedback on the last podcast's length. Some people like the longer podcasts, some people would perfer a short one (around 40-50 minutes or so). However, since the show is just once a week right now I am curious to hear what you think of the length? Would you like a shorter show or a longer one? Since I cover many topics in a single show it might be difficult to make all shows shorter, but I can do my best. Let me know what you think!

I prefer the longer shows. But thats cause I listen to it at work, so the longer the show, the more time I can kill by listening to it  ;D

edit: I would be happy to listen to a show that is several hours long btw

60 minutes is fine i think.  You don't have to listen to it at once - and if you just want to relax and kill time, and listen to Steve for a good hour or so, it's nice.  So yeah, i would go for 60 minutes.

Well it jsut depends

I'd like a long one with lots of content
But i don't want a 90 minute one that 70 of them u are reviewing a puff the magic dragon game  :D ;).
(I liked the WoW review but it was lonnnngggg)

I also like the short ones cause u can listen to them over and over a few times then the long ones.

The huge problem I can see (which u can't prevent) is the file size and sence I'm on dial up (2 more years till I get to move out) it takes 5-7 hours to download one.

I think about 60-90 minutes would be good. Not too long, but not too short either.

An hour is good, but the longer ones are just an extra treat. ;)

If a pod cast seems like it'd be really long, couldn't you break it down and do 2 pod casts in the week? If not, then you could always spread the info across a couple podcasts... but it's always better to get news that's as current as possible. ;D

I just remember that when you were covering the GDC with a podcast each day, the first 2 days were over 30 minutes and still covered a lot of content. I don't know how much shorter they can be.

I like the length and the content therein.  I can certainly see how it might be a problem for others but for this cabajero, it's just fine.  -leeman

As long as you have something interesting to say about the week's events, by all means keep going.  There's plenty of dead time during a week(commute, etc) to listen.

I think so far the length has been right on, never do I ponder about the time when listening to the weekly podcast. Like Bselig said, as long as you have something to say, keep it going  :D

I like the podcasts, but I have dial-up as well.  Would it be possible for you to divide them up according to topic, or is that too much? :P

Yeah, I knew that would be an issue. It's actually really hard/time-consuming to divide them up. I might change the bit-rate to make them a bit smaller, but it can decrease the sound quality. I'll do what I can!

Any length is fine by me - as long as the subject IS true to the podcast.  Lengthy off-topic RAMBLING is what turns me off of some podcasts...

If its good content length is not important (so far great content)

I think the length of the show should be in proportion too how much stuff you want to say. If nothing happened this week dont go longer than you have too. But if you have to take up more time in order to justifiy a topic by all means go right ahead. The length is not that big an issue too me.  ::)

As I have broadband, its not that big an issue to jump ahead when you reach a topic I have no interest in.  Nothing forces people to listen to the entire thing, at least that I know of...

For Dial-up users (I guess), maybe keep the length proportional to content, like the others above have mentioned.

I personally prefer the longer Podcasts. It'd be a loss if you couldn't touch as many subjects as you'd like to because of a time constraint. So far, I really appreciate the insight can you give us in the industry. Another valid reason for me: The longer the Podcast, the more I have to listen at work :D

Perhaps you could offer a lower quality or split-up version of the casts. The advantage of the latter is that dial-up users can start listening to the first part while the next part is being downloaded in the meantime.

They're a pretty good length as is, but any longer ones are perfectly welcome. As long as it's got the content.

Exactly.  As long as the content is still good, I'll listen.

My vote would be under 80 minutes if possible, but that is because I burn them to CD and listen to them in the car.

You get wierd looks when you've got PacMan blasting out of a car windows at 80 mph. :)

While a longer podcast is certanly worthwhile, I would opt for a weekly schedule and shorter duration to ensure that the weekly schedule is achieved.

The news becomes far to dated for the gaming aficionado, if podcasts extend to a lesser release frequency.
