The next Inazuma Eleven game is likely going to suck. But this... this should be a suitable replacement.

Pat you're the only person I've ever met who's into these anime soccer games. What is the draw exactly?

In my brain it's just a spin on the classic JRPG. At its core, most of these games use a straightforward leveling and skill mechanic like many of my favorite old JRPGs use. They are sort of a refuge for the older style of gameplay while the actual JRPG genre has generally gone off in other directions. Plus you get to play soccer! Captain Tsubasa is definitely a bit different than Inazuma Eleven though. The Inazuma Eleven games are straight-up DBZ with Jr. High soccer teams. The team building is a lot like what you would find in Pokemon and the skill building is like what you would have in Dragon Quest and early Final Fantasy games. Inazuma Eleven 2 even had two versions with different players to find in each one, plus a trade mechanic so you could catch them all.

Now I will say that I liked the DS versions the most because the touch screen controls added a very fun layer to the matches. But overall I like the sport of soccer and the FIFA games are too boring for my tastes. And I mean...

Watch this German dude wreck one of the best teams in the game with his insanely over-leveled team. He's throwing level five techniques at the base-level Zeus team. LOL

Okay this looks completely bonkers, I see the appeal. I do like old style JRPGs, especially DQ - you play Dragon Quest 11 yet?

Yeah, Dragon Quest XI is phenomenal. I thoroughly enjoyed playing it.

I really really want to but I'm making myself finish VIII first so I fully appreciate XI being VIII-2

Dragon Quest VIII is really good. But I hope you'll try Dragon Quest VII. It's really REALLY good. And over a hundred hours long at the least.

Alright so I've got a couple hours in and this game is really fun but very complicated. Lots of button combinations to get a handle on but it also seems to have a lot of depth if you're willing to learn the controls. So far I've been enjoying it and the story mode is fleshed out well. There's also a ton of customization and a lot of neat challenges to tackle.

Currently I'd score it at about 17/10.

Phew the controls are about as logical as Xenoverse, which makes sense considering the developer. But I'm starting to get it and it's a lot of fun.

Challenge mode activate! This game is hard. Doing good though. Working my way toward the National Championship!
