Ovi isn't the only one of us that loves cartography. I am highly offended.

I'm going to go to /r/mapporn and pout.

Do we...

Do we do maps, here?

I once almost got through making a quarter of a map. Was thinking of running a forum adventure over on the 4chan quest board or here or something. Animalia, it would've been called, on account of, you know, all the races being animals. I think last I thought of it I was thinking of making the ? empire Ravens & Crows or something.

Alas, then I lost momentum!

Such are the words of all aborted works.

You should be able to right-click and view the second image to get a much larger version. Also, I've still got all the information and gridwork (http://i.imgur.com/5wv4Hwr.png) (including an image of each square blown-up for easy editing) and whatnot for that map.

Looks like this was the last map from the other Dawn of Worlds game we did:

Those games were a lot of fun, we should try one again sometime.  See if we can figure out how not to drop the ball this time.

I don't think I ever played Dawn of Worlds since none of the things look familiar. Or all my stuff was undone because I'm a useless ****.

But I did play the Planetary Construction Project. I seem to remember those generally coming to a conclusion.

You did play Dawn of Worlds, you had some necromancer bugs in the Kendara one, on that grey peninsula on the left side of the continent.

Holy smokes! That map looks incredible.

For maps that look professional, what are the general parameters that must be followed? Is there a style sheet or some sort of guideline?

Title: Re: Cartographers Guild

I'm sure there is a history there that we as the map viewers aren't seeing. From my viewing of the map in detail, it seems like that little section of the to the right is the original nation and all the land on the large section is colonial land. It looks like it was originally colonies from several different nations but has since come under the control of the little nation on the right. But because we only get a map with no explanation, all this is just a guess by me. :P
Title: Re: Cartographers Guild
Post by: PatMan33 on November 27, 2016, 10:18:31 am
Oh we could set up our game like that.

Maybe we spend a phase building an established word. And then we spend a phase colonizing the new world. It would allow us to have some anchor points for our lore and movements, but also a whole new land to expand upon within a basic structure.

Well as it's the Empire of Torentine, which is the capitol of the eastern bit, you're probably right.

Plus the native enclave states are clearly emulations of mesoamerican cultures, and the southern state is Spanish while the northern ones are more anglicized.

Darker bits are irrelevant clay. Krais (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krais_of_Russia) in Russia, territories in Canada and Australia.

Also that is the best basemap I've ever seen. Reminds me of the alternate history forum I'd go on with a map board containing hundreds of incrementally more detailed subdivision maps using the same projection.
Title: Re: Cartographers Guild
Post by: Oviraptor on April 30, 2017, 03:08:11 pm
Actually, that's where I got it. But it's the first time I've seen it with the EEZs included.

These are also from the same place, but no nifty EEZs: http://imgur.com/a/nh2Wn (http://imgur.com/a/nh2Wn)

Edit: The above series of map is one they call "Q-BAM." And I happened upon a thread where they are trying to make a version at 9x the resolution: https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/the-m-bam-main-thread.376181/ (https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/the-m-bam-main-thread.376181/)

Oh wow, I really don't!  Best I can tell, the different shades in Alaska, Russia, Australia and Greenland are for particularly empty areas.

The section on Alien Space Bats was particularly helpful.

Really, it's best to use a combo of Google Earth and Wikipedia instead of a legend. Too many things going on when you make a map of the whole world.

Is it me or is it very common for nations to be coloured the same way on maps? I mean England tend to be red and French is Blue and Japan is often yellow. Or am I just imagining things?
Title: Re: Cartographers Guild
Post by: Oviraptor on May 01, 2017, 09:18:27 am
No, it's pretty common. People often try to use colors most associated with nations they are meant for. But since a lot of nation are associated with the same (or very similar) colors, it's usually the "important" ones that get the colors. I mean, how many times have you seen the USSR represented as red?
Title: Re: Cartographers Guild
Post by: PatMan33 on May 01, 2017, 09:24:32 am
Maybe they also stick with the pattern that they've already figured out works without having two nations next to each other with the same color?

I imagine it turns into a bit of a puzzle in some regions when you're only working with seven or eight colors.

Man, these Alternate History peeps really like to make their legends complicated: http://i.imgur.com/HiDCOI5.png (http://i.imgur.com/HiDCOI5.png)

I mean, at that many colors, it's basically useless.

Also, found Alternate History's version of our PCP: https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/collaborative-project-lets-build-a-planet-all-welcome.393238/ (https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/collaborative-project-lets-build-a-planet-all-welcome.393238/)

It was significantly less organized and thus lived a short, incandescent life.
